Potential Human Exposure to Australian Bat Lyssavirus, Queensland, 1996-1999

Two human deaths caused by Australian bat lyssavirus (ABL) infection have been reported since 1996. Information was obtained from 205 persons (mostly adults from south Brisbane and the South Coast of Queensland), who reported potential ABL exposure to the Brisbane Southside Public Health Unit from November 1,1996, to January 31, 1999. Volunteer animal handlers accounted for 39% of potential exposures, their family members for 12%, professional animal handlers for 14%, community members who intentionally handled bats for 31%, and community members with contacts initiated by bats for 4%. The prevalence of Lyssavirus detected by fluorescent antibody test in 366 sick, injured, or orphaned bats from the area was 6%. Sequelae of exposure, including the requirement for expensive postexposure prophylaxis, may be reduced by educating bat handlers and the public of the risks involved in handling Australian bats.

Suomalaiset Viron-matkailijat virolaisessa sanomalehdistössä : Tekstianalyysia vuosien 1996 1997 ja 2003 2004 sanomalehtiteksteistä

Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan Viron suurimpien päivälehtien, Postimees ja Eesti Päevaleht, suomalaisia Viron-matkailijoita käsitteleviä tekstejä vuosilta 1996 1997 ja 2003 2004. Ajanjaksot on valittu sillä perusteella, että toukokuussa 1997 astui voimaan viisumivapaus Suomen ja Viron välillä matkustettaessa ja toukokuussa 2004 Viro liittyi EU:n jäseneksi. Tutkittavia tekstejä vuosilta 1996 1997 on 12 ja vuosilta 2003 2004 on 62 tekstiä, joista 19 on valittu tarkempaan analyysiin. Tavoitteena on tutkia, millainen kuva suomalaisesta Viron-matkailijasta tekstien kautta paljastuu ja millaisin keinoin sitä välitetään. Tarkastellaan myös sitä, onko kuva ajanjaksojen välillä muuttunut, ja jos on, niin miten. Tekstejä tutkitaan kriittisen tekstianalyysin keinoin ja pääasiassa tukeudutaan M. A. K. Hallidayn ja Vesa Heikkisen tutkimuksiin. Hallidayn systeemis-funktionaalisessa kieliopissa keskeisiä ovat kielelliset valinnat ja ajatus kielen kolmesta merkitystasosta, jotka ovat ideationaalinen, tekstuaalinen ja interpersoonainen. Tämän työn kannalta merkittävä on interpersoonainen taso, jolla tarkastellaan muun muassa kirjoittajan asenteita ja arvotuksia. Teksteistä etsitään erilaisia kielen keinoja, jotka ilmaisevat kirjoittajien asennoitumista suomalaisiin. Keskeistä on se, ovatko kirjoittajien arvotukset negatiivisia, neutraaleja vai positiivisia. Arvottavien asenteiden kautta muotoutuu tutkittavien tekstien kuva suomalaisista Viron-matkailijoista. Aineistosta nousee esiin kahdeksan erilaista arvotuksia ilmaisevaa kielellistä keinoa: aihevalinnat (otsikointi), nimeäminen, kuvailu, määritteet, verbivalinnat, vihjaukset, edellyttämykset ja lauseen informaatiorakenne. Analyysin perusteella selviää, että kuva suomalaisesta Viron-matkailijasta on hieman muuttunut tarkasteltavien ajanjaksojen välillä. Vuosien 1996 1997 tekstien mukaan suomalainen matkailija on rikas, mutta saita ja etsii Virosta edullisia tuotteita ja palveluita. Hän on tavallisesti keski-ikäinen ja humalassa tai vähintään ostamassa alkoholia. Negatiivinen suhtautuminen nousee selvästi esille. Vuosien 2003 2004 teksteissä kuva suomalaisista on monipuolistunut verrattuna aikaisempaan. Edelleen suomalaisille kuitenkin maistuu alkoholi ja he etsivät edullisuutta. Edullisuuden tavoittelu ja hamstraaminen korostuvat aiempaakin enemmän. Tutkimuksen kautta esiin tulleet kuvat suomalaisista Viron-matkailijoista ovat kyseisten ajanjaksojen sanomalehdistön välittämiä. Jatkossa olisi mielenkiintoista tutkia tekstejä joltain sellaiselta ajanjaksolta, johon ei liity matkustamisen helpottumiseen vaikuttavia muutoksia. Voitaisiin tutkia myös sitä, mitä mieltä tavalliset virolaiset ovat suomalaisista matkailijoista ja mitä virolaiset matkailupalveluyritysten edustajat suomalaisista ajattelevat. Näin ilmiötä voitaisiin lähestyä useammasta näkökulmasta.

