Periodontal disease affects the periodontum which are tissues that support and protect the tooth and are composed by the gingiva, alveolar bone, cementum and periodontal ligament. Lesions in the periodontum have as main etiologic agent the presence of plaque or biofilm, which is formed in 24 hours and, basically, it consists of microorganisms surrounded by some bacteria rich matrix products and salivary glycoproteins. Gingivitis is the first clinical manifestation of periodontal disease and it is reversible if the etiologic agent (plaque) is removed. However, if it is not treated or controlled, it will lead to an irreversible periodontitis, and even evolve into alveolar bone, tissue destruction and, eventually, tooth loss

Currently it is clear that there are several factors that can act as modifiers of diseases, without causing them directly, but having the potential to make these conditions to progress faster and more severe. There is a growing number of studies investigating the relationship between DiabetesMellitus (DM) and Periodontal Disease (PD), including some studies focusing on the influence of genetic factors in this process. The aim of this study was to verify through a literature review, the influence of genetic polymorphisms in the development of PD in patients with DM. PubMed and BIREME were used as databases and the terms Periodontitis or Periodontal Disease, Polymorphism, DiabetesMellitus were searched. After a refinement in the literature, five studies were selected and they were related to chronic PD with DM and polymorphisms in cytokine genes, especially interleukin1 (IL1) e IL6. Polymorphisms were associated with a higher concentration of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the gingival crevicular fluid of diabetic patients when compared to non-diabetic. In conclusion, it is necessary to confirm this association with longitudinal studies that must investigate a larger number of cytokine genes in order to understand the cause-effect relationship between genetic polymorphisms, DM and PD.

The association between platelets, angiogenesis and progression or repair of periodontal disease has been little explored and, consequently, the results are inconclusive. The pathogenic bacteria present in the periodontal pocket release endotoxins that affect the endothelial integrity and are able to induce the production of chemical mediators derived from plasma proteins and blood clotting while altering platelet function. There is great interest in the modulation of platelet activity in vascular disorders, especially cardiovascular diseases. For this reason, antiplatelet drugs, that are commonly used in the prevention of thromboembolic diseases, such as myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke and peripheral arterial disease, have been used. Aspirin is the only non-steroidal antiinflammatory agent with antiplatelet activity. In the periodontium, instead of only reduces levels of inflammatory cytokines, also significantly affects bleeding on probing, suggesting a dose-dependent modulation of periodontitis. In contrast, clopidogrel and ticlopidine are thienopyridine drugs with no known antiinflammatory action, suggesting that this benefit is related to an antiinflammatory effect indirectly correlated to their antiplatelet activity already established. In the literature there is limited information about the effect of these drugs on periodontium and periodontal disease development. Antiplatelet drugs hypothetically can change both the pathogenesis of periodontitis and subsequent periodontal tissue repair by blocking the secretion of chemical mediators which in general are important in modulating inflammation and tissue repair.

Aim: observe the knowledge of dental caries and periodontal disease of primary schoolteachers, according to type of institution (public and private) from Araraquara city. methodology: for that participants were 113 teachers from public schools and 57 from private schools. The instrument of analysis was based on a questionnaire with closed and open questions concerning the etiology, prevention and development of dental caries and periodontal disease. Results: 97,3% of public s schoolteachers and 91,2% of private s schoolteachers answered that they knows what is dental caries, but they didn t answer correctly about the caries etiology as being multifactorial and about methods of prevention. Both of schoolteachers (public and private) had more sucessful when answered about bacterial plaque than periodontal disease and yours manifestation. Conclusion: the dental knowledge of schoolteachers in public and private school was evaluated and limited educational programs should be directed to both public and private schoolteachers, in order to increase the level of dental knowledge of them, so that they can act as educational agents with the children.

To treat periodontal disease is essential to establish a control in all etiological factors that cause destructive activity in periodontal tissues. Basic periodontal therapy may be applied to eliminate or/and to control all etiologic factors involved in disease development. In this paper, some aspects to stabilize advanced periodontal disease using basic periodontal therapy are analyzed and discussed.

Purpose: To evaluate the association among periodontal disease, diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension in pregnant women users of the Brazilian Health System (SUS). Methods: The sample consisted of 86 women, with pregnant age between the 4th and 7 th month, submitted to pre-natal attendance in Health Basic Unities (HBUs). Periodontal condition was evaluated by 2 calibrated researchers (Kappa = 0.91) through the Community Periodontal Index (CPI). A sphygmomanometer was used to check the arterial pressure, what was accomplished by the professionals from the HBUs; glycemia test was accomplished through a blood sample collected from the middle finger with a disposable lancet adapted to a lance device (Accu-Chek Softclix Pro; Roche, USA), and for checking the glycemia level, a glycemia monitor was used (Accu-Chek Advantage II, Roche, USA). Data were written on a numbered register form, avoiding patient identification. After, the same data were statistically analyzed through the Fisher Exact Test, in order to evaluate the existence of association between the variables blood glucose and periodontal disease. In this test, a significance level of 0,05 was adopted. Results Most of the pregnant woman presented periodontal health (58,1%); 41,9% of the research subjects showed at least one sign of periodontal disease, with 31,4% presenting gingivitis and 10,5% periodontitis. Hyperglycemia was detected in 51,2% and it was not found a value of arterial pressure higher than what is considered to be normal. Conclusion: it was not verified a significant association among the presence of periodontal disease, glycemia alteration and arterial hypertension in pregnant women who comprised this research.
