Lignin was graft copolymerized with methyl methacrylate using manganic pyrophosphate as initiator. This modified lignin was then blended (up to 50 wt%) with low density polyethylene (LDPE) using a small quantity of poly[ethylene-co-(glycidyl methacrylate)] (PEGMA) compatibilizer. The mechanical properties of the blend were substantially improved by using modified lignin in contrast to untreated lignin. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed loss of crystallinity of the LDPE phase owing to the interaction between the blend components. Thermogravimetric analysis showed higher thermal stability of modified lignin in the domain of blend processing. This suggested that there is scope for useful utilization of lignin, which could also lead to the development of eco-friendly products. (c) 2005 Society of Chemical Industry.

Ultrasonic degradation of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was carried out in several solvents and some mixtures of solvents. The time evolution of molecular weight distribution (MWD), determined by gel permeation chromatography, is analysed by continuous distribution kinetics. The rate coefficients for polymer degradation are determined for each solvent. The variation of rate coefficients is correlated with the vapour pressure of the solvent, kinematic viscosity of the solution and solvent-polymer interaction parameters. The vapour pressure and the kinematic viscosity of the solution are found to be more critical than other parameters (such as the Huggins and Flory-Huggins constants) in determining the degradation rates. Together with 106 farmers who started growing Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) in 20042006, this research sought to increase the knowledge around the real-life experience of Jatropha farming in the southern India states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Launched as an alternative for diesel in India, Jatropha has been promoted as a non-edible plant that could grow on poor soils, yield oil-rich seeds for production of bio-diesel, and not compete directly with food production. Through interviews with the farmers, information was gathered regarding their socio-economic situation, the implementation and performance of their Jatropha plantations, and their reasons for continuing or discontinuing Jatropha cultivation. Results reveal that 82% of the farmers had substituted former cropland for their Jatropha cultivation. By 2010, 85% (n = 90) of the farmers who cultivated Jatropha in 2004 had stopped. Cultivating the crop did not give the economic returns the farmers anticipated, mainly due to a lack of information about the crop and its maintenance during cultivation and due to water scarcity. A majority of the farmers irrigated and applied fertilizer, and even pesticides. Many problems experienced by the farmers were due to limited knowledge about cultivating Jatropha caused by poor planning and implementation of the national Jatropha program. Extension services, subsidies, and other support were not provided as promised. The farmers who continued cultivation had means of income other than Jatropha and held hopes of a future Jatropha market. The lack of market structures, such as purchase agreements and buyers, as well as a low retail price for the seeds, were frequently stated as barriers to Jatropha cultivation. For Jatropha biodiesel to perform well, efforts are needed to improve yield levels and stability through genetic improvements and drought tolerance, as well as agriculture extension services to support adoption of the crop. Government programs will -probably be more effective if implementing biodiesel production is conjoined with stimulating the demand for Jatropha biodiesel. To avoid food-biofuel competition, additional measures may be needed such as land-use restrictions for Jatropha producers and taxes on biofuels or biofuel feedstocks to improve the competitiveness of the food sector compared to the bioenergy sector. Poly{(N,N-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]-co-(methyl methacrylate)} copolymers of various compositions were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization at 70 degrees C in N,N-dimethylformamide. The polymer molecular weights and molecular weight distributions were obtained from size exclusion chromatography, and they indicated the controlled nature of the RAFT polymerizations; the polydispersity indices are in the range 1.11.3. The reactivity ratios of N,N-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) (rDMAEMA = 0.925 and rMMA = 0.854) were computed by the extended KelenTudos method at high conversions, using compositions obtained from 1H NMR. The pH- and temperature-sensitive behaviour were studied in aqueous solution to confirm dual responsiveness of these copolymers. The thermal properties of the copolymers with various compositions were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The kinetics of thermal degradation were determined by Friedmann and Chang techniques to evaluate various parameters such as the activation energy, the order and the frequency factor. A gliding arc discharge plasma and its characteristics are described. Analysis on the production principle of the plasma is presented. Some experimental results about two novel types of the gliding arc plasma generator were obtained. These types of gliding arc plasma are potentially used in chemical industry and environment engineering.

The measurement of void fraction is of importance to the oil industry and chemical industry. In this article, the principle and mathematical method of determining the void fraction of horizontal gas-liquid flow by using a single-energy gamma-ray system is described. The gamma-ray source is the radioactive isotope of Am-241 with gamma-ray energy of 59.5 keV. The time-averaged value of the void fraction in a 50.0-mm i.d. transparent horizontal pipeline is measured under various combinations of the liquid flow and gas flow. It is found that increasing the gas flow rate at a fixed liquid flow rate would increase the void fraction. Test data are compared with the predictions of the correlations and a good agreement is found. The result shows that the designed gamma-ray system can be used for measuring the void fraction in a horizontal gas-liquid two-phase flow with high accuracy.

