Generally, the magnitude of pollutant emissions from diesel engines running on biodiesel fuel is ultimately coupled to the structure of respective molecules that constitutes the fuel. Previous studies demonstrated the relationship between organic fraction of PM and its oxidative potential. Herein, emissions from a diesel engine running on different biofuels were analysed in more detail to explore the role different organic fractions play in the measured oxidative potential. In this work, a more detailed chemical analysis of biofuel PM was undertaken using a compact Time of Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (c-ToF AMS). This enabled a better identification of the different organic fractions that contribute to the overall measured oxidative potentials. The concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured using a profluorescent nitroxide molecular probe 9-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylisoindolin-2-yloxyl-5-ethynyl)-10-(phenylethynyl)anthracene (BPEAnit). Therefore the oxidative potential of the PM, measured through the ROS content, although proportional to the total organic content in certain cases shows a much higher correlation with the oxygenated organic fraction as measured by the c-ToF AMS. This highlights the importance of knowing the surface chemistry of particles for assessing their health impacts. It also sheds light onto new aspects of particulate emissions that should be taken into account when establishing relevant metrics for assessing health implications of replacing diesel with alternative fuels.

Superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 thin films with various thicknesses from 100 Å to 5000 Å were deposited on (100) SrTiO3 substrates with std. BaF2 coevaporation process. The films had crit. temps. of up to 93 K. The best crit. currents were 1 × 106 A/cm2 at 77 K and 3 × 107 A/cm2 at 4.2 K. The crit. current was generally higher for thinner films. Two different etching methods were used to pattern the films for jc measurements: Ar ion etching and EDTA wet etching. The wet etching was found to work well for thicker films (>1000 Å). For the thinner films, the ion etching process was preferred because of the reduced film surface degrdn. [on SciFinder(R)]

Despite the existence of air quality guidelines in Australia and New Zealand, the concentrations of particulate matter have exceeded these guidelines on several occasions. To identify the sources of particulate matter, examine the contributions of the sources to the air quality at specific areas and estimate the most likely locations of the sources, a growing number of source apportionment studies have been conducted. This paper provides an overview of the locations of the studies, salient features of the results obtained and offers some perspectives for the improvement of future receptor modelling of air quality in these countries. The review revealed that because of its advantages over alternative models, Positive Matrix Factorisation (PMF) was the most commonly applied model in the studies. Although there were differences in the sources identified in the studies, some general trends were observed. While biomass burning was a common problem in both countries, the characteristics of this source varied from one location to another. In New Zealand, domestic heating was the highest contributor to particle levels on days when the guidelines were exceeded. On the other hand, forest back-burning was a concern in Brisbane while marine aerosol was a major source in most studies. Secondary sulphate, traffic emissions, industrial emissions and re-suspended soil were also identified as important sources. Some unique species, for example, volatile organic compounds and particle size distribution were incorporated into some of the studies with results that have significant ramifications for the improvement of air quality. Overall, the application of source apportionment models provided useful information that can assist the design of epidemiological studies and refine air pollution reduction strategies in Australia and New Zealand.

Charging of micron-size particulates, often appearing in fluorocarbon plasma etching experiments, is considered. It is shown that in inductively coupled and microwave slot-excited plasmas of C4F8 and Ar gas mixtures, the equilibrium particle charge and charge relaxation processes are controlled by a combination of microscopic electron, atomic (Ar+ and F+), and molecular ion (CF+ 3, CF+ 2, and CF+) currents. The impact of molecular ion currents on the particulate charging and charge relaxation processes is analyzed. It is revealed that in low-power (<0.5 kW) microwave slot-excited plasmas, the impact of the combined molecular ion current to the total positive microscopic current on the particle can be as high as 40%. The particulate charge relaxation rate in fluorocarbon plasmas appears to exceed 108 s-1, which is almost one order of magnitude higher than that from purely argon plasmas. This can be attributed to the impact of positive currents of fluorocarbon molecular ions, as well as to the electron density fluctuations with particle charge, associated with electron capture and release by the particulates.

Airborne particulate pollutant is considered to be one of the major harmful emissions produced by vehicle engines as it has been directly linked to serious health problems. Passengers spend long times at bus stations and may be exposed to high concentrations of pollution. Particle pollution at two bus stations in Brisbane, Australia were monitored. The two bus stations consisted of markedly different site geography and surroundings with one situated in a street canyon and the other elevated above ground level. The same flow of traffic operated through both stations. Real time measurements of ultrafine particle concentration, size distribution and meteorological conditions were carried out on the platform continuously over several days. The results showed that the particle number concentrations were significantly different at the two stations, suggesting that the layout of site geometry and surroundings was a dominant determining factor through the injection of fresh air into the station platforms and the rates of dilution.

