Objetivo Como não há na literatura informações sobre o perfil de consumo alcoólico entre desportistas, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o perfil de consumo alcoólico por frequentadores de academia de ginástica associando com a antropometria e a intensidade do treino. Métodos Foram convidados a participar do estudo indivíduos praticantes de musculação, por no mínimo seis meses, com idade entre 20 e 40 anos, de ambos os sexos. Foram realizadas medidas antropométricas e de composição corporal. Para avaliação do consumo alcoólico, utilizou-se o questionário AUDIT (The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test). A intensidade do treino foi identificada por meio de um questionário semiestruturado. Resultados Dos participantes, 74,1% (n = 35) disseram ter feito uso de álcool. Além disso, 19 voluntários (38,8%) apresentaram comportamento de risco para o consumo de álcool (AUDIT ≥ 8). Considerando o consumo alcoólico em binge, 32 voluntários (65,3%) consumiram seis ou mais doses de álcool em alguma ocasião no ano anterior, não havendo diferença entre os sexos. A adiposidade corporal estava acima dos valores recomendados entre os que relataram consumo em binge. Não houve associação entre a intensidade do treinamento físico e o consumo de álcool em binge, nem entre a intensidade do treinamento e o comportamento de risco para o consumo de álcool. Conclusão A maioria dos desportistas apresentou consumo de bebidas alcoólicas no padrão binge, não sendo associado à intensidade do treinamento. Este não condiz com os seus objetivos ao frequentar academias de ginástica. A adiposidade corporal estava acima dos valores recomendados.

Objetivo Embora existam programas efetivos para tratamento da obesidade, são grandes as taxas de abandono. O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar o estágio motivacional em que se encontravam pacientes com sobrepeso ou obesidade I e II atendidos em ambulatório de Nutrição e seus fatores associados. Métodos Trata-se de um estudo transversal, com amostragem por conveniência, em que foram coletadas informações da história clínica, antropometria, compulsão alimentar (BES – Binge Eating Scale) e motivação para o tratamento (URICA – University of Rhode Island Change Assessment Scale). Resultados Dos 48 avaliados, 29,2% encontravam-se em pré-contemplação, 41,7%, em contemplação e 29,2%, em ação. Quem procurou tratamento para controle de alguma comorbidade além da perda de peso teve maior escore de prontidão (p = 0,024). Motivação não foi relacionada ao estado nutricional nem à tentativa anterior de perda de peso, mas relacionou-se à orientação profissional anterior (p = 0,005). Dos 26,8% que apresentavam sintomatologia moderada ou grave para compulsão alimentar, 90,9% estavam em contemplação, com diferença significativa quanto à pré-contemplação (p = 0,001) e à ação (p = 0,02). Conclusão Esses resultados sugerem que parte dos indivíduos que procuram tratamento para perda de peso não o faz com a motivação necessária e que, se o aconselhamento profissional quanto à importância da perda de peso ocorresse antes que patologias associadas à obesidade se instalassem, indivíduos mais motivados poderiam procurar tratamento e evitar tais complicações.