[ES] Recientemente estudios previos han comenzado a plantear la posible relación entre el fenómeno de la internacionalización y responsabilidad social corporativa de las organizaciones. En este trabajo analizamos en qué medida la internacionalización contribuye a una mejora sustancial del desempeño social de las empresas. Usando una muestra de 102 empresas estadounidenses de los sectores químico, energético y de maquinaria industrial, nuestros resultados muestran que no todas las dimensiones de la internacionalización permiten a las empresas adquirir conocimiento valioso que conduzca a una mejora de su desempeño social. Concretamente, comprobamos que, mientras el porcentaje de ventas en mercados extranjeros y la diversificación internacional cultural favorecen la puesta en marcha de prácticas de responsabilidad social corporativa avanzadas que redundan en un mejor desempeño social (cumpliendo con las demandas sociales de los grupos de interés de los distintos mercados donde operan), la diversificación internacional geográfica no tiene efecto directo en el desempeño social de las empresas. Por tanto, no es tan importante el número de mercados donde la empresa actúa, sino el grado de diferenciación cultural existente entre los mismos lo que hace que la propia empresa mejore su desempeño social. El presente trabajo incluye implicaciones relevantes para el mundo académico, directivos y reguladores públicos.

[ES]Los sistemas Ciber-Físicos (Cyber-Physical Systems – CPS) son dispositivos que integran computación, control y comunicaciones. Actualmente se puede encontrar este tipo de sistemas en áreas tan diversas como la industria aeroespacial, automotriz, procesos químicos, infraestructura civil, etc. Entre las arquitecturas de comunicación empleadas en estos dispositivos, OPC UA se consolida como la más adecuada. OPC Unified Architecture es la nueva generación de tecnología propuesta por OPC Foundation para transmitir datos en bruto e información pre procesada entre los niveles de producción y los sistemas de planificación de producto de la empresa. Mediante OPC UA se puede disponer de toda la información deseada para cualquier aplicación y usuario autorizados, en cualquier instante y en cualquier lugar. En este proyecto se pretende desarrollar una arquitectura basada en OPC UA sobre CPSs para el acceso a datos de producción. Para ello se partirá de arquitecturas basadas en PC empotrados y redes de comunicación industriales.

Com o passar do tempo, a população mundial vem se conscientizando mais sobre problemas ambientais. Isso fez surgir uma demanda por tecnologias novas que possam se encaixar no cenário de sustentabilidade. Instabilidades frequentes no cenário político-econômico global acabam por elevar o preço do barril do petróleo. Assim a indústria química começa a buscar por alternativas que tenham a mesma versatilidade do petróleo. Dentre as opções de combustíveis renováveis, destaca-se o bio-óleo de pirólise. Seu interesse em estudos científicos vem do fato de poder-se utilizar do rejeito de processos como matéria prima, não necessitando competir por espaço com a plantação de alimentos. Sua composição pode ser representada por ácidos e fenóis. Em especial destacamos o ácido acético e fenóis oxigenados como m-cresol, o-cresol, p-cresol e guaiacol por estarem presentes em grandes quantidades. Sua separação das frações menos polares do bio-óleo pode ser realizada por meio de extração com água que é um reagente abundante e de baixo custo. O conhecimento das propriedades desses componentes puros é amplamente disponível na literatura, porém dados de composições das fases corrosivas, como misturas ternárias de água-ácido acético-m-cresol/o-cresol/p-cresol/guaiacol nas temperaturas de (298,15, 310,65 e 323,15) K são escassos. Devido a isso, o uso de modelos termodinâmicos para simulação do comportamento desses sistemas torna-se interessante. Todavia, quando são testadas as capacidades dos modelos clássicos, como o UNIFAC e NRTL, percebe-se que os mesmos não conseguem reproduzir o comportamento da binodal dos componentes corrosivos. Sendo assim, essa dissertação investigou soluções para melhorar a descrição desses sistemas, assim como obteve dados experimentais para tais sistemas de misturas ternárias de água-ácido acético-m-cresol/o-cresol/p-cresol/guaiacol nas temperaturas de (298,15, 310,65 e 323,15) K; desenvolveu-se uma metodologia para estimar parâmetros do modelo NRTL a partir de dados de composição da binodal e verificou-se a possibilidade de utilizar o modelo UNIFAC para prever o comportamento de equilíbrio de fases. Como resultado foram obtidos 314 novos dados experimentais, obtiveram-se parâmetros para o modelo NRTL que conseguem reproduzir com acurácia a forma da binodal com a metodologia proposta e verificou-se a necessidade de aperfeiçoamento no estudo do modelo UNIFAC para otimizar sua utilização na previsão do comportamento dos sistemas estudados

BACKGROUND: Carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber directly spun from an aerogel has a unique, well-aligned nanostructure (nano-pore and nano-brush), and thus provides high electro-catalytic activity and strong interaction with glucose oxidase enzyme. It shows great potential as a microelectrode for electrochemical biosensors. RESULTS: Cyclic voltammogram results indicate that post-synthesis treatments have great influence on the electrocatalytic activity of CNT fibers. Raman spectroscopy and electrical conductivity tests suggest that fibers annealed at 250 °C remove most of the impurities without damaging the graphite-like structure. This leads to a nano-porous morphology on the surface and the highest conductivity value (1.1 × 10 5 S m -1). Two CNT fiber microelectrode designs were applied to enhance their electron transfer behaviour, and it was found that a design using a 30 nm gold coating is able to linearly cover human physiological glucose level between 2 and 30 mmol L -1. The design also leads to a low detection limit of 25 μmol L -1. CONCLUSIONS: The high performance of CNT fibers not only offers exceptional mechanical and electrical properties, but also provides a large surface area and electron transfer pathway. They consequently make excellent bioactive microelectrodes for glucose biosensing, especially for potential use in implantable devices. © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry.
