Organ volume measurements: comparison between MRI and autopsy findings in infants following sudden unexpected death.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of a semiautomated 3D volume reconstruction method for organ volume measurement by postmortem MRI. METHODS: This prospective study was approved by the institutional review board and the infants' parents gave their consent. Postmortem MRI was performed in 16 infants (1 month to 1 year of age) at 1.5 T within 48 h of their sudden death. Virtual organ volumes were estimated using the Myrian software. Real volumes were recorded at autopsy by water displacement. The agreement between virtual and real volumes was quantified following the Bland and Altman's method. RESULTS: There was a good agreement between virtual and real volumes for brain (mean difference: -0.03% (-13.6 to +7.1)), liver (+8.3% (-9.6 to +26.2)) and lungs (+5.5% (-26.6 to +37.6)). For kidneys, spleen and thymus, the MRI/autopsy volume ratio was close to 1 (kidney: 0.87±0.1; spleen: 0.99±0.17; thymus: 0.94±0.25), but with a less good agreement. For heart, the MRI/real volume ratio was 1.29±0.76, possibly due to the presence of residual blood within the heart. The virtual volumes of adrenal glands were significantly underestimated (p=0.04), possibly due to their very small size during the first year of life. The percentage of interobserver and intraobserver variation was lower or equal to 10%, but for thymus (15.9% and 12.6%, respectively) and adrenal glands (69% and 25.9%). CONCLUSIONS: Virtual volumetry may provide significant information concerning the macroscopic features of the main organs and help pathologists in sampling organs that are more likely to yield histological findings.

Desempenho zootécnico e econômico de juvenis de robalo-peva alimentados com dietas contendo diferentes concentrações proteicas

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho zootécnico e econômico de robalo-peva (Centropomus parallelus) alimentado com seis rações práticas, contendo diferentes concentrações proteicas. As dietas foram formuladas para conter as seguintes concentrações proteicas: 375, 395, 416, 438, 473 e 490 g kg-1. Cada dieta foi fornecida até a saciedade aparente duas vezes ao dia, por 90 dias. Ao final do experimento, a composição corporal dos peixes alimentados com as diferentes dietas não diferiu significativamente. O ganho em peso variou de 2,87±0,09 a 4,74±0,02 g, da menor para a maior concentração proteica. A concentração proteica de 490 g kg-1 levou à redução de 2,86±0,13 R$ kg-1 no custo médio de alimentação, ao aumento de 97,82±4,25% no índice de eficiência econômica, e à redução de 102,91±4,58% no índice de custo. A dieta com a maior concentração proteica e a relação energia/proteína de 7,27 Mcal kg-1 promove os melhores índices zootécnicos e econômicos para juvenis de robalo-peva.

Eficiência simbiótica de estirpes de Cupriavidus necator tolerantes a zinco, cádmio, cobre e chumbo

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a tolerância de estirpes de Cupriavidus necator a zinco, cádmio, cobre e chumbo, além de determinar a eficiência simbiótica das estirpes mais tolerantes em associação a espécies leguminosas com potencial para revegetação. A tolerância foi testada em meio LB, suplementado com 2,5; 5,0; 7,5; 10; 12,5 e 15 mmol L-1 de ZnSO4.7H2O, CdSO4.8H2O, CuSO4.5H2O e PbCl2, respectivamente, em comparação ao controle sem adição de metal. Determinou-se a eficiência simbiótica das quatro estirpes de C. necator mais tolerantes aos metais avaliados (UFLA02-71, UFLA02-73, UFLA01-659 e UFLA01-663), as quais foram inoculadas nas espécies: Leucaena leucocephala, Enterolobium contortisiliquum, Acacia mangium, Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, M. pudica, M. pigra e M. acutistipula. Em vasos com solos, avaliaram-se L. leucocephala, M. pudica e M. caesalpiniifolia e as estirpes UFLA01-659 e UFLA02-71, selecionadas na avaliação de eficiência simbiótica. A estirpe UFLA02-71 proporcionou incrementos de matéria seca da parte aérea de 870% em M. caesalpiniifolia, enquanto que UFLA01-659 proporcionou 885% em M. pudica e 924% em L. leucocephala. As estirpes UFLA01-659 e UFLA02-71, além da alta tolerância a metais pesados, apresentaram eficiência em fixar nitrogênio, em simbiose com essas leguminosas, em solos com rizóbios nativos capazes de nodulá-las, e devem ser avaliadas quanto ao seu potencial de utilização em programas de recuperação de áreas degradadas.

