The reconstruction of the stable carbon isotope evolution in atmospheric CO2 (d13Catm ), as archived in Antarctic ice cores, bears the potential to disentangle the contributions of the different carbon cycle fluxes causing past CO2 variations. Here we present a new record of d13Catm before, during and after the Marine Isotope Stage 5.5 (155 000 to 105 000 years BP). The record was derived with a well established sublimation method using ice from the EPICA Dome C (EDC) and the Talos Dome ice cores in East Antarctica. We find a 0.4 permil shift to heavier values between the mean d13Catm level in the Penultimate (~ 140 000 years BP) and Last Glacial Maximum (~ 22 000 years BP), which can be explained by either (i) changes in the isotopic composition or (ii) intensity of the carbon input fluxes to the combined ocean/atmosphere carbon reservoir or (iii) by long-term peat buildup. Our isotopic data suggest that the carbon cycle evolution along Termination II and the subsequent interglacial was controlled by essentially the same processes as during the last 24 000 years, but with different phasing and magnitudes. Furthermore, a 5000 years lag in the CO2 decline relative to EDC temperatures is confirmed during the glacial inception at the end of MIS 5.5 (120 000 years BP). Based on our isotopic data this lag can be explained by terrestrial carbon release and carbonate compensation.

Primary magmatic phases (spinel, olivine, plagioclase, clinopyroxene, amphibole, and biotite) and secondary phyllosilicates (smectite, chlorite-smectite, and celadonite) were analyzed by electron microprobe in alkalic and tholeiitic dolerites and basalts from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 800, 801, and 802. Aphyric alkalic dolerite sills (Hole 800A) and basalt flows (Holes 801B and 801C) share common mineralogical features: matrix feldspars are strongly zoned from labradorite cores to discrete sodic rims of alkali feldspar with a high Or component, which overlaps that of quench microlites in glassy mesostasis; little fractionated clinopyroxenes are Ti-rich diopsides and augites (with marked aegirine-augite rims at Site 801); rare, brown, Fe**3+-rich amphibole is winchite; and late biotites exhibit variable Ti contents. Alkalic rims to feldspars probably developed at the same time as quenched mesostasis feldspars and late-stage magmatic biotite, and represent the buildup of K-rich hydrous fluids during crystallization. Phenocryst phases in primitive mid-ocean ridge tholeiites from Hole 801C (Mg numbers about 70) have extreme compositions with chrome spinel (Cr/Cr + Al ratios about 0.2-0.4), Ni-rich olivine (Fo90), and highly calcic plagioclase (An90). Later glomerophyric clumps of plagioclase (An75-80) and clinopyroxene (diopside-augite) are strongly zoned and probably reflect rapidly changing melt conditions during upward transport, prior to seafloor quenching. In contrast, phenocryst phases (olivine, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene) in the Hole 802A tholeiites show limited variation and do not have such primitive compositions, reflecting the uniform and different chemical composition of all the bulk rocks. Replacive phyllosilicates in both alkalic and tholeiitic basalts include various colored smectites (Fe-, Mg-, and Al-saponites), chlorite-smectite and celadonite. Smectite compositions typically reflect the replaced host composition; glass is replaced by brown Fe-saponites (variable Fe/Mg ratios) and olivine by greenish Mg-saponites (or Al-rich chlorite-smectite).

