The objective of this trial was to document the total fatty acids in Murrah buffaloes milk on commercial farms in Brazil. Data from forty lactating Murrah-crossbred buffaloes were collected on five commercial farms located at Sarapui and Pilar do Sul, São Paulo-Brazil. A field survey was done from April to November 2002. In four farms, buffaloes were fed with wet brewers grains (primary concentrate). Only one farm (Farm 4) offered pasture and corn silage. Monthly milk samples were collected and stored at -20 degrees C until analyzed for fatty acid composition. The fatty acids with the highest percentage in total milk fat were C(16:0); C(18:1c9); C(18:0) and C(14:0). The average content observed in C(16:0) varied from 25.4 to 32.5%. Farm 4 (pasture plus corn silage) showed a higher C(16:0) value (32.5%). C(18:1c9) (varied) from 20.6 to 25.1%, C(14:0) varied from 5.9 to 8.9% and CLA content (C(18:2c9t11)) varied from 1.0 to 1.8%. Farm 3 presented higher average of C(18:1c9) (25.1%) and C(18:2c9t11) (1.8%), and lower average of C(14:0) (6.0%). Likewise, unsaturated fatty acids, C(18:1c9) and C(18:2c9t11) were higher on Farm 3. Probably, these results can be due to high CIA intakes derived from wet brewers grain and pasture. Long chain fatty acids varied from 34.2% (Farm 4) to 48.8% (Farm 3). In general, diets based on pasture and corn silage increased the levels of medium chain fatty acids in Murrah buffaloes milk.

This study was undertaken in a closed system with Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to examine the effects of total replacement of fish meal (FM) by soybean meal. Nile tilapia fingerlings with an average weight of 5.34+/-0.08 g were hand-fed one of the five isoenergetic (approximate to13.5 MJ digestible energy kg(-1)) and isoproteic (approximate to31% of digestible protein) experimental diets to satiation, six times a day during 85 days in eight replicate fibreglass tanks (six fish per tank). The control diet containing FM was substituted by soybean meal, with and without essential amino acids (lysine, methionine and threonine) or dicalcium phosphate supplementation. The supplemental amino acids were added at levels to simulate the reference amino acid profile of Nile tilapia carcass protein, based on the ideal protein concept. The results showed that soybean meal diet supplemented only with dicalcium phosphate was inferior to the control diet with FM and soybean meal diets supplemented with dicalcium phosphate and essential amino acids. Multiple essential amino acids and dicalcium phosphate incorporation in soybean meal diets was associated with performance, whole-body composition and carcass yield equal to that of the fish fed with the control diet containing FM. These data suggest that a diet with all plant protein source, supplemented with essential amino acids, based on tissue amino acid profile, can totally replace FM in a diet for Nile tilapia, without adverse effects on the growth performance, carcass yield and composition.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to characterize lychee seeds regarding their centesimal composition, and also to evaluate their antioxidant potential and fatty acid profile. Design/methodology/approach: To obtain the extract, dehydrated and grinded seeds were extracted with ethyl alcohol for 30 min, at a proportion of 1:3 of seeds:ethyl alcohol, under continuous agitation, at room temperature. Afterwards, the mixture was filtered and the supernatant subjected to a rotoevaporator at 40oC aiming to determine, by direct weighing, the extract dry matter yield. Findings: The largest found values went to the total carbohydrates (72.75 percent). In the oil from the lychee seeds there was a high percentage of unsaturated fatty acids, the main component being linoleic, considered an essential fatty acid. Research limitations/implications: Implies the identification of compounds biativos extracted from seeds of tropical and subtropical fruits, and to prevent certain types of diseases. Originality/value: The article tries to identify new source of phenolic compounds extracted from fruit. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to characterize oils extracted from Bertholletia excelsa, Lecythis pisonis, Dipteryx lacunifera, Carya illinoensis and Juglans regia, regarding their characterization and fatty acid profile. Design/methodology/approach: The oils were extracted from oilseeds by cold pressing and physico-chemical characterization was performed by using standard methods for oils and fats. The oxidative stability and fatty acid profile also were determined. Findings: According to the results, the physico-chemical properties of oils from nuts and walnuts were comparable to those of good quality conventional oils. The oil seeds are a good source of unsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic and linoleic acids. Research limitations/implications: Implies the identification of fatty acid profile and physico-chemical properties of oils extracted from nuts and walnuts, and to prevent certain types of diseases. Originality/value: The paper identifies a new source of essential fatty acids extracted from oilseeds. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

