Stress-induced vascular adaptive response in SHR was investigated, focusing on the endothelium. Noradrenaline responses were studied in intact and denuded aortas from 6-week-old (prehypertensive) and 14-week-old (hypertensive) SHR and age-matched Wistar rats submitted or not to acute stress (20-min swimming and I-h immobilization 25 min apart), preceded or not by chronic stress (2 sessions 2 days apart of 1-h day immobilization for 5-consecutive days). Stress did not alter the reactivity of denuded aorta. Moreover, no alteration in the EC50 values was observed after stress exposure. In intact aortas, acute stress-induced hyporeactivity to noradrenaline similar between strains at both age. Chronic stress potentiated this adaptive response in 6- and 14-week-old Wistar but not in 6-week-old SHR, and did not alter the reactivity of 14-week-old SHR. Maximum response (g) in intact aortas [6-week-old: Wistar 3.25 +/- 0.12, Wistar/acute 1.95 +/- 0.12*, Wistar/chronic 1.36 +/- 0.21*(+), SHR 1.75 +/- 0.11, SHR/acute 0.88 +/- 0.08*, SHR/chronic 0.85 +/- 0.05*; 14-week-old: Wistar 3.83 +/- 0.13, Wistar/acute 2.72 +/- 0.13*, Wistar/chronic 1.91 +/- 0.19*', SHR 4.03 +/- 0.17, SHR/acute 2.26 +/- 0.12*, SHR/chronic 4.10 +/- 0.23; inside the same strain: *P < 0.05 relate to non-stressed rat, (+)P < 0.05 related to acute stressed rat; n = 6-18]. Independent of age and strain, L-NAME and endothelium removal abolished the stress-induced aorta hyporeactivity. Conclusion: the vascular adaptive response to stress is impaired in SHR, independently of the hypertensive state. Moreover, this vascular adaptive response is characterized by endothelial nitric oxide-system hyperactivity in both strains. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Zinc (Zn ++) has been shown as an important physiological inhibitor of pituitary PRL release, and Zn ++ and PRL could be involved in a negative feedback regulatory loop. However, this inhibitory effect has not been detected in humans with regard to thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), dopamine (DA) and histamine (HA) neurotransmitters. In order to investigate this topic, Zn ++ was acutely and chronically administered to five healthy men to observe the probable inhibitory effect on PRL release during insulin-induced hypoglycemia. The positive PRL response to hypoglycemia has generally been considered to be mediated via the hypothalamus by adrenergic, serotoninergic, histaminergic, opioid-peptidergic and TRH neurotransmitters. The results showed that Zn ++ was not able to inhibit the PRL release during insulin-induced hypoglycemia. Under these conditions, Zn ++ does not block hypothalamic neurotransmitters stimulated by hypoglycemia, thus excluding its clinical application in human beings. On the other hand, the effect of acute stress, such as hypoglycemia, on the serum Zn ++ profile was not observed. ©2006 Dustri-Verlag Dr. K. Feistle.

The leukocyte count interpretation on the blood helps on understanding about the possible dysfunction showed by the animal. In general, an abnormal leukogram allows the identification of pathological process. A lot of events lead to an increase in the number of neutrophils, among then, inflammatory process, infection and stress. Dependent on the stress mediator that the animal is submited, the leukocyte alteration will be different. Is important to know how the stress acts on the animal organism, changing the hematological parameters, in order to avoid mistakes on diseases‟ diagnosis. It‟s known that after a stress situation, it‟s expected that stress leukogram appears on the hemogram of the animal. However there are different kinds of stress with different responses. It‟s believed that when the animal is under an acute stress situation, a clinical picture of physiologic leukocytosis occurs which is mediated by the epinephrine. This is characterized by neutrophilia, lymphocytosis, monocytosis and eosinofilia. The physiologic leukocytosis is a transient alteration in the leukogram that occurs within minutes of the stimulus and due to fleeting effect of catecolamines it resolves within 20 to 30 minutes. However, if the animal is under chronicle stress, as solitude, it „s expected to find the stress leukogram on the leukogram, that can be noted especially in dogs. The stress leukogram is characterized by leukocytosis, neutrophilia, lymphopenia, monocytosis and eosinopenia. This kind of stress is induced by the glucocorticoids. It´s important to understand that stress leukogram takes time to occur. The variation on time depends on the animal species, although, in general, the glucocorticoides have a peak effects among 4 to 8 hours, which can last from 24 hours to 2 or 3 days

