We present explicit numerical evidence of reflection-positivity violation for the lattice Landau gluon propagator in three-dimensional pure SU(2) gauge theory. We use data obtained at very large lattice volumes (V = 80(3), 140(3)) and for three different lattice couplings in the scaling region (beta = 4.2, 5.0, 6.0). In particular, we observe a clear oscillatory pattern in the real-space propagator C(t). We also verify that the (real-space) data show good scaling in the range t is an element of[0, 3]fm and can be fitted using a Gribov-like form. The violation of positivity is in contradiction with a stable-particle interpretation of the associated field theory and may be viewed as a manifestation of confinement.

The study was performed to examine the responses to catecholamines in vas deferens isolated from rats submitted to acute swimming-induced stress. It was demonstrated that acute stress induces a significant subsensitivity of rat vas deferens to norepinephrine. This subsensitivity was inhibited when the experiment was carried out in the presence of either cocaine (10(-5) M) or timolol (10(-5) M). on the other hand, the rat vas deferens sensitivity to methoxamine was significantly increased by acute swimming-induced stress. Thus, despite acute swimming stress inducing a reduction in response to norepinephrine, the alpha(1)-adrenoceptor-mediated contractile response was increased. Additionally there were increases in neuronal uptake and beta(2)-adrenoceptor activity that opposes the alpha(1)-adrenoceptor activity. Integrated, these phenomena are responsible for the rat vas deferens subsensitivity to norepinephrine which may be involved in body homeostasis in stressogenic situations. J Strength Cond Res 26(9): 2507-2514, 2012-Futsal players suffer injuries resulting from muscle fatigue and contact or collision among players. Muscle lesions can be detected by measuring muscle lesion markers such as creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in plasma. After an initial lesion, there is an increase in the plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and proinflammatory cytokines. These mediators may activate neutrophils and contribute to tissue damage and increase susceptibility to invasive microorganisms. In this study, we investigated the effect of a futsal match on muscle lesion markers, cytokines, and CRP in elite players. The basal and stimulated neutrophil responsiveness after a match was also evaluated based on measurements of neutrophil necrosis, apoptosis, phagocytic capacity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha [TNF-alpha], interleukin [IL]-8, IL-1 beta, IL-10, and IL-1ra) production. Blood samples were taken from 16 players (26.4 +/- 3.2 years, 70.2 +/- 6.9 kg, 59.7 +/- 5.1 ml.kg(-1).min(-1), sports experience of 4.4 +/- 0.9 years) before and immediately after a match. Exercise increased the serum activities of CK (2.5-fold) and LDH (1.3-fold). Playing futsal also increased the serum concentrations of IL-6 (1.6-fold) and CRP (1.6-fold). The TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-8, IL-1ra, and IL-10 serum levels were not modified in the conditions studied. The futsal match induced neutrophil apoptosis, as indicated by phosphatidylserine externalization (6.0-fold). The exercise induced priming of neutrophils by increasing ROS (1.3-fold), TNF-alpha (5.8-fold), and IL-1 beta (4.8-fold) released in nonstimulated cells. However, in the stimulated condition, the exercise decreased neutrophil function, diminishing the release of ROS by phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated neutrophils (1.5-fold), and the phagocytic capacity (1.6-fold). We concluded that playing futsal induces inflammation, primes and activates neutrophils, and reduces the efficiency of neutrophil phagocytosis immediately after a match.

The main clinical manifestations of the spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) result from the involvement of the cerebellum and its connections. Cerebellar activity has been consistently observed in functional imaging studies of olfaction, but the anatomical pathways responsible for this connection have not yet been elucidated. Previous studies have demonstrated olfactory deficit in SCA2, Friedreich's ataxia and in small groups of ataxia of diverse aetiology. The authors used a validated version of the 16-item smell identification test from Sniffin' Sticks (SS-16) was used to evaluate 37 patients with genetically determined autosomal dominant ataxia, and 31 with familial ataxia of unknown genetic basis. This data was also compared with results in 106 Parkinson's disease patients and 218 healthy controls. The SS-16 score was significantly lower in ataxia than in the control group (p<0.001, 95% CI for beta=0.55 to 1.90) and significantly higher in ataxia than in Parkinson's disease (p<0.001, 95% CI for beta=-4.58 to -3.00) when adjusted for age (p=0.001, 95% CI for beta=-0.05 to -0.01), gender (p=0.19) and history of tobacco use (p=0.41). When adjusted for general cognitive function, no significant difference was found between the ataxia and control groups. This study confirms previous findings of mild hyposmia in ataxia, and further suggests this may be due to general cognitive deficits rather than specific olfactory problems.

