A chemical looping process using the redox reactions of iron oxide has been used to produce separate streams of pure H2 and CO2 from a solid fuel. An iron oxide carrier prepared using a mechanical mixing technique and comprised of 100wt.% Fe2O3 was used. It was demonstrated that hydrogen can be produced from three representative coals - a Russian bituminous, a German lignite and a UK sub-bituminous coal. Depending on the fuel, pure H2 with [CO] ≲50vol.ppm can be obtained from the proposed process. The cyclic stability of the iron oxide carrier was not adversely affected by contaminants found in syngas which are gaseous above 273K. Stable quantities of H2 were produced over five cycles for all three coals investigated. Independent of the fuel, SO2 was not formed during the oxidation with steam, i.e. the produced H2 was not contaminated with SO2. Since oxidation with air removes contaminants and generates useful heat and pure N2 for purging, it should be included in the operating cycle. Overall, it was demonstrated that the proposed process may be an attractive approach to upgrade crude syngas produced by the gasification of low-rank coals to pure H2, representing a substantial increase in calorific value, whilst simultaneous capturing CO2, a greenhouse gas. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

It is well-known that cone effect or focus anisoplanatism is produced by the limited distance of a laser guide star (LGS) which is created within the Earth atmosphere and consequently located at a finite distance from the observer. In this paper, the cone effect of the LGS for different vertical profiles of the refractive index structure constant Cn2 is numerically investigated by using a revised computer program of atmospheric propagation of optical wave and an adaptive optics (AO) system including dynamic control process. According to the practice, the overall tilt for the tilt-correction mirror is obtained from a natural star and the aberrated wavefront for phase correction of the deformable mirror is obtained from a LGS in our numerical simulation. It is surprisingly found that the effect of altitude of the LGS on the AO phase compensation effectiveness by using the commonly-available vertical profiles of Cn2 and the lateral wind speed in the atmosphere is relatively weak, and the cone effect for some Cn2 profiles is even negligible. It is found that the cone effect does not have obvious relationship with the turbulence strength, however, it depends on the vertical distribution profile of Cn 2 apparently. On the other hand, the cone effect depends on the vertical distribution of the lateral wind speed as well. In comparison to a longer wavelength, the cone effect becomes more obvious in the case of a shorter wavelength. In all cases concerned in this paper, an AO system by using a sodium guide star has almost same phase compensation effectiveness as that by using the astronomical target itself as a beacon. Effect of dynamic control process in an AO system on the cone effect is studied in this paper for the first time within our knowledge.

The pure Coulomb explosions of the methane clusters (CA(4))(n), (light atom A = H or D) have been investigated by a simplified electrostatic model for both a single cluster and an ensemble of clusters with a given cluster size distribution. The dependence of the energy of ions produced from the explosions on cluster size and the charge state of the carbon ions has been analysed. It is found that, unlike the average proton energy which increases with the charge q of the carbon ions, the average deuteron energy tends to saturate as q becomes larger than 4. This implies that when the laser intensity is sufficiently high for the (CD4)(n) to be ionized to a charge state of (C4+D4+)(n), the neutron yield from a table-top laser-driven Coulomb explosion of deuterated methane clusters (CD4)(n) could be increased significantly by increasing the interaction volume rather than by increasing the laser intensity to produce the higher charge state (C6+D4+)(n). The flight-time spectra of the carbon ions and the light ions have also been studied.

Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) of a relativistic laser in plasmas is studied in the framework of the standard equation set of a three-wave process. As far as every wave involved in the process is concerned, its evolution has two aspects: time-dependent amplitude and time-dependent frequency. These two aspects affect each other. Strict analysis and numerical experiment on the full three-wave equation set reveal that a fast growing mode of the instability, which could reach a balance or saturation point during a period far shorter than an estimation based on conventional analysis, could take place in a standard three-wave process without coupling with a fourth wave. This fast growing mode is found to stem from the constraint set by the background density on the amplitude of the driven Langmuir wave. The effect of various parameters on the development of the SRS instability is studied by numerical calculation of the history of the instability in different cases. This work contains 4 topics dealing with the properties of the luminescence from Ge.
The temperature, pump-power and time dependences of the photoluminescence spectra of Li-, As-, Ga-, and Sb-doped Ge crystals were studied. For impurity concentrations less than about 1015cm-3, emissions due to electron-hole droplets can clearly be identified. For impurity concentrations on the order of 1016cm-3, the broad lines in the spectra, which have previously been attributed to the emission from the electron-hole-droplet, were found to possess pump-power and time dependent line shape. These properties show that these broad lines cannot be due to emission of electron-hole-droplets alone. We interpret these lines to be due to a combination of emissions from (1) electron-hole- droplets, (2) broadened multiexciton complexes, (3) broadened bound-exciton, and (4) plasma of electrons and holes. The properties of the electron-hole-droplet in As-doped Ge were shown to agree with theoretical predictions.
The time dependences of the luminescence intensities of the electron-hole-droplet in pure and doped Ge were investigated at 2 and 4.2°K. The decay of the electron-hole-droplet in pure Ge at 4.2°K was found to be pump-power dependent and too slow to be explained by the widely accepted model due to Pokrovskii and Hensel et al. Detailed study of the decay of the electron-hole-droplets in doped Ge were carried out for the first time, and we find no evidence of evaporation of excitons by electron-hole-droplets at 4.2°K. This doped Ge result is unexplained by the model of Pokrovskii and Hensel et al. It is shown that a model based on a cloud of electron-hole-droplets generated in the crystal and incorporating (1) exciton flow among electron-hole-droplets in the cloud and (2) exciton diffusion away from the cloud is capable of explaining the observed results.
It is shown that impurities, introduced during device fabrication, can lead to the previously reported differences of the spectra of laser-excited high-purity Ge and electrically excited Ge double injection devices. By properly choosing the device geometry so as to minimize this Li contamination, it is shown that the Li concentration in double injection devices may be reduced to less than about 1015cm-3 and electrically excited luminescence spectra similar to the photoluminescence spectra of pure Ge may be produced. This proves conclusively that electron-hole-droplets may be created in double injection devices by electrical excitation.
The ratio of the LA- to TO-phonon-assisted luminescence intensities of the electron-hole-droplet is demonstrated to be equal to the high temperature limit of the same ratio of the exciton for Ge. This result gives one confidence to determine similar ratios for the electron-hole-droplet from the corresponding exciton ratio in semiconductors in which the ratio for the electron-hole-droplet cannot be determined (e.g., Si and GaP). Knowing the value of this ratio for the electron-hole-droplet, one can obtain accurate values of many parameters of the electron-hole-droplet in these semiconductors spectroscopically.

The velocity of selectively-introduced edge dislocations in 99.999 percent pure copper crystals has been measured as a function of stress at temperatures from 66°K to 373°K by means of a torsion technique. The range of resolved shear stress was 0 to 15 megadynes/ cm^2 for seven temperatures (66°K, 74°K, 83°K, 123°K, 173°K, 296°K, 296°K, 373°K.
Dislocation mobility is characterized by two distinct features; (a) relatively high velocity at low stress (maximum velocities of about 9000 em/sec were realized at low temperatures), and (b) increasing velocity with decreasing temperature at constant stress.
The relation between dislocation velocity and resolved shear stress is:
v = v_o(τ_r/τ_o)^n
where v is the dislocation velocity at resolved shear stress τ_r, v_o is a constant velocity chosen equal to 2000 cm/ sec, τ_o is the resolved shear stress required to maintain velocity v_o, and n is the mobility coefficient. The experimental results indicate that τ_o decreases from 16.3 x 10^6 to 3.3 x 10^6 dynes/cm^2 and n increases from about 0.9 to 1.1 as the temperature is lowered from 296°K to 66°K.
The experimental dislocation behavior is consistent with an interpretation on the basis of phonon drag. However, the complete temperature dependence of dislocation mobility could not be closely approximated by the predictions of one or a combination of mechanisms.

A set of recursive formulas for diffractive optical plates design is described. The pure-phase plates simulated by this method homogeneously concentrate more than 96% of the incident laser energy in the desired focal-plane region. The intensity focal-plane profile fits a lath-order super-Gaussian function and has a nearly perfect flat top. Its fit to the required profile measured in the mean square error is 3.576 x 10(-3). High-density optical data storage requires high-numerical-aperture (NA) lenses and short wavelengths, But, with increasing NA and decreasing wavelength, the depth of focus (DOF) decreases rapidly. We propose to use pure-phase superresolution apodizers to optimize the axial intensity distribution and extend the DOF of an optical pickup. With this kind of apodizer, the expected DOF can be 2-4.88 times greater than that of the original system, and the spot size will be smaller than that of the original system. The three-dimensional distribution of light intensity that is modulated by a pure phase-shifting apodizer is studied. Results show that the Strehl ratio can be altered by the proposed apodizer and by the waist width of incident Gaussian beams. By changing geometrical parameters of the proposed apodizer, we can increase the focal depth to several times that of the original system. The proposed apodizer can also be used to realize focal splitting and local minimum of intensity, which may be advantageous for constructing an optical trap. Furthermore, the local minimum of intensity number is tunable by changing the parameters of the apodizer. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America