A moderate-resolution isotope stratigraphy (with an average of one sample per 17,500 yr.) derived from the benthic foraminifer Uvigerina (or Cibicides), the planktonic foraminifer Globigerina bulloides, and calcareous nannofossil concentrates is presented for the entire Quaternary (and latest Pliocene) section of mid-upper bathyal calcareous oozes from DSDP Site 593, western Challenger Plateau, south Tasman Sea. Superimposed on a trend of gradually increasing average delta18O values through the Pleistocene, reflecting the progressive buildup of polar ice sheets, is a record of highfrequency but generally low amplitude (0.5-1?) isotope fluctuations in the early Quaternary (1.9-1.0 m.y.), followed by a greatly increased intensity (1.5-2.0 ?) of glacial-interglacial fluctuations during the late Quaternary (< 1.0 m.y.). The standard late Quaternary isotope stages 1 to 24 are mainly resolvable. Significant excursions in both delta18O and delta13C values at various times during the Quaternary are suggested to be due to periodic, fundamental changes in ocean circulation properties over the plateau. For example, intensified upwelling of Antarctic Intermediate Waters during several glacial periods is indicated by the convergence of benthic and planktonic foraminiferal delta18O data, and productivity variations may account for certain delta13C spikes in the record. With increasingly higher resolution analysis this core will provide a useful Quaternary isotope reference section for southern temperate waters in the southwest Pacific, centered on New Zealand.

We infer variations in paleoproductivity and eolian input at ODP Site 1082 in the Walvis Basin from stable oxygen isotope compositions of the planktonic foraminifera Globorotalia inflata, total organic carbon mass accumulation rates (TOC MAR), and X-ray fluorescence analyses of Fe content. The most pronounced paleoclimatic changes correspond to the time at about 0.9 Ma, when glacial conditions in the northern hemisphere (NH) led to the onset of pronounced 100-kyr glacial-interglacial cycles. We used Fe intensity as a proxy for eolian terrigenous input, and TOC MAR as a paleoproductivity indicator. Paleoproductivity and eolian input show generally higher-amplitude variations of glacial-interglacial cyclicity from 1.5 to 0.58 Ma, indicating pronounced variations in upwellingfavorable winds in this area. At 0.58 Ma, paleoproductivity and eolian input shifted abruptly to lower-amplitude variations with a periodicity of 100 kyr while delta18O values show a trend toward more negative isotope values for the past 0.65 Myr. Especially during glacial periods, oxygen isotope values indicate increasingly warmer sea-surface temperatures toward the end of the Pleistocene. To evaluate the relative influences of NH glaciation and southern hemisphere (SH) insolation as potential forcing mechanisms for variations of eolian input and productivity in the northern Benguela system, we filtered our proxy records at orbital frequencies. The filtered records of Fe intensity and TOC MAR indicate a strong influence of the 100-kyr and 41-kyr frequency bands, supporting our assumption that strong ice buildup in the NH is the dominant trigger for climate changes on the continent and probably in trade-wind intensity. SH insolation and low-latitude precession-related insolation changes were important for paleoproductivity variations in the northern Benguela system, modifying the nutrient supply by southern ocean intermediate waters and the zonal direction of upwelling-inducing trades by the African monsoon system, respectively.

The HERMES cold-water coral database is a combination of historical and published sclerectinia cold-water coral occurrences (mainly Lophelia pertusa) and new records of the HERMES project along the European margin. This database will be updated if new findings are reported. New or historical data can be sent to Ben De Mol (mailto:bendemol@ub.edu). Besides geocodes a second category indicates the coral species and if they are sampled alive or dead. If absolute dating is available of the corals this is provide together with the method. Only the framework building cold-water corals are selected: Lophelia pertusa, Madrepora oculata and common cold-water corals often associated with the framework builders like: Desmophyllum sp and Dendrophylia sp. in comments other observed corals are indicated. Another field indicates if the corals are part of a large build-up or solitary. A third category of parameters is referencing to the quality of the represented data. In this category are the following parameters indicated: source of reference, source type (such as Fishermen location, scientific paper, cruise reports). sample code and or name and sample type (e.g. rock dredge, grab, video line). These parameters must allow an assessment of the quality of the described parameters.

