Heavy metals are major toxic pollutants with severe health effects on humans. They are released into the environment from a variety of industrial activities. Cadmium, lead, zinc, chromium and copper are the most toxic metals of widespread use in industries such as tanning, electroplating, electronic equipment manufacturing and chemical processing plants. Heavy metals contribute to a variety of adverse health environmental effects due to their acute and chronic exposure through air, water and food chain. Conventional treatment methods of metal removal are often limited by their cost and ineffectiveness at low concentrations. Adsorption, the use of inactivated biomass as adsorbents offers an attractive potential alternative to their conventional methods. Mango peel and Alisma plantago aquatica are naturally occurring and abundant biomass can offer an economical solution for metal removal. The Cd(II), Pb(II), Zn(II), Cr(III) and Cu(II) adsorption by milled adsorbents of mango peel and Alisma plantago aquatica were evaluated in batches.

The chemical contamination of natural waters is a global problem with a worldwide impact. Considering the relevance of this problem, this thesis is intended, on one hand, to develop different separation/preconcentration techniques based on membranes ability to permeate anions for the transport of toxic oxyanions of chromium(VI) and arsenic contained in aqueous matrices. In particular, we have investigated supported liquid membranes and polymer inclusion membranes, both of which contain the commercial quaternary ammonium salt Aliquat 336 as a carrier, as well as commercial anion exchange membranes. On the other hand, we have focused on the development of chemical sensors to facilitate the monitoring of several metals from different aqueous matrices. Thus, a selective optical sensor for Cr(VI) based on polymeric membranes containing Aliquat 336 as an ionophore has been designed. Additionally, mercury-based screen-printed electrodes have been evaluated for for cadmium, lead, copper and zinc detection.

Eisenia andrei, Lumbricus rubellus and Lumbricus terrestris were exposed to 250, 250 and 350 mg kg(-1) Cu respectively in Cu(NO3)(2(aq)) amended soil for 28 d. Earthworms were then depurated for 24 to 72 h, digested and analysed for Cu and Ti or, subsequent to depuration were dissected to remove any remaining soil particles from the alimentary canal and then digested and analysed. This latter treatment proved impossible for E. andrei due to its small size. Regardless of depuration time, soil particles were retained in the alimentary canal of L. rubellus and L. terrestris. Tissue concentration determinations indicate that E. andrei should be depurated for 24 h, L. rubellus for 48 h and L. terrestris should be dissected. Ti was bioaccumulated and therefore could not be used as an inert tracer to determine mass of retained soil. Calculations indicate that after 28 d earthworms were still absorbing Cu from soil. No unequivocal evidence exists of genetically inherited resistance to metals/metalloids in field populations of earthworms. We studied cocoon production in adult Lumbricus rubellus Hoffmeister collected from an abandoned arsenic and copper mine (Devon Great Consols, Devon, UK), and abandoned tungsten mine (Carrock Fell, Cumbria, UK) and an uncontaminated cultured population. The earthworms were kept in uncontaminated soil for nine weeks. From a total of 42 L. rubellus from each site, Devon Great Consols adults produced 301 cocoons, of which 42 were viable; Carrock Fell 60 cocoons, of which 11 were viable; and the reference population 101 cocoons, of which 62 were viable. The hatchlings were collected and stored at 4degreesC at weekly intervals. After 12 weeks, all hatchlings were transferred to clean soil and maintained at 15degreesC for 20 weeks until they showed evidence of a clitellum. In toxicity trials, F1 generation L. rubellus were exposed to 2,000 mg As/kg as sodium arsenate or 300 mg Cu/kg as copper chloride for 28 d. The F1 generation L. rubellus from Devon Great Consols mine demonstrated resistance to arsenate but not copper. All L. rubellus from Devon Great Consols kept in soil treated with sodium arsenate remained in good condition over the 28-d period but lost condition rapidly and suffered high mortality in soil treated with copper chloride. The control population suffered high mortality in soil treated with sodium arsenate and copper chloride. Previous work has shown that field-collected adults demonstrate resistance to both arsenate and Cu toxicity under these conditions. Thus, while arsenate resistance may be demonstrated in F1 generation L. rubellus from one of the contaminated sites, Cu resistance is not. The F1 adults and F2 cocoons did not have significantly higher levels of As than the control population, with no residual As tissue burden, suggesting that resistance to As in these populations may be inherited.

