Background: Previous studies have reported errors in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) under the presence of distracting objects in dementia and brain injury patients. However, little is known about which distractor-target objects relation might be more harmful for performance. Method: We compared the ADL execution in frontal brain injured patients and control participants under two conditions: One in which target objects were mixed with distractor objects that constituted an alternative semantically related but non-required task (contextual condition) and another in which target objects were mixed with related but isolated distractors that did not constituted a coherent task (non-contextual condition). We separately analyzed ADL commission errors (repetitions, substitutions, objects manipulations, failures in sequence, extra actions) and omissions. In addition, the participants were evaluated with a neuropsychological protocol including a very specific executive functions task (Selective attention, Stimulus-Stimulus and Stimulus-Response conflict). Results: We found that frontal patients produced more commission errors compared to control participants, but only under the contextual condition. No between groups significant differences were found in omissions in both conditions or commission errors in non-contextual conditions. Scores in the Stimulus-Response conflict was significantly correlated with commission errors in the contextual condition. Conclusion: The presence of different non-target objects in ADL performance could require different cognitive process. Contextual ADL conditions required a higher level of executive functions, especially at the level of response (Stimulus-Response conflict). Application to Practice: Occupational therapists should control the presence of objects related to the target task according to the intervention objectives with the patients.

We use an augmented version of the UK Innovation Surveys 4–7 to explore firm-level and local area openness externalities on firms’ innovation performance. We find strong evidence of the value of external knowledge acquisition both through interactive collaboration and non-interactive contacts such as demonstration effects, copying or reverse engineering. Levels of knowledge search activity remain well below the private optimum, however, due perhaps to informational market failures. We also find strong positive externalities of openness resulting from the intensity of local interactive knowledge search—a knowledge diffusion effect. However, there are strong negative externalities resulting from the intensity of local non-interactive knowledge search—a competition effect. Our results provide support for local initiatives to support innovation partnering and counter illegal copying or counterfeiting. We find no significant relationship between either local labour quality or employment composition and innovative outputs.

The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the influence of the physical fitness of a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) provider on the performance of and physiologic response to CPR. To this end, comparisons were made of sedentary and physically active subjects in terms of CPR performance and physiologic variables. Two study groups were established: group P (n = 14), composed of sedentary, professional CPR rescuers (mean [± SD]; age, 34 ± 6 years; V̇O2max, 32.5 ± 5.5 mL/kg/min), and group Ex (n = 14), composed of physically active, nonexperienced subjects (age, 34 ± 6 years; V̇O2max, 44.5 ± 8.5 mL/kg/min). Each subject was required to perform an 18-min CPR session, which involved manual external cardiac compressions (ECCs) on an electronic teaching mannequin following accepted standard CPR guidelines. Subjects' gas exchange parameters and heart rates (HRs) were monitored throughout the trial. Variables indicating the adequacy of the ECCs (ECC depth and the percentage of incorrect compressions and hand placements) also were determined. Overall CPR performance was similar in both groups. The indicators of ECC adequacy fell within accepted limits (ie, an ECC depth between 38 and 51 mm). However, fatigue prevented four subjects from group P from completing the trial. In contrast, the physiologic responses to CPR differed between groups. The indicators of the intensity of effort during the trial, such as HR or percentage of maximum oxygen uptake (V̇O2max) were higher in group P subjects than group Ex subjects, respectively (HRs at the end of the trial, 139 ± 22 vs 115 ± 17 beats/min, p < 0.01; percentage of V̇O2max after 12 min of CPR, 46.7 ± 9.7% vs 37.2 ± 10.4%, p < 0,05). These results suggest that a certain level of physical fitness may be beneficial to CPR providers to ensure the adequacy of chest compressions performed during relatively long periods of cardiac arrest.

