Russian Karelians were one of the small peasant nations of the Russian Empire that began to identify themselves as nations during the late imperial period. At that historical moment Russian Karelia fell between an economically undeveloped empire and the rapidly modernizing borderland of Finland. The economic and cultural lure of Finland drew Karelians into the Finnish camp. This attraction was seen as a challenge to Russia and influenced the straggle between Russia and Finland for the Karelians. This struggle was waged from 1905 to 1917. This work is focused on the beginning stage of the struggle, its various phases, and their results. The confrontation extended into different dimensions (economic, political, ideological, church and cultural politics) and occurred on two levels: central and regional. Countermeasures against local nationalisms developed much earlier both in Russia and in other empires for use were also used in the Russian Karelian case. Economic policies were deployed to try to make relations with Russia more alluring for Karelians and to improve their economic condition. However, these efforts produced only minimal results due to the economic weakness of the empire and a lack of finances. Fear of the economic integration of the Karelians and Finns, which would have stimulated the economy of the Karelia, also hindered these attempts. The further development of the Orthodox Church, the schools and the zemstvos in Karelia yielded fewer results than expected due to the economic underdevelopment of the region and the avoidance of the Finnish language. Policizing measures were the most successfull, as all activities in Russian Karelia by the Finns were entirely halted in practice. However, the aspiration of Russian Karelians to integrate their home districts with Finland remained a latent force that just waited for an opportunity to push to the surface again. Such a chance materialized with the Russian revolution. The Karelian question was also a part of Russian domestic political confrontation. At the and of the 1800s, the Russian nationalist right had grown strong and increasingly gained the favor of the autocracy. The right political forces exploited the Karelian question in its anti-Finnish ideology and in its general resistance to the national emancipation of the minority peoples of Russia. A separate ideology was developed, focusing on the closeness of Karelians to the "great Russian people." Simultaneously, this concept found a place in the ultramonarchist myth of the particularly close connection between the people and tsar that was prominent in the era of Nicholas II. This myth assigned the Karelians a place amongst the "simple people" faithful to the tsar.

We determined the quantity and chemical composition of cuticular hydrocarbons of different strains, sex and age of buffalo flies, Haematobia exigua. The quantity of cuticular hydrocarbons increased from less than 1 µg/fly for newly-emerged flies to over 11 µg/fly in 13 d-old flies. The hydrocarbon chain length varied from C21 to C29, with unbranched alkanes and monounsaturated alkenes the major components. Newly emerged flies produced almost exclusively C27 hydrocarbons. Increasing age was accompanied by the appearance of hydrocarbons with shorter carbon chains and an increase in the proportion of alkenes. 11 Tricosene and 7-tricosene were the most abundant hydrocarbons in mature buffalo flies. Cuticular hydrocarbons of buffalo flies are distinctly different from those of horn flies. The most noticeable differences were in the C23 alkenes, with the major isomers 11- and 7-tricosene in buffalo flies and (Z)-9- and (Z)-5-tricosene in horn flies, respectively. Cuticular hydrocarbon analysis provides a reliable method to differentiate buffalo and horn fly, which are difficult to separate morphologically. The differences in cuticular hydrocarbons also support their recognition as separate species, H. exigua and H. irritans, rather than as subspecies.

In bovines characterization of biochemical and molecular determinants of the dominant follicle before and during different time intervals after gonadotrophin surge requires precise identification of the dominant follicle from a follicular wave. The objectives of the present study were to standardize an experimental model in buffalo cows for accurately identifying the dominant follicle of the first wave of follicular growth and characterize changes in follicular fluid hormone concentrations as well as expression patterns of various genes associated with the process of ovulation. From the day of estrus (day 0), animals were subjected to blood sampling and ultrasonography for monitoring circulating progesterone levels and follicular growth. On day 7 of the cycle, animals were administered a PGF2α analogue (Tiaprost Trometamol, 750 μg i.m.) followed by an injection of hCG (2000 IU i.m.) 36 h later. Circulating progesterone levels progressively increased from day 1 of the cycle to 2.26 ± 0.17 ng/ml on day 7 of the cycle, but declined significantly after PGF2α injection. A progressive increase in the size of the dominant follicle was observed by ultrasonography. The follicular fluid estradiol and progesterone concentrations in the dominant follicle were 600 ± 16.7 and 38 ± 7.6 ng/ml, respectively, before hCG injection and the concentration of estradiol decreased to 125.8 ± 25.26 ng/ml, but concentration of progesterone increased to 195 ± 24.6 ng/ml, 24 h post-hCG injection. Inh-α and Cyp19A1 expressions in granulosa cells were maximal in the dominant follicle and declined in response to hCG treatment. Progesterone receptor, oxytocin and cycloxygenase-2 expressions in granulosa cells, regarded as markers of ovulation, were maximal at 24 h post-hCG. The expressions of genes belonging to the super family of proteases were also examined; Cathepsin L expression decreased, while ADAMTS 3 and 5 expressions increased 24 h post-hCG treatment. The results of the current study indicate that sequential treatments of PGF2α and hCG during early estrous cycle in the buffalo cow leads to follicular growth that culminates in ovulation. The model system reported in the present study would be valuable for examining temporo-spatial changes in the periovulatory follicle immediately before and after the onset of gonadotrophin surge.

Vuoden 1917 maaliskuun vallankumous kaatoi tsaarinvallan Venäjällä ja synnytti autonomiseen Suomeen järjestysvaltatyhjiön. Sortuneen venäläisen järjestysvaltakoneiston tilalle muodostettiin suomalaisvoimin kunnallisia miliisilaitoksia yhteiskuntarauhaa turvaamaan. Tutkielmassa tarkennetaan ja havainnollistetaan aiemman kirjallisuuden kuvaa Helsingin miliisilaitoksen käytännön toiminnasta muistitietoon sekä Helsingin poliisilaitoksen arkiston aineistoihin tukeutuen. Erityisesti syvennytään kuitenkin Helsingin miliisilaitoksen palvelukseen joukolla hakeutuneisiin ylioppilaisiin.

Spontaneous mutation: discovered in February 2001 as a superior plant growing among “Common” buffalo grass growing on the breeder’s property at Saltash in the Hunter Valley (NSW). The selected material has smaller (finer) leaves and showed better growth and colour than the parent variety with minimal inputs (water, fertiliser) under stressful climatic conditions. Subsequently, it also showed better leaf colour retention than the parent variety during winter. A vegetative plug taken from the original plant has now undergone four subsequent vegetative divisions to expand the original material for performance trials in NSW and Queensland without showing any discernible off types. Main selection criteria: winter colour retention, small leaves, low fertiliser requirement. Propagation: vegetative. Breeder: Brent Redman, Maitland North, NSW. PBR Certificate Number 2715, Application Number 2002/283, granted 18 March 2005.

‘TF01’ was selected by the breeder, John Powell, as an isolated and distinctive plant of buffalo grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) growing among kikuyu grass on the banks of the Bellinger River along its tidal reaches where it was occasionally inundated by brackish water during king tides. It showed shorter internodes than existing buffalo grass varieties of comparable texture within the breeder’s knowledge, and showed good colour retention during periods of drought. Initially designated ‘TF01’, the buffalo grass cultivar was trialled for turf adaptation by Turf Force on their Beaudesert turf farm and characterised in a national buffalo grass project coordinated by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries Turf Research group initiated in 2005. PBR Certificate Number 3624, Application Number 2007/245, granted 25 September 2008.
