EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): Streamflow values show definite seasonal patterns in their month-to-month correlation structure. The structure also seems to vary as a function of the type of stream (coastal versus mountain or humid versus arid region). The standard autoregressive moving average (ARMA) time series model is incapable of reproducing this correlation structure. ... A periodic ARMA time series model is one in which an ARMA model is fitted to each month or season but the parameters of the model are constrained to be periodic according to a Fourier series. This constraint greatly reduces the number of parameters but still leaves the flexibility for matching the seasonally varying correlograms.

In this paper, a novel algorithm for removing facial makeup disturbances as a face detection preprocess based on high dimensional imaginal geometry is proposed. After simulation and practical application experiments, the algorithm is theoretically analyzed. Its apparent effect of removing facial makeup and the advantages of face detection with this pre-process over face detection without it are discussed. Furthermore, in our experiments with color images, the proposed algorithm even gives some surprises.

Instabilities of fluid flows have traditionally been investigated by normal mode analysis, i.e. by linearizing the equations of flow and testing for unstable eigenvalues of the linearized problem. However, the results of eigenvalue analysis agree poorly in many cases with experiments, especially for shear flows. In this paper we study the instabilities of two-dimensional Couette flow of a polymeric fluid in the framework of non-modal stability theory rather than normal mode analysis. A power-law model is used to describe the polymeric liquid. We focus on the response to external excitations and initial conditions by examining the pseudospectra structures and the transient energy growths. For both Newtonian and non-Newtonian flows, the results show that there can be a rather large transient growth even though the linear operator of Couette flow has no unstable eigenvalue. The effects of non-Newtonian viscosity on the transient behaviors are examined in this study. The results show that the "shear-thinning/shear-thickening" effect increases/decreases the amplitude of responses to external excitations and initial conditions. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. In this paper, a disturbance controller is designed for making robotic system behave as a decoupled linear system according to the concept of internal model. Based on the linear system, the paper presents an iterative learning control algorithm to robotic manipulators. A sufficient condition for convergence is provided. The selection of parameter values of the algorithm is simple and easy to meet the convergence condition. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm..

We examined how marine plankton interaction networks, as inferred by multivariate autoregressive (MAR) analysis of time-series, differ based on data collected at a fixed sampling location (L4 station in the Western English Channel) and four similar time-series prepared by averaging Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) datapoints in the region surrounding the fixed station. None of the plankton community structures suggested by the MAR models generated from the CPR datasets were well correlated with the MAR model for L4, but of the four CPR models, the one most closely resembling the L4 model was that for the CPR region nearest to L4. We infer that observation error and spatial variation in plankton community dynamics influenced the model performance for the CPR datasets. A modified MAR framework in which observation error and spatial variation are explicitly incorporated could allow the analysis to better handle the diverse time-series data collected in marine environments.

Wavelets introduce new classes of basis functions for time-frequency signal analysis and have properties particularly suited to the transient components and discontinuities evident in power system disturbances. Wavelet analysis involves representing signals in terms of simpler, fixed building blocks at different scales and positions. This paper examines the analysis and subsequent compression properties of the discrete wavelet and wavelet packet transforms and evaluates both transforms using an actual power system disturbance from a digital fault recorder. The paper presents comparative compression results using the wavelet and discrete cosine transforms and examines the application of wavelet compression in power monitoring to mitigate against data communications overheads.
