An astronomically calibrated age model for the Pliocene section of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 175 Cape Basin Site 1085 based on magnetic susceptibility data was developed using shipboard biostratigraphic datums. The composite core magnetic susceptibility record was compiled using shipboard correlations between Holes 1085A and 1085B and then tuned to the record of orbital variations in eccentricity to generate an orbitally tuned age model. Magnetic susceptibility apparently records climate variations in the Cape Basin. Strong power spectra values at the 100- and 400-k.y. frequency suggest an orbital control on the beat of Pliocene climate change in the Cape Basin.

Here we present an improved astronomical timescale since 5 Ma as recorded in the ODP Site 1143 in the southern South China Sea, using a recently published Asian summer monsoon record (hematite to goethite content ratio, Hm/Gt) and a parallel benthic d18O record. Correlation of the benthic d18O record to the stack of 57 globally distributed benthic d18O records (LR04 stack) and the Hm/Gt curve to the 65°N summer insolation curve is a particularly useful approach to obtain refined timescales. Hence, it constitutes the basis for our effort. Our proposed modifications result in a more accurate and robust chronology than the existing astronomical timescale for the ODP Site 1143. This updated timescale further enables a detailed study of the orbital variability of low-latitude Asian summer monsoon throughout the Plio-Pleistocene. Comparison of the Hm/Gt record with the d18O record from the same core reveals that the oscillations of low-latitude Asian summer monsoon over orbital scales differed considerably from the glacial-interglacial climate cycles. The popular view that summer monsoon intensifies during interglacial stages and weakens during glacial stages appears to be too simplistic for low-latitude Asia. In low-latitude Asia, some strong summer monsoon intervals appear to have also occurred during glacial stages in addition to their increased occurrence during interglacial stages. Vice versa, some notably weak summer monsoon intervals have also occurred during interglacial stages next to their anticipated occurrence during glacial stages. The well-known mid-Pleistocene transition (MPT) is only identified in the benthic d18O record but not in the Hm/Gt record from the same core. This suggests that the MPT may be a feature of high- and middle-latitude climates, possibly determined by high-latitude ice sheet dynamics. For low-latitude monsoonal climate, its orbital-scale variations respond more directly to insolation and are little influenced by high-latitude processes, thus the MPT is likely not recorded. In addition, the Hm/Gt record suggests that low-latitude Asian summer monsoon intensity has a long-term decreasing trend since 2.8 Ma with increased oscillation amplitude. This long-term variability is presumably linked to the Northern Hemisphere glaciation since then.

Pliocene and Pleistocene sediments of the Oman margin and Owen Ridge are characterized by continuous alternation of light and dark layers of nannofossil ooze and marly nannofossil ooze and cyclic variation of wet-bulk density. Origin of the wet-bulk density and color cycles was examined at Ocean Drilling Program Site 722 on the Owen Ridge and Site 728 on the Oman margin using 3.4-m.y.-long GRAPE (gamma ray attenuation) wet-bulk density records and records of sediment color represented as changes in gray level on black-and-white core photographs. At Sites 722 and 728 sediments display a weak correlation of decreasing wet-bulk density with increasing darkness of sediment color. Wet-bulk density is inversely related to organic carbon concentration and displays little relation to calcium carbonate concentration, which varies inversely with the abundance of terrigenous sediment components. Sediment color darkens with increasing terrigenous sediment abundance (decreasing carbonate content) and with increasing organic carbon concentration. Upper Pleistocene sediments at Site 722 display a regular pattern of dark colored intervals coinciding with glacial periods, whereas at Site 728 the pattern of color variation is more irregular. There is not a consistent relationship between the dark intervals and their relative wet-bulk density in the upper Pleistocene sections at Sites 722 and 728, suggesting that dominance of organic matter or terrigenous sediment as primary coloring agents varies. Spectra of wet-bulk density and optical density time series display concentration of variance at orbital periodicities of 100, 41, 23, and 19 k.y. A strong 41-k.y. periodicity characterizes wet-bulk density and optical density variation at both sites throughout most of the past 3.4 m.y. Cyclicity at the 41-k.y. periodicity is characterized by a lack of coherence between wet-bulk density and optical density suggesting that the bulk density and color cycles reflect the mixed influence of varying abundance of terrigenous sediments and organic matter. The 23-k.y. periodicity in wet-bulk density and sediment color cycles is generally characterized by significant coherence between wet-bulk density and optical density, which reflects an inverse relationship between these parameters. Varying organic matter abundance, associated with changes in productivity or preservation, is inferred to more strongly influence changes in wet-bulk density and sediment color at this periodicity.

