Cobalt(III) complexes of diacetyl monooxime benzoyl hydrazone (dmoBH(2)) and diacetyl monooxime isonicotinoyl hydrazone (dmoInH(2)) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses and spectroscopic methods. The X-ray crystal structures of the two hydrazone ligands, as well as that of the cobalt(III) complex [Co(III)(dmoInH)(2)]Cl center dot 2H(2)O, are also reported. It is found that in the cobalt(III) complexes the Co(III) ion is hexa-coordinated, the hydrazone ligands behaving as mono-anionic tridentate O,N,N donors. In the [Co(III)(dmoInH) (2)]Cl center dot 2H(2)O complex, the amide and the oxime hydrogens are deprotonated for both the ligands, while the isonicotine nitrogens are protonated. In the [Co(III)(d-moBH)(2)] Cl complex, only the amide nitrogens are deprotonated. It is shown that the additional hydrogen bonding capability of the isonicotine nitrogen results in different conformation and supramolecular structure for dmoInH(2), compared to dmoBH(2), in the solid state. Comparing the structure of the [CoIII(dmoInH)(2)]Cl center dot 2H(2)O with that of the Zn(II) complex of the same ligand, reported earlier, it is seen that the metal ion has a profound influence on the supramolecular structure, due to change in geometrical dispositions of the chelate rings.

A mononuclear octahedral nickel(II) complex [Ni(HL(1))(2)](SCN)(2) (1) and an unusual penta-nuclear complex [{(NiL(2))(mu-SCN)}(4)Ni(NCS)(2)]center dot 2CH(3)CN (2) where HL(1) = 3-(2-aminoethylimino)butan-2-one oxime and HL(2) = 3-(hydroxyimino)butan-2-ylidene)amino)propylimino)butan-2-one oxime have been prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography. The mono-condensed ligand, HL(1), was prepared by the 1:1 condensation of the 1,2-diaminoethane with diacetylmonoxime in methanol under high dilution. Complex 1 is found to be a mer isomer and the amine hydrogen atoms are involved in extensive hydrogen bonding with the thiocyanate anions. The dicondensed ligand, HL(2), was prepared by the 1:2 condensation of the 1,3-diaminopropane with diacetylmonoxime in methanol. The central nickel(II) in 2 is coordinated by six nitrogen atoms of six thiocyanate groups, four of which utilize their sulphur atoms to connect four NiL2 moieties to form a penta-nuclear complex and it is unique in the sense that this is the first thiocyanato bridged penta-nuclear nickel(II) compound with Schiff base ligands.

X-ray Rheology is an experimental technique which uses time-ressolved x-ray scattering as probe of the molecular level structural reorganisation which accompanies flow. It provides quantitative information on the direction alignment and on the level of global orientation. This information is very helpful in interpreting the classic rheological data on liquid crystal polymers. In this research we use data obtained from a cellulose derivate which exhibits a thermotropic liquid crystal phase. We show how increased shear rates lead to a rapid rise in the global orientation and we related this to therories of flow in liquid crystal polymers from the literature. We show that the relaxation time is independent of the prior shear rate.

We report an atomic resolution X-ray crystal structure containing both enantiomers of rac-[Ru(phen)2dppz]2+ with the d-(ATGCAT)2 DNA duplex (phen = phenanthroline; dppz = dipyridophenazine). The first example of any enantiomeric pair crystallized with a DNA duplex shows different orientations of the Λ and Δ binding sites, separated by a clearly defined structured water monolayer. Job plots show that the same species is present in solution. Each enantiomer is bound at a TG/CA step and shows intercalation from the minor groove. One water molecule is directly located on one phenazine N atom in the Δ-enantiomer only.

