Infection is a major clinical problem associated with the use of intravenous catheters. The efficacy of a direct electric current (10µA, 9V) via electrode-conducting carbon impregnated catheters to prevent colonisation of catheters by micro-organisms was investigated. The range of organisms susceptible to 10µA was determined by a zone of inhibition test. The catheters acting as the anode and the cathode were inserted into a nutrient agar plate inoculated with a lawn of bacteria. There was no zone of inhibition observed around the anode. Organisms susceptible to 10µA at the cathode were Staphylococcus aureus (2 strains), Staphylococcus epidermidis (5 strains), Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae (2 strains each), and one strain of the following micro-organisms: Staphylococcus hominis, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. The zones ranged from 6 to 16 mm in diameter according to the organisms under test. The zone size was proportional to the amperage (10 - 100 µA) and the number of organisms on the plate. Ten µA did not prevent adhesion of staphylococci to the cathode nor did it affect their growth in nutrient broth. However, it was bactericidal to adherent bacteria on the cathodal catheter and significantly reduced the number of bacteria on the catheter after 4 to 24 h application of electricity. The antimicrobial activity of low amperage electric current under anaerobic conditions and in the absence of chloride ions against bacteria attached to the surface of a current carrying electrode was also investigated. The mechanisms of the bactericidal activity associated with the cathode were investigated with S. epidermidis and S. aureus. The inhibition zone was greatly reduced in the presence of catalase. There was no zone around the cathode when the test was carried out under anaerobic conditions. Hydrogen peroxide was produced at the cathode surface under aerobic conditions, but not in the absence of oxygen. A salt-bridge apparatus was used to demonstrate further that hydrogen peroxide was produced at the cathode, and chlorine at the anode. The antimicrobial activity of low amperage electric current under anaerobic conditions and in the absence of chloride ions against bacteria attached to the surface of a current carrying electrode was also investigated. Antibacterial activity was reduced under anaerobic conditions, which is compatible with the role of hydrogen peroxide as a primary bactericidal agent of electricity associated with the cathode. A reduction in chloride ions did not significantly reduce the antibacterial activity suggesting chlorine plays only a minor role in the bactericidal activity against organisms attached to anodal electrode surfaces. The bactericidal activity of electric current associated with the cathode and H202 was greatly reduced in the presence of 50 μM to 0.5 mM magnesium ions in the test menstrum. Ten μA applied via the catheters did not prevent the initial biofilm growth by the adherent bacteria but reduced the number of bacteria in the biofilm by 2 log order aiter 24 h. The results suggested that 10 μA may prevent the colonisation of catheters by both the extra~ and intra-luminal routes. The localised production of hydrogen peroxide and chlorine and the intrinsic activity due to electric current may offer a useful method for the eradication of bacteria from catheter surfaces.

Background: Electrosurgery units are widely employed in modern surgery. Advances in technology have enhanced the safety of these devices, nevertheless, accidental burns are still regularly reported. This study focuses on possible causes of sacral burns as complication of the use of electrosurgery. Burns are caused by local densifications of the current, but the actual pathway of current within patient's body is unknown. Numerical electromagnetic analysis can help in understanding the issue. Methods: To this aim, an accurate heterogeneous model of human body (including seventy-seven different tissues), electrosurgery electrodes, operating table and mattress was build to resemble a typical surgery condition. The patient lays supine on the mattress with the active electrode placed onto the thorax and the return electrode on his back. Common operating frequencies of electrosurgery units were considered. Finite Difference Time Domain electromagnetic analysis was carried out to compute the spatial distribution of current density within the patient's body. A differential analysis by changing the electrical properties of the operating table from a conductor to an insulator was also performed. Results: Results revealed that distributed capacitive coupling between patient body and the conductive operating table offers an alternative path to the electrosurgery current. The patient's anatomy, the positioning and the different electromagnetic properties of tissues promote a densification of the current at the head and sacral region. In particular, high values of current density were located behind the sacral bone and beneath the skin. This did not occur in the case of non-conductive operating table. Conclusion: Results of the simulation highlight the role played from capacitive couplings between the return electrode and the conductive operating table. The concentration of current density may result in an undesired rise in temperature, originating burns in body region far from the electrodes. This outcome is concordant with the type of surgery-related sacral burns reported in literature. Such burns cannot be immediately detected after surgery, but appear later and can be confused with bedsores. In addition, the dosimetric analysis suggests that reducing the capacity coupling between the return electrode and the operating table can decrease or avoid this problem. © 2013 Bifulco et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