Paleogene stable oxygen and carbon isotopes were measured in formainifera from ODP Sites 689 and 690 at Maud Rise in the Atlantic Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean, and from Sites 738, 744, 748 and 749 at the southern Kerguelen Plateau in the Indian Ocean sector. These data were compared with sedimentological data from the same sample set. Both benthic and planktic d18O values document a cooling trend beginning around 49.5 Ma at all sites. During the late middle Eocene planktic d18O values indicate a steepening latitudinal temperature gradient from 14°C at the northern sites towards 10°C at the southernmost sites. Terrigeneous sand grains of probably ice rafted origin and clay mineral assemblages point to the existence of a limited East Antarctic ice cap with some glaciers reaching sea level as early as middle Eocene time around 45.5 Ma. Between 45 and 40 Ma, average paleotemperatures were between 5° and 7°C in deep and intermediate water masses, while near-surface water masses ranged between 6° and 10°C. During the late Eocene, between 40 and 36 Ma, average temperatures further decreased to 4°-5°C in the deep and intermediate water masses and to 5°-8°C near the sea surface. Abruptly increasing d18O values at approximately 35.9 Ma exactly correlate with a sharp pulse in the deposition of ice-rafted material on the Kerguelen Plateau, a dramatic change in clay mineral composition, and an altered Southern Ocean circulation indicated by a differentiation of benthic d13C values between sites, increasing opal concentrations and decreasing carbonate contents. For planktic and benthic foraminifera this d18O increase ranges between 1.0 and 1.3 per mil, and between 0.9 and 1.4 per mil, respectively. We favour a hypothesis that explains most of the d18O shift at 35.9 Ma with a buildup of a continental East Antarctic ice sheet. Consequently, relatively warm Oligocene Antarctic surface water temperatures probably are explained by a temperate, wet-based nature of the ice sheet. This would also aid in the fast build-up of an ice sheet by enhancing the moisture transport on to the continent.

Oxygen and carbon isotopic records have been developed for the Cenozoic carbonate oozes of Sites 752, 754, 756, and 757 based on the analysis of monospecific benthic foraminifers. The intent of this report is to provide a basic isotopic stratigraphy for use in other paleoceanographic studies. The oxygen isotope record displays the enrichments associated with cooling or ice volume buildup at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, in the middle Miocene, and in the upper Pliocene. The carbon isotopic record contains the Chron 16 enrichment in the lower Miocene and the Chron 6 depletion in the uppermost Miocene.

Sediments at the southern summit of Hydrate Ridge display two distinct modes of gas hydrate occurrence. The dominant mode is associated with active venting of gas exsolved from the accretionary prism and leads to high concentrations (15%-40% of pore space) of gas hydrate in seafloor or near-surface sediments at and around the topographic summit of southern Hydrate Ridge. These near-surface gas hydrates are mainly composed of previously buried microbial methane but also contain a significant (10%-15%) component of thermogenic hydrocarbons and are overprinted with microbial methane currently being generated in shallow sediments. Focused migration pathways with high gas saturation (>65%) abutting the base of gas hydrate stability create phase equilibrium conditions that permit the flow of a gas phase through the gas hydrate stability zone. Gas seepage at the summit supports rapid growth of gas hydrates and vigorous anaerobic methane oxidation. The other mode of gas hydrate occurs in slope basins and on the saddle north of the southern summit and consists of lower average concentrations (0.5%-5%) at greater depths (30-200 meters below seafloor [mbsf]) resulting from the buildup of in situ-generated dissolved microbial methane that reaches saturation levels with respect to gas hydrate stability at 30-50 mbsf. Net rates of sulfate reduction in the slope basin and ridge saddle sites estimated from curve fitting of concentration gradients are 2-4 mmol/m**3/yr, and integrated net rates are 20-50 mmol/m**2/yr. Modeled microbial methane production rates are initially 1.5 mmol/m**3/yr in sediments just beneath the sulfate reduction zone but rapidly decrease to rates of <0.1 mmol/m**3/yr at depths >100 mbsf. Integrated net rates of methane production in sediments away from the southern summit of Hydrate Ridge are 25-80 mmol/m**2/yr. Anaerobic methane oxidation is minor or absent in cored sediments away from the summit of southern Hydrate Ridge. Ethane-enriched Structure I gas hydrate solids are buried more rapidly than ethane-depleted dissolved gas in the pore water because of advection from compaction. With subsidence beneath the gas hydrate stability zone, the ethane (mainly of low-temperature thermogenic origin) is released back to the dissolved gas-free gas phases and produces a discontinuous decrease in the C1/C2 vs. depth trend. These ethane fractionation effects may be useful to recognize and estimate levels of gas hydrate occurrence in marine sediments.