Three species of ectomycorrhizal fungi (Hebeloma crustuliniforme, Suillus variegatus and Cenococcum geophilum) were grown in axenic culture amended with range of AsO43– concentration under three different PO43– regimes. The fungi exhibited different growth responses to AsO43– that varied with PO43– concentration. Suillus variegatus showed the greatest sensitivity to AsO43–, with growth almost completely inhibited in the presence of AsO43– under the lower two PO43– treatments. Under the highest PO43– treatment however, growth was enhanced and S. variegatus was able to persist at AsO43– concentrations of up to 4 mM. Hebeloma crustuliniforme also showed high sensitivity to AsO43– especially at low PO43– concentration. The two higher PO43– treatments had an ameliorating effect on AsO43– toxicity in H. crustuliniforme. This demonstrates the ability of PO43– to alleviate AsO43– toxicity. The response from S. variegatus and H. crustuliniforme, both basidiomycetes, was in contrast to the ascomycete C. geophilum. This fungus demonstrated tolerance to AsO43– when grown in culture solution and PO43– did not have an ameliorating effect on AsO43– toxicity in C. geophilum.

Titanate nanotubes (TiNTs) were obtained by hydrothermal treatment of anatase powder in aqueous NaOH solution and then modified with 2,9,16,23-tertracarboxyl phthalocyanine copper(H) (CuPc). This hybrid organic inorganic nanoscopic system was characterized by X-ray diffraction, microscopy, and spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of pure and modified TiNTs revealed multiwall structures with an average outer diameter of 9 nm and a length of several hundred nanometers. The tubular morphology of the TiNTs was covered with CuPc-film. The amount of CuPc adsorbed onto the TiNTs was quantified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Using the same technique and spin-trapping methodology, the photogeneration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the TiNTs was systematically investigated. A drastic quenching of photoactivity was observed in the CuPc/TiNT hybrid system. Electron transfer from excited CuPc states to the TiNT conduction band followed by electron recombination may be the cause of this quenching.

Solid paraffin-based carbon paste electrodes modified with 2-aminothiazole organofunctionalized silica have been applied to the anodic stripping determination of copper ions in ethanol fuel samples without any sample treatment. The proposed method comprised four steps: (1) copper ions preconcentration at open circuit potential directly in the ethanol fuel sample; (2) exchange of the solution and immediate cathodic reduction of the absorbate at controlled potential; (3) differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry; (4) electrochemical surface regeneration by applying a positive potential in acid media. Factors affecting the preconcentration, reduction and stripping steps were investigated and the optimum conditions were employed to develop the analytical procedure. Using a preconcentration time of 20 min and reduction time of 120 s at -0.3 V versus Ag/AgCl(sat) a linear range from 7.5 x 10(-8) to 2.5 x 10(-6) mol L(-1) with detection limit of 3.1 x 10(-8) mol L(-1) was obtained. Interference studies have shown a decrease in the interference effect according to the sequence: Ni > Zn > Cd > Pb > Fe. However, the interference effects of these ions have not forbidden the application of the proposed method. Recovery values between 98.8 and 102.3% were obtained for synthetic samples spiked with known amounts of Cu(2+) and interfering metallic ions. The developed electrode was successfully applied to the determination of Cu(2+) in commercial ethanol fuel samples. The results were compared to those obtained by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy by using the F-test and t-test. Neither F-value nor t-value have exceeded the critical values at 95% confidence level, confirming that there are no significant differences between the results obtained by both methods. Calcium copper titanate (CaCu3Ti4O12) ceramic varistors were prepared by solid-state method. The samples were several times heat treated in vacuum and the evolution of electrical characteristics were monitored by current density versus electric field measurements and impedance spectroscopy. Repeated heat treatments in vacuum (900 degrees C for 1 h, 0.01 Torr) lead to a desorption of oxygen adsorbed at the grain boundaries and consequently to a degradation of the varistor properties. During further successive heat treatments some oxygen from the grain interior moves to the grain boundary thereby partially restoring the varistor properties. The present study was designed to evaluate the metallurgical properties of an experimental, low-cost copper-zinc-aluminum-nickel alloy for dental castings. Some specimens were subjected to heat treatment after induction casting. The extent of corrosion was determined by measuring weight loss of specimens stored in a sodium sulfite solution. In the as-cast specimens, tests demonstrated the presence of three phases: the first consisted of copper-zinc-aluminum, the second was similar but lower in copper and aluminum, and the third consisted of an intermetallic compound of manganese-nickel-phosphorus. After heat treatment, the first phase remained relatively constant, the second was converted to Cu3Al, and the third increased in volume. The weight loss from the as-cast specimens was eight times that of the heat-treated specimens. It was concluded that the heat treatment substantially changed the microstructure and improved the corrosion resistance of the experimental alloy.

A significant increase of surface hydrophilicity of copper and gold surfaces was obtained after atmospheric pressure plasma treatment using the surface dielectric barrier discharge with specific electrode geometry, the so-called diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge. Surface wettability was estimated using the sessile drop method with further calculation of the surface free energy. After the plasma treatments, it was observed that the treated surfaces exhibited hydrophobic recovery (or aging effect). The aging effect was studied in different storage environments, such as air, low and high vacuum. The role of plasma and the reasons of the following aging effect are discussed with respect to the observed hydrophilic recovery after immersing the aged surfaces into deionized water. The changes in the surface morphology, composition and bond structure are presented and discussed as well. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