Two new epimeric chlorinated withaphysalins, rel-(4 beta,5 beta,6 alpha,18S,22R)- and rel-(4 beta,5 beta,6 alpha,18R,22R)-6-chloro-18,20-epoxy-18-ethoxy-4,5-dihydroxy-1- oxowitha-2,24-diene-26,22-lactone (1 and 2 resp.), together with the new rel-(4 beta,5 beta,6a,18R,22R)-6-chloro-18,20-epoxy-4,5-dihydroxy-18-methoxy-1-oxowitha-2,24-diene-26,22-lactone (3) and rel-(3 beta,4 beta,5 beta,6 beta,18R,22R)-5,6:18,20-diepoxy-3,18-diethoxy-4-hydroxy-1-oxowith-24-ene-26,22-lactone (4) were isolated from the leaves of Acnistus arborescens and named withaphysalins TW, respectively. The final structures and the complete 1H- and 13C-NMR assignments of the three chlorowithaphysalins 13 were performed by means of HR-ESI-MS and 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments, including COSY, HSQC, and HMBC, beside comparison with spectral data of analogous compounds from the literature. The structure of 4 was also confirmed by means of a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

The biotransformation of the sesquiterpene lactone tagitinin C by the fungus Aspergillus terreus MT 5.3 yielded a rare derivative that was elucidated by spectrometric methods. The fungus led to the formation of a different product through an unusual epoxidation reaction between C4 and C5, formation of a C3,C10 ether bridge, and a methoxylation of the C1 of tagitinin C. The chemical structure of the product, namely 1 beta-methoxy-3 alpha-hydroxy-3,10 beta-4,5 alpha-diepoxy-8 beta-isobutyroyloxygermacr-11(13)-en-6 alpha,12-olide, is the same as that of a derivative that was recently isolated from the flowers of a Brazilian population of Mexican sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia), which is the source of the substrate tagitinin C. The in vitro cytotoxic activity of the substrate and the biotransformed product were evaluated in HL-60 cells using an MTT assay, and both compounds were found to be cytotoxic. We show that soil fungi may be useful in the biotransformation of sesquiterpene lactones, thereby leading to unusual changes in their chemical structures that may preserve or alter their biological activities, and may also mimic plant biosynthetic pathways for production of secondary metabolites.

The progression of carcinogenesis entails the detachment of cells, invasion and migration of neoplastic cells. Alterations in epithelial adhesion and basement membrane proteins might mediate the early stages of carcinogenesis. This study investigated the expression of adhesion molecules and the basement membrane protein laminin-5 in actinic cheilitis (AC) and incipient squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip to understand early photocarcinogenesis. Ln-5 gamma 2 chain as well as alpha 3, beta 1 subunits of alpha 3 beta 1 heterodimer and beta 4 subunit of integrin alpha 6 beta 4 were evaluated by immunohistochemistry in 16 cases of AC and 16 cases of superficially invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SISCC). Most AC cases showed reduced expression of beta 1, beta 4 and alpha 3 integrins, and SISCCs lacked beta 1, beta 4 and alpha 3 integrins in the invasive front. AC cases were negative for the Ln-5 gamma 2 chain. Five cases of SISCC (31%) showed heterogeneous Ln-5 gamma 2 chain expression in the invasive front of the tumor. Integrin beta 1, beta 4 and alpha 3 expression is lost during the early stages of lip carcinogenesis. Expression of Ln-5 gamma 2 in the invasive front in cases and its correlation with tumor progression suggest that it mediates the acquisition of the migrating and invading epithelial cell phenotype. RATIONALE: Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic drug with a more favourable safety profile than typical antipsychotics with a hitherto unknown topographic quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) profile. OBJECTIVES: We investigated electrical brain activity (QEEG and cognitive event related potentials, ERPs) in healthy subjects who received olanzapine. METHODS: Vigilance-controlled, 19-channel EEG and ERP in an auditory odd-ball paradigm were recorded before and 3 h, 6 h and 9 h after administration of either a single dose of placebo or olanzapine (2.5 mg and 5 mg) in ten healthy subjects. QEEG was analysed by spectral analysis and evaluated in nine frequency bands. For the P300 component in the odd-ball ERP, the amplitude and latency was analysed. Statistical effects were tested using a repeated-measurement analysis of variance. RESULTS: For the interaction between time and treatment, significant effects were observed for theta, alpha-2, beta-2 and beta-4 frequency bands. The amplitude of the activity in the theta band increased most significantly 6 h after the 5-mg administration of olanzapine. A pronounced decrease of the alpha-2 activity especially 9 h after 5 mg olanzapine administration could be observed. In most beta frequency bands, and most significantly in the beta-4 band, a dose-dependent decrease of the activity beginning 6 h after drug administration was demonstrated. Topographic effects could be observed for the beta-2 band (occipital decrease) and a tendency for the alpha-2 band (frontal increase and occipital decrease), both indicating a frontal shift of brain electrical activity. There were no significant changes in P300 amplitude or latency after drug administration. Conclusion: QEEG alterations after olanzapine administration were similar to EEG effects gained by other atypical antipsychotic drugs, such as clozapine. The increase of theta activity is comparable to the frequency distribution observed for thymoleptics or antipsychotics for which treatment-emergent somnolence is commonly observed, whereas the decrease of beta activity observed after olanzapine administration is not characteristic for these drugs. There were no clear signs for an increased cerebral excitability after a single-dose administration of 2.5 mg and 5 mg olanzapine in healthy controls.

