We present a microscopic model for calculating the AC conductivity of a finite length line junction made up of two counter-or co-propagating single mode quantum Hall edges with possibly different filling fractions. The effect of density-density interactions and a local tunneling conductance (sigma) between the two edges is considered. Assuming that sigma is independent of the frequency omega, we derive expressions for the AC conductivity as a function of omega, the length of the line junction and other parameters of the system. We reproduce the results of Sen and Agarwal (2008 Phys. Rev. B 78 085430) in the DC limit (omega -> 0), and generalize those results for an interacting system. As a function of omega, the AC conductivity shows significant oscillations if sigma is small; the oscillations become less prominent as sigma increases. A renormalization group analysis shows that the system may be in a metallic or an insulating phase depending on the strength of the interactions. We discuss the experimental implications of this for the behavior of the AC conductivity at low temperatures.

After briefly reviewing the theory and instrumentation, results from a variety of experiments carried out by the authors on the photoacoustic spectroscopy of solids and surfaces by employing an indigenous spectrometer are discussed in the light of the recent literature. Some of the important findings discussed are, phase angle spectroscopy, anomalous behaviour of monolayers, unusual frequency dependence in small cell volumes, spectra of a variety of solids including amorphous arsenic chalcogenides, photoacoustic detection of phase transitions and determination of surface areas and surface acidities of oxides. Recent developments such as piezoelectric photoacoustic spectroscopy, depth profiling and subsurface imaging are also presented.

The variation of electrical resistivity of an insulator-conductor composite, namely, wax-graphite composite, with parameters such as volume fraction, grain size, and temperature has been studied. A model is proposed to explain the observed variations, which assumes that the texture of the composite consists of insulator granules coated with conducting particles. The resistivity of these materials is controlled mainly by the contact resistance between the conducting particles and the number of contacts each particle has with its neighbors. The variation of resistivity with temperature has also been explained with the help of this model and it is attributed to the change in contact area. Supercritical processes are gaining importance in the last few years in the food, environmental and pharmaceutical product processing. The design of any supercritical process needs accurate experimental data on solubilities of solids in the supercritical fluids (SCFs). The empirical equations are quite successful in correlating the solubilities of solid compounds in SCF both in the presence and absence of cosolvents. In this work, existing solvate complex models are discussed and a new set of empirical equations is proposed. These equations correlate the solubilities of solids in supercritical carbon dioxide (both in the presence and absence of cosolvents) as a function of temperature, density of supercritical carbon dioxide and the mole fraction of cosolvent. The accuracy of the proposed models was evaluated by correlating 15 binary and 18 ternary systems. The proposed models provided the best overall correlations. (C) 2009 Elsevier BA/. Using the treatment of Smith et al., charge distribution in and consequently the dipole moments of several aliphatic acids have been evaluated. The electric moments of chloro (2·86 D), bromo (2·90 D), iodo (2·06 D) and trichloro (3·00 D) acetic acids have been measured in dioxan solution at 35°. The experimental values are compared with those calculated theoretically and discussed in terms of the various possible structures.

Ionic conductivity and other physico-chemical properties of a soft matter composite electrolyte comprising of a polymer-sodium salt complex and a non-ionic plastic crystal are discussed here. The electrolyte under discussion comprises of polyethyleneoxide (PEO)-sodium triflate (NaCF3SO3) and succinonitrile (SN). Addition of SN to PEO-NaCF3SO3 resulted in significant enhancement in ionic conductivity. At 50% SN concentration (with respect to weight of polymer), the polymer-plastic composite electrolyte room temperature (= 25 degrees C) ionic conductivity was similar to 1.1 x 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1), approximately 45 times higher than PEO-NaCF3SO3. Observations from ac-impedance spectroscopy along with X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform inrared spectroscopy strongly suggest the enhancement in the composite is ionicconductivity due to enhanced ion mobility via decrease in crystallinity of PEO. The free standing composite polymer-plastic electrolytes were more compliable than PEO-NaCF3SO3 thus exhibiting no detrimental effects of succinonitrile addition on the mechanical stability of PEO-NaCF3SO3. We propose that the exploratory PEO-NaCF3SO3-SN system.discussed here will eventually be developed as a prototype electrolyte.for sodium-sulfur batteries capable of operating at ambient and.sub-ambient conditions. The compound Bi3W2O10.5 was synthesized by the solid-state technique from Bi2O3 and WO3 in stoichiometric quantities. Single crystals were grown by the melt-cooling technique and the crystal structure was solved in the tetragonal 141in space group with a = 3.839 (1) A, c = 16-3S2 (5) A, V = 241.4 (1) angstrom(3), Z = 4 and was refined to an R index of 0.0672. The structure represents a modification of the Aurivillius phase and consists of [Bi2O2](2+) units separated by WO8 polyhedra. a.c. impedance studies indicate oxide ion conductivity of 2.91 10(-5) cm(-1) at 600 degrees C.

