Pond culture trials of Lates calcarifer (Bloch) were initiated in the ponds of Kharland Research Station, Panvel, from 1985 up to 1989 by adopting varying methods of inputs of commonly available organic substances comprising de-oiled cake of groundnut, rice bran and raw cattle dung. Although provision of zooplankton generated under phased fertilisation technique resulted in considerable yield level, subsequent trials in combination with direct feed methods gave higher yield. Trials during 1990-91 adopting similar feed input techniques were continued but by stocking the seed of both Lates and Oreochromis mossambicus with yield percentage around 72.23 for Lates and 27.73 for Oreochromis. Trials were further continued during next three years. In relation to the organic input levels the yields rate for seven months period was in the range of 119.4 kg/ha to 250.4 kg/ha for Lates. In case of Oreochromis the yield rate varied between 28.5 to 153.32 kg/ha indicating the influence of differential stocking rates and size of the seed of two species.

Asian seabass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch) - a catadromous centropomid perch, is a good candidate species for brackishwater aquaculture in India. The length-weight relationship and the relative condition of L. calcarifer were assessed under culture condition. The length of the fish samples ranged from 25 to 240 mm and the relative condition (w sub(r)) of the fish for different length groups ranged from 99.54 to 104.39, indicating the good condition of the fish. The regression analysis of log-transformed length-weight data was carried out and the 'b' coefficient indicates the good condition of fish showing an isometric growth in the juvenile phase under culture condition.

Experiments on the study of different dietary levels of vitamin E on the growth and breeding performance of Heteropneustes fossilis brood fish were carried out in two phases. The first phase consisted of studying its ovarian development and the second phase on breeding performance. Sixty female fishes were stocked in twelve experimental chambers of a raceway. The effects of four dietary vitamin E levels viz. 0 (served as control), 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg feed, on the somatic growth, ovarian development of brood fish and on their breeding performance were studied. Each treatment had three replications. It was observed that body growth in terms of length and weight was best with 0 mg vitamin E/kg feed and 200 mg vitamin E/kg of feed gave poorest result. The gonado-somatic index and fecundity, however, was highest in the fish fed with 100 mg vitamin E/kg of feed. In case of breeding performance such as ovulation rate, fertilization rate, hatching rate and survival rate, the best result was obtained with 200 mg vitamin E/kg of feed. The overall result of this experiment indicates that 200 mg vitamin E/kg of feed is the best vitamin E dose for H fossilis brood and vitamin E content has a positive impact on ovarian development.

Pathogenicity of Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria was tested on the stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis. Before artificial infection the morphological, biochemical and physiological characters of Aeromonas hydrophila were studied. The infections were done by two different methods, viz., intramuscular (IM) and intraperitoneal (IP) injection. In infection experiment, each group of 10 fish were injected either intramuscularly or intra peritoneally with one dose higher than the LD50 dose (9.6 x 107 CFU/fish). All the fish tested died within 1 to 9 days. Both in cases of intramuscular and intraperitoneal injection, external pathology were found. Haemorrhagic lesions were evident at the site of injection. The posterior end of the body surface was found to develop greyish-white lesion that was extended up to caudal fin. Hyperemic anal region and the fin bases were also observed. Total bacterial loads in liver, kidney and intestine were determined. Aeromonas hydrophila could be isolated from liver, kidney and intestine of the experimentally infected fish. In case of intramuscular injection the highest and the lowest bacterial load was found to be 2.4 x 107 CFU/g of liver and 2.1 x 102 CFU/g of kidney and in case of intraperitoneal injection they were found to be 3.6 x 106 CFU/g of kidney and 1.2 x 104 CFU/g of kidney respectively. It was concluded that A. hydrophila could cause serious disease condition to Heteropneustes fossilis and its pathogenesis in the fish was also very efficient.

Climbing perch locally known as koi (Anabas testudineus) is a popular food fish in our country. Thai climbing perch was introduced in Bangladesh from Thailand. To explore the variation in growth performance and orphological features of local and Thai climbing perch a study was undertaken. The highest gain in length, weight and SGR were found in Thai koi 12.23±0.38 cm, 55.83±0.53 g and 7.92±0.11 %/day respectively. Fourteen morphometric characters were studied where eleven (TL, SL, HL, HBD, LBD, DFL, PECFL, PELFL, AFL, UJL and LJL) showed significant difference (p<0.01) in Thai koi from the local ones. Of the meristic characters no. of dorsal fin rays (hard), anal fin rays (hard), caudal fin rays and scale along lateral line (upper and lower) as recorded from the Thai koi were significantly higher (p<0.01) than that of the local koi. The no. of dorsal fin rays (soft) in Thai koi were also significantly higher (p<0.05) from that of local koi. The number of vertebra were also variable in local and Thai climbing perch (25 in case of local koi and 26 in case of Thai koi). Hence, the results obtained form the present study satisfy the characteristics of A. testudineus which reveals that both the local and Thai koi belongs to the same species. Growth performance of Thai koi was better compared to local koi reared in same conditions.

