This paper presents a methodology which is based on statistical failure and repair data of the transmission power system components and uses fuzzyprobabilistic modeling for system component outage parameters. Using statistical records allows developing the fuzzy membership functions of system component outage parameters. The proposed hybrid method of fuzzy set and Monte Carlo simulation based on the fuzzy-probabilistic models allows catching both randomness and fuzziness of component outage parameters. A network contingency analysis to identify any overloading or voltage violation in the network is performed once obtained the system states by Monte Carlo simulation. This is followed by a remedial action algorithm, based on optimal power flow, to reschedule generations and alleviate constraint violations and, at the same time, to avoid any load curtailment, if possible, or, otherwise, to minimize the total load curtailment, for the states identified by the contingency analysis. In order to illustrate the application of the proposed methodology to a practical case, the paper will include a case study for the Reliability Test System (RTS) 1996 IEEE 24 BUS.

This paper presents a comparison between proportional integral control approaches for variable speed wind turbines. Integer and fractional-order controllers are designed using linearized wind turbine model whilst fuzzy controller also takes into account system nonlinearities. These controllers operate in the full load region and the main objective is to extract maximum power from the wind turbine while ensuring the performance and reliability required to be integrated into an electric grid. The main contribution focuses on the use of fractional-order proportional integral (FOPI) controller which benefits from the introduction of one more tuning parameter, the integral fractional-order, taking advantage over integer order proportional integral (PI) controller. A comparison between proposed control approaches for the variable speed wind turbines is presented using a wind turbine benchmark model in the Matlab/Simulink environment. Results show that FOPI has improved system performance when compared with classical PI and fuzzy PI controller outperforms the integer and fractional-order control due to its capability to deal with system nonlinearities and uncertainties. © 2014 IEEE.

The IntFOLD-TS method was developed according to the guiding principle that the model quality assessment would be the most critical stage for our template based modelling pipeline. Thus, the IntFOLD-TS method firstly generates numerous alternative models, using in-house versions of several different sequence-structure alignment methods, which are then ranked in terms of global quality using our top performing quality assessment method – ModFOLDclust2. In addition to the predicted global quality scores, the predictions of local errors are also provided in the resulting coordinate files, using scores that represent the predicted deviation of each residue in the model from the equivalent residue in the native structure. The IntFOLD-TS method was found to generate high quality 3D models for many of the CASP9 targets, whilst also providing highly accurate predictions of their per-residue errors. This important information may help to make the 3D models that are produced by the IntFOLD-TS method more useful for guiding future experimental work

When using linguistic approaches to solve decision problems, we need the techniques for computing with words (CW). Together with the 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic representation models (i.e., the Herrera and Mart´ınez model and the Wang and Hao model), some computational techniques for CW are also developed. In this paper, we define the concept of numerical scale and extend the 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic representation models under the numerical scale. We find that the key of computational techniques
based on linguistic 2-tuples is to set suitable numerical scale with
the purpose of making transformations between linguistic 2-tuples
and numerical values. By defining the concept of the transitive
calibration matrix and its consistent index, this paper develops an optimization model to compute the numerical scale of the linguistic term set. The desired properties of the optimization model are also presented. Furthermore, we discuss how to construct the transitive calibration matrix for decision problems using linguistic preference relations and analyze the linkage between the consistent index of the transitive calibration matrix and one of the linguistic preference relations. The results in this paper are pretty helpful to complete the fuzzy 2-tuple representation models for CW.

This paper proposes a new class of fuzzy implications, built according to the well-known (S,N) scheme but in such a way that the t-conorm S is replaced with a compensatory TS function (an aggregation function combining a t-norm and a t-conorm). The basic properties of such implications are studied, and different examples are provided.