Identificación y caracterización del problema objeto de estudio: Diversas investigaciones señalan que el uso o consumo de alcohol comienza durante la adolescencia. En este periodo del desarrollo típicamente se han reportado deterioros asociados con el consumo de alcohol sobre diversas funciones cognitivas. Sin embargo, los hallazgos no siempre han sido concluyentes. Hipótesis: a) Existe una mayor cantidad de déficits neuropsicológicos (especialmente en los dominios asociados con la toma de decisiones) en los grupos de adolescentes que presentan patrones de consumo elevados o tipo binge y en los adolescentes bajo tratamiento; b) Existen sesgos cognitivos de tipo implícito en los adolescentes expuestos a publicidades referidas a bebidas alcohólicas; y c) Existe mayor presencia de expectativas negativas en el grupo conformado por niños, así como una mayor presencia de expectativas positivas en el grupo conformado por adolescentes. Planteo de Objetivos: se pretende lograr un perfil neuropsicológico de adolescentes de ambos sexos en función de patrones de consumo de alcohol bien diferenciados. Asimismo, se intentará determinar la presencia de sesgos cognitivos hacia estímulos asociados con el alcohol en función de las expectativas hacia el psicotrópico y el tipo de consumo del mismo que presenta la población bajo estudio. Finalmente, se buscará determinar si existen cambios evolutivos en las expectativas hacia el alcohol que pudieran indicar la presencia de mayor vulnerabilidad al consumo de alcohol. Materiales y métodos a utilizar: Se utilizarán pruebas neuropsicológicas (IGT, WCST, otras) y cognitivas (AEQ o similares). Se apelará al uso de diseños ex post facto prospectivos de tipo simple o factoriales, diseños factoriales, estudios instrumentales y estudios descriptivos de poblaciones mediante encuestas. Resultados esperados: 1) Se espera encontrar una mayor cantidad de déficits neuropsicológicos (especialmente en los dominios asociados con la toma de decisiones) en los grupos de adolescentes con patrones de consumo de alcohol elevados y binge, así como en el grupo de adolescentes bajo tratamiento. 2) Se espera encontrar la presencia de sesgos cognitivos implícitos en aquellos adolescentes expuestos a publicidades referidas a bebidas alcohólicas en contraposición a los adolescentes expuestos a publicidades de bebidas no-alcohólicas. 3) Se espera encontrar una mayor presencia de expectativas negativas en el grupo conformado por niños, y una mayor presencia de expectativas positivas en el grupo conformado por adolescentes, con lo que se verificaría el supuesto que señala que las EA se modifican a lo largo del desarrollo. Asimismo, se espera confirmar que las EA cambian en función de la experiencia de consumo de alcohol. Importancia del proyecto: En el ámbito local no se han realizado estudios sistemáticos de esta naturaleza, la información que se obtenga permitirá evaluar el impacto del uso y abuso de alcohol durante la adolescencia así como diseñar y ejecutar mejores estrategias de prevención y de rehabilitación y, al mismo tiempo, facilitará la toma de decisiones en el campo de la planificación de políticas sanitarias dirigidas a los adolescentes.

BACKGROUND: High volumes of alcohol consumption and risky single occasion drinking (RSOD) among university students have been shown to be associated with considerable harm to both those who consume alcohol and their fellow students. The vast majority of these studies are based on US and Canadian samples. AIM: The present article provides an overview of the characteristics of alcohol-consuming university students in Europe. METHOD: 65 relevant articles published within the last 20years using European student populations could be identified. RESULTS: Sociodemographic, individual, social, and university-related characteristics associated with alcohol consumption patterns could be identified. Male students, in particular, tended to consume alcohol more often and in higher quantities, including RSOD. Students consumed alcohol chiefly during social gatherings and for social and enhancement motives. Those without family obligations and those living alone, with roommates or in areas with a high density of students were more likely to consume alcohol in higher quantities, and to engage in RSOD. Students tend to overestimate the extent of their fellow students' alcohol consumption. CONCLUSIONS: Health promotion and prevention efforts which focus on these characteristics (i.e., gender, drinking motives, living conditions and social norms), and which have been successful and evaluated among university students in the US and Canada, may also be very promising for their European counterparts.

Early consumption of full servings of alcohol and early experience of drunkenness have been linked with alcohol-related harmful effects in adolescence, as well as adult health and social problems. On the basis of secondary analysis of county-level prevalence data, the present study explored the current pattern of drinking and drunkenness among 15- and 16-year-old adolescents in 40 European and North American countries. Data from the 2006 Health Behavior in School Children survey and the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and other Drugs were used. The potential role of alcohol control and policy measures in explaining variance in drinking patterns across countries was also examined. Policy measures and data on adult consumption patterns were taken from the WHO Global Information System on Alcohol and Health, Eurostat and the indicator of alcohol control policy strength developed by Brand DA, Saisana M, Rynn LA et al. [(2007) Comparative analysis of alcohol control policies in 30 countries. PLoS Med 4:e151.]. We found that a non-significant trend existed whereby higher prices and stronger alcohol controls were associated with a lower proportion of weekly drinking but a higher proportion of drunkenness. It is important that future research explores the causal relationships between alcohol policy measures and alcohol consumption patterns to determine whether strict policies do in fact have any beneficial effect on drinking patterns, or rather, lead to rebellion and an increased prevalence of binge drinking.