An on-farm trial was undertaken in nine earthen ponds (400 to 640m2) to evaluate the growth and production potentials of climbing perch, Thai koi (Anabas testudineus) for the period of four months from March through June 2006. Three stocking densities such as 75,000 (T1), 100,500 (T2) and 125,000/ha (T3) were tested with three replications. Fish were fed with commercial (SABINCO) pelleted feed (35% crude protein). Fish productions obtained in three treatments such as T1, T2 and T3 were 6,480±217, 6,384±154, 6,617±187 kg· 1ha, respectively. The results demonstrated higher mean growth in T1 than in T2 and T3. However, the net benefit was achieved Tk. 7,26,975 from T1, where the stocking density was 75,000/ha.

Five hormone doses viz. 25, 50, 75, 100, and 125 mg of carp PG/kg of body weight of the recipient fish were tested and they were designated as T1 T2, T3, T4, and T5 respectively. Significantly higher fertilization (98%) and hatching rates (38%) were obtained from T3 (75 mg of carp PG extract/kg body weight). While T4 (100 mg of carp PG extract/kg body weight) and T5 (125 mg of carp PG extract/kg body weight) gave the highest (90%) ovulation rate. In June and July the highest fertilization rate of 96 and 96.4% respectively and hatching rate 42.5 and 48.7% respectively were obtained. In over all consideration carp PG extract at a dose of 75 mg/kg body weight appears to be the suitable dose for induced breeding of H. fossilis and June and July are the suitable time for its induced breeding.

Effect of anaesthetization with benzocaine at the rate of 18.0 mg.1super(-1) on juveniles of Channa punctatus was observed using a cylindrical glass respirometer. Oxygen consumption and opercular movement were studied at 3h and 24h of anaesthetization. The oxygen consumption of control fish increased linearly from 0.183±0.029 to 0.481±0.034 mlO sub(2).h super(-1) with an increase in body weight from 1.45±0.18 to 6.12±0.11g and showed a reduction (p<0.001) of about 41% in 3h and 37% in 24h anaesthetization of Benzocaine. Similarly, the opercular movement of control fish ranging between 46±1 to 49±1min super(-1) came down to show a reduction (p<0.001) of 43% and 38% respectively in 3h and 24h anaesthetization. The information is useful in calculation of oxygen requirement of this species for live transportation and other experimental purpose.

The absolute fecundity of Saurida tumbil ranged between 24160 to 172000 eggs with weight range of 230-670 g. Linear relationship between fecundity and weight was more valid than that of length and ovary weight. The fish breed once a year during November to March. The length at which 50% of the females mature was calculated as 296 mm. The female dominated the commercial catch and overall male to female ratio of population was 1:1.62 throughout the year.

A study of the distribution of some chemical constituents in the musculature of Channa punctatus Bloch showed it to be fairly heterogeneous. The increase in the levels of protein, fat, ash, total carbohydrates, glycogen, RNA, DNA and cholesterol towards the posterior region of the fillet was the result of increase in the number of cells per unit weight of the sample and in the concentration of myocommata. The distribution of water in the musculature was inversely related to that of the fat. The concentration of protein appeared to be associated with the RNA level. The posterior region of the fillet exhibited more calorific value than the anterior region.

The quantitative distribution pattern of fat, moisture, protein and ash has been studied in the muscle of the various zones corresponding to the dorsal and ventral regions of the body of a common cat fish, H. fossilis (Bloch). The ventral part of the body showed more accumulation of fat and ash than the dorsal part, while this dorso-ventral gradation was not marked in the case of protein content. All the four constituents also showed an increase from the anterior to the posterior zones, both in the ventral as well as dorsal regions of the body. The distribution of moisture followed an almost opposite pattern, indicating an inverse relationship with fat and ash contents.

Homogenates of tissues have been analysed for the presence of 5'-nucleotidase activity. Sexes are not treated individually since no significant differences were observed. All organs showed marked activity, the highest being in the cardiac tissues, then the kidney, spleen, brain, and low values in the liver and muscles. Comparison with data from other fish studied shows a marked difference between O. striatus and O. punctatus.