The assumption of synchrony of first and last occurrences of fossil taxa can be tested using graphic correlation procedures which, by allowing measured stratigraphic sections to be compared on a common depth scale, make it possible to develop a correlation model which integrates information from a number of cores. The strategy of the test presented here is to use a graphic correlation model that is based on data from the Atlantic (Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) sites 502, 516A) and north Pacific (DSDP site 577A) as a basis for determining to what extent fossil datums in the southwest Pacific are synchronous. First and last occurrences of Pliocene calcareous nannofossils and planktonic foraminifers have been compared in five DSDP cores from the southwest Pacific ocean (sites 586, 587, 588, 590A, and 592). All cores were recovered using hydraulic piston coring technology, which assures the best recovery and minimal disturbance. Most of these cores contain abundant, well-preserved foraminifers and nannofossils, as well as a partial record of many of the expected magnetic polarity reversals in this part of the section. To assure taxonomic consistency, all taxonomic identifications were made by the author. Graphic correlation of this data set suggests that several important biostratigraphic markers are highly diachronous. For example, this study confirms that Globorotalia truncatulinoides first occurs at approximately 2.4 Ma between 20° and 35° south latitude in the southwest Pacific, approximately 0.5 m.y. earlier than it is found elsewhere in the Atlantic and Pacific. Other datums, such as the last occurrence of Discoaster brouweri, are essentially synchronous. These findings suggest that biostratigraphic models based on the assumption of synchrony of first and last occurrences of fossil taxa may be incorrect. Biostratigraphic models created with the Graphic Correlation method offer an opportunity to examine the biogeographic dimensions of origination, migration, and extinction of planktonic taxa.

During the late early Miocene to early middle Miocene, the Owen Ridge was uplifted to a sufficient height as to be above the realm of turbidite deposition. Monsoonal-induced upwelling appears to have been initiated during the Miocene. On the Oman Margin, the effect of upwelling on the microplankton was established by the middle Miocene. However, the effects of upwelling on the Owen Ridge region were not realized until later, in the early late Miocene. A transition in the upwelling regime took place between the Pliocene and Pleistocene. While the Miocene and Pliocene sediments are dominated by the siliceous component, the Pleistocene sediments seem to be dominated by the calcareous component.

A zonation is presented for the oceanic late Middle Jurassic to Late Jurassic of the Atlantic Ocean. The oldest zone, the Stephenolithion bigotii Zone (subdivided into a Stephanolithion hexum Subzone and a Cyclagelosphaera margerelii Subzone), is middle Callovian to early Oxfordian. The Vagalapilla stradneri Zone is middle Oxfordian to Kimmeridgian. The Conusphaera mexicana Zone, subdivided into a lower Hexapodorhabdus cuvillieri Subzone and a Polycostella beckmannii Subzone, is the latest Kimmeridgian to Tithonian. Direct correlation of this zonation with the boreal zonation established for Britain and northern France (Barnard and Hay, 1974; Medd, 1982; Hamilton, 1982) is difficult because of poor preservation resulting in low diversity for the cored section at Site 534 and a lack of Tithonian marker species in the boreal realm. Correlations based on dinoflagellates and on nannofossils with stratotype sections (or regions) give somewhat different results. Dinoflagellates give generally younger ages, especially for the Oxfordian to Kimmeridgian part of the recovered section, than do nannofossils.

Seventy meters of Cenozoic and Mesozoic pelagic clay cored at DSDP Sites 595 and 596 provide the basis for a preliminary analysis of ichthyolith biostratigraphy in the southwest Pacific. A most likely order of the more reliable ichthyolith events is compared with a synthesis of ichthyolith biostratigraphy in the North Pacific and with dated composite ranges. The resultant preliminary ichthyolith stratigraphy suggests that the Cenozoic is represented by the upper 20 m at Site 596 and 16 to 22 m at Site 595. Mixing of taxa precludes a clear recognition of the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary at Site 595. The occurrence of 13 newly described subtypes is recorded in Mesozoic sediments at Sites 595 and 596. These new subtypes and previously described Mesozoic forms may be useful for recognizing Mesozoic subdivisions when their occurrences in sequences dated by other microfossils are investigated.