In this paper, a robust learning control is developed for a class of single input single output (SISO) nonlinear systems with T-S fuzzy model. It is seen that the proposed sliding mode learning control with the powerful Lipshitz-like condition can guarantee the stability, convergence and robustness of the closed-loop system without involving any assumptions on uncertain system dynamics. In addition, theconcept that the local system with the maximum membership function dominates the system dynamic behaviours helps to greatly simplify the control system design. It will be further seen that the continuous learning control ensures the advantage of chattering-free that may occur in conventional sliding mode systems. Simulation examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed learning control through the comparison with the H-infinity control.

An improved evolving model, i.e., Evolving Tree (ETree) with Fuzzy c-Means (FCM), is proposed for undertaking text document visualization problems in this study. ETree forms a hierarchical tree structure in which nodes (i.e., trunks) are allowed to grow and split into child nodes (i.e., leaves), and each node represents a cluster of documents. However, ETree adopts a relatively simple approach to split its nodes. Thus, FCM is adopted as an alternative to perform node splitting in ETree. An experimental study using articles from a flagship conference of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), i.e., Engineering Conference (ENCON), is conducted. The experimental results are analyzed and discussed, and the outcome shows that the proposed ETree-FCM model is effective for undertaking text document clustering and visualization problems.

This paper proposes a combination of fuzzy standard additive model (SAM) with wavelet features for medical diagnosis. Wavelet transformation is used to reduce the dimension of high-dimensional datasets. This helps to improve the convergence speed of supervised learning process of the fuzzy SAM, which has a heavy computational burden in high-dimensional data. Fuzzy SAM becomes highly capable when deployed with wavelet features. This combination remarkably reduces its computational training burden. The performance of the proposed methodology is examined for two frequently used medical datasets: the lump breast cancer and heart disease. Experiments are deployed with a five-fold cross validation. Results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared to other machine learning methods including probabilistic neural network, support vector machine, fuzzy ARTMAP, and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system. Faster convergence but higher accuracy shows a win-win solution of the proposed approach.

A study on the pedestrian's steering behaviour through a built environment in normal circumstances is presented in this paper. The study focuses on the relationship between the environment and the pedestrian's walking trajectory. Owing to the ambiguity and vagueness of the relationship between the pedestrians and the surrounding environment, a genetic fuzzy system is proposed for modelling and simulation of the pedestrian's walking trajectory confronting the environmental stimuli. We apply the genetic algorithm to search for the optimum membership function parameters of the fuzzy model. The proposed system receives the pedestrian's perceived stimuli from the environment as the inputs, and provides the angular change of direction in each step as the output. The environmental stimuli are quantified using the Helbing social force model. Attractive and repulsive forces within the environment represent various environmental stimuli that influence the pedestrian's walking trajectory at each point of the space. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model, three experiments are conducted. The first experimental results are validated against real walking trajectories of participants within a corridor. The second and third experimental results are validated against simulated walking trajectories collected from the AnyLogic® software. Analysis and statistical measurement of the results indicate that the genetic fuzzy system with optimised membership functions produces more accurate and stable prediction of heterogeneous pedestrians' walking trajectories than those from the original fuzzy model. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. In this paper, the fuzzy Lyapunov function approach is considered for stabilizing continuous-time Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems. Previous linear matrix inequality (LMI) stability conditions are relaxed by exploring further the properties of the time derivatives of premise membership functions and by introducing a slack LMI variable into the problem formulation. The stability results are thus used in the state feedback design which is also solved in terms of LMIs. Numerical examples illustrate the efficiency of the new stabilizing conditions presented. © 2011 IFAC.

In this article, the fuzzy Lyapunov function approach is considered for stabilising continuous-time Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems. Previous linear matrix inequality (LMI) stability conditions are relaxed by exploring further the properties of the time derivatives of premise membership functions and by introducing slack LMI variables into the problem formulation. The relaxation conditions given can also be used with a class of fuzzy Lyapunov functions which also depends on the membership function first-order time-derivative. The stability results are thus extended to systems with large number of rules under membership function order relations and used to design parallel-distributed compensation (PDC) fuzzy controllers which are also solved in terms of LMIs. Numerical examples illustrate the efficiency of the new stabilising conditions presented. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
