Her reproduction of his work, together with an English translation and very detailed studies of his individual poems have the combined effect of rescuing an interesting poet from near-total oblivion. This, in my opinion, is the finest thing a neo-Latin scholar can do, and Haan accomplishes her task with the same skill, sensitivity, and eloquence that have distinguished her studies of other neo-Latin poets of this period (Joseph Addison and Vincent Bourne). Dramatic liquid-phase dehydrogenation rate enhancements using gas-phase hydrogen acceptors

The dehydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole (THCZ) to form carbazole (CZ) over supported palladium catalysts was examined in the presence of hydrogen acceptors. As expected, liquid hydrogen acceptors increased the rate of reaction but, importantly, gaseous hydrogen acceptors also have been used. Ethene, propene, and but-1-ene showed up to a fivefold increase in the rate of dehydrogenation. Moreover, compared with the analogous liquid systems, the gaseous alternatives are a potentially more economic method of enhancing the activity and provide a simpler workup. The mechanism for the increase in rate was examined by density functional theory calculations, which showed that the propene hydrogenation competes effectively with the back-hydrogenation of the intermediates formed during the THCZ dehydrogenation, resulting in a shift in the equilibrium toward to the formation of CZ. Leopoldo Panero and his antology of the Spanish American Poetry. A “personal” reading of America

El presente artículo trata de ofrecer una lectura estética y política de la Antología de la poesía hispanoamericana que publicara Leopoldo Panero entre 1944 y 1945 bajo protección gubernamental. Para ello se parte de la particular biografía del escritor astorgano, su relación en los años treinta con los poetas hispanoamericanos –especialmente Vallejo y Neruda– y su gira por América ya como supuesto prohombre del régimen franquista en 1949 y 1954. La lectura sistemática de sus prólogos y selección de poetas revela la particular visión de Panero sobre Hispanoamérica, mediatizada por el concepto imperial de Falange pero formulada bajo su propia visión de lo que la lírica americana representa para la lengua castellana. Se sostiene así en estas líneas la tesis de que los postulados de Panero representan, a pesar de todo, una opción mucho más compleja de lo que se suele considerar.

Dramatic solvent effects on ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cycloalkenes

A series of metathesis polymers and copolymers have been formed and their structures were analysed by C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Noble metal and non-noble metal salt catalysts are distinguished by their behaviour in various solvents. Thus, in phenolic solvents, the former class produce alternating copolymers from cyclopentene and norbornene, while the latter are unaffected and produce random copolymers. In contrast, ether solvents have the effect of markedly increasing the cis content of polymers from the latter catalysts while the former are unaffected.
