The adsorption of an electroinactive product greatly influences an irreversible electrochemical reaction in three ways, including self-block, self-inhibition, and self-acceleration, and changes not only the heterogeneous electron-transfer rate constant but also the modified formal potential and electron-transfer coefficient of the electrochemical reaction. In order to study these adsorption effects, a double logarithmic method was suggested to be used in processing the potential-controlled thin layer spectroelectrochemical data. The result shows three types of double logarithmic plots for three kinds of adsorption effects. These double logarithmic plots can be a diagnostic criterion of the adsorption effects and enable us to determine some thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. The combination of nonlinear regression with double logarithmic method is a convenient way to examine the suggested mechanism and to extract more information from the limited experimental data. Some examples are given to test the theoretical results. (C) 1999 The Electrochemical Society. S0013-4651(98)05-012-5. All rights reserved.

A simple double logarithmic method in potential-controlled thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry for an irreversible electrochemical process has been studied by numerical analysis and examined by experimental examples. This simple algorithm has a novel function offering some important information about the mechanism of a complex electrochemical process directly from a limited amount of potential-spectrum data, and can be used to distinguish different reaction mechanisms such as E, EC, EE, as well as to determine the electron-transfer coefficient, a, and the kinetically modified E-0'. Combination of the double logarithmic method with nonlinear regression provides a powerful tool to examine the proposed mechanism and also to estimate other thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. This paper introduces a new method to estimate the diffusion coefficient and transference number of a salt or an electroactive ion in a solution with little or no supporting electrolyte. The above two parameters can be obtained from a single potential step experiment without previous knowledge of either one. It would appear that the method could also be used in the study of ion transport in a high viscosity solvent or a solid electrolyte. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
Probing Bias-Dependent Electrochemical Gas-Solid Reactions in (LaxSr1-x)CoO3-delta Cathode Materials
Resumo:
Spatial variability of bias-dependent electrochemical processes on a (La0.5Sr0.5)(2)CoO4 +/- modified (LaxSr1-x)CoO3- surface is studied using first-order reversal curve method in electrochemical strain microscopy (ESM). The oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) is activated at voltages as low as 3-4 V with respect to bottom electrode. The degree of bias-induced transformation as quantified by ESM hysteresis loop area increases with applied bias. The variability of electrochemical activity is explored using correlation analysis and the ORR/OER is shown to be activated in grains at relatively low biases, but the final reaction rate is relatively small. At the same time, at grain boundaries, the onset of reaction process corresponds to larger voltages, but limiting reactivity is much higher. The reaction mechanism in ESM of mixed electronic-ionic conductor is further analyzed. These studies both establish the framework for probing bias-dependent electrochemical processes in solids and demonstrate rich spectrum of electrochemical transformations underpinning catalytic activity in cobaltites.

A new electrochemical methodology has been developed for the detection of ozone using multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The method presented here is based on the reaction of ozone with indigo blue dye producing anthranilic acid (ATN). The electrochemical profile of ATN on an electrode of glassy carbon (GC) modified with MWCNT showed an oxidation peak potential at 750 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. An analytical method was developed using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) to determine ATN in a range of 50-400 nmol L(-1), with a detection limit of 9.7 nmol L(-1). Ozonated water samples were successfully analyzed by GC/MWCNT electrode and the recovery procedure yielded values between of 96.5 and 102.3%.

Electrochemical decolourisation of Reactive Orange 16 was carried out in an electrochemical flow-cell, using as working electrodes a Pt thin film deposited on a Ti substrate (Pt/Ti) prepared by the Pechini method and a pure platinum (Pt) foil. Using the Pt/Ti electrodes better results for dye decolourisation were obtained under milder conditions than those used for pure Pt. For the Pt electrode, colour removal of 93 % (lambda = 493 nm) was obtained after 60 min, at 2.2 V vs. RHE, using 0.017 mol L(-1) NaCl + 0.5 mol L(-1) H(2)SO(4) solution. For the Pt/Ti electrode there was better colour removal, 98%, than for the Pt electrode. Moreover, we used 0.017 mol L(-1) NaCl solution and the applied potential was 1.8 V. Under this condition after 15 min of electrolysis, more than 80% of colour was removed. The rate reaction constant, assuming a first order reaction, was 0.024 min(-1) and 0.069 min(-1), for Pt and Pt/Ti electrodes, respectively.

A quantitative phase analysis was made of LiXCoO2 powders obtained by two distinct chemical methodologies at different temperatures (from 400 to 700degreesC). A phase analysis was made using Rietveld refinements based on X-ray diffraction data, considering the LiXCoO2 powders as a multiphase system that simultaneously contained two main phases with distinct, layered and spinel-type structures. The sults showed the coexistence of both structures in LiXCoO2 obtained at low temperature (400 and 500degreesC), although only the layered structure was detected at higher temperatures (600 and 700degreesC, regardless of the chemical powder process employed. The electrochemical performance, evaluated mainly by the cycling reversibility of LiXCoO2 in the form of cathode insertion electrodes, revealed that there is a close correlation between structural features and the electrochemical response, with one of the redox processes (3.3 v/3.9 v) associated only with the presence of the spinel-type structure. A novel polymer/TiC nanocomposites “PPA/TiC, poly(PA-co-ANI)/TiC and PANI/TiC” was successfully synthesized by chemical oxidation polymerization at room temperature using p-anisidine and/or aniline monomers and titanium carbide (TiC) in the presence of hydrochloric acid as a dopant with ammonium persulfate as oxidant. These nanocomposites obtained were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). XRD indicated the presence of interactions between polymers and TiC nanoparticle and the TGA revealed that the TiC nanoparticles improve the thermal stability of the polymers. The electrical conductivity of nanocomposites is in the range of 0.079–0.91 S cm−1. The electrochemical behavior of the polymers extracted from the nanocomposites has been analyzed by cyclic voltammetry. Good electrochemical response has been observed for polymer films; the observed redox processes indicate that the polymerisation on TiC nanoparticles produces electroactive polymers. These nanocomposite microspheres can potentially used in commercial applications as fillers for antistatic and anticorrosion coatings.