The synthesis, spectra and X-ray crystal structure of N,N`-(+/-)-trans-1,2-cyclohexylenebis(3-ethoxysalicylideneamine) H-2(t-3-EtOsalchxn), a salen-type ligand, are reported. The Schiff base was characterized by elemental analysis, m.p., IR, electronic spectra, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra. The spectra are discussed and compared with those of N,N`-(+/-)-trans-1,2-cyclohexylenebis(salicylideneamine), H-2(t-salchxn). The electronic and IR spectra were also resolved by deconvolution. The influence of the ethoxy group on the IR, electronic spectrum, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra is discussed. Strong intramolecular forces are present as supported by the IR and H-1 NMR spectra and the X-ray crystal structure. An intermolecular hydrogen bond is observed and appears twice in a pair of molecules in the unit cell. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The compounds [Fe(ch)(CO)(2)PP3] (1) (ch = chalcone) and [Fe(sba)(CO)(2)PPh3] (2) (sba = sorbic acid) were prepared by irradiating the tetracarbonyltriphenylphosphineiron(0) complex in benzene in the presence of ch or sba. The compounds were characterized by infrared and P-31 NMR spectroscopies. Their electrochemical behavior was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and the results suggest that their oxidations occur by more than one electrochemical step, producing free ch and sba, free PPh3 and solvated Fe(III). It was observed that sba ligand contributes more effectively to the stabilization of metal center in these complexes, the X-ray crystal and molecular structures of 1 and 2 were determined; it was shown that the Fe atom adopts a distorted octahedral coordinated geometry in which three of the sites are occupied by the ch or sba ligand. The [Fe(ch)(CO)(2)PPh3] complex is a monomer and the unit cell of complex 2 contains exist two identical and crystallographically independent molecules of [Fe(sba)(CO)(2)PPh3] which are linked by short hydrogen bonds O-H . . .O (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier B.V. A síntese e a estrutura cristalina por difração de raios-X de dois análogos de neolignanas, 2-(4-clorofenil)-1-feniletanona (20) e 2-[tio(4-clorofenil)]-1-(3,4-dimetoxifenil)propan-1-ona (12) são descritas. O composto 12 apresenta atividade intracelular contra Leishmania donovani e Leishmania amazonensis de amastigotas que causam a leishmaniose tegumentar e visceral. Além disso, a teoria do funcional de densidade (DFT) com o funcional híbrido B3LYP foi empregado para calcular um conjunto de descritores moleculares para dezenove análogos sintéticos de neolignanas com atividades antileishmaniose. Posteriormente, a análise discriminante stepwise foi realizada para investigar possíveis relações entre a estrutura molecular e atividades biológicas. Por meio dessa análise os compostos foram classificados em dois grupos ativos e inativos de acordo com seu grau de atividade biológica, e as propriedades mais importantes foram as cargas de alguns átomos, a afinidade eletrônica e o ClogP.

Estudos fitoquímicos com as cascas do caule e com as folhas de Croton palanostigma Klotzsch (Euphorbiaceae) levaram ao isolamento do novo diterpeno clerodânico 8-epicordatina (2), além de éster metílico do ácido 12-oxohardwickiico (3), aparisthmano, cordatina (1), ácido ent-trachiloban-18-óico, óxido de ent-13-epimanoila, óxido de ent-3-oxo-13-epimanoila, óxido de ent-3β-hidroxi-13-epimanoila, sitosterol, estigmasterol, estigmastan-3-ona, 6β-hidroxiestigmast-4-en-3-ona, 6β-hidroxiestigmasta-4,22-dien-3-ona, estigmast-4-en-3-ona, estigmasta-4,22-dien-3-ona, ácido 3-O-acetilaleuritolico, 11α-hidroxiurs-12-en-3-ona, α-amirenona, 24-metilenocicloartenona e lupenona. Estas substâncias foram isoladas através de procedimentos fitoquímicos usuais e suas estruturas foram deduzidas por estudos espectroscópicos, incluindo experimentos em 2D. Adicionalmente, a estrutura cristalina de 8-epicordatina (2) foi determinada por difração de raios-X. Cálculos teóricos de RMN ao nível B3PW91/DGDZVP foram usados para confirmação dos assinalamentos dos deslocamentos químicos dos hidrogênios H-7α e H-7β de 8-epicordatina.

The monomeric compound bis[(carbonyl)(quinoline-2-thiolate-N,S)]iron(II) was synthesized and studied by IR and Mossbauer spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and X-ray diffraction. The molecule has two terminal carbonyl groups and two quinoline-2-thiolate anions coordinated as N,S-donor chelates, and the iron atom shows an octahedral coordination geometry.

The Gedunin compound (C28H34O6) is a natural product extracted from Trichilia pallida that has shown a wide activity. The crystallographic structure shows two conformers in the asymmetric unit, which differ in a rotation of the furan group. To understand this molecular arrangement, the density functional calculations. Molecular Electrostatic Potential (MEP) and thermodynamic function calculation have been performed at the B3LYP/6-311++g(d,p) level. Both conformers were optimized and the agreement with the experimental structure was very good, making possible further theoretical analysis of the structure. The inter-conversion between two conformers depends on the energy barrier. This process is studied in the vacuum and shows two transition states with a low energetic barrier for a potential energy curve scanning rigid around furan group: 4.37 kcal/mol and 16.52 kcal/mol. As the first transition state has a notably lower energetic barrier, the preferred inter-conversion pathway between the conformers involves the first rather than the second transition state. Understanding this transition state in detail led us to perform its optimization, showing an energetic barrier around 3.66 kcal/mol. The negative free energy and low enthalpy confirm that the process is spontaneous and exothermic. The results show that this requirement makes the existence of the two conformers in the asymmetric unit possible. The structure of molecules in the asymmetric unit is better understood when the MEP is used on the interaction between molecules. For Gedunin, both molecules have shown MEP with well-defined regions, and this behavior contributes to the observed link between molecules and for the negative regions complementing positive regions of another molecule.
