This manual includes an introduction to the general biology, a selected bibliography, and an illustrated key to 11 genera and 17 species of copepods of the Crustacea, Subclass Copepoda, Order Cyclopoida, Families Archinotodelphyidae, Notodelphyidae and Ascidicolidae, associated with ascidians from the Atlantic Coast of the United States. Species distributed from the Gulf of Maine to Long Island Sound are emphasized. Marine Flora and Fauna of the Northeastern United States Echinodermata: Crinoidea

The crinoid fauna of the continental margin (0-1500 m) of northeastern North America (Georgia to Canada) includes 14 species in 13 genera and 5 families. We introduce the external morphology and natural history of crinoids and include a glossary of terms, an illustrated key to local taxa, annotated systematic list, and an index. The fauna includes 2 species found no further south than New England and 8 that occur no further north than the Carolinas and Blake Plateau. Comactinia meridionalis (Agassiz) is the only species commonly found in shallow water «50 m). No taxa are endemic to the area. (PDF file contains 34 pages.)

Marine flora and fauna of the eastern United States Mollusca: Cephalopoda

The cephalopods found in neritic waters of the northeastern United States include myopsid and oegopsid squids, sepiolid squids, and octopods. A key with diagnostic illustrations is provided to aid in identification of the eleven species common in the neritic waters between Cape Hatteras and Nova Scotia; included also is information on two oceanic species that occur over the continental shelf in this area and that can be confused with similar-looking neritic species. Other sections comprise a glossary of taxonomic characters used for identification of these species, an annotated systematic checklist, and checklists of the 89 other oceanic species and 18 Carolinian and subtropical neritic species that might occur occasionally off the northeastern United States. Marine flora and fauna of the northeastern United States. Echinodermata: Echinoidea

The echinoid fauna from littoral to abyssal depths off the northeastern United States (Cape Hatteras, NC, to northern Nova Scotia) comprises 31 species, in 26 genera and 19 families. An introduction to the external morphology, distribution, and natural history is given along with an illustrated key to the species, an annotated systematic list, and an index. The fauna Includes 17 species with wide-ranging distributions on continental slopes or abyssal plains. The remaining 14 species occur in shallower waters on the continental shelf or upper slope. Of these, eight are tropical in distribution with their northern range extending to the northeastern United States and three are mainly boreal with the northeastern United States at the southern limit of their range. Bacterial flora of the gut of the African snakehead, Channa obscura (Pisces: Channidae)

A qualitative and quantitative investigation of the bacterial flora of the gut of the African snakehead, Channa obscura was undertaken. The types of bacteria isolated from the different parts of the gut of C. obscura include Pseudomonas, Streptococcus, Citrobacter and Proteus. The coliform (Escherichia coli, Enterobacter) and some other Enterobacteriaceae such as Salmonella were also present. The stomach and intestine were found to have a preponderance of Pseudomonas and Vibrio species. Klebsiella sp. and Bacillus sp. (only in the pyloric caeca) were also isolated. On the whole, the correlation coefficients of the two incubation temperatures showed a high statistical significance. Thus the bacterial load of the gut of C. obscura has been shown as a function of temperature

Fabricación de una boya marina en biocomposite de fibra y resina naturales

En el presente TFG se ha construido una boya marina con fibras de lino y resina de origen natural. Para ello en el TFG se ha seguido el esquema para un estudio experimental dividido principalmente en tres puntos: Memoria ( Introducción, Estado del arte, Objetivos, Parte experimental, Conclusiones, Futuros estudios), Presupuesto (Fabricación del molde y de la boya) y Anexos (Fichas técnicas y de seguridad de los materiales). La idea de fabricar una boya marina en biocomposites surge de la diversidad de aplicaciones que estas tienen y como visión medioambiental, siendo esta una alternativa al uso de polimeros dependientes del petróleo. Para su construcción primero se ha fabricado un molde con fibra de vidrio, mediante el método de moldeo por contacto a mano, a partir de una boya de polietileno. Y sobre este molde, mediante el método de infusión, se ha fabricado la mitad de la boya marina con biocomposites.