Purpose: To assess the relationship between the presence of pets in homes of epilepsy patients and the occurrence of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Methods: Parents or relatives of SUDEP patients collected over a ten-year period (2000-2009) in a large epilepsy unit were asked if the patient lived together with any domestic pet at the time of death or not. Patients who did not experience SUDEP served as controls. Results and conclusions: Eleven out of the 1092 included patients (1%) experienced SUDEP, all with refractory symptomatic epilepsy, but none of them had pets in their homes at the time of death. In contrast, the frequency of pet-ownership in the control group (n = 1081) was 61%. According to previous studies there are some indications that human health is directly related to companionship with animals in a way that domestic animals prevent illness and facilitate recovery of patients. Companion animals can buffer reactivity against acute stress, diminish stress perception and improve physical health. These factors may reduce cardiac arrhythmias and seizure frequency, factors related to SUDEP. Companion animals may have a positive effect on well-being, thus irnproving epilepsy outcome. Global warming is a reality and its effects have been widely studied. However, the consequences for marine invertebrates remain poorly understood. Thus, the present study proposed to evaluate the effect of elevated temperature on the innate immune system of Antarctic sea urchin Sterechinus neumayeri. Sea urchins were collected nearby Brazilian Antarctic Station "Comandante Ferraz" and exposed to 0 (control), 2 and 4A degrees C for periods of 48 h, 2, 7 and 14 days. After the experimental periods, coelomic fluid was collected in order to perform the following analyses: coelomocytes differential counting, phagocytic response, adhesion and spreading coelomocytes assay, intranuclear iron crystalloid and ultra structural analysis of coelomocytes. The red sphere cell was considered a biomarker for heat stress, as they increased in acute stress. Besides that, a significant increase in phagocytic indexes was observed at 2A degrees C coinciding with a significant increase of intranuclear iron crystalloid at the same temperature and same time period. Furthermore, significant alterations in cell adhesion and spreading were observed in elevated temperatures. The ultra structural analysis of coelomocytes showed no significant difference across treatments. This was the first time that innate immune response alterations were observed in response to elevated temperature in a Polar echinoid.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) is a limbic structure that is involved in the expression of conditioned contextual fear. Among the numerous neural inputs to the BNST, noradrenergic synaptic terminals are prominent and some evidence suggests an activation of this noradrenergic neurotransmission in the BNST during aversive situations. Here, we have investigated the involvement of the BNST noradrenergic system in the modulation of behavioural and autonomic responses induced by conditioned contextual fear in rats. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Male Wistar rats with cannulae bilaterally implanted into the BNST were submitted to a 10 min conditioning session (6 footshocks, 1.5 ma/ 3 s). Twenty-four hours later freezing and autonomic responses (mean arterial pressure, heart rate and cutaneous temperature) to the conditioning box were measured for 10 min. The adrenoceptor antagonists were administered 10 min before the re-exposure to the aversive context. KEY RESULTS L-propranolol, a non-selective beta-adrenoceptor antagonist, and phentolamine, a non-selective a-adrenoceptor antagonist, reduced both freezing and autonomic responses induced by aversive context. Similar results were observed with CGP20712, a selective beta 1-adrenoceptor antagonist, and WB4101, a selective a1-antagonist, but not with ICI118,551, a selective beta 2-adrenoceptor antagonist or RX821002, a selective a2-antagonist. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS These findings support the idea that noradrenergic neurotransmission in the BNST via a1- and beta 1-adrenoceptors is involved in the expression of conditioned contextual fear.

To test the hypothesis that those who provide care for a spouse diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease would have increased prevalence of carotid artery plaque compared with noncaregiving controls and that prolonged sympathoadrenal arousal to acute stress would relate to this difference. Providing care for a spouse with Alzheimer's disease has been associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, potentially due to the impact of caregiving stress on the atherosclerotic disease process.

In order to determine a stress response, two groups of twenty male golden hamsters were either exposed to a ferret or handled by a human. The hamsters' body temperature and running wheel activity were measured as stress correlates. Half of the hamsters' cages were equipped with a functional running wheel to determine whether the presence of a running wheel might reduce stress. Exposure to the ferret was followed by a significant increase in body temperature and running wheel revolutions: however, running wheel activity did not change after handling. Body temperature increased less after handling in hamsters living in a cage with a functional running wheel than in those with a non-revolving running wheel. This suggests that hamsters with a functional running wheel reacted less strongly to acute stress caused by handling. On the other hand, temperature increase after the exposure to a ferret was not affected by the presence of a running wheel. Both exposure to a ferret and handling caused stress in golden hamsters, as demonstrated by an increase in body temperature (emotional fever). Synthetic glucocorticoids (GC) are used as a clinical therapeutic to stimulate lung development in fetuses that present the risk of preterm delivery. Previous studies have shown that a prenatal exposure to Dexamethasone (DEX) causes a disturbance in normal GC mediation of neuritic outgrowth, cell signaling, and serotonergic systems. Our hypothesis is that a prenatal exposure to DEX during the third trimester of pregnancy alters 5HT1A receptor function. Pregnant dams were injected daily with 150μg/ml/kg of DEX from gestation day 14 through 19. Control dams were treated with and equal volume of saline. Swim stress followed by elevated plus maze testing was conducted on male rats an hour and a half prior to being sacrificed to induce postnatal acute stress. The non-stressed group was also tested and allowed to return to baseline before sacrifice. Hippocampi were analyzed using a radioligand-receptor binding assay and GTPγS35 incorporation (3H-MPPF antagonist and 8-OH-DPAT agonist, respectively).