As 'fresher's week' commences, the Public Health Agency is encouraging students across Northern Ireland to avoid binge drinking and to know their limits if they do choose to drink alcohol.Enjoying new freedoms, at college or university, means taking care of yourself and others and, if you choose to drink, staying within safe alcohol limits. Owen O'Neill, PHA Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement Manager for drugs and alcohol, said: "Some young people may drink more when they leave home, or join their friends in college or university for the first time. They might think that, as young people, they don't have to take care with alcohol, but staying within the safe drinking limits is important for everyone who drinks. Excessive and binge drinking can have lasting effects on health, such as damage to the liver, heart, brain and stomach. Drinking too much can also increase the risk of accidents and antisocial behaviour as well as sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancy"."We would also strongly advise against drinking games. Although they are regarded as a 'bit of fun', in reality they can be very dangerous. As an extreme form of binge drinking, where large quantities of alcohol are consumed in a very short time, drinking games can result in alcohol poisoning, leading to brain damage, coma or death. Recent health figures show that 20% of adults surveyed admitted to drinking over the weekly alcohol limits (1)so the Public Health Agency is using Alcohol Awareness Week (14-20th November) to reinforce the importance of drinking sensibly and staying within safe alcohol limits.Government guidelines on safe drinking are 21 units per week for males and 14 units per week for females. Staying within these limits is important as excessive and binge drinking can lead, in the short term, to increased risk of accidents, antisocial behaviour, impact on relationships, unplanned pregnancy. QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY: the main purpose of this longitudinal study was to determine the impact of risky single occasion drinking (RSOD) frequency on alcohol dependence and drinking consequences reported 15 months later. METHODS: As a baseline sample, 5,990 young men were assessed on their drinking habits including the frequency of RSOD. Of them, 5,196 were reassessed at follow-up 15 months later on RSOD frequency, alcohol dependence and alcohol related consequences in thze interceding year. Drop out biases were investigated. RESULTS: Around 45% of the baseline participants reported regular RSOD (every month or more frequently). Despite the fact that RSOD distribution was generally stable during the initial sample, 47.4% reported a variation of their RSOD frequency 15 months later. Around 25% of the sample reported reduced RSOD frequency. Nonetheless, occasional RS drinkers were more likely to become regular (monthly) RSO drinkers at follow up. Daily and weekly RSOD were associated with high proportions of alcohol dependence and detrimental consequences of drinking. Surprisingly, abstainers at baseline were more likely to be at risk of alcohol dependence and consequences at follow up than non-RSO drinkers. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the fact that alcohol abstinence is logically the best way to avoid the detrimental consequences of alcohol drinking, abstainers at baseline reported as many problems due to alcohol use at follow up as occasional or monthly RSO drinkers. The few participants who had become RSO drinkers during the follow up period were indeed likely to engage in detrimental behaviour. Non-RSO drinkers had the fewest problems due to alcohol use. This substantiates the early occurrence of drinking consequences among inexperienced RSO drinkers.

