The self-diffusion coefficients for water in a series of copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, HEMA, and tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate, THFMA, swollen with water to their equilibrium states have been studied at 310 K using PFG-NMR. The self-diffusion coefficients calculated from the Stejskal-Tanner equation, D-obs, for all of the hydrated polymers were found to be dependent on the NMR storage time, as a result of spin exchange between the proton reservoirs of the water and the polymers, reaching an equilibrium plateau value at long storage times. The true values of the diffusion coefficients were calculated from the values of D-obs, in the plateau regions by applying a correction for the fraction of water protons present, obtained from the equilibrium water contents of the gels. The true self-diffusion coefficient for water in polyHEMA obtained at 310 K by this method was 5.5 x 10(-10) m(2) s(-1). For the copolymers containing 20% HEMA or more a single value of the self-diffusion coefficient was found, which was somewhat larger than the corresponding values obtained for the macroscopic diffusion coefficient from sorption measurements. For polyTHFMA and copolymers containing less than 20% HEMA, the PFG-NMR stimulated echo attenuation decay curves and the log-attenuation plots were characteristic of the presence of two diffusing water species. The self-diffusion coefficients of water in the equilibrium-hydrated copolymers were found to be dependent on the copolymer composition, decreasing with increasing THFMA content.

In 2003 The Australian Journal of Indigenous Education celebrates its 30th anniversary. Beginning in 1973 as The Aboriginal Child at School, the journal was a practical response to a recommendation made at the National Workshop on Aboriginal Education held in May 1971 “that a periodical publication be commenced to provide a medium for the exchange of ideas and developments in the teaching of Aborigines, for the examination of practical implications of research findings and for the recording of Aboriginal achievements” (Watts, 1973, p. 2). Funded by the Department of Aboriginal Affairs in Canberra and housed in the Department of Education and later the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at the University of Queensland, The Aboriginal Child at School was published at two monthly intervals. It aimed to provide a medium whereby teachers in the field of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education could share their thinking and their strategies for successful teaching and thereby enter into a meaningful and productive dialogue with one another (Watts, 1973, p. 2). An overarching concern of the journal was to improve and optimise children’s development and the types of pedagogies employed to provide challenging and rewarding learning experiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.The journal was enthusiastically embraced by a broad range of professionals and proved to be a useful resource for both experienced and beginning teachers, particularly in the primary sector.

Minimally invasive cardiovascular interventions guided by multiple imaging modalities are rapidly gaining clinical acceptance for the treatment of several cardiovascular diseases. These images are typically fused with richly detailed pre-operative scans through registration techniques, enhancing the intra-operative clinical data and easing the image-guided procedures. Nonetheless, rigid models have been used to align the different modalities, not taking into account the anatomical variations of the cardiac muscle throughout the cardiac cycle. In the current study, we present a novel strategy to compensate the beat-to-beat physiological adaptation of the myocardium. Hereto, we intend to prove that a complete myocardial motion field can be quickly recovered from the displacement field at the myocardial boundaries, therefore being an efficient strategy to locally deform the cardiac muscle. We address this hypothesis by comparing three different strategies to recover a dense myocardial motion field from a sparse one, namely, a diffusion-based approach, thin-plate splines, and multiquadric radial basis functions. Two experimental setups were used to validate the proposed strategy. First, an in silico validation was carried out on synthetic motion fields obtained from two realistic simulated ultrasound sequences. Then, 45 mid-ventricular 2D sequences of cine magnetic resonance imaging were processed to further evaluate the different approaches. The results showed that accurate boundary tracking combined with dense myocardial recovery via interpolation/ diffusion is a potentially viable solution to speed up dense myocardial motion field estimation and, consequently, to deform/compensate the myocardial wall throughout the cardiac cycle. The Portuguese Energy Policy considers the development of a commercially viable and competitive market for energy performance contracting (EPC) as a main mechanism to achieve the objectives of energy efficiency improvement. This paper proposes a study to investigate how to achieve widespread adoption of energy performance contracting by means of system dynamics modelling and simulation. To explore and gather insights on this question, a system dynamics model representing the system of the Portuguese EPC market at industry level will be created. The simulation of that model will provide a helpful basis for analysing and explaining the development of key variables, and accelerating learning on the managerial, organizational and political adaptation processes that foster the diffusion of EPC adoption. The first phase of this research project aims at identifying and analysing the key factors and critical cause-effect relations that drive the adoption of EPC. With this purpose, a qualitative content analysis on relevant documents was performed and a set of interviews was conducted. That data was analysed to capture the critical variables and its interrelation to formulate a preliminary representation of the system structure as stock and flow diagrams.