Modern scientific discoveries are driven by an unsatisfiable demand for computational resources. High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems are an aggregation of computing power to deliver considerably higher performance than one typical desktop computer can provide, to solve large problems in science, engineering, or business. An HPC room in the datacenter is a complex controlled environment that hosts thousands of computing nodes that consume electrical power in the range of megawatts, which gets completely transformed into heat. Although a datacenter contains sophisticated cooling systems, our studies indicate quantitative evidence of thermal bottlenecks in real-life production workload, showing the presence of significant spatial and temporal thermal and power heterogeneity. Therefore minor thermal issues/anomalies can potentially start a chain of events that leads to an unbalance between the amount of heat generated by the computing nodes and the heat removed by the cooling system originating thermal hazards. Although thermal anomalies are rare events, anomaly detection/prediction in time is vital to avoid IT and facility equipment damage and outage of the datacenter, with severe societal and business losses. For this reason, automated approaches to detect thermal anomalies in datacenters have considerable potential. This thesis analyzed and characterized the power and thermal characteristics of a Tier0 datacenter (CINECA) during production and under abnormal thermal conditions. Then, a Deep Learning (DL)-powered thermal hazard prediction framework is proposed. The proposed models are validated against real thermal hazard events reported for the studied HPC cluster while in production. This thesis is the first empirical study of thermal anomaly detection and prediction techniques of a real large-scale HPC system to the best of my knowledge. For this thesis, I used a large-scale dataset, monitoring data of tens of thousands of sensors for around 24 months with a data collection rate of around 20 seconds.

Terminal heart disease affects not only the patient, but also members of the patient's family, and especially the spouse. The aim of this prospective study of 26 couples was to collect information about the impact of heart transplantation on the partner relationship. Data were collected from patients and spouses when the patients were placed on the waiting list for transplantation, 1 year postoperatively, and 5 years postoperatively. The Family Assessment Measure (FAM III), a self-report instrument that provides quantitative indices of family functioning on seven interacting dimensions, was used. In the course of the transplant process, both patients and spouses reported a significant deterioration in the partner relationship in general. While patients perceived only one clear-cut point of conflict communication about emotions - as crucial, the spouses reported a significant worsening in role performance, communication, emotional involvement, and values and norms. These changes were discernible 1 year after transplantation and persisted for at least 5 years. We conclude that heart transplantation has a significant negative impact on the partner relationship 1-5 years after transplantation. Consequently, more attention should be paid to all aspects of the partner relationship in a holistic approach to the treatment of heart transplant recipients and their partners.

This study examined the mediating influence of trust in organization (TIO) and organization-based self-esteem (OBSE) on the relationship between perceived organization support (POS) and its work outcomes. Data were obtained from employee–supervisor dyads from multiple organizations located in a major city in southern China. Structural equation modeling results revealed that: (a) POS related to TIO and OBSE and (b) TIO and OBSE fully mediated the relationship between POS and the work outcomes of organizational commitment and in-role performance, but partially mediated the POS–organizational citizenship behavior relationship.

Abstract Purpose: Several well-known managerial accounting performance measurement models rely on causal assumptions. Whilst users of the models express satisfaction and link them with improved organizational performance, academic research, of the realworld applications, shows few reliable statistical associations. This paper provides a discussion on the"problematic" of causality in a performance measurement setting. Design/methodology/approach: This is a conceptual study based on an analysis and synthesis of the literature from managerial accounting, organizational theory, strategic management and social scientific causal modelling. Findings: The analysis indicates that dynamic, complex and uncertain environments may challenge any reliance upon valid causal models. Due to cognitive limitations and judgmental biases, managers may fail to trace correct cause-and-effect understanding of the value creation in their organizations. However, even lacking this validity, causal models can support strategic learning and perform as organizational guides if they are able to mobilize managerial action. Research limitations/implications: Future research should highlight the characteristics necessary for elaboration of convincing and appealing causal models and the social process of their construction. Practical implications: Managers of organizations using causal models should be clear on the purposes of their particular models and their limitations. In particular, difficulties are observed in specifying detailed cause and effect relations and their potential for communicating and directing attention. They should therefore construct their models to suit the particular purpose envisaged. Originality/value: This paper provides an interdisciplinary and holistic view on the issue of causality in managerial accounting models.