The prevalence of unhealthy drinking at all levels in Irish society poses serious issues in terms of the consequence to individuals concerned, as well as to society as a whole. The workplace offers a useful setting for early identification and intervention with new employees who may have pre-existing alcohol use disorder issues. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness within the workplace of a brief Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) intervention in reducing participants binge and risky drinking behaviours. Twenty-six Irish Naval recruits volunteered to participate in this randomised controlled trial. The intervention was conducted over four consecutive one and a half hour weekly sessions. Participants completed four principle outcome measures at intake, termination of the intervention and at the two-month follow-up assessment. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (Babor, Higginis-Biddle, Saunders & Monterio, 2001) was used to measures participants’ consumption levels and frequency of binge or risky drinking. A Readiness Ruler (Miller, Zweben, Diclemente, & Rychtarik, 1992) was used to measure participants’ readiness to change drinking, while the Drinking Expectancy Questionnaire (Young & Oei, 1996) was used to measure participants’ beliefs pertaining to alcohol, and their ability to refuse alcohol in high-risk social surroundings. There were preliminary data in support of the intervention. There were interaction effects that approached statistical significance for both a reduction in participants’ binge drinking (p =. 064) and an increase in participants’ ability to refuse alcohol in high-risk social settings (p = .059). Alcohol is responsible for a significant portion of the global burden of disease. There is widespread concern reported in the media and other sources about drinking trends among young people, particularly heavy episodic or “binge” drinking. Prominent among policy responses, in the UK and elsewhere, have been attempts to manage antisocial behaviour related to intoxication in public spaces. Much less attention has been given to the longer term effects of excessive drinking in adolescence on later adult health and well-being. Some studies suggest that individuals “mature out” of late adolescent drinking behaviour, whilst others identify enduring effects on drinking and broader health and social outcomes in adulthood. If adolescent drinking does not cause later difficulties in adulthood then intervention approaches aimed at addressing the acute consequences of alcohol, such as unintentional injuries and anti-social behaviour, may be the most appropriate solution. If causal relationships do exist, however, this approach will not address the cumulative harms produced by alcohol, unless such intervention successfully modifies the long-term relationship with alcohol, which seems unlikely. To address this issue a systematic review of cohort studies was conducted, as this approach provides the strongest observational study design to evaluate evidence for causal inference.This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

These synthetic estimates were produced as part of a research project to test and produce area-level estimates of healthy lifestyle behaviours, which was carried out at the National Centre for Social Research. The estimates were produced in response to the twin requirements to develop small area estimates for Neighbourhood Statistics and to meet local public health information needs. Synthetic estimates with 95% Confidence Intervals (1) have been prepared using 2000-2002 data from the Health Survey for England, the 2001 Census and other information, at the 2003 Census Area Statistics (CAS) ward and Primary Care Organisation (PCO)(2) geographic level for the following variables: Prevalence of current smoking (at the time the data was collected); Obesity of adults; Binge drinking for adults; Consumption of 5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day (adults); Consumption of 3 or more portions of fruit and vegetables day (children).

BACKGROUND: Questions remain about how brief motivational interventions (BMIs) for unhealthy alcohol use work, and addressing these questions may be important for improving their efficacy. Therefore, we assessed the effects of various characteristics of BMIs on drinking outcomes across 3 randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: Audio recordings of 314 BMIs were coded. We used the global rating scales of the Motivational Interviewing Skills Code (MISC) 2.1: counselor's acceptance, empathy, and motivational interviewing (MI) spirit, and patient's self-exploration were rated. MI proficiency was defined as counselor's rating scale scores ≥5. We also used the structure, confrontation, and advice subscale scores of the Therapy Process Rating Scale and the Working Alliance Inventory. We examined these process characteristics in interventions across 1 U.S. RCT of middle-aged medical inpatients with unhealthy alcohol use (n = 124) and 2 Swiss RCTs of young men with binge drinking in a nonclinical setting: Swiss-one (n = 62) and Swiss-two (n = 128). We assessed the associations between these characteristics and drinks/d reported by participants 3 to 6 months after study entry. RESULTS: In all 3 RCTs, mean MISC counselor's rating scales scores were consistent with MI proficiency. In overdispersed Poisson regression models, most BMI characteristics were not significantly associated with drinks/d in follow-up. In the U.S. RCT, confrontation and self-exploration were associated with more drinking. Giving advice was significantly associated with less drinking in the Swiss-one RCT. Contrary to expectations, MI spirit was not consistently associated with drinking across studies. CONCLUSIONS: Across different populations and settings, intervention characteristics viewed as central to efficacious BMIs were neither robust nor consistent predictors of drinking outcome. Although there may be alternative reasons why the level of MI processes was not predictive of outcomes in these studies (limited variability in scores), efforts to understand what makes BMIs efficacious may require attention to factors beyond intervention process characteristics typically examined.
