Historia de la mágica relación entre un pequeño ruiseñor y un poderoso emperador, escrita originalmente por Hans Christian Andersen, en el siglo XIX. Hace muchos años, en China, el emperador se enamoró del dulce canto de un ruiseñor que habitaba en el maravilloso jardín de su bello palacio de porcelana. Hasta tal punto llegaba su admiración, que cuando dejó de oír el canto porque el ave había desaparecido, el emperador enfermó.

Morphology and bacterial colonisation of tooth/ceramic restoration interface after different cement excess removal techniques

Objectives: To evaluate the influence of different protocols for resin cement removal during cementation on biofilm formation.Methods: Twenty-eight ceramic blocks, which were injected under pressure, were placed over enamel blocks obtained from freshly extracted bovine incisors. The ceramic blocks were cemented to the enamel blocks using a dual-cured resin cement and the excess resin was removed according to the experimental group: TS: Teflon spatula; BR: brush; BR+: brush and polishing; SB+: scalpel blade and polishing. After autoclaving, the samples were colonised by incubation in a sucrose broth suspension standardised with Streptococcus mutans in microaerophilic stove. Specimens were quantitatively analysed for bacterial adherence at the adhesive interface using confocal laser scanning microscopy and counting the colony forming units, and qualitatively analysed using SEM. The roughness (Ra/Rz/RSm) was also analysed. Data were analysed by 1-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%).Results: The roughness values ranged from 0.96 to 1.69 mu m for Ra (p > 0.05), from 11.59 to 22.80 mu m for Rz (p = 0.02 < 0.05) and from 293.2 to 534.3 mu m for RSm (p = 0.00). Bacterial adhesion varied between 1,974,000 and 2,814,000 CFU/ml (p = 0.00). Biofilm mean thickness ranged from 0.477 and 0.556 mu m (p > 0.05), whilst the biovolume values were between 0.388 and 0.547 mu m(3)/mu m(2) (p = 0.04). Lower values for roughness, bacterial adhesion, biofilm thickness and biovolume were found with BR, whilst TS presented the highest values for most of the parameters. SEM images confirmed the quantitative values.Conclusions: The restoration margin morphology and interface roughness affects bacterial accumulation. The brush technique promoted less bacterial colonisation at the adhesive interface than did the other removal methods.Clinical significance: The brush technique seems to be a good option for removing the excess resin cement after adhesive cementation in clinical practice, as indicated by its better results with lower bacterial colonisation. Validação do monitor de medida de pressão arterial Omron HEM 742 em adolescentes

FUNDAMENTO: A medida precisa da pressão arterial é fundamental para a investigação científica ou decisão clínica. Nesse sentido, é importante verificar valores fornecidos por equipamentos eletrônicos. OBJETIVO: Validar o monitor Omron HEM 742 de medida de pressão arterial em adolescentes, segundo os critérios sugeridos pela British Hypertension Society. MÉTODOS: Participaram do estudo 150 adolescentes com idades entre 10 e 16 anos. O monitor automático Omron HEM 742 foi conectado em Y com equipamento auscultatório de coluna de mercúrio, e realizaram-se três avaliações simultâneas, calculando-se as diferenças entre os dois equipamentos. Para verificar a relação entre ambos, utilizaram-se o coeficiente de correlação intraclasse e a plotagem de Bland-Altman (concordância). A especificidade e a sensibilidade do aparelho foram determinadas pela curva ROC. RESULTADOS: A comparação entre as medidas acusou uma diferença menor ou igual a 5 mmHg em 67,3% dos valores sistólicos e 69,3% dos valores diastólicos; uma diferença menor ou igual a 10 mmHg ocorreu em 87,3% e 90,6% dos valores sistólicos e diastólicos, respectivamente; e uma diferença menor ou igual a 15 mmHg em 96,6% dos valores sistólicos e 97,3% dos diastólicos. Esses resultados indicam grau A segundo o protocolo da British Hypertension Society. Observou-se ainda elevada concordância nos valores obtidos por meio do monitor automático, e verificou-se que esse equipamento é capaz de identificar a presença ou a ausência da pressão arterial elevada. CONCLUSÃO: O monitor Omron HEM 742 mostrou-se válido para medidas de pressão arterial em adolescentes, conforme os critérios sugeridos pela British Hypertension Society.

Solar radiation over and under sea ice and photographic quantification of Ice algal aggregates during the POLARSTERN cruise ARK-XXVII/3 (IceArc) in summer 2012

The ice cover of the Arctic Ocean has been changing dramatically in the last decades and the consequences for the sea-ice associated ecosystem remain difficult to assess. Algal aggregates underneath sea ice have been described sporadically but the frequency and distribution of their occurrence is not well quantified. We used upward looking images obtained by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to derive estimates of ice algal aggregate biomass and to investigate their spatial distribution. During the IceArc expedition (ARK-XXVII/3) of RV Polarstern in late summer 2012, different types of algal aggregates were observed floating underneath various ice types in the Central Arctic basins. Our results show that the floe scale distribution of algal aggregates in late summer is very patchy and determined by the topography of the ice underside, with aggregates collecting in dome shaped structures and at the edges of pressure ridges. The buoyancy of the aggregates was also evident from analysis of the aggregate size distribution. Different approaches used to estimate aggregate biomass yield a wide range of results. This highlights that special care must be taken when upscaling observations and comparing results from surveys conducted using different methods or on different spatial scales.
