Mabuya arajara Rebouças-Spieker, 1981 has been considered an endemic species from the southern of state of Ceará, restricted to the Deciduous Dry Forests in the slopes of Plateau of Araripe (Chapada do Araripe). Here, we present an updated distributional map for the species and demonstrate that its range is not restricted as formerly believed. In addition, we had an opportunity to observe a gravid female and we describe aspects regarding parturition and number of offspring for the species.

Vehicles running over vertebrates has been an increasing challenge to the local conservation of some herpetofauna. The Amphisbaenidae are fossorial reptiles which are poorly known ecologically. Biological and natural history data were obtained from three specimens of Amphisbaenia alba that were found dead along 8320 km survey of highways. The rarity of road kill and the importance of the species conservation are discussed.

In this study we report on two new records of the blindsnake Typhlops brongersmianus for the municipality of Bauru, midwestern region of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. These records expand the geographic distribution currently known for this species in the state and contribute to the knowledge of snakes in southeastern Brazil. © 2011 Check List and Authors.

The present study reports new records of the Dipsadid snake Rhachidelus brazili Boulenger, 1908, from Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul states, Brazil. Our data extend the known geographical distribution ca. 713 km to the northwest and constitute the first record in the Upper Paraguay sub-basin. © 2011 Check List and Authors.

The present study provides the distribution map and reports new records of the gymnophthalmid lizard Leposoma osvaldoi Avila-Pires, 1995, from Mato Grosso state, Brazil, extending the known geographical distribution of the species ca. 42 km northeastern in straight line from the nearest record in the state. © 2011 Check List and Authors.

Development within the cleidoic egg of birds and reptiles presents the embryo with the problem of accumulation of wastes from nitrogen metabolism. Ammonia derived from protein catabolism is converted into the less toxic product urea or relatively insoluble uric acid. The pattern of nitrogen excretion of the green iguana, Iguana iguana, was determined during embryonic development using samples from allantoic fluid and from the whole homogenized egg, and in hatchlings and adults using samples of blood plasma. Urea was the major excretory product over the course of embryonic development. It was found in higher concentrations in the allantoic sac, suggesting that there is a mechanism present on the allantoic membrane enabling the concentration of urea. The newly hatched iguana still produced urea while adults produced uric acid. The time course of this shift in the type of nitrogen waste was not determined but the change is likely to be related to the water relations associated with the terrestrial habit of the adult. The green iguana produces parchment-shelled eggs that double in mass during incubation due to water absorption; the eggs also accumulate 0.02. mM of urea, representing 82% of the total measured nitrogenous residues that accumulate inside the allantois. The increase in egg mass and urea concentration became significant after 55. days of incubation then were unchanged until hatching. © 2012 Elsevier Inc.

Specimens (n= 41) of the amphisbaenid Amphisbaena wuchereri taken from a population in Minas Gerais state, south-eastern Brazil, were examined for gastrointestinal parasites. A single nematode species was found, Paradollfusnema amphisbaenia. This was a new host record for this nematode species. This parasite was encountered in the large intestine (prevalence of 100%), in the stomach (prevalence of 2%) and in the small intestine (prevalence of 7.3%). The intensity of infection ranged from 1 to 457 individual parasites per host and was positively correlated with body size of both male and female amphisbaenians. The discrepancy index (D) indicated that P. amphisbaenia tended to an even distribution in this host population. The nematode, which did not affect fat body mass, induced inflammatory infiltrations in the small intestine, indicating that the parasites might injure the host's organs. O gênero Ptychoglossus está incluído na família Gymnophthalmidae e abriga atualmente 15 espécies distribuídas principalmente na Amazônia ocidental. Ptychoglossus brevifrontalis, inicialmente considerada como tendo uma distribuição peri-amazônica, nos últimos anos foi registrada em diversos pontos do interior da Amazônia, indicando ampla distribuição na região. Contudo, há poucas informações acerca da variação morfológica ao longo da distribuição da espécie. Neste trabalho foi estudada a variação intra- e interpopulacional na morfologia externa de Ptychoglossus brevifrontalis, analisando-se também a ocorrência de dimorfismo sexual e variação ontogenética. Ptychoglossus nicefori foi incluída no estudo, tendo em vista sua grande semelhança com P. brevifrontalis e o histórico de sinonímia entre as duas espécies. Observou-se variação geográfica em alguns caracteres, sem contudo justificar o reconhecimento de mais de um taxon. A validade de P. nicefori é questionada, porém estudos adicionais são necessários antes da proposição de novas alterações na taxonomia.