A contactless method to determine the electrical conductivity of nanoparticles is presented. It is based on the lineshape analysis of electron magnetic resonance signals which are `Dysonian' for conducting samples of sizes larger than the skin depth. The method is validated bymeasurements on a bulk sample of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 where it gives values close to those obtained from direct measurement of conductivity and is then used to determine the conductivity of nanoparticles of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol as a function of temperature. Only a small amount (<= 3.5 mol%) of Ge can be doped in Ga2O3, Ga1.4In0.6O3 and In2O3 by means of solid state reactions at 1400 degrees C. All these samples are optically transparent in the visible range, but Ge-doped Ga2O3 and Ga1.4In0.6O3 are insulating. Only Ge-doped In2O3 exhibits a significant decrease in resistivity, the resistivity decreasing further on thermal quenching and H-2 reduction. The resistivity of 2.7% Ge-doped In2O3 after H-2 reduction shows a metallic behavior, and a resistivity of similar to 1 m Omega cm at room temperature, comparable to that of Sn-doped In2O3. A.C. electrical conductivity of potassium perchlorate (KP) has been measured in the temperature range 25325°C at frequencies ranging from 50500 Hz using an automated technique. The results are interpreted in terms of a novel mechanism involving Schottky defects in the anion sublattice and Frenkel defects in the cation sublattice. Theconductivity behavior of KP is compared with literature data on similar low-symmetry systems containing polyatomic ions.

Thermal conductivities of glasses at low temperatures show strikingly similar behavior irrespective of their chemical composition. While for T<1 K the thermal conductivity can be understood in the phenomenological tunneling model; the ‘‘universal plateau’’ in the temperature interval 15>T>2 K is totally unexplained. While Rayleigh scattering of phonons by structural disorder should be the natural cause for limiting the mean free path of phonons in this temperature range, it has been concluded before that in glasses a strong enough source of such scattering does not exist. In this study we show by a proper structural analysis in at least one material (namely, silica) that a strong enough source of Rayleigh scattering of phonons in glasses does exist so that the ‘‘universal plateau’’ can be explained without invoking any new mechanism. This may be for the first time that the low-temperature property of a structural glass has been correlated to its structure.

The protonic conductivity of ammonium ferrocyanide hydrate has been studied by the complex admittance method. The admittance plots show departures from ideal Debye behaviour. The values of ionic conductivity (sigma = 3.7 X 10(-5) (OMEGA-cm)-1) and diffusion coefficient (D = 3.8 X 10(-10) cm2/s) obtained at room temperature are consistent with the corresponding values estimated by an earlier NMR study.

The dc electrical conductivity of TlInX2 (X = Se, Te) single crystals, parallel and perpendicular to the (001) c-axis is studied under high quasi-hydrostatic pressure up to 7.0 GPa, at room temperature. Conductivity measurements parallel to the c-axis are carried out at high pressures and down to liquid nitrogen temperatures. These materials show continuous metallization under pressure. Both compounds have almost the same pressure coefficient of the electrical activation energy parallel to the c-axis, d(ΔE∥)/dP = −2.9 × 10−10 eV/Pa, which results from the narrowing of the band gap under pressure. The results are discussed in the light of the band structure of these compounds.
