Observations of Joints Present in the Lawton Clay Member of the Vashon Stade, Exposed at a Coastal Bluff in Discovery Park, Seattle, Washington

The southwest-facing coastal bluff present at Discovery Park, Seattle, Washington, displays distinctive joints throughout the exposed Lawton Clay Member. Exhibiting a characteristic local stratigraphy of permeable advance outwash over the impermeable proglacial lacustrine clay, this bluff is located in an area of Seattle at high risk from landslides. This project addressed the relationship between the joints observed at this coastal bluff and the coherency of the bluff as a whole, through remote sensing and field measurements. Aerial drone photography taken of the bluff was processed through a photogrammetry software to produce a 3-dimensional Structure from Motion model, allowing for a digital manipulation and broad examination of the bluff not possible by foot. Stereonet plots produced from these measurements provided insight into patterns of varying joint strike along a horizontal transect of the observed bluff face. Taken together, these two visualizations provided a better picture of the possible chicken-and-egg interaction of the joints and bluff topography; they demonstrated the likelihood that the joint formation at the bluff was most likely to be primarily influenced by the local topography of the bluff over other sources of possible tensional stress in the immediate area.

The Torrent : Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley, 10 January 2011

Of all the stories to emerge from Queensland’s catastrophic summer of 2011, the most dramatic and starkly tragic were those that took place in Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley. Amanda Gearing Queensland Flood Collection 2011-2012

A collection of oral history recordings, photographs, hand drawn maps, videos and speech notes relating to the 2011 Queensland floods and the major flood event that occurred in Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley region on 10 January 2011: a flash flood (described as an 'inland tsunami') which devastatingly took 21 human lives. The collection, amassed by Toowoomba-based journalist Amanda Gearing for her Master of Arts degree, includes 86 oral history recordings of flood survivors and rescuers in Spring Bluff, Murphys Creek, Toowoomba, Withcott, Postmans Ridge, Helidon, Carpendale and Grantham as well as digital photographs and videos taken by a number of those interviewed including those taken by Amanda Gearing and other locals. The interviews are very personal and powerful recollections of the experience of the flood event. Some recall feelings of fear and despair and tell of trauma and loss which continues well after the flood event. All are stories of resilience and hope, of rebuilding lives, of lessons learnt, and recommendations in order to avoid the same devastating results in future disasters.

OHS Regulation for a Changing World of Work

This volume assesses the legacy of the Robens Report, the intellectual foundation of modern OHS law and practice in Australia and many other countries, following the Report’s 30th anniversary. The authors confront the challenges facing OHS regulators and stakeholders in a new and different world dominated by service industries and globalisation rather than manufacturing industries and protection. They explore new models of OHS regulation that take account of gaps and deficiencies in the current arrangements.