Quality, production and technological innovation management rank among the most important matters of concern to modern manufacturing organisations. They can provide companies with the decisive means of gaining a competitive advantage, especially within industries where there is an increasing similarity in product design and manufacturing processes. The papers in this special issue of International Journal of Technology Management have all been selected as examples of how aspects of quality, production and technological innovation can help to improve competitive performance. Most are based on presentations made at the UK Operations Management Association's Sixth International Conference held at Aston University at which the theme was 'Getting Ahead Through Technology and People'. At the conference itself over 80 papers were presented by authors from 15 countries around the world. Among the many topics addressed within the conference theme, technological innovation, quality and production management emerged as attracting the greatest concern and interest of delegates, particularly those from industry. For any new initiative to be implemented successfully, it should be led from the top of the organization. Achieving the desired level of commitment from top management can, however, be a difficulty. In the first paper of this issue, Mackness investigates this question by explaining how systems thinking can help. In the systems approach, properties such as 'emergence', 'hierarchy', 'commnication' and 'control' are used to assist top managers in preparing for change. Mackness's paper is then complemented by Iijima and Hasegawa's contribution in which they investigate the development of Quality Information Management (QIM) in Japan. They present the idea of a Design Review and demonstrate how it can be used to trace and reduce quality-related losses. The next paper on the subject of quality is by Whittle and colleagues. It relates to total quality and the process of culture change within organisations. Using the findings of investigations carried out in a number of case study companies, they describe four generic models which have been identified as characterising methods of implementing total quality within existing organisation cultures. Boaden and Dale's paper also relates to the management of quality, but looks specifically at the construction industry where it has been found there is still some confusion over the role of Quality Assurance (QA) and Total Quality Management (TQM). They describe the results of a questionnaire survey of forty companies in the industry and compare them to similar work carried out in other industries. Szakonyi's contribution then completes this group of papers which all relate specifically to the question of quality. His concern is with the two ways in which R&D or engineering managers can work on improving quality. The first is by improving it in the laboratory, while the second is by working with other functions to improve quality in the company. The next group of papers in this issue all address aspects of production management. Umeda's paper proposes a new manufacturing-oriented simulation package for production management which provides important information for both design and operation of manufacturing systems. A simulation for production strategy in a Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) environment is also discussed. This paper is then followed by a contribution by Tanaka and colleagues in which they consider loading schedules for manufacturing orders in a Material Requirements Planning (MRP) environment. They compare mathematical programming with a knowledge-based approach, and comment on their relative effectiveness for different practical situations. Engstrom and Medbo's paper then looks at a particular aspect of production system design, namely the question of devising group working arrangements for assembly with new product structures. Using the case of a Swedish vehicle assembly plant where long cycle assembly work has been adopted, they advocate the use of a generally applicable product structure which can be adapted to suit individual local conditions. In the last paper of this particular group, Tay considers how automation has affected the production efficiency in Singapore. Using data from ten major industries he identifies several factors which are positively correlated with efficiency, with capital intensity being of greatest interest to policy makers. The two following papers examine the case of electronic data interchange (EDI) as a means of improving the efficiency and quality of trading relationships. Banerjee and Banerjee consider a particular approach to material provisioning for production systems using orderless inventory replenishment. Using the example of a single supplier and multiple buyers they develop an analytical model which is applicable for the exchange of information between trading partners using EDI. They conclude that EDI-based inventory control can be attractive from economic as well as other standpoints and that the approach is consistent with and can be instrumental in moving towards just-in-time (JIT) inventory management. Slacker's complementary viewpoint on EDI is from the perspective of the quality relation-ship between the customer and supplier. Based on the experience of Lucas, a supplier within the automotive industry, he concludes that both banks and trading companies must take responsibility for the development of payment mechanisms which satisfy the requirements of quality trading. The three final papers of this issue relate to technological innovation and are all country based. Berman and Khalil report on a survey of US technological effectiveness in the global economy. The importance of education is supported in their conclusions, although it remains unclear to what extent the US government can play a wider role in promoting technological innovation and new industries. The role of technology in national development is taken up by Martinsons and Valdemars who examine the case of the former Soviet Union. The failure to successfully infuse technology into Soviet enterprises is seen as a factor in that country's demise, and it is anticipated that the newly liberalised economies will be able to encourage greater technological creativity. This point is then taken up in Perminov's concluding paper which looks in detail at Russia. Here a similar analysis is made of the concluding paper which looks in detail at Russia. Here a similar analysis is made of the Soviet Union's technological decline, but a development strategy is also presented within the context of the change from a centralised to a free market economy. The papers included in this special issue of the International Journal of Technology Management each represent a unique and particular contribution to their own specific area of concern. Together, however, they also argue or demonstrate the general improvements in competitive performance that can be achieved through the application of modern principles and practice to the management of quality, production and technological innovation.