This paper aimed at evaluating fatty acids profile and the total alteration of lemon seeds extract added to soybean oil under thermoxidation, verifying the isolated and synergistic effect of these antioxidants. Therefore, Control treatments, LSE (2,400 mg/kg Lemon Seeds Extract), TBHQ (mg/kg), Mixture 1 (LSE + 50 mg/kg TBHQ) and Mixture 2 (LSE + 25 mg/kg TBHQ) were subjected to 180 C for 20 h. Samples were taken at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 h intervals and analyzed as for fatty acid profile and total polar compounds. Results were subjected to variance analyses and Tukey tests at a 5% significance level. An increase in the percentage of saturated fatty acids and mono-unsaturated, and decrease in polyunsaturated fatty acids was observed, regardless of the treatments studied. For total polar compounds, it was verified that Mixtures 1 and 2 presented values lower than 25% with 20 h of heating, not surpassing the limits established in many countries for disposal of oils and fats under high temperatures, thus proving the synergistic effect of antioxidants. © 2011 Association of Food Scientists & Technologists (India).

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da incorporação de óleo de palma sobre os níveis lipídicos séricos e a qualidade espermática de touros bubalinos. O trabalho foi desenvolvido na Embrapa Amazônia Oriental, com 12 touros bubalinos previamente selecionados, com idade média de 3,47 ± 0,92 anos e peso inicial de 456,8 ± 50,4 kg. Os touros foram confinados e divididos em dois grupos, de acordo com a raça, idade e a alimentação recebida. A alimentação (milho triturado, farelo de trigo e silagem de milho; proporção volumoso/concentrado de 50%) em cocho coletivo. O Grupo CONT recebeu dieta sem adição de óleo de palma e o Grupo ÓLEO recebeu dieta com adição de 2% de óleo de palma sobre a MS. Foram realizadas as análises bromatológica e de perfil de ácidos graxos dos alimentos. Foram investigados o perfil lipídico sérico, os aspectos físicos e morfológicos do sêmen in natura e as relações entre eles. A análise estatística contemplou a análise de variância (Anova), a comparação de médias pelo teste de Tukey, além das correlações de Pearson (P<0,05). O Grupo ÓLEO teve consumo 71,23% superior de ácidos graxos saturados e 55,40% superior de ácidos graxos insaturados em relação ao Grupo CONT. Efeitos significativos em relação aos grupos, para os parâmetros séricos, foram observados para triglicerídeos, colesterol, HDL e lipídeos totais, com valores maiores para o Grupo ÓLEO e, efeitos significativos em relação a período para colesterol, LDL, VLDL e lipídeos totais (P<0,05). Com relação aos parâmetros seminais, houve significativa redução em turbilhonamento e integridade de membrana plasmática, e redução da concentração seminal em função do período para o Grupo ÓLEO. Houve correlação significativa entre as variáveis: triglicerídeos e defeitos menores (r=-0.412; P=0,006), LDL e defeitos totais (r=-0,333; P=0,030), VLDL e viabilidade espermática (r=0,381; P=0,012), lipídeos totais e defeitos menores (r=-0.366; P= 0,017), e lipídeos totais e defeitos totais (r=-0,309; P= 0,046). Apesar de haver relação entre maiores níveis de lipídeos séricos e melhor morfologia espermática e do uso do óleo de palma não reduzir a qualidade do sêmen in natura a níveis abaixo dos fisiológicos, seu uso a 2% na dieta não favoreceu efetivamente os parâmetros relacionados com elevação da qualidade seminal e potencial fertilidade dos touros.
