Developing innovative interventions that are in sync with a health promotion paradigm often represents a challenge for professionals working in local public health organizations. Thus, it is critical to have both professional development programs that favor new practices and tools to examine these practices. In this case study, we analyze the health promotion approach used in a pilot intervention addressing children’s vulnerability that was developed and carried out by participants enrolled in a public health professional development program. More specifically, we use a modified version of Guichard and Ridde’s (Une grille d’analyse des actions pour lutter contre les inégalités sociales de santé. In Potvin, L., Moquet, M.-J. and Jones, C. M. (eds), Réduire les Inégalités Sociales en Santé. INPES, Saint-Denis Cedex, pp. 297– 312, 2010) analytical grid to assess deductively the program participants’ use of health promotion practices in the analysis and planning, implementation, evaluation, sustainability and empowerment phases of the pilot intervention. We also seek evidence of practices involving (empowerment, participation, equity, holism, an ecological approach, intersectorality and sustainability) in the intervention. The results are mixed: our findings reveal evidence of the application of several dimensions of health promotion (equity, holism, an ecological approach, intersectorality and sustainability), but also a lack of integration of two key dimensions; that is, empowerment and participation, during various phases of the pilot intervention. These results show that the professional development program is associated with the adoption of a pilot intervention integrating multiple but not all dimensions of health promotion. We make recommendations to facilitate a more complete integration. This research also shows that the Guichard and Ridde grid proves to be a thorough instrument to document the practices of participants.

Chemical research in Brazil has grown significantly in the past 20 years, largely thanks to the Brazilian S&T Development Program of the federal government (PADCT). However, the newly achieved levels of highly qualified manpower and research infra-structure require new research organization frameworks to make science, technology and innovation really useful and meaningful for the citizens. The current requirements for creating viable networks of academic and industry researchers are presented and discussed as well as some structural and procedural bottlenecks that have to be eliminated, to achieve maximum high-quality science, technology and relevant innovation output.

Professores são convidados a introduzir uma aula expositiva numa sequência didática planejada. Os professores tiveram bastante dificuldade para localizar a atividade dentro do que concebiam sobre ensino e aprendizagem significativa. Diante da tarefa proposta, procuraram sistematizar os conteúdos anteriormente desenvolvidos na sala de aula, atribuindo novo sentido à estratégia, sem abandonar a importância de ouvir o aluno e de articular adequadamente os conceitos. A aula expositiva de cada um foi ressignificada, aparecendo com posição definida na sequência pedagógica e com conteúdo significativo em relação ao nível de conhecimento do aprendiz. A conclusão fundamental foi que, mesmo sem ser explícito, era possível haver diálogo entre os saberes do professor e dos alunos, o que parece ter ocorrido também com os professores enquanto aprendizes no programa de formação.

Background The protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR-1), the main platelet receptor for thrombin, represents a novel target for treatment of arterial thrombosis, and SCH 530348 is an orally active, selective, competitive PAR-1 antagonist. We designed TRA.CER to evaluate the efficacy and safety of SCH 530348 compared with placebo in addition to standard of care in patients with non-ST-segment elevation (NSTE) acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and high-risk features. Trial design TRA.CER is a prospective, randomized, double-blind, multicenter, phase III trial with an original estimated sample size of 10,000 subjects. Our primary objective is to demonstrate that SCH 530348 in addition to standard of care will reduce the incidence of the composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, recurrent ischemia with rehospitalization, and urgent coronary revascularization compared with standard of care alone. Our key secondary objective is to determine whether SCH 530348 will reduce the composite of cardiovascular death, MI, or stroke compared with standard of care alone. Secondary objectives related to safety are the composite of moderate and severe GUSTO bleeding and clinically significant TIMI bleeding. The trial will continue until a predetermined minimum number of centrally adjudicated primary and key secondary end point events have occurred and all subjects have participated in the study for at least I year. The TRA.CER trial is part of the large phase III SCH 530348 development program that includes a concomitant evaluation in secondary prevention. Conclusion TRA.CER will define efficacy and safety of the novel platelet PAR-1 inhibitor SCH 530348 in the treatment of high-risk patients with NSTE ACS in the setting of current treatment strategies. Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), the most common severe congenital heart malformation, occurs sporadically, without other anomaly, and from unknown cause in 70% of cases. Through a genome-wide survey of 114 subjects with TOF and their unaffected parents, we identified 11 de novo copy number variants (CNVs) that were absent or extremely rare (<0.1%) in 2,265 controls. We then examined a second, independent TOF cohort (n = 398) for additional CNVs at these loci. We identified CNVs at chromosome 1q21.1 in 1% (5/512, P = 0.0002, OR = 22.3) of nonsyndromic sporadic TOF cases. We also identified recurrent CNVs at 3p25.1, 7p21.3 and 22q11.2. CNVs in a single subject with TOF occurred at six loci, two that encode known (NOTCH1, JAG1) disease-associated genes. Our findings predict that at least 10% (4.5-15.5%, 95% confidence interval) of sporadic nonsyndromic TOF cases result from de novo CNVs and suggest that mutations within these loci might be etiologic in other cases of TOF.