Tämän työn tavoitteena oli selvittää tietojohtamisen eri käytäntöjen vaikutusta oppimiseen, uudistumiseen sekä yrityksen innovaatiokyvykkyyteen. Työssä on keskitytty erityisesti sellaisiin tietojohtamisen käytäntöihin, jotka edistävät oppimista ja uusiutumista yrityksissä. Työssä on käytetty tilastollisia menetelmiä, muun muassa faktorianalyysia, korrelaatioanalyysia sekä regressiota, analysoitaessa 259 suomalaisesta yrityksestä kerättyä kyselydataa niiden tietojohtamisen käytöntöihin ja aineettomaan pääomaan liittyen. Analyysi osoittaa, että useat tietojohtamisen käytännöt vaikuttavat positiivisesti yrityksen uudistumiseen ja sitä kautta innovaatiokyvykkyyteen. Henkilöstön kouluttaminen sekä parhaiden käytäntöjen kerääminen ja soveltaminen yrityksessä ovat positiivisesti yhteydessä innovaatiokyvykkyyteen. Henkilöstön kouluttamisella on merkittävin suora vaikutus innovaatiokyvykkyyteen ja tässä työssä on esitetty, että koulutuksen tarjoamisen suurin vaikutus on oppimismyönteisen kulttuurin kehittyminen yrityksiin sen sijaan, että koulutuksella pyrittäisiin vain parantamaan tehtäväkenttään liittyviä taitoja ja tietoja. Henkilöstön kouluttaminen, parhaat käytännöt sekä sosialisaatiossa tapahtuva tiedon vaihto ja suhteiden solmiminen vaikuttavat positiivisesti uudistumispääomaan. Työn tulosten perusteella uudistumispääomalla on merkittävä rooli innovaatioiden syntymisessä yrityksissä. Uudistumispääoma medioi koulutuksen, parhaiden käytäntöjen ja mahdollisesti myös sosialisaation vaikutusta innovaatiokyvykkyyteen ja on näin merkittävä osa innovaatioiden syntyä yrityksissä. Innovaatiokyvykkyyden osatekijöiden ymmärtäminen voi auttaa johtajia ja esimiehiä keskittämään huomionsa tiettyihin tietojohtamisen käytäntöihin edistääkseen innovaatioiden syntymistä yrityksessä sen sijaan, että he pyrkisivät vain vaikuttamaan innovaatioprosessiin.

ARTIOLI, G. G., B. GUALANO, A. SMITH, J. STOUT, and A. H. LANCHA, JR. Role of beta-Alanine Supplementation on Muscle Carnosine and Exercise Performance. Med. Sci. Sports Exerc., Vol. 42, No. 6, pp. 1162-1173, 2010. In this narrative review, we present and discuss the current knowledge available on carnosine and beta-alanine metabolism as well as the effects of beta-alanine supplementation on exercise performance. Intramuscular acidosis has been attributed to be one of the main causes of fatigue during intense exercise. Carnosine has been shown to play a significant role in muscle pH regulation. Carnosine is synthesized in skeletal muscle from the amino acids L-histidine and beta-alanine. The rate-limiting factor of carnosine synthesis is beta-alanine availability. Supplementation with beta-alanine has been shown to increase muscle carnosine content and therefore total muscle buffer capacity, with the potential to elicit improvements in physical performance during high-intensity exercise. Studies on beta-alanine supplementation and exercise performance have demonstrated improvements in performance during multiple bouts of high-intensity exercise and in single bouts of exercise lasting more than 60 s. Similarly, beta-alanine supplementation has been shown to delay the onset of neuromuscular fatigue. Although beta-alanine does not improve maximal strength or (V) over dotO(2max), some aspects of endurance performance, such as anaerobic threshold and time to exhaustion, can be enhanced. Symptoms of paresthesia may be observed if a single dose higher than 800 mg is ingested. The symptoms, however, are transient and related to the increase in plasma concentration. They can be prevented by using controlled release capsules and smaller dosing strategies. No important side effect was related to the use of this amino acid so far. In conclusion, beta-alanine supplementation seems to be a safe nutritional strategy capable of improving high-intensity anaerobic performance.

