Endodontic 'Solutions'. Part 2:An audit comparing current practice in Belfast with UK and Republic of Ireland Dental Schools

Endodontic lubricants, irrigating solutions and medicaments help reduce the microbial load within root canals. Primary and secondary cases involve different microbes. Each'solution'or combinations thereof could play a significant role but no detailed guidelines exist on their use. An audit was undertaken to compare current practice in Belfast Dental School to the others across the UK and Republic of Ireland (ROI). This audit highlighted three main differences between Belfast and other dental schools. Many other institutions utilized other irrigants besides sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), different intracanal medicaments, including calcium hydroxide, and higher concentrations of NaOCl. Having gathered this information, we ask, 'Is there sufficient evidence to change the endodontic regime currently used at Belfast Dental School?'. Using the findings from the literature review (Part 1), we introduce new evidence-based protocols for primary and secondary cases for use in Belfast Dental School. Clinical Relevance: In the absence of detailed clinical guidelines on the use of endodontic lubricants, irrigants and medicaments in primary and secondary cases, it is important to be aware of current practice in UK and ROI dental schools where dentists and specialists are trained.

A análise e a aplicação de conceitos sobre o uso do Facebook, com vista ao aumento das audiências de um site noticioso, permitem tirar conclusões, quantitativas e qualitativas, sobre a problemática em questão. Como podem as publicações jornalísticas tirar melhor partido do Facebook? Deverá o jornalismo digital especializar-se na distribuição de notícias através das redes sociais? Quais as estratégias a aplicar para incrementar as audiências de um website através do Facebook como canal de distribuição? Neste contexto, pretendeu-se fazer uma análise sobre a forma como os meios de comunicação social estão a usar o Facebook para uma abordagem das melhores práticas jornalísticas nesta rede social. É nosso propósito examinar o papel das notícias no Facebook e a forma como os jornalistas se devem comportar, numa tentativa de criar regras para se tirar o melhor proveito do Facebook em função das audiências

Could concomitant radio-chemotherapy improve the outcomes of early-stage node negative anal canal cancer patients? A retrospective analysis of 122 patients.

One hundred twenty-two early-stage anal canal cancer patients (median age: 69 years) were treated with curative radiotherapy with (70 patients) or without (52 patients) concomitant chemotherapy. Median follow-up was 65 months (range: 4-238). At multivariate analysis, concomitant chemotherapy significantly improved local control (p = .007). Local control significantly influenced all considered endpoints, except the metastases free survival. The global rates of G3-G4 acute and late toxicity were 13.1% and 8.2%, respectively, and they were not increased by concomitant chemotherapy. Finally, concomitant chemotherapy is efficacious and safe in the treatment of T1-2N0 anal canal cancer patients and should be prospectively studied.

Resultate und ausser- gewöhnliche Komplikationen der Chirurgie der Gehörgangexostosen [Results and extraordinary complications of surgery for exostoses of the external auditory canal].

We present a retrospective study on 22 operations of exostosis of the external auditory canal in 20 patients. 8 patients were passionated by water sports. The most frequent indication for surgery (13 operations) was recurrent external otitis or ceruminal obstruction. In 7 cases the need for a wider access to the middle ear indicated surgery. Surgery was usually performed as an outpatient procedure, maximum hospitalization was 3 days. The mean healing period was 6 (3-10) weeks. Mean follow up was 43 (3-110) months. There were no severe intraoperative complications such as facial paresis, lesions of the ossicles or of the inner ear. As intraoperative complications we found 2 perforations of the tympanic membrane, 2 expositions of the capsule of the mandibular joint, one of which was followed by chronic pain. As postoperative complications we found an early soft tissue stenosis of the external auditory canal and one late soft tissue stenosis which recurred after revision surgery. No recurrence of exostosis was seen. We describe an up to now unknown complication: the appearance of bilateral petrositis caused by staphylococcus epidermidis after bilateral surgery in an otherwise healthy patient. This study confirms that severe complications are rare, minor ones however relatively common. And that also minor complications may have a troublesome follow. Therefore and because of the potential of severe complications indication for surgery must be made cautiously and risks of the operation must not be underestimated.

An Act to authorise the stock held by private parties in the Welland Canal to be purchased on behalf of the Province [Welland Canal Stock Bill], 1841

The bill is a proposal by the government to purchase Welland Canal stock held in private hands. The bill was read for the first time on Wednesday 4 August, 1841, and received second reading on 10th August, 1841. One hundred and fifty copies were printed of the bill. This example was addressed to Samuel Street at the Falls of Niagara, by William Hamilton Merritt, September 1841.
