Efficient 3′-end processing of cell cycle-regulated mammalian histone premessenger RNAs (pre-mRNAs) requires an upstream stem–loop and a histone downstream element (HDE) that base pairs with the U7 small ribonuclearprotein. Insertions between these elements have two effects: the site of cleavage moves in concert with the HDE and processing efficiency declines. We used Xenopus oocytes to ask whether compensatory length insertions in the human U7 RNA could restore the fidelity and efficiency of processing of mouse histone insertion pre-mRNAs. An insertion of 5 nt into U7 RNA that extends its complementary to the HDE compensated for both defects in processing of a 5-nt insertion substrate; a noncomplementary insertion into U7 did not. Yet, the noncomplementary insertion mutant U7 was shown to be active on insertion substrates further mutated to allow base pairing. Our results suggest that the histone pre-mRNA becomes rigidified upstream of its HDE, allowing the bound U7 small ribonucleoprotein to measure from the HDE to the cleavage site. Such a mechanism may be common to other RNA measuring systems. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of length suppression in an RNA processing system.

Substantial progress has been made in understanding the genetic basis of temperature-compensated circadian clocks. Ultradian rhythms, with a period shorter than 24 h, are at least as widespread as circadian rhythms. We have initiated genetic analysis of defecation behavior, which is controlled by an ultradian clock in Caenorhabditis elegans. The defecation motor program is activated every 45 sec, and this rhythm is temperature compensated. We describe mutations in 12 genes that either shorten or lengthen the cycle period. We find that most of these mutations also disrupt temperature compensation, suggesting that this process is an integral part of the clock. These genes open the way for molecular genetic dissection of this ultradian clock.

The joint effect of fiber chromatic dispersion and fiber nonlinearity onto single-sideband and double-sideband modulated radio-over-fiber links is investigated. Experimental and simulated results show that modulation suppression caused by the chromatic dispersion in radio-over-fiber links can be successfully eliminated in both schemes only when the system is in the linear regime. Under nonlinear transmission the received microwave carrier power depends on the optical incident power.

The present paper contains results characterizing relatively compact subsets of the space of the closed subsets of a metrizable space, equipped with various hypertopologies. We investigate the hyperspace topologies that admit a representation as weak topologies generated by families of gap functionals defined on closed sets, as well as hit-and-miss topologies and proximal-hit and-miss topologies.

For a polish space M and a Banach space E let B1 (M, E) be the space of first Baire class functions from M to E, endowed with the pointwise weak topology. We study the compact subsets of B1 (M, E) and show that the fundamental results proved by Rosenthal, Bourgain, Fremlin, Talagrand and Godefroy, in case E = R, also hold true in the general case. For instance: a subset of B1 (M, E) is compact iff it is sequentially (resp. countably) compact, the convex hull of a compact bounded subset of B1 (M, E) is relatively compact, etc. We also show that our class includes Gulko compact. In the second part of the paper we examine under which conditions a bounded linear operator T : X ∗ → Y so that T |BX ∗ : (BX ∗ , w∗ ) → Y is a Baire-1 function, is a pointwise limit of a sequence (Tn ) of operators with T |BX ∗ : (BX ∗ , w∗ ) → (Y, · ) continuous for all n ∈ N. Our results in this case are connected with classical results of Choquet, Odell and Rosenthal.

Measurements of area summation for luminance-modulated stimuli are typically confounded by variations in sensitivity across the retina. Recently we conducted a detailed analysis of sensitivity across the visual field (Baldwin et al, 2012) and found it to be well-described by a bilinear “witch’s hat” function: sensitivity declines rapidly over the first 8 cycles or so, more gently thereafter. Here we multiplied luminance-modulated stimuli (4 c/deg gratings and “Swiss cheeses”) by the inverse of the witch’s hat function to compensate for the inhomogeneity. This revealed summation functions that were straight lines (on double log axes) with a slope of -1/4 extending to ≥33 cycles, demonstrating fourth-root summation of contrast over a wider area than has previously been reported for the central retina. Fourth-root summation is typically attributed to probability summation, but recent studies have rejected that interpretation in favour of a noisy energy model that performs local square-law transduction of the signal, adds noise at each location of the target and then sums over signal area. Modelling shows our results to be consistent with a wide field application of such a contrast integrator. We reject a probability summation model, a quadratic model and a matched template model of our results under the assumptions of signal detection theory. We also reject the high threshold theory of contrast detection under the assumption of probability summation over area.

We present the analytical description of a specific nonlinear fibre channel with non-compensated dispersion. Information theory analysis shows that capacity of such nonlinear fibre channel does not decay with growing signal-to-noise ratio. © 2012 IEEE.

In this Letter, we theoretically and numerically analyze the performance of coherent optical transmission systems that deploy inline or transceiver based nonlinearity compensation techniques. For systems where signal-signal nonlinear interactions are fully compensated, we find that beyond the performance peak the signal-to-noise ratio degradation has a slope of 3 dBSNR/dBPower suggesting a quartic rather than quadratic dependence on signal power. This is directly related to the fact that signals in a given span will interact not only with linear amplified spontaneous emission noise, but also with the nonlinear four-wave mixing products generated from signal-noise interaction in previous (hitherto) uncompensated spans. The performance of optical systems employing different nonlinearity compensation schemes were numerically simulated and compared against analytical predictions, showing a good agreement within a 0.4 dB margin of error.

Nonlinear distortion in delay-compensated spans for intermediate coupling is studied for the first time. Coupling strengths under -30dB/100m allow distortion reduction using shorter compensation lengths and higher delays. For higher coupling strengths no significant penalty results from shorter compensation lengths.

The measurement of fast changing temperature fluctuations is a challenging problem due to the inherent limited bandwidth of temperature sensors. This results in a measured signal that is a lagged and attenuated version of the input. Compensation can be performed provided an accurate, parameterised sensor model is available. However, to account for the in influence of the measurement environment and changing conditions such as gas velocity, the model must be estimated in-situ. The cross-relation method of blind deconvolution is one approach for in-situ characterisation of sensors. However, a drawback with the method is that it becomes positively biased and unstable at high noise levels. In this paper, the cross-relation method is cast in the discrete-time domain and a bias compensation approach is developed. It is shown that the proposed compensation scheme is robust and yields unbiased estimates with lower estimation variance than the uncompensated version. All results are verified using Monte-Carlo simulations.

There are two main aims of the paper. The first one is to extend the criterion for the precompactness of sets in Banach function spaces to the setting of quasi-Banach function spaces. The second one is to extend the criterion for the precompactness of sets in the Lebesgue spaces $L_p(\Rn)$, $1 \leq p < \infty$, to the so-called power quasi-Banach function spaces. These criteria are applied to establish compact embeddings of abstract Besov spaces into quasi-Banach function spaces. The results are illustrated on embeddings of Besov spaces $B^s_{p,q}(\Rn)$, $0
