A rapid potentiometric method for measuring ionic and total fluorine concentrations in sea water with aid of a fluorine-selective electrode is described and corresponding measurements in the 0-2000 m layer of the western Sargasso Sea and in the Gulf Stream are given. Preparation of samples and performance of measurements are described.

An express potentiometric method for determination of total and ionic concentrations of fluorine in sea water was developed, using a fluorine selective electrode as a sensor, with a lanthanum fluoride single crystal membrane. The minimum fluorine concentration measurable by the method is 0.2 mg/liter. Relative accuracy of determinations is +/-4% in 1 to 2 mg/liter fluorine concentration range. One determination requires no more than 20 minutes.

TiO2 nanoparticles with tailored morphology have been synthesized under exceptionally soft conditions. The strategy is based on the use of a non-aqueous alcoholic reaction medium in which water traces, coming either from the air (atmospheric water) or from an ethanol–water azeotropic mixture (ethanol 96%), are incorporated in order to accelerate hydrolysis of the Ti–precursor. Moreover, organic surfactants have been used as capping agents so as to tailor crystal growth in certain preferential directions. Combinations of oleic acid and oleylamine, which lead to the formation of another surfactant, dioleamide, are employed instead of fluorine-based compounds, thus increasing the sustainability of the process. As a result, TiO2 nanostructured hierarchical microspheres and individual nanoparticles with exposed high-energy facets can be obtained at atmospheric pressure and temperatures as low as 78 °C.

Using C60-functionalized scanning tunneling microscope tips, we have investigated the adsorption of fluorine on graphite. Based on characteristics of the accompanying electron standing waves, we are able to distinguish the fluorine adatoms that have bonded ionically to the graphite surface from those that have formed covalent bonds with the surface. This result permits determination of the ratio of ionic to covalent C–F bonds on graphite obtained by gas phase fluorination, which seems to be temperatureindependent between 200 and 300°C under the reaction conditions used.

1-Benzyl-3-(2-hydroxy-2-phenylethyl)imidazolium chloride (5), which is a precursor of an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, in combination with palladium acetate, has been employed as an effective catalyst for the fluorine-free Hiyama reaction. A systematic study of the catalytic mixture, by a 32 factorial design, has revealed that both the amount of palladium and the Pd/NHC precursor ratio are important factors for obtaining good yields of the coupling products, indicating an interaction between them. The best catalytic system involves mixing 0.1 mol-% palladium acetate in a 1:5 ratio (Pd/salt 5), which allows the effective coupling of a range of aryl bromides and chlorides with trimethoxy(phenyl)silane. The Hiyama reactions are carried out in NaOH solution (50 % H2O w/w), at 120 °C under microwave irradiation during 60 min.

A variety of hydroxy- and amino-functionalized imidazoles were prepared from 1-methyl- and 1-(diethoxymethyl)imidazole by means of isoprene-mediated lithiation followed by reaction with an electrophile. These compounds in combination with palladium acetate were screened as catalyst systems for the Hiyama reaction under fluorine-free conditions using microwave irradiation. The systematic study of the catalytic system showed 1-methyl-2-aminoalkylimidazole derivative L1 to be the best ligand, which was employed under solvent-free conditions with a 1:2 Pd/ligand ratio and TBAB (20 mol-%) as additive. The study has revealed an interaction between the Pd/ligand ratio and the amount of TBAB. The established catalytic system presented a certain degree of robustness, and it has been successfully employed in the coupling of a range of aryl bromides and chlorides with different aryl siloxanes. Furthermore, both reagents were employed in an equimolecular amount, without an excess of organosilane.

Estrogens can be labeled with the positron-emitting radionuclide fluorine-18 (t$\sb{1/2}$ = 110 min) by fluoride ion (n-Bu$\sb4$N$\sp{18}$F) displacement of a 16$\beta$-trifluoromethanesulfonate (triflate) derivative of the corresponding estrone 3-triflate, and purification by HPLC. That sequence has been used to synthesize the 11$\beta$-methoxy 1 and 11$\beta$-ethyl 2 analogues of the breast tumor imaging agent, 16$\alpha$-($\sp{18}$F) fluoro-17$\beta$-estradiol (FES). Tissue distribution studies of 1 and 2 in immature female rats show high selectivity for target tissue (T, uterus) vs non-target (NT, muscle and lung), with T/NT ratios being 43 and 17 at one hour after injection for 1 and 2, respectively. The parent estrogen FES has previously been shown to display an intermediate value for tissue selectivity.
