Colloids of palladium nanoparticles have been prepared by the solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method. The as-prepared Pd colloid consists of particles with an average diameter of 2.8 +/- 0.1 nm. Digestive ripening of the as-prepared Pd colloid, a process involving refluxing the as-prepared colloid at or near the boiling point of the solvent in the presence of a passivating agent, dodecanethiol resulted in a previously reported Pd-thiolate cluster, Pd(SC12H25)(2)](6) but did not render the expected narrowing down of the particle size distribution. Solventless thermolysis of the Pd-thiolate complex resulted in various Pd systems such as Pd(0), PdS, and Pd@PdO core-shell nanoparticles thus demonstrating its versatility. These I'd nanostructures have been characterized using high-resolution electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction methods. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Research on structure and magnetic properties of polynuclear metal complexes to understand the structural and chemical factors governing the electronic exchange coupling mediated by multi-atom bridging ligands is of growing interest. Hydrothermal treatment of Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O with N-(4-carboxyphenyl)iminodiacetic acid N-4(H(3)CPIDA)] at 150 degrees C yielded a 3D coordination polymer of general formula Ni-3{N-4( CPIDA)}(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 6H(2)O (1). An analogous network of general formula Co-3{N-3(CPIDA)}(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 3H(2)O (2) was synthesized using N-(3-carboxyphenyl) iminodiacetic acid N-3(H(3)CPIDA)] in combination with Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O under identical reaction condition. Both the complexes contain trinuclear secondary building unit, and crystallized in monoclinic system with space groups C2/c (1) and P2(1)/c (2), respectively. Variable temperature magnetic characterization of these complexes in the temperature range of 2-300 K indicated the presence of overall ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic behavior for 1 and 2, respectively. Density functional theory calculations (B3LYP functional) were performed for further insight on the trinuclear units to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation on the overall magnetic behavior of the complexes 1 and 2. Polyamide-phosphate esters were synthesized by interfacial polycondensation of aryl phosphorodichloridates with the diols of phenoxaphosphine and phosphine oxide in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst. The polymers were characterized by infra-red and 1H, 13C and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) spectroscopy. The molecular weights were determined by end-group analysis using 31P n.m.r. spectral data. The phenoxaphosphine-containing polymers showed superior thermostability and flame retardancy over the phosphine-oxide-containing polymers.

A new method of construction of carbon-carbon bond is described. Thus the dianions generated from the metal-ammonia reduction of substituted benzoic acids readily undergo Michael addition with methyl crotonate resulting in synthetically useful products having a quaternary carbon. Based on this strategy, new syntheses of (+/-)-methyl acorate (14b) and (+/-)-methyl epi-corate (15) are reported.

Polyphosphate esters containing ferrocene structures were synthesized from 1,1′-bis (p-hydroxyphenylamido) ferrocene and 1,1′-bis (p-hydroxyphenoxycarbonyl) ferrocene with aryl phosphorodichloridates by interfacial polycondensation using a phase transfer catalyst. The polymers were characterized by infrared, 1H-, 13C-, and 31-NMR spectroscopy. The molecular weights were determined by end group analysis using 31P-NMR spectral data. The thermal stability and fire retardancy were respectively determined by thermogravimetry and limiting oxygen index (LOI) measurements. The polyamide-phosphate esters showed better thermal stability and higher LOI values than the polyester-phosphate esters.

Two new hydrazinium complexes of manganese, (N2H5)3MnX5 (X = Cl and Br), have been prepared and characterized by analysis, infrared and visible spectra. The single crystal X-ray structure of the chloride complex has been determined. Only one of the three N2H+5 cations is coordinated to the metal. In the anion, [Mn(N2H5)Cl5]2-, the coordination polyhedron around the manganese atom is a slightly distorted octahedron.

Methanolic hydrogen chloride cyclization of the triketone 8, prepared from the Mannich base 7 and 2-methylcyclopentane-1,3-dione, gives ketones 9 and 10. NaBH4 reduction of 9 followed by Grignard reaction with CH3MgI affords the diol 12. Catalytic hydrogenation of 12 followed by PCC oxidation yields the ketoalcohol 13. Dehydration of 13 with SOCl2/pyridine results in a 1:1 mixture of the endo-14 and exo-15 olefins, separated by chromatography.

Grignard reaction followed by ozonolysis, or ozonolysis followed by Grignard reaction on the pentenoate 8, generates the diol 9. Cyclodehydration of 9 leads to the 3-oxacuparene (6), whereas PCC oxidation furnishes the 3-oxa-beta-cuparenone (7). Methanesulfonic acid-P2O5 transforms 7 into cyclopentenones 4, 5, known precursors to beta-cuparenone (3), and the naphthalenone 14.

Six metal complexes of Schiff bases involving Vitamin B6 and the decarboxylated amino acid histamine have been synthesised and characterized. Crystal structures have been determined for [CuL1(H2O)Br]-NO31(L1= pyridoxylidenehistamine) and [Cu2L22(NO3)2]·6H2O 2(L2= 5′-phosphopyridoxylidenehistaminate). The crystal structure of complex 1[space group P[1 with combining macron], a= 8.161(2), b= 10.368(2), c= 11.110(2)Å, α= 105.18(1), β= 102.12(1), γ= 72.10(1)° and Z= 2; R= 0.072, R′= 0.083] consists of square-pyramidally co-ordinated copper with the tridentate Schiff base in the zwitterionic form, whereas in 2[space group P[1 with combining macron], a= 8.727(1), b= 10.308(1), c= 12.845(2)Å, α= 110.00(1), β= 78.94(1), γ= 114.35(1)° and Z= 1; R= 0.035, R′= 0.034] the copper has the same co-ordination geometry but the tetradentate Schiff-base ligand exists as a monoanion. The conformational parameters deduced from such structures are important for understanding the stereochemical aspects of Vitamin B6-catalysed model reactions involving histidine.