Based on benthic and planktic foraminifera, Bolboforma, oxygen isotope measurements and seismic data, major changes in Miocene, Pliocene and Pleistocene paleoenvironments on the mid Norwegian shelf are discussed and a possible scenario of the late Cenozoic uplift history is given. The dating of the Neogene sequence has been done using foraminifera and Bolboforma. Four main assemblage zones have been identified with nine distinct subzones. Most of the Miocene sequence is preserved. The lower Miocene sediments contain only siliceous microfossils. A period of high fertility and upwelling in the study area prevailed. The early Miocene-early mid Miocene (15 Ma?) change from a siliceous to a calcareous rich microfauna, dominated by Nonion barleeanum, can be related to increased surface-water circulation due to overflow across the Iceland-Faeroe ridge. During the Miocene the temperature decreased in the study area. Evidence of increased amounts of coarser sediments may suggest that an uplift of the mainland areas occurred during the mid-late Miocene. Lower Pliocene sediments contain a foraminiferal fauna that seems to occur in slightly colder conditions than the late Miocene fauna suggesting a further cooling. Possibly, Arctic waters entered the study area in the early Pliocene. A very marked change in lithology (from compacted claystone to unconsolidated diamicton), fauna (from deep dwelling to shallow dwelling species) and seismic signature (from flat lying reflectors to prograding clinoforms) occurs during the mid?-late Pliocene. A two step cooling trend is indicated by the microfauna of these prograding wedges. (1) The first wedge buildups might have been associated with an uplift of the mainland during the early late Pliocene (mid Pliocene, ca. 4 Ma). However, the age determination is somewhat uncertain and may very well be of late Pliocene age. (2) The second step of wedge buildup is associated with a glacial phase where the dominating microfauna exists of arctic species. Large continental ice sheets might have occurred at this time reaching coastal areas and that possibly many of the geomorphological features such as the strandflat were made during this episode. The Pleistocene epoch is represented by an increased percentage of boreal foraminifera intermingled with high arctic species which indicates that interglacial-glacial cycles prevailed and the dynamics of the glacier system changed.

A manganese oxide encrustation (2.5 kg) was dredged, in an island arc setting, downslope of Bertrand bank, a seamount culminating at 70-m depth and located NNE of Grande-Terre, Guadeloupe, and SE of Antigua, West Indies. A thorough texturai analysis indicated a rhythmic precipitation and growth polarity as well as mineralogical ( 10 A tektomanganate) and geochemical (low concentrations of Ni, Cu, Co, Zn, Pb and REE) criteria, point to a submarine hydrothermal origin for most of the sample. The crust was coated with a fine ferromanganese oxide cortex deposited iii a "normal" oceanic environment; it also included micritic fillings, a main pyroclastic zone near the top of the crust, and a Mg-Al sulphate deposit. Planktonic foraminifera coeval with the precipitation of the manganese oxide indicate an age of ca. 3 m. y. (upper Pliocene); i.e., more than 20 m. y. after the cessation of the volcanic activity of the Lesser Antilles outer arc that was responsible for the buildup of the Bertrand seamount. Furthermore, the genesis of the crust is not linked to the activity of the contemporaneous inner arc (Miocene to Present), particularly of its nearmost segment (Basse Terre, Guadeloupe-Montserrat) located about 50 km to the West. The authors suggest that the manganese oxide is the result of convective circulation of sea water through a faulted system occurring in an area of intense seismic activity. The remobilization of chemical elements (Mn, S, etc.) within the seamount volcanic core bas probably affected a substratum that was still hydrothermally altered during the previous volcanic activity of the outer arc. The authors insist on the interest in using texturai analysis for Fe/Mn oxide investigations.