Schistosoma mansoni is responsible for the neglected tropical disease schistosomiasis that affects 210 million people in 76 countries. Here we present analysis of the 363 megabase nuclear genome of the blood fluke. It encodes at least 11,809 genes, with an unusual intron size distribution, and new families of micro-exon genes that undergo frequent alternative splicing. As the first sequenced flatworm, and a representative of the Lophotrochozoa, it offers insights into early events in the evolution of the animals, including the development of a body pattern with bilateral symmetry, and the development of tissues into organs. Our analysis has been informed by the need to find new drug targets. The deficits in lipid metabolism that make schistosomes dependent on the host are revealed, and the identification of membrane receptors, ion channels and more than 300 proteases provide new insights into the biology of the life cycle and new targets. Bioinformatics approaches have identified metabolic chokepoints, and a chemogenomic screen has pinpointed schistosome proteins for which existing drugs may be active. The information generated provides an invaluable resource for the research community to develop much needed new control tools for the treatment and eradication of this important and neglected disease.

This paper analyses the different indices applied for the measurement of human development as constructed by the United Nations Development Program. Of special interest is the Gender Development Index (GDI), introduced in the 1995 Human Development Report and the Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM). In light of the mate bias in the Indian socioeconomic context, the application of the GDI and GEM acquires special significance. A critical appraisal of their theoretical base and their application has been undertaken in this paper. The conclusion is that GDI and GEM. although praise-worthy achievements on the part of the UNDP, do not adequately reflect or measure male/female disparity in the Indian context. Both indices suffer from the weakness of employing a pre-assigned value of the Gender Sensitive Equity Indicator. They also exhibit several other shortcomings, outlined here. GDI is a poor indicator of the relative deprivation of females as shown by our analysis of the relationship between the GDI and the female/male ratio for 16 Indian core states.

In 1851, Theodor Bilharz described a parasitic infection (bilharzia) that would later be termed schistosomiasis. Currently, 200 million people in 74 countries have this disease; 120 million of them have symptoms, and 20 million have severe illness.1 Schistosomiasis is caused by parasitic trematode worms (schistosomes) that reside in the abdominal veins of their vertebrate definitive hosts. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo descrever um Programa de Desenvolvimento oferecido pela Universidade Corporativa de empresa mineradora, com atuação em Vitória/ES, e compreender as possíveis relações deste Programa com o desenvolvimento das competências profissionais esperadas pela Organização. A Empresa Gama, que assim será identificada durante todo o trabalho, teve o início de sua Universidade Corporativa no ano de 2003, sob o propósito de transformar vidas desenvolvendo pessoas, e é vista pela Empresa Gama como fator importante para a geração de competitividade, para evolução nos negócios e aumento da sinergia organizacional. Dentre todos os Programas ofertados, opta-se pelo estudo do Programa “Trilha de Gestão e Liderança”, lançado em 2004, e voltado para a formação de gestores da Empresa Gama. Para a realização desta pesquisa qualitativa, foram entrevistados quatro Supervisores da Empresa Gama, que tiveram a oportunidade de participar da “Trilha de Gestão e Liderança”. Foram realizadas entrevistas semi-estruturadas e pesquisa documental para obtenção de dados. Opta-se pela Analise de Conteúdo como método de análise. Compreende-se que, para a Empresa Gama, o Programa “Trilha de Gestão e Liderança” é uma importante ferramenta para o desenvolvimento das competências esperadas pela organização. Contudo, não se trata da principal ferramenta, estando nítido que este desenvolvimento vai muito além dos Programas oferecidos por sua Universidade Corporativa.