The temperature and stress field in a thin plate with collinear cracks interrupting an electric current field are determined. This is accomplished by using a complex function method that allows a direct means of finding the distribution of the electric current, the temperature and stress field. Temperature dependency for the heat-transfer coefficient, coefficient of linear expansion and the elastic modulus are considered. As an example, temperature distribution is calculated for an alloy (No. GH2132) plate with two collinear cracks under high temperature. Relationships between the stress, temperature, electric density and crack length are obtained. Crack trajectories emanating from existing crack are predicted by application of the strain energy density criterion which can also be used for finding the load carrying capacity of the cracked plate. A novel numerical technique is proposed to model thermal plasma of microseconds/milliseconds time-scale effect. Modelling thermal plasma due to lightning strike will allow the estimation of electric current density, plasma pressure, and heat flux at the surface of the aircraft structure. These input data can then be used for better estimation of the mechanical/thermal induced damage on the aircraft structures for better protection systems design. Thermal plasma generated during laser cutting, electric (laser) welding and other plasma processing techniques have been the focus of many researchers. Thermal plasma is a gaseous state that consists from a mixture of electrons, ions, and natural particles. Thermal plasma can be assumed to be in local thermodynamic equilibrium, which means the electrons and the heavy species have equal temperature. Different numerical techniques have been developed using a coupled Navier Stokes – Heat transfer – Electromagnetic equations based on the assumption that the thermal plasma is a single laminar gas flow. These previous efforts focused on generating thermal plasma of time-scale in the range of seconds. Lighting strike on aircraft structures generates thermal plasma of time-scale of milliseconds/microseconds, which makes the previous physics used not applicable. The difficulty comes from the Navier-Stokes equations as the fluid is simulated under shock load, this introducing significant changes in the density and temperature of the fluid.

Layer clouds are globally extensive. Their lower edges are charged negatively by the fair weather atmospheric electricity current flowing vertically through them. Using polar winter surface meteorological data from Sodankyla ̈ (Finland) and Halley (Antarctica), we find that when meteorological diurnal variations are weak, an appreciable diurnal cycle, on average, persists in the cloud base heights, detected using a laser ceilometer. The diurnal cloud base heights from both sites correlate more closely with the Carnegie curve of global atmospheric electricity than with local meteorological measurements. The cloud base sensitivities are indistinguishable between the northern and southern hemispheres, averaging a (4.0 ± 0.5) m rise for a 1% change in the fair weather electric current density. This suggests that the global fair weather current, which is affected by space weather, cosmic rays and the El Nin ̃o Southern Oscillation, is linked with layer cloud properties.

Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS) are periodic structures in one or two dimensions that act as spatial filters, can be formed by elements of type conductors patches or apertures, functioning as filters band-stop or band-pass respectively. The interest in the study of FSS has grown through the years, because such structures meet specific requirements as low-cost, reduced dimensions and weighs, beyond the possibility to integrate with other microwave circuits. The most varied applications for such structures have been investigated, as for example, radomes, antennas systems for airplanes, electromagnetic filters for reflective antennas, absorbers structures, etc. Several methods have been used for the analysis of FSS, among them, the Wave Method (WCIP). Are various shapes of elements that can be used in FSS, as for example, fractal type, which presents a relative geometric complexity. This work has as main objective to propose a simplification geometric procedure a fractal FSS, from the analysis of influence of details (gaps) of geometry of the same in behavior of the resonance frequency. Complementarily is shown a simple method to adjust the frequency resonance through analysis of a FSS, which uses a square basic cell, in which are inserted two reentrance and dimensions these reentrance are varied, making it possible to adjust the frequency. For this, the structures are analyzed numerically, using WCIP, and later are characterized experimentally comparing the results obtained. For the two cases is evaluated, the influence of electric and magnetic fields, the latter through the electric current density vector. Is realized a bibliographic study about the theme and are presented suggestions for the continuation of this work

