The host-guest technique has been applied to the determination of the helix-coil stability constants of two naturally occurring amino acids, L-alanine and L-leucine, in a nonaqueous solvent system. Random copolymers containing L-alanine and L-leucine, respectively, as guest residues and -benzyl-L-glutamate as the host residue were synthesized. The polymers were fractionated and characterized for their amino acid content, molecular weight, and helix-coil transition behavior in a dichloroacetic acid (DCA)-1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) mixture. Two types of helix-coil transitions were carried out on the copolymers: solvent-induced transitions in DCA-DCE mixtures at 25°C and thermally induced transitions in a 82:18 (wt %) DCA-DCE mixture. The thermally induced transitions were analyzed by statistical mechanical methods to determine the Zimm-Bragg parameters, and s, of the guest residues. The experimental data indicate that, in the nonaqueous solvent, the L-alanine residue stabilizes the -helical conformation more than the L-leucine residue does. This is in contrast to their behavior in aqueous solution, where the reverse is true. The implications of this finding for the analysis of helical structures in globular proteins are discussed.

By incorporating two phosphorescent dyes, namely, iridium(III)[bis(4,6-difluorophenyl)-pyridinato-N,C-2']picolinate (Flrpic) for blue emission and bis(2-(9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)-1-phenyl-1 H-benzoimidazol-N,C-3) iridium(acetylacetonate) ((fbi)(2)Ir(acac)) for orange emission, into a single-energy well-like emissive layer, an extremely high-efficiency white organic light-emitting diode (WOLED) with excellent color stability is demonstrated. This device can achieve a peak forward-viewing power efficiency of 42.5 lm W-1, corresponding to an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 19.3% and a current efficiency of 52.8 cd A(-1). Systematic studies of the dopants, host and dopant-doped host films in terms of photophysical properties (including absorption, photoluminescence, and excitation spectra), transient photoluminescence, current density-voltage characteristics, and temperature-dependent electroluminescence spectra are subsequently performed, from which it is concluded that the emission natures of Flrpic and (fbi)(2)Ir(acac) are, respectively, host-guest energy transfer and a direct exciton formation process. These two parallel pathways serve to channel the overall excitons to both dopants, greatly reducing unfavorable energy losses.

One inorganic-organic hybrid and two host-guest complexes were synthesized from calix[4] arene tetra acetic ether derivative( C60H80O12, L) and potassium polyoxometalates. The structures of the complexes were characterized with the elemental analysis, IR, TG-DTA and X-crystallographic. X-ray crystallographic studies reveal the formation of an ionic crystal, which contains a calix-cluster and calix-cluster-calix line array, and belongs to a typical inorganic-organic hybrid ( complex 1) or has a host-guest structure ( complex 2 and 3). The results of cyclic voltammograms at different scanning rates showed that the anode peak current of complex 1 was proportional to the square root of the scanning rate and the charge transfer process was controlled by pervasion. The anode peak current of complexes 2 and 3 was proportional to the scanning rate and the charge transfer process was controlled by the surface. The results suggest that there are consanguineous relationship between the anode reaction and the structure.

The supramolecular self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of C-60 by thiolated beta-cyclodextrin (CD) on gold surfaces were constructed for the first time using C-60 monoanion. The results indicate that monoanionic C-60 plays a crucial role in the formation of the C-60-containing self-assembled monolayers. The generation of C-60 monoanion and the formation process of C-60 SAMs were monitored in-situ by UV-visible and near-IR spectroscopy. The resulting C-60 SAMs were fully characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and water contact angle measurements. After the immobilization of C-60 by the SAMs of thiolated beta-CD, the film thickness increased by approximately 1 nm from 0.8 to 1.8 nm as determined by SE, demonstrating the formation of the supramolecular self-assembled monolayers of thiolated beta-CD/C-60. The new C-60 SAMs exhibited one quasi-reversible redox couple at half wave potential of -0.57 V vs SCE in aqueous solution containing 0.1 M KCl. The surface coverage of C-60 on the gold surfaces was estimated to be 1.1 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2). The XPS showed the assembly of C-60 over the thiolated beta-CD SAMs.

An investigation into the interactions between thiamine monophosphate (TMP) and anions has resulted in the preparation and X-ray characterization of the compounds (TMP)(Hg2Br5).0.5H(2)O (1) and (TMP)(2)(Hg3I8) (2). In each compound the TMP molecule exists as a monovalent cation in the usual F conformation. The halogenomercurate anions occur in two-dimensional (2-D) network in 1 or one-dimensional (1-D) chain in 2. In both 1 and 2, the structures consist of alternating cationic sheets of the hydrogen-bonded TMP molecules and anionic sheets of the polymeric halogenomercurate anions. The TMP molecule binds to the polymeric anions through the characteristic 'anion bridge I', C(2)-H..X...pyrimidinium (X = Br in 1 and 1 in 2), and electrostatic interactions between electropositive S(1) and halogen atoms. The 'anion bridge II' of the type N(4'1)-H...X...thiazolium (X = phosphate group) plays a role in stabilizing the molecular conformation. The biological implication of the host-guest-like complexation between TMP and polymeric anions is discussed.