The main objective of DSDP Leg 73 was to obtain high-quality records of major paleooceanographic events in the South Atlantic. This was achieved by coring six sites on the African plate. The sediments thus recovered span the Cenozoic and five of the six sites proved ideally suited for magnetostratigraphic analysis. The results presented in this paper and elsewhere in this volume constitute the first opportunity to extend the direct correlation of the magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic time-scales into the Paleogene in deep-sea cores. The magnetostratigraphic analyses from DSDP Leg 73 sediments are presented in this paper. The correlation of the magnetostratigraphy to the magnetic polarity time-scale provides tight age-depth control for the five sites analyzed, allowing the accurate calculation of sediment accumulation rates. The data presented here represent a remarkable record of the fine-scale polarity history of the Earth's magnetic field. These data place constraints on the interpretation of smallscale marine magnetic anomalies which are modelled equally effectively by field intensity fluctuations as polarity reversals. At least some of the "tiny wiggles" correspond to very short polarity units in the magnetostratigraphic record. By assuming an axial geocentric dipole, the inclination of the time-averaged magnetic field recorded in the sediments can be used to calculate the paleolatitude at which the sediments were deposited. Combining the age and average inclination information available from the magnetostratigraphy, we present paleolatitudes versus time for the Leg 73 drill sites.

Continental rise Site 905 yielded upper Miocene and Pliocene uniform hemipelagic mud (a contourite) from approximately 215 to 540 meters below seafloor. The nannofossil biostratigraphy of this interval was reexamined using closely spaced samples from core interiors. Additionally, total nannofossil abundances and dominant species and species group abundances were determined to evaluate the potential of this section for extracting sequence stratigraphic information. The data indicate that the putative hiatuses at the end of the late Pliocene (Zones NN17 and NN18) and in the early Pliocene (Zones NN13 and NN14) probably are condensed intervals, but the base of the late Miocene is almost certainly marked by an unconformity. Judging from carbonate content and sedimentation rate both, nannofossil abundance may be governed by carbonate dissolution or by siliciclastic dilution. Consequently, condensed sections cannot be identified by the abundance of pelagic component in the sediment alone, as is possible in equivalent age Gulf of Mexico sediments. Where nannofossil preservation is adequate in consecutive samples, as in the early Pliocene and latest late Miocene, total nannofossil abundance fluctuates regularly and with a periodicity of less than 105 yr, which suggests that dilution of the pelagic component occurred with a frequency probably related to astronomical forcing.

Eocene-Oligocene radiolarians from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 699, 702, and 703, Leg 114 of the Subantarctic Atlantic were examined in order to extend the tripartite zonation for the recovered cores based on results of similar analysis of Leg 120 submarine sediments from the Indian Ocean. Correlation of the two oceans is made by examining 23 biohorizons and the three zones, Eucyrtidium spinosum, Axoprunum irregularis, and Lychnocanoma conica, in ascending stratigraphic order. One new species, Eucyrtidium nishimurae, is described.

Oxygen and carbon stable isotope data of Pyrgo murrhina and flux rates of calcium carbonate in the bio- and magnetostratigraphically dated sediment sequence at DSDP Site 141 were used for a reconstruction of the deep-water circulation in the Northeast Atlantic during Late Miocene and Pliocene times. A distinct change towards reduced advection of deep water recorded near 5.4 Ma is contemporaneous with the cessation of the outflow of the saline Mediterranean water into the Atlantic. During the Pliocene, between 4.5 and 2.75 Ma and between 2.1 and 1.8 Ma, North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) circulation was sluggish and Site 141 possibly influenced by Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW). Near 2.75 Ma, the advection of well-oxidized NADW was strongly intensified. This change is related to an onset of major Arctic ice growth and/or a major cooling of NADW.