Comparative analysis of Tritrichomonas foetus (Riedmuller, 1928) cat genotype, T. foetus (Riedmuller, 1928) cattle genotype and Tritrichomonas suis (Davaine, 1875) at 10 DNA loci

The parasitic protists in the genus Tritrichomonas cause significant disease in domestic cattle and cats. To assess the genetic diversity of feline and bovine isolates of Tritrichomonas foetus (Riedmuller, 1928) Wenrich and Emmerson, 1933, we used 10 different genetic regions, namely the protein coding genes of cysteine proteases 1,2 and 4-9 (CP1, 2, 4-9) involved in the pathogenesis of the disease caused by the parasite. The cytosolic malate dehydrogenase 1 (MDH1) and internal transcribed spacer region 2 of the rDNA unit (ITS2) were included as additional markers. The gene sequences were compared with those of Tritrichomonas suis (Davaine. 1875) Morgan and Hawkins, 1948 and Tritrichomonas mobilensis Culberson et al., 1986. The study revealed 100% identity for all 10 genes among all feline isolates (=T. foetus cat genotype), 100% identity among all bovine isolates (=T. foetus cattle genotype) and a genetic distinctness of 1% between the cat and cattle genotypes of T. foetus. The cattle genotype of T. foetus was 100% identical to T. suis at nine loci (CP1, 2,4-8, ITS2, MDH1). At CP9, three out of four T. suis isolates were identical to the T. foetus cattle genotype, while the T. suis isolate SUI-H3B sequence contained a single unique nucleotide substitution. Tritrichomonas mobilensis was 0.4% and 0.7% distinct from the cat and cattle genotypes of T. foetus, respectively. The genetic differences resulted in amino acid changes in the CP genes, most pronouncedly in CP2, potentially providing a platform for elucidation of genotype-specific host-pathogen interactions of T. foetus. On the basis of this data we judge T. suis and T. foetus to be subjective synonyms. For the first time, on objective nomenclatural grounds, the authority of T. suis is given to Davaine, 1875, rather than the commonly cited Gruby and Delafond, 1843. To maintain prevailing usage of T. foetus, we are suppressing the senior synomym T. suis Davaine, 1875 according to Article 23.9, because it has never been used as a valid name after 1899 and T. foetus is widely discussed as the cause of bovine trichomonosis. Thus bovine, feline and porcine isolates should all be given the name T. foetus. This promotes the stability of T. foetus for the veterinary and economically significant venereal parasite causing bovine trichomonosis. (C) 2012 Australian Society for Parasitology Inc. The sublime, affective process + architectural production

A year before Kate Nesbitt’s Theorising a New Agenda For Architecture (1996), the author penned a chapter on the significance of the sublime and its contribution to post-modern architecture via the uncanny or disturbing through the theories of Vidler and Eisenman (Nesbit, 1995). Twenty years on, we see its ongoing presence within the contemporary works of artists Kapoor, Ellison and Viola. Eisenmann and Libeskind aside, explicit reference to the Sublime whether through architectural praxis or theory appears to have been trumped by ecological derivatives and associated transactions, as catalyst for new architecture and architectural thinking. For Edmund Burke (1757), the Sublime was seen as a leading, an overpowering of self to a state of intense self-presence, often leading to a state of otherness. To experience the sublime is to experience affect, physiologically overwhelming the mental faculties through intensities of astonishment, terror, obscurity, magnificence, and reverence. Key here is Burke’s articulation of the stages of the sublime encounter, particularly so, its implications for the process of production which architectural theorists appear to have overstepped in their valorisation of the sublime object. This paper seeks to resituate the sublime within the context of architectural production. Through concepts such as material thinking, bodies and making strange, the paper explores a shift in focus toward affective processes traced from Burke’s inquiry. Rather than proposing strategies solely for affect within the work itself, the focus lies upon the designing experience, where blockage and desirous forces are critical partners in the process of production, as revealed through recent studio programs entitled Strange Space.

This collection contains the papers of Ernest W. Michel, Holocaust Survivor Journalist and public speaker,including clippings of newspaper articles written by and about Michel, correspondence between Michel and many important Jewish and political figures and autograph files, which Michel collected. Many of these files concern Michel’s Holocaust experiences, speaking engagements, the World Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, and Michel’s work with the United Jewish Appeal.