Oligosaccharide synthesis is an important cryoprotection strategy used by woody plants during winter dormancy. At the onset of autumn, starch stored in the stem and buds is broken down in response to the shorter days and lower temperatures resulting in the buildup of oligosaccharides. Given that the enzyme DSP4 is necessary for diurnal starch degradation in Arabidopsis leaves, this study was designed to address the role of DSP4 in this seasonal process in Castanea sativa Mill. The expression pattern of the CsDSP4 gene in cells of the chestnut stem was found to parallel starch catabolism. In this organ, DSP4 protein levels started to rise at the start of autumn and elevated levels persisted until the onset of spring. In addition, exposure of chestnut plantlets to 4 °C induced the expression of the CsDSP4 gene. In dormant trees or cold-stressed plantlets, the CsDSP4 protein was immunolocalized both in the amyloplast stroma and nucleus of stem cells, whereas in the conditions of vegetative growth, immunofluorescence was only detected in the nucleus. The studies indicate a potential role for DSP4 in starch degradation and cold acclimation following low temperature exposure during activity–dormancy transition.

Over the last thirty years or so, as the number of in-house counsel rose and their role increased in scope and prominence, increased attention has been given the various challenges these lawyers face under the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, from figuring out who is the client the in-house lawyer represents, to navigating conflicts of interest, maintaining independence, and engaging in a multijurisdictional practice of law. Less attention, to date, has been given to business risk assessment, perhaps in part because that function appears to be part of in-house counsel’s role as a business person rather than as a lawyer. Overlooking the role of in-house counsel in assessing risk, however, is a risky proposition, because risk assessment constitutes for some in-house counsel a significant aspect of their role, a role that in turn informs and shapes how in-house counsel perform other more overtly legal tasks. For example, wearing her hat as General Counsel, a lawyer for the entity-client may opine and explain issues of compliance with the law. Wearing her hat as the Chief Legal Officer, however, the same lawyer may now be called upon as a member of business management to participate in the decision whether to comply with the law. After outlining some of the traditional challenges faced by in-house counsel under the Rules, this short essay explores risk assessment by in-house counsel and its impact on their role and function under the Rules. It argues that the key to in-house lawyers’ successful navigation of multiple roles, and, in particular, to their effective assessment of business risk is keen awareness of the various hats they are called upon to wear. Navigating these various roles may not be easy for lawyers, whose training and habits of mind often teach them to zoom in on legal risks to the exclusion of business risks. Indeed, law schools continue to teach law students “to think like a lawyer” and law firms, the historical breeding grounds for in-house counsel positions, in a world of increased specialization master the narrower contemplation of legal questions. Yet the present and future of in-house counsel practice demand of its practitioners the careful and gradual coming to terms, buildup and mastery of business risk analysis skills, alongside the cultivation of traditional legal risk analysis tools.

A series of samples from the five sites drilled across the continental shelf and upper slope in Prydz Bay during ODP Leg 119 were consolidation tested in an oedometer. Preconsolidation stresses increase downcore at Sites 739 and 742 in a stepwise manner, and the steps are interpreted to represent periods of increased action of grounded glaciers covering the entire shelf. By the use of theoretical ice sheet surface profiles giving the range of possible ice thicknesses, sediment loading and subsequent erosion seem to be the most important factor for increasing the overconsolidation ratios, and a total glacial erosion exceeding 1 km is possible. Four separate steps in consolidation, here termed "load events" have been identified. The lowermost load event, 1, is correlated to the onset of glaciations reaching the shelf edge and an early period of extensive glaciations, starting in early Oligocene or possibly earlier. Glacial activity related to the buildup of ice in West Antarctica in the late Miocene is tentatively correlated to load event 2. Event 3 is the trace of relatively extensive glacial erosion probably in the Pliocene, whereas the upper step in preconsolidation stress, load event 4, results from the last glaciation reaching the shelf edge, possibly during the late Weichselian. Correlations to other data related to Antarctic glacial history are, however, hampered by the poor age control of the cored diamictites. Consolidation tests may provide a tool for finding the position for hiatuses and unconformities formed subglacially and obscured by subglacial reworking.