Traditionally the basal ganglia have been implicated in motor behavior, as they are involved in both the execution of automatic actions and the modification of ongoing actions in novel contexts. Corresponding to cognition, the role of the basal ganglia has not been defined as explicitly. Relative to linguistic processes, contemporary theories of subcortical participation in language have endorsed a role for the globus pallidus internus (GPi) in the control of lexical-semantic operations. However, attempts to empirically validate these postulates have been largely limited to neuropsychological investigations of verbal fluency abilities subsequent to pallidotomy. We evaluated the impact of bilateral posteroventral pallidotomy (BPVP) on language function across a range of general and high-level linguistic abilities, and validated/extended working theories of pallidal participation in language. Comprehensive linguistic profiles were compiled up to 1 month before and 3 months after BPVP in 6 subjects with Parkinson's disease (PD). Commensurate linguistic profiles were also gathered over a 3-month period for a nonsurgical control cohort of 16 subjects with PD and a group of 16 non-neurologically impaired controls (NC). Nonparametric between-groups comparisons were conducted and reliable change indices calculated, relative to baseline/3-month follow-up difference scores. Group-wise statistical comparisons between the three groups failed to reveal significant postoperative changes in language performance. Case-by-case data analysis relative to clinically consequential change indices revealed reliable alterations in performance across several language variables as a consequence of BPVP. These findings lend support to models of subcortical participation in language, which promote a role for the GPi in lexical-semantic manipulation mechanisms. Concomitant improvements and decrements in postoperative performance were interpreted within the context of additive and subtractive postlesional effects. Relative to parkinsonian cohorts, clinically reliable versus statistically significant changes on a case by case basis may provide the most accurate method of characterizing the way in which pathophysiologically divergent basal ganglia linguistic circuits respond to BPVP.

We investigated the oviposition preference and larval performance of Helicoverpa armigera under laboratory conditions to determine if the oviposition preference of individual females on maize, cowpea and cotton correlates with offspring performance on the leaves of the same host plants. The host-plant preference hierarchy of females did not correlate with their offspring performance. Female moths chose host plants that contributed less to their offspring fitness. Plant effects accounted for the largest amount of variation in offspring performance, while the effects of female (family) was low. The offspring of most females (80%, n = 10) were broadly similar, but 20% (two out of 10), showed marked difference in their offspring performance across the host-plant species. Similarly, there was no relation between larval feeding preference and performance. However, like most laboratory experiments, our experi-mental design does not allow the evaluation of ecological factors (for example, natural enemies, host abundance, etc.) that can play an important role in larval performance in the field. Overall, the results highlight the importance of carrying out preference performance analysis on the individual or family level, rather than pooling individuals to obtain average population data.