During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 202, Pleistocene calcareous nannofossils were recovered from several sites situated between 16°S and 8°N latitude. These sites are under the influence of coastal or equatorial upwelling and offer the opportunity to refine biostratigraphic patterns using alternative events from those used in "standard" zonations (Martini, 1971; Okada and Bukry, 1980, doi:10.1016/0377-8398(80)90016-X). Differences in the positions of the studied sites determine changes in sedimentation rates, which range from ~0.8 to 6 cm/k.y. (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2003, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.202.101.2003). These differences are due to the proximity to the continent and to organic production.

The CaCO3 content in Quaternary deep-sea sediments from Pacific and Atlantic oceans have been suggested to respond differently to glacial/interglacial cycles; CaCO3 contents are highest during glacials in the Pacific but highest during interglacials in the Atlantic Ocean. It is not yet clear as to whether a Pacific or an Atlantic pattern of CaCO3 fluctuations dominates the Indian Ocean. We have analyzed the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 709A from the western equatorial Indian Ocean for the last 1370 ka to determine the relationships between percentages and fluxes of CaCO3 and Quaternary paleoclimatic changes. We also analyzed the coarse (>25 µm) and fine (<25 µm) fractions of CaCO3 in an attempt at estimating the influence of differences in productivity of foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils in shaping the CaCO3 record. Carbon isotopes and Ba/Al ratios were used as indices of productivity. Percentages and fluxes of CaCO3 in the total sediment and <25 µm fraction do not show any clear relationships to glacial/interglacial cycles derived from d18O of the planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber. This indicates that CaCO3 fluctuations at this site do not show either a Pacific or an Atlantic pattern of CaCO3 fluctuations. Fluxes of CaCO3 (0.38 to 2.46 g/cm**2/ ka) in total sediment and Ba/Al ratios (0.58 to 3.93 g/cm**2/ka) show six-fold variability through the last 1370 ka, which points out that productivity changes are significant at this site. Fluxes of the fine CaCO3 component demonstrate a 26-fold change (0.02 to 0.52 g/cm**2/ka), whereas the coarse CaCO3 component exhibit eight-fold change (0.13 to 1.07 g/cm**2/ka). This suggests that productivity variations of calcareous nannofossils are greater in comparison with the foraminifera. On the other hand, mean values of coarse CaCO3 fluxes are higher compared to those of fine CaCO3, which reveals that the foraminifera contribute more to the bulk CaCO3 flux than the calcareous nannofossils in the equatorial Indian Ocean.

Calcareous nannofossils were studied by light microscopy in Neogene sedimentary rocks recovered at four sites of the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 127 in the Japan Sea. Nannofossils occur sporadically at all sites, and allow recognition of seven zones and two subzones; four zones in the Holocene to the uppermost Pliocene, and three zones and two subzones in the middle to lower Miocene. Forty-eight nannofossil species are recognized in 95 of the 808 irregularly-spaced samples taken from all the sites. The nannofossil assemblages in the Miocene are more diverse than those in the Holocene to Pliocene sedimentary interval. The greater diversity and the presence of warm-water taxa, such as Sphenolithus and discoasters in the upper lower Miocene to lower middle Miocene, suggest a relatively warm and stable surface-water condition, attributed to an increased supply of warm water from the subtropical western Pacific Ocean. Site 797 in the southern part of the Yamato Basin contains the most complete and the oldest nannofossil record so far reported from the Japan Sea. The lowermost nannofossil zone at this site, the Helicosphaera ampliaperta Zone (15.7-18.4 Ma) gives a minimum age for the Yamato Basin. This age range predates rotation of southwest Japan, an event previously believed to be caused by the opening of the Japan Sea.

The relative abundance of warm-water Discoaster brouweri vs. cool-water Coccolithus pelagicus provides a useful proxy for interpreting Pliocene surface water temperature trends at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1115 (Solomon Sea). Surface waters were mostly warm during the early Pliocene with a slightly cooler interval centered on 4.5 Ma. A more pronounced cool interval occurred at ~3.2 Ma. The early and mid-Pliocene cool periods may reflect Antarctic glacial growth. A mid-Pliocene warm interval occurred from ~3.1 to 2.8 Ma. Temperature began to decline beginning ~2.7 Ma, marking the onset of Northern Hemisphere glaciation. This long-term decline in surface water temperature is interrupted by a brief warming event at ~2.3 Ma.