(La0.667Ca0.333Mn1-xMO3-delta)-O-x (M = Mg, Li or Re) exhibit insulating behaviour and nonlinear current-voltage (J-E) relationship with voltage-limiting characteristics at temperatures below the ferromagnetic transition (T-c). The high current region is set in at field strengths <60 V/cm. Nonlinearity exponent, alpha in the relation J = kE(alpha) increases inversely with temperature. In presence of an external magnetic field, the J-E curves show higher current density at lower field strengths. Microstructural studies indicate that there is no segregation of secondary phases in the grain boundary regions. There is remarkable changes in p(T) as well as J-E curves with the grain size. Annealing studies in lower p(O2) atmospheres indicate that there is significant out-diffusion of oxygen ions through the grain boundary layer (GBL) regions creating oxygen vacancies in the GBL regions. The concentration of Mn4+ ions is lowered at the GBL due to oxygen vacancies, reducing the probability of hopping and resulting in insulating behaviour. Therefore an insulating barrier is introduced between two conducting grains and the carrier motion between the grains is inhibited. Thus below T-c, where sufficient increase in resistivity is observed the conduction may be arising as a result of spin dependent tunneling across the barrier. External electric field lowers the barrier height and establishes carrier transport across the barrier. Above certain field strength, barrier height diminishes significantly and thereby allowing large number of carriers for conduction, giving rise to highly nonlinear conductivity. Titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) films have been deposited on glass and p-silicon (1 0 0) substrates by DC magnetron sputtering technique to investigate their structural, electrical and optical properties. The surface composition of the TiO(2) films has been analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The TiO(2) films formed on unbiased substrates were amorphous. Application of negative bias voltage to the substrate transformed the amorphous TiO(2) into polycrystalline as confirmed by Raman spectroscopic studies. Thin film capacitors with configuration of Al/TiO(2)/p-Si have been fabricated. The leakage current density of unbiased films was 1 x10(-6) A/cm(2) at a gate bias voltage of 1.5 V and it was decreased to 1.41 x 10(-7) A/cm(2) with the increase of substrate bias voltage to -150 V owing to the increase in thickness of interfacial layer of SiO(2). Dielectric properties and AC electrical conductivity of the films were studied at various frequencies for unbiased and biased at -150 V. The capacitance at 1 MHz for unbiased films was 2.42 x 10(-10) F and it increased to 5.8 x 10(-10) F in the films formed at substrate bias voltage of -150 V. Dielectric constant of TiO(2) films were calculated from capacitance-voltage measurements at 1 MHz frequency. The dielectric constant of unbiased films was 6.2 while those formed at -150 V it increased to 19. The optical band gap of the films decreased from 3.50 to 3.42 eV with the increase of substrate bias voltage from 0 to -150 V. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Barium zirconium titanate [Ba(Zr0.05Ti0.95)O3, BZT] thin films were prepared by pulsed laser ablation technique and dc leakage current conduction behavior was extensively studied. The dc leakage behavior study is essential, as it leads to degradation of the data storage devices. The current-voltage (I-V) of the thin films showed an Ohmic behavior for the electric field strength lower than 7.5 MV/m. Nonlinearity in the current density-voltage (J-V) behavior has been observed at an electric field above 7.5 MV/m. Different conduction mechanisms have been thought to be responsible for the overall I-V characteristics of BZT thin films. The J-V behavior of BZT thin films was found to follow Lampert’s theory of space charge limited conduction similar to what is observed in an insulator with charge trapping moiety. The Ohmic and trap filled limited regions have been explicitly observed in the J-V curves, where the saturation prevailed after a voltage of 6.5 V referring the onset of a trap-free square region. Two different activation energy values of 1.155 and 0.325 eV corresponding to two different regions have been observed in the Arrhenius plot, which was attributed to two different types of trap levels present in the film, namely, deep and shallow traps.