Adequate supply of oxygen to the brain is critical for maintaining normal brain function. Severe hypoxia, such as that experienced during high altitude ascent, presents a unique challenge to brain oxygen (O2) supply. During high-intensity exercise, hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia leads to cerebral vasoconstriction, followed by reductions in cerebral blood flow (CBF), oxygen delivery (DO2), and tissue oxygenation. This reduced O2 supply to the brain could potentially account for the reduced performance typically observed during exercise in severe hypoxic conditions. The aims of this thesis were to document the effect of acute and chronic exposure to hypoxia on CBF control, and to determine the role of cerebral DO2 and tissue oxygenation in limiting performance during exercise in severe hypoxia. We assessed CBF, arterial O2 content (CaO2), haemoglobin concentration ([Hb]), partial pressure of arterial O2 (PaO2), cerebrovascular CO2 reactivity, ventilatory response to CO2, cerebral autoregulation (CA), and estimated cerebral DO2 (CBF ⨉ CaO2) at sea level (SL), upon ascent to 5,260 m (ALT1), and following 16 days of acclimatisation to 5,260 m (ALT16). We found an increase in CBF despite an elevated cerebrovascular CO2 reactivity at ALT1, which coincided with a reduced CA. Meanwhile, PaO2 was greatly decreased despite increased ventilatory drive at ALT1, resulting in a concomitant decrease in CaO2. At ALT16, CBF decreased towards SL values, while cerebrovascular CO2 reactivity and ventilatory drive were further elevated. Acclimatisation increased PaO2, [Hb], and therefore CaO2 at ALT16, but these changes did not improve CA compared to ALT1. No differences were observed in cerebral DO2 across SL, ALT1, and ALT16. Our findings demonstrate that cerebral DO2 is maintained during both acute and chronic exposure to 5,260 m, due to the reciprocal changes in CBF and CaO2. We measured middle cerebral artery velocity (MCAv: index of CBF), cerebral DO2, ventilation (VE), and performance during incremental cycling to exhaustion and 15km time trial cycling in both normoxia and severe hypoxia (11% O2, normobaric), with and without added CO2 to the inspirate (CO2 breathing). We found MCAv was higher during exercise in severe hypoxia compared in normoxia, while cerebral tissue oxygenation and DO2 were reduced. CO2 breathing was effective in preventing the development of hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia during intense exercise in both normoxia and hypoxia. As a result, we were able to increase both MCAv and cerebral DO2 during exercise in hypoxia with our CO2 breathing setup. However, we concomitantly increased VE and PaO2 (and presumably respiratory work) due to the increased hypercapnic stimuli with CO2 breathing, which subsequently contributed to the cerebral DO2 increase during hypoxic exercise. While we effectively restored cerebral DO2 during exercise in hypoxia to normoxic values with CO2 breathing, we did not observe any improvement in cerebral tissue oxygenation or exercise performance. Accordingly, our findings do not support the role of reduced cerebral DO2 in limiting exercise performance in severe hypoxia. -- Un apport adéquat en oxygène au niveau du cerveau est primordial pour le maintien des fonctions cérébrales normales. L'hypoxie sévère, telle qu'expérimentée au cours d'ascensions en haute altitude, présente un défi unique pour l'apport cérébral en oxygène (O2). Lors d'exercices à haute intensité, l'hypocapnie induite par l'hyperventilation entraîne une vasoconstriction cérébrale suivie par une réduction du flux sanguin cérébral (CBF), de l'apport en oxygène (DO2), ainsi que de l'oxygénation tissulaire. Cette réduction de l'apport en O2 au cerveau pourrait potentiellement être responsable de la diminution de performance observée au cours d'exercices en condition d'hypoxie sévère. Les buts de cette thèse étaient de documenter l'effet de l'exposition aiguë et chronique à l'hypoxie sur le contrôle du CBF, ainsi que de déterminer le rôle du DO2 cérébral et de l'oxygénation tissulaire comme facteurs limitant la performance lors d'exercices en hypoxie sévère. Nous avons mesuré CBF, le contenu artériel en oxygène (CaO2), la concentration en hémoglobine ([Hb]), la pression partielle artérielle en O2 (PaO2), la réactivité cérébrovasculaire au CO2, la réponse ventilatoire au CO2, et l'autorégulation cérébrale sanguine (CA), et estimé DO2 cérébral (CBF x CaO2), au niveau de la mer (SL), au premier jour à 5.260 m (ALT1) et après seize jours d'acclimatation à 5.260 m (ALT16). Nous avons trouvé des augmentations du CBF et de la réactivité cérébrovasculaire au CO2 après une ascension à 5.260 m. Ces augmentations coïncidaient avec une réduction de l'autorégulation cérébrale. Simultanément, la PaO2 était grandement réduite, malgré l'augmentation de la ventilation (VE), résultant en une diminution de la CaO2. Après seize jours d'acclimatation à 5.260 m, le CBF revenait autour des valeurs observées au niveau de la mer, alors que la réactivité cérébrovasculaire au CO2 et la VE augmentaient par rapport à ALT1. L'acclimatation augmentait la PaO2, la concentration en hémoglobine, et donc la CaO2, mais n'améliorait pas l'autorégulation cérébrale, comparé à ALT1. Aucune différence n'était observée au niveau du DO2 cérébral entre SL, ALT1 et ALT16. Nos résultats montrent que le DO2 cérébral est maintenu constant lors d'expositions aiguë et chronique à 5.260m, ce qui s'explique par la réciprocité des variations du CBF et de la CaO2. Nous avons mesuré la vitesse d'écoulement du sang dans l'artère cérébrale moyenne (MCAv : un indice du CBF), le DO2 cérébral, la VE et la performance lors d'exercice incrémentaux jusqu'à épuisement sur cycloergomètre, ainsi que des contre-la-montres de 15 km en normoxie et en hypoxie sévère (11% O2, normobarique) ; avec ajout ou non de CO2 dans le mélange gazeux inspiré. Nous avons trouvé que MCAv était plus haute pendant l'exercice hypoxique, comparé à la normoxie alors que le DO2 cérébral était réduit. L'ajout de CO2 dans le gaz inspiré était efficace pour prévenir l'hypocapnie induite par l'hyperventilation, qui se développe à l'exercice intense, à la fois en normoxie et en hypoxie. Nous avons pu augmenter MCAv et le DO2 cérébral pendant l'exercice hypoxique, grâce à l'ajout de CO2. Cependant, nous avons augmenté la VE et la PaO2 (et probablement le travail respiratoire) à cause de l'augmentation du stimulus hypercapnique. Alors que nous avons, grâce à l'ajout de CO2, efficacement restauré le DO2 cérébral au cours de l'exercice en hypoxie à des valeurs obtenues en normoxie, nous n'avons observé aucune amélioration dans l'oxygénation du tissu cérébral ou de la performance. En conséquence, nos résultats ne soutiennent pas le rôle d'un DO2 cérébral réduit comme facteur limitant de la performance en hypoxie sévère.