RESUMO - Introdução: A Inteligência Emocional (IE) é considerada um factor preditivo de sucesso, mais significativo do que outros tipos de inteligência e o seu estudo tem recebido cada vez maior relevância com o objectivo de aumentar os níveis de desempenho em gestão (Goleman, 2009). O desenvolvimento da IE no âmbito da formação em gestão apresenta resultados contraditórios sendo necessário confirmar o potencial de desenvolvimento da IE em programas de formação específicos. Objectivos: Confirmar a importância da IE para a gestão da saúde e perceber o seu potencial de desenvolvimento em programas de formação específicos; analisar o módulo opcional de Emoção, Liderança e Coaching na Gestão em Saúde; e construir uma proposta de modelo que avalie se a participação nessa Unidade Curricular permite aumentar os níveis de IE. Metodologia: Realizou-se uma revisão da literatura, que permitiu ter acesso aos conceitos e teorias e, posteriormente, o estudo de caso do módulo opcional que permitiu compará-lo com outras teorias existentes. Finalmente, construiu-se uma proposta de modelo de avaliação da IE, com um desenho quasi-experimental. Conclusões: A IE é um factor essencial para o sucesso, principalmente na Gestão da Saúde, pelas características do mercado e das organizações. Os instrumentos de avaliação da IE com recurso à medição de competências são os que apresentam menos limitações. O peso do módulo opcional no Curso de Mestrado em Gestão da Saúde, é pouco significativo (3,33% dos ECTS) e apenas 36,6% dos alunos o frequentaram. A estrutura do módulo está alinhada com as directrizes de outras teorias, mas a sua curta duração poderá constituir uma limitação. Sugere-se a criação de apoio tutorial individualizado e prolongado. O modelo de avaliação proposto representa a primeira tentativa de avaliação do desenvolvimento da IE na formação em Gestão da Saúde em Portugal e a sua aplicação permitiria a o aprimoramento do potencial de desenvolvimento das competências dos gestores. ---------------------------------- ABSTRACT - Introduction: Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the most predictive factor of success when compared with other types of intelligence. Since it is believed to increase performance levels, EI study has been given more relevance (Goleman, 2009). EI development studies show contradictory results, becoming necessary to prove the benefits of the development programs. Purposes: This study aimed to confirm the importance of the EI in health care management; to perceive the EI development potential of specific programs; to analyze the optional curricular unit of Emotion, Coaching and Leadership in Health Management; and to build a model that proposes to evaluate the student’s EI development. Methods: After the Literature Revision, the Case Study of the Curricular Unit allowed to compare it with other existing theories. The Model of EI evaluation consists on a quasi-experimental study. Conclusions: EI is an essential factor for success, mainly in Health Care Management, because of its market and organizations characteristics. The ability instruments of EI evaluation are those which show the least limitations. The Curricular Unit represents only 3,33% of the ECTS provided by this Health Management Master. Only 36.6% of master’s students chose to participate in this curricular unit. The structure of the curricular unit is lined up with the guide-lines of other theories. However, being a 6 weeks program, it could represent a limitation. It is suggested to create an individual and longitudinal tutorial support. The EI evaluation model proposed represents the first attempt to evaluate de EI development in Health Management programs in Portugal. Its application could increase the manager’s development efficacy.