The response to beta(2)-agonists differs between asthmatics and has been linked to subsequent adverse events, even death. Possible determinants include beta(2)-adrenoceptor genotype at position 16, lung function and airway hyperresponsiveness. Fluctuation analysis provides a simple parameter alpha measuring the complex correlation properties of day-to-day peak expiratory flow. The present study investigated whether alpha predicts clinical response to beta(2)-agonist treatment, taking into account other conventional predictors. Analysis was performed on previously published twice-daily peak expiratory flow measurements in 66 asthmatic adults over three 6-month randomised order treatment periods: placebo, salbutamol and salmeterol. Multiple linear regression was used to determine the association between alpha during the placebo period and response to treatment (change in the number of days with symptoms), taking into account other predictors namely beta(2)-adrenoceptor genotype, lung function and its variability, and airway hyperresponsiveness. The current authors found that alpha measured during the placebo period considerably improved the prediction of response to salmeterol treatment, taking into account genotype, lung function or its variability, or airway hyperresponsiveness. The present study provides further evidence that response to beta(2)-agonists is related to the time correlation properties of lung function in asthma. The current authors conclude that fluctuation analysis of lung function offers a novel predictor to identify patients who may respond well or poorly to treatment.

K-Ar ages of 82 slate and schist (white-mica-rich whole rock) samples are reported for Late Precambrian-Early Ordovician metamorphic rocks of the Wilson, Bowers and Robertson Bay terranes of northern Victoria Land. These are amalgamated in two vertical sections along composite NE-SW horizontal profiles across (1) Oates Coast in the north, and (2) Terra Nova Bay area in the south. The ages are in the range 328-517 Ma. Both profiles show some age variation with altitude, but more importantly, they define an inverted wedge shaped pattern, reflecting a "pop-up" strucure. This is oriented NW-SE at the eastern margin of the Wilson terrane, and the edges coincide with the Exiles and Wilson Thrusts which cross the region. Ages inside the "pop-up" structure are younger, ca. 460-480 Ma, than those along its eastern and western flanks, ca. 490-520 Ma. The K-Ar age patterns thus demonstrate a late Ross Orogenic age (ca. 460 Ma) for this structure, which may be associated with assembly of the Wilson and Bowers terranes.

Conventional K-Ar and 40Ar/39Ar age data on altered basalts from DSDP Hole 192A on Meiji Guyot, Emperor Seamount chain, indicate a minimum age for the volcano of 61.9 ± 5.0 m.y. The K-Ar data are consistent with the early Maestrichtian date of the overlying sediments, but do not provide either a positive or negative test of the hypothesis that Meiji is older than Emperor volcanoes to the south. The most prominent alteration affecting the age measurements is potassium metasomatism, particularly of feldspar phenocrysts. The K-Ar apparent ages of feldspar separates from the Meiji basalts show that more than half of the potassium metasomatism occurred within the last 25 m.y. or so, and that if the potassium replacement rate has been constant, then the alteration of the Meiji basalts did not begin for 10 to 20 m.y. after the volcano formed.

We report the isolation of 10 differentially expressed cDNAs in the process of apoptosis induced by the p53 tamor suppressor. As a global analytical method, we performed a differential display of mRNA between mouse M1 myeloid leukemia cells and derived clone LTR6 cells, which contain a stably transfected temperature-sensitive mutant of p53. At 32 degrees C wild-type p53 function is activated in LTR6 cells, resulting in programmed cell death. Eight genes are activated (TSAP; tumor suppressor activated pathway), and two are inhibited (TSIP, tumor suppressor inhibited pathway) in their expression. None of the 10 sequences has hitherto been recognized as part of the p53 signaling pathway. Three TSAPs are homologous to known genes. TSAP1 corresponds to phospholipase C beta 4. TSAP2 has a conserved domain homologous to a multiple endocrine neoplasia I (ZFM1) candidate gene. TSAP3 is the mouse homologue of the Drosophila seven in absentia gene. These data provide novel molecules involved in the pathway of wild-type p53 activation. They establish a functional link between a homologue of a conserved developmental Drosophila gene and signal transduction in tumor suppression leading to programmed cell death.