Tempo fértil em alterações que transformaram a face do universo editorial em Portugal e no Brasil, os anos que decorrem entre a última metade da década de 1930 e o fim da década de 1960 constituem o período em que se assiste a uma inversão nos processos de influência tipográfica entre os dois países, com Portugal a passar de exportador para importador de livros no seu comércio com o Brasil. Este artigo pretende analisar o ponto de vista da edição portuguesa nos modos variados como os seus agentes foram representando o Brasil enquanto centro produtor e disseminador do livro, e como as mudanças suscitadas foram ocorrendo num contexto de oscilação – e tensão – entre discursos amarrados a uma época de ouro (ou imaginada como tal) que ficava relutantemente para trás e práticas de colaboração efectiva entre os universos tipográficos português e brasileiro, essencialmente suportadas na actuação de editores individuais. ABSTRACT - There was a time of many alterations that changed the face of the publishing world in Portugal and Brazil during the years spanning from the second half of the 1930’s to the end of the 1960’s. This was a period in which one could observe an inversion of publishing influences between the two countries, with Portugal shifting its role and becoming a net book importer in its trade with Brazil. This article intends to analyze the Portuguese publishing world’s point of view as their agents in different ways changed their attitudes toward Brazil as a centre of book production and diffusion. The text also sets out to understand how these transformations occurred in a context of oscillation – and tension – among discourses tied to a golden age (or imagined as such) that was reluctantly left behind, and practices of effective collaboration between the Portuguese and Brazilian publishing worlds – resulting fundamentally from the actions of individual publishers.

Em 29 de Outubro de 1885 era publicado o primeiro número d’O Recreio, Publicação Semanal, Litteraria e Charadistica, criado e dirigido por Ignacio Moreira. No número 26, de 9 de Agosto de 1886, na primeira página, sob o título “Expediente”, dá-se conta aos leitores e aos colaboradores que “d’este numero em deante toda a correspondencia deve ser dirigida a João Romano Torres, rua Nova de S. Mamede, aos Caldas, 26, 3.º - Lisboa” (p. 201). Para João Romano Torres, que acabara de adquirir a publicação, trata-se de um acto refundacional, que significará para o editor o início de um percurso editorial através do qual se dará origem a uma editora cuja actividade chegará ao último quartel do século seguinte, estabelecendo um catálogo que a tornou reconhecível e reconhecida no espaço do livro em Portugal. Desta editora se falará aqui apenas de um período situado entre o ano de 1885 e o fim da primeira década de 1900. ABSTRACT - On the 29th October 1885, the first issue of O Recreio, Publicação Semanal, Litteraria e Charadística (proposed English translation: The Playground, Weekly, Literary and Charades Publication) was published, created and headed by Ignacio Moreira. On the 26th issue, issued on the 9th August 1886, in the front page, under the headline “Dispatch”, it is imparted with readers and collaborators that “from this issue forward, all correspondence should be addressed to João Romano Torres, Nova de S. Mamede street, at Caldas, 26, 3rd - Lisbon” (p. 201). For João Romano Torres, who had just acquired the publication, this was a re-foundational act, which will represent for this publisher the beginning of a publishing trajectory through which a new publishing house will emerge, whose activity will reach the final quarter of the next century, establishing a catalogue which made it recognizable and recognized in the book field in Portugal. This publishing house will be addressed here regarding only the period spanning from the year 1885 to the end of the first decade of the 1900s.

In 2012 we were awarded an Erasmus Intensive Programme grant to facilitate OPTIMAX 2013, a three week duration residential summer school held within the UK during August 2013. The summer school helped to further develop student radiographer skills in optimising x-radiation dose and image quality. With a major emphasis on visual techniques to determine image quality, lesion visibility, lesion detection performance and physical measures of image quality (eg signal to noise ratio (SNR)) we conducted controlled laboratory experiments on phantoms using Computed Radiography, CT and Full Field Digital Mammography. Mathematical modelling was used for radiation dose estimation. Sixty seven people from 5 European countries participated. This included 49 PhD, MSc and BSc students. Discipline areas included radiography, physics, biomedical science and nuclear medicine.

E. coli was submitted to a 5G electromagnetic field generated by a alternate 60 Hz voltage source. The differences on growth and glucose consume in control and exposed groups were evaluated using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U-test. There was a significant difference in glucose consume and growth in E. coli after 8 hours of exposition to electromagnetic field. It can be concluded that electromagnetic field had a positive effect in consume of glucose and growth of E. coli. The cause of these results can be explained by an increasing of glucose entrance through membrane due to the stimulated transport system via Facility Diffusion or cyclotron resonance. The growth can be caused by shortening of lag phase and excitement of log phase.

The study of chemical diffusion in biological tissues is a research field of high importance and with application in many clinical, research and industrial areas. The evaluation of diffusion and viscosity properties of chemicals in tissues is necessary to characterize treatments or inclusion of preservatives in tissues or organs for low temperature conservation. Recently, we have demonstrated experimentally that the diffusion properties and dynamic viscosity of sugars and alcohols can be evaluated from optical measurements. Our studies were performed in skeletal muscle, but our results have revealed that the same methodology can be used with other tissues and different chemicals. Considering the significant number of studies that can be made with this method, it becomes necessary to turn data processing and calculation easier. With this objective, we have developed a software application that integrates all processing and calculations, turning the researcher work easier and faster. Using the same experimental data that previously was used to estimate the diffusion and viscosity of glucose in skeletal muscle, we have repeated the calculations with the new application. Comparing between the results obtained with the new application and with previous independent routines we have demonstrated great similarity and consequently validated the application. This new tool is now available to be used in similar research to obtain the diffusion properties of other chemicals in different tissues or organs.