Sodium ion transfer across micro-water/1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) interface facilitated by a novel ionophore, terminal-vinyl liquid crystal crown ether (LCCE) was studied by cyclic voltammetry. LCCEs have potential applications because of their physicochemical properties and the utilization of crown ethers as selective ionophoric units in other functionalized compounds are interesting. Host-guest-type behavior for such compounds in the liquid-crystalline state is studied. The experimental results suggest that the transfer of the sodium ion facilitated by LCCE was controlled by diffusion of LCCE from bulk solution of DCE to the interface. The diffusion coefficient of LCCE in DCE was calculated to be equal to (3.62 +/- 0.20) x 10(-6) cm(2)/s. Steady-state voltammograms are due to sodium ion transfer facilitated by the formation of 1: 1 metal (M)-LCCE complex at the interface and the mechanism tends to be transfer by interfacial complexation or dissociation (TIC or TID). The stability constant of the complex formed was determined to be log beta(o) = 5.5 in DCE phase. The influence of parameters such as concentration of sodium ion and concentration of LCCE on the sodium ion transfer was investigated.

MCM-41-hosted fluorescein mesophase was prepared by addition of the dye into the sol-gel mixture for the synthesis of MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieve under microwave radiation. The as-synthesized organo-silica-surfactant material possessed hexagonal mesostructure with short-range symmetry and a uniform nanosize of about 30 nm. Furthermore, fluorescence spectrum, increase in lifetime and lack of aggregation at high concentration were discussed in terms of the effect of the host-guest interaction on these properties. Cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]) are macrocyclic host molecules with subnanometer dimensions capable of binding to gold surfaces. Aggregation of gold nanoparticles with CB[n] produces a repeatable, fixed, and rigid interparticle separation of 0.9 nm, and thus such assemblies possess distinct and exquisitely sensitive plasmonics. Understanding the plasmonic evolution is key to their use as powerful SERS substrates. Furthermore, this unique spatial control permits fast nanoscale probing of the plasmonics of the aggregates "glued" together by CBs within different kinetic regimes using simultaneous extinction and SERS measurements. The kinetic rates determine the topology of the aggregates including the constituent structural motifs and allow the identification of discrete plasmon modes which are attributed to disordered chains of increasing lengths by theoretical simulations. The CBs directly report the near-field strength of the nanojunctions they create via their own SERS, allowing calibration of the enhancement. Owing to the unique barrel-shaped geometry of CB[n] and their ability to bind "guest" molecules, the aggregates afford a new type of in situ self-calibrated and reliable SERS substrate where molecules can be selectively trapped by the CB[n] and exposed to the nanojunction plasmonic field. Using this concept, a powerful molecular-recognition-based SERS assay is demonstrated by selective cucurbit[n]uril host-guest complexation.

The recent synthesis of a new hydrogen binary hydrate with the sH structure has highlighted the potential storage capabilities of water clathrates [T. A. Strobel, C. A. Koh, and E. D. Sloan, J. Phys. Chem. B 112, 1885 (2008) and A. R. C. Duarte, A. Shariati, L. J. Rovetto, and C. J. Peters, J. Phys. Chem. B 112, 1888 (2008)]. In this work, the absorption of hydrogen and the promoters used in the experimental work are considered using a simplified model for the host-guest interaction, which allows one to understand the stabilizing effects of multiple help molecules. Two further hypothetical clathrates, which are isostructural with known zeolite structures, are also investigated. It is shown that the energy gained by absorbing adamantane into these two frameworks is far greater than that gained upon absorption of adamantane into the sH structure. Hence, a clathrate with the same topology as the DDR (Sigma 1) zeolite may be synthesizable with adamantane and hydrogen as guest molecules as, in the conditions explored here, this phase appears to be more stable than the sH structure. Different types of gels were prepared by combining poloxamines (Tetronic), i.e. poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(propylene oxide) (PEO/PPO) octablock star copolymers, and cyclodextrins (CD). Two different poloxamines with the same molecular weight (ca. 7000) but different molecular architectures were used. For each of their four diblock arms, direct Tetronic 904 presents PEO outer blocks while in reverse Tetronic 90R4 the hydrophilic PEO blocks are the inner ones. These gels were prepared by combining alpha-CD and poloxamine aqueous solutions. The physicochemical properties of these systems depend on several factors such as the structure of the block copolymers and the Tetronic/alpha-CD ratio. These gels were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), viscometry and X-ray diffraction measurements. The 90R4 gels present a consistency that makes them suitable for sustained drug delivery. The resulting gels were easily eroded: these complexes were dismantled when placed in a large amount of water, so controlled release of entrapped large molecules such as proteins (Bovine Serum Albumin, BSA) is feasible and can be tuned by varying the copolymer/CD ratio.

A biomimetic sensor for norfloxacin is presented that is based on host-guest interactions and potentiometric transduction. The artificial host was imprinted into polymers made from methacrylic acid and/or 2-vinyl pyridine. The resulting particles were entrapped in a plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) matrix. The sensors exhibit near-Nernstian response in steady state evaluations, and detection limits range from 0.40 to 1.0 μgmL−1, respectively, and are independent of pH values at between 2 and 6, and 8 and 11, respectively. Good selectivity was observed over several potential interferents. In flowing media, the sensors exhibit fast response, a sensitivity of 68.2 mV per decade, a linear range from 79 μM to 2.5 mM, a detection limit of 20 μgmL−1, and a stable baseline. The sensors were successfully applied to field monitoring of norfloxacin in fish samples, biological samples, and pharmaceutical products

Dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers are a relatively new class of materials with unique molecular architectures and dimensions in comparison to traditional linear polymers. This review details recent notable advances in the application of these new polymers in terms of the development of new polymeric delivery systems. Although comparatively young, the developing field of hyperbranched drug delivery devices is a rapidly maturing area and the key discoveries in drug-conjugate systems amongst others are highlighted. As a consequence of their ideal hyperbranched architectures, the utilisation of host-guest chemistries in dendrimers has been included within the scope of this review. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd.