Dinâmica populacional de Halodule wrightii Ascherson e sua fauna e flora associada em Cabo Frio RJ

Fanerógamas marinhas (gramas marinhas) são plantas com flores adaptadas ao ambiente marinho costeiro da maioria dos continentes do mundo. As gramas marinhas formam extensos bancos e proveem valiosos recursos em águas costeiras rasas em todo o mundo, servindo de alimento e berçário para espécies importantes de pescados comerciais e recreacionais. Nesse estudo foi realizada uma revisão sobre o estado de conhecimento das fanerógamas marinhas no Brasil até o presente momento; avaliou-se a importância do monitoramento em longo prazo e a influência de fatores ambientais, como o número de manchas solares; pesquisou-se também a distribuição espacial da grama marinha, bem como a fauna e flora associada; e o crescimento de Halodule wrightii em duas condições ambientais extremas (exposta no ciclo de maré baixa e permanentemente submersa). A revisão bibliográfica sobre as gramas marinhas foi abrangente e verificou a existência de algumas lacunas no conhecimento. Através do monitoramento a longo prazo pôde ser observado que o número de manchas solares tem forte relação negativa sobre a altura do dossel das gramas marinhas de região entre marés. A variação de marés na região de mediolitoral está relacionada diretamente com a distribuição espacial de Halodule wrightii e, consequentemente na distribuição da fauna e flora associada. A diferença de crescimento nos eixos de Halodule wrightii em condições ambientais diferentes é compensada pelas variações nas características de distribuição da planta no ambiente, tais como a altura do dossel, a densidade e biomassa de eixos. O monitoramento a longo prazo pode permitir a tomada de ações que auxiliem no manejo e na recuperação desses importantes habitats costeiros.

Statutory protection of freshwater flora and fauna

The aim of this paper is to summarize the present legislation aimed at protecting freshwater species in Britain, and briefly to review its effectiveness. Some areas have been deliberately omitted, such as fisheries legislation designed to conserve stocks, and the statutory protection of birds associated with fresh waters which forms a large subject area in its own right.

The new British Freshwater Algal Flora

This brief article provides some of the background to the publication of The Freshwater Algal Flora of the British Isles (John et al. 2002). This publication updates West and Fritsch's A Treatise on British Freshwater Algae (2nd edition) which was published in 1927. Taxonomic experts on the major freshwater algal groups were approached and almost all agreed to collaborate. The book which has taken more than 10 years to complete is illustrated with over 2000 line drawings and there are 20 half tone plates.

A representação dos atores sociais e a imagem da mulher no contexto do discurso feminista em contos de Marina Colasanti

O livro Contos de amor rasgados, de Marina Colasanti, foi publicado em 1986, década de consolidação das conquistas do movimento feminista (Pinto, 2003). O feminismo almejava uma mudança de mentalidade, mudança nas práticas sociais e nos discursos sobre a mulher (ibid.). Entretanto, a mulher nos contos é representada de forma peculiar, frustrando as expectativas de uma imagem positiva esperada de uma literatura produzida por uma autora feminista. Este estudo propõe a análise dos contos de Marina Colasanti, destacando algumas questões acerca da representação dos atores sociais em textos-contos que pretendem veicular um discurso de liberação da mulher. Para tanto, dez contos representativos do todo foram selecionados para compor o corpus e utilizou-se o sistema sociossemântico para a representação dos atores sociais proposto por van Leeuwen (1997) e a Linguística Sistêmico Funcional de Halliday (2004) como ferramentas de análise. Nosso enfoque é o da Análise Crítica do Discurso de Fairclough (1995), que tem dedicado seus estudos às mudanças sociais através dos discursos. Consideramos que o movimento feminista se inscreve em algumas mudanças. Nessa perspectiva, Bourdieu (2005) afirma que, apesar do movimento feminista, muito pouco mudou, prevalecendo, ainda, a dominação masculina e a violência simbólica. As categorias de van Leeuwen (op. cit.) da exclusão e inclusão dos atores sociais no discurso servem de instrumental para uma análise mais detalhada das relações homem-mulher, permitindo desvelar algumas questões feministas tematizadas nos contos, questões descritas por Pinto (op. cit.) e apontadas por Bourdieu (op. cit.). Os resultados da análise dos contos demonstram que a mulher ora está totalmente excluída, ora é representada como um pano de fundo (encobrimento), ora é enfraquecida (apassivada) em favor de seu marido/amante. Assim, os conflitos gerados a partir das ações do homem sobre a mulher nos contos confirmam certas preocupações do discurso feminista