Several cell-free assays are currently used to quantify and detect the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). All of them have certain limitations, do not provide direct comparison of results and, to date, none of these assays have been acknowledged as the most suitable acellular assay and none has yet been adopted for investigation of potential PM toxicity. These assays include DTT, ascorbic acid, DCFHDA and PFN assays which have been used in measurements of the particles generated from various combustion sources such as diesel engine, wood smoke (or biomass burning) and cigarette smoke, as well as for outdoor measurements. All the probes use different units for expressing redox properties of PM. Also, their reactivity is being triggered by different types of ROS. This limits the direct comparison of the results that are reporting the toxicity of the same aerosol type measured with various probes. This study is evaluating and comparing the various assays in order to develop deeper understanding of their capabilities, selectivity as well as improve understanding of the underlying chemical mechanisms. This study is seeking to investigate the effect of non-thermal plasma technology in the abatement of particulate matter (PM) from the actual diesel exhaust. Ozone (O3) strongly promotes PM oxidation, the main product of which is carbon dioxide (CO2). PM oxidation into the less harmful product (CO2) is the main objective whiles the correlation between PM, O3 and CO2 is considered. A dielectric barrier discharge reactor has been designed with pulsed power technology to produce plasma inside the diesel exhaust. To characterise the system under varied conditions, a range of applied voltages from 11 kVPP to 21kVPP at repetition rates of 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 kHz, have been experimentally investigated. The results show that by increasing the applied voltage and repetition rate, higher discharge power and CO2 dissociation can be achieved. The PM removal efficiency of more than 50% has been achieved during the experiments and high concentrations of ozone on the order of a few hundreds of ppm have been observed at high discharge powers. Furthermore, O3, CO2 and PM concentrations at different plasma states have been analysed for time dependence. Based on this analysis, an inverse relationship between ozone concentration and PM removal has been found and the role of ozone in PM removal in plasma treatment of diesel exhaust has been highlighted.

This thesis improves our insight towards the effects of using biodiesels on the particulate matter emission of diesel engines and contributes to our understanding of their potential adverse health effects. The novelty of this project is the use of biodiesel fuel with controlled chemical composition that enables us to relate changes of physiochemical properties of particles to specific properties of the biodiesel. For the first time, the possibility of a correlation of the volatility and the Reactive Oxygen Species concentration of the particles is investigated versus the saturation, oxygen content and carbon chain length of the fuel.

Barium lanthanum bismuth titanate (Ba1−(3/2)xLaxBi4Ti4O15, x = 0–0.4) ceramics were fabricated using the powders synthesized via the solid-state reaction route. X-ray powder diffraction analysis confirmed the above compositions to be monophasic and belonged to the m = 4 member of the Aurivillius family of oxides. The effect of the partial presence of La3+ on Ba2+ sites on the microstructure, dielectric and relaxor behaviour of BaBi4Ti4O15 (BBT) ceramics was investigated. For the compositions pertaining to x ≤ 0.1, the dielectric constant at both room temperature and in the vicinity of the temperature of the dielectric maximum (Tm) of the parent phase (BBT) increased significantly with an increase in x while Tm remained almost constant. Tm shifted towards lower temperatures accompanied by a decrease in the magnitude of the dielectric maximum (εm) with an increase in the lanthanum content (0.1 < x ≤ 0.4). The dielectric relaxation was modelled using the Vogel–Fulcher relation and a decrease in the activation energy for frequency dispersion with increasing x was observed. The frequency dispersion of Tm was found to decrease with an increase in lanthanum doping, and for compositions corresponding to x ≥ 0.3, Tm was frequency independent. Well-developed P(polarization)–E(electric field) hysteresis loops were observed at 150 °C for all the samples and the remanent polarization (2Pr) was improved from 6.3 µC cm−2 for pure BBT to 13.4 µC cm−2 for Ba0.7La0.2Bi4Ti4O15 ceramics. Dc conductivities and associated activation energies were evaluated using impedance spectroscopy.

X-ray and He(II) ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy studies of the interaction of CO with oxygen on potassium-, caesium- and barium-covered Ag surfaces have shown the formation of carbonate at 300 K. While on a caesium-covered surface only carbonate formation takes place, on the potassium- and barium-covered surfaces molecularly chemisorbed CO is also formed. The variation of the surface concentrations of carbon and oxygen with temperature has been examined and a reaction sequence for the interaction of CO with adsorbed oxygen on potassium-, caesium- and barium-covered Ag surfaces is suggested.

Single crystal [(111) and (100) planes], and powder ESR of Mn2+ (substituting for Ca2+) in Ca2Ba(C2H5COO)6 in the temperature range 220°C to -160°C shows (i) a doubling of both the physically and chemically inequivalent sites, and a change in the magnitude (150 G at -6°C to 170 G at -8°C) as well as the orientation of the D tensor across the -6°C transition and (ii) an inflection point in the D vs T plot across the -75°C transition. The oxygen octahedra around the Ca2+ sites are inferred to undergo alternate rotations, showing the participation of the carboxyl oxygens in the -6°C transition. A relation of the type D=D0(1+αT+βT2) seems to fit the D variation satisfactorily.

For N2 on a clean Fe surface, the adsorbed precursor in a parallel orientation becomes predominant around 110 K, while at lower temperatures it coexists with a weakly adsorbed species. On a Ba-promoted Fe surface, however, N2 is present exclusively in the precursor state in the temperature range 80–150 K following moderate exposure. Besides exhibiting a low N-N stretching frequency of 1530 cm−1, the precursor shows a clear separation between the 5σ and 1π levels in the UPS; the precursor dissociates to give a nitridic species around 160 K.