Parametrização e avaliação do modelo DSSAT/Canegro para variedades brasileiras de cana-de-açúcar

O objetivo deste trabalho foi parametrizar e avaliar o modelo DSSAT/Canegro para cinco variedades brasileiras de cana-de-açúcar. A parametrização foi realizada a partir do uso de dados biométricos e de crescimento das variedades CTC 4, CTC 7, CTC 20, RB 86-7515 e RB 83-5486, obtidos em cinco localidades brasileiras. Foi realizada análise de sensibilidade local para os principais parâmetros. A parametrização do modelo foi feita por meio da técnica de estimativa da incerteza de probabilidade generalizada ("generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation", Glue). Para a avaliação das predições, foram utilizados, como indicadores estatísticos, o coeficiente de determinação (R²), o índice D de Willmott e a raiz quadrada do erro-médio (RMSE). As variedades CTC apresentaram índice D entre 0,870 e 0,944, para índice de área foliar, altura de colmo, perfilhamento e teor de sacarose. A variedade RB 83-5486 apresentou resultados similares para teor de sacarose e massa de matéria fresca do colmo, enquanto a variedade RB 86-7515 apresentou valores entre 0,665 e 0,873, para as variáveis avaliadas.

El mercado laboral español situación actual y análisi comparativo con el mercado alemán

La grave situación económica por la que atraviesa España desde 2008 ha puesto de relieve las debilidades que padece el modelo laboral español. Es el continuo incremento de la tasa de desempleo que agrava la crisis actual en este país. España ha destruido más empleo, y más rápidamente, que el resto de principales economías europeas. Los datos recogidos en el último trimestre de 2012 muestran claramente esta situación; la cifra de paro se sitúa en 5.965.000 personas, lo que equivale a un preocupante porcentaje del 26,7 %. Mientras que en el resto de Europa, la media es de; 11,9 %. A todo esto, cabe añadir que la destrucción de empleo ha sido más intensa en ciertos colectivos. Especialmente a la población joven (considerados toda aquella población capacitada para trabajar y con una edad menor o igual a 29 años). La tasa de paro de este colectivo alcanza el 41,7 % del porcentaje total de parados. Lo que equivale a un total de 2.445.000 personas. La incertidumbre a la hora de entrar dentro del mercado de trabajo, los bajos sueldos iniciales y la situación económica general son la gran mayoría de motivos por el que muchos jóvenes decidan abandonar el mercado de trabajo español en búsqueda de nuevas oportunidades en el extranjero. Los destinos más solicitados son; Reino Unido, Alemania y Bélgica. Otro de los aspectos relevantes que agrava la situación económica es el desempleo de larga duración. En el 2012, se disparó hasta llegar al 52,4 %, respecto al paro total en ese mismo año (26,7 %). En el primer trimestre de 2013, el porcentaje aumentó en 3 puntos porcentuales (55,4%), de esta forma, 3.280.400 españoles llevan más de un año esperando una oportunidad de trabajar. De los parados de larga duración, 870.000 tienen menos de 30 años, mientras que 692.400 son mayores de 50 años (un 26,5 % y 21,11 % del total, respectivamente).

Short-term effects of particulate matters on pulse pressure in two general population studies.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the association of short-term exposure to particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters less than 10 μm (PM10) with pulse pressure, SBP, and DBP taking outdoor temperature into account in two large population-based studies in Switzerland. METHODS: We used data from the Bus Santé study including 5605 adults in Geneva and the CoLaus study including 6183 adults in Lausanne. PM10 and meteorological data were measured from fixed monitoring stations. We analyzed the association of short-term exposure to PM10 (on the day of examination visit and up to 7 days before) with pulse pressure, SBP, and DBP by linear regression, controlling for potential confounders and effect modifiers. RESULTS: Average PM10 levels were 22.4 μg/m in Geneva and 31.7 μg/m in Lausanne. In adjusted models, for each 10 μg/m increase in 7-day PM10 average, pulse pressure and SBP increased by 0.583 (95% confidence interval, 0.296-0.870) mmHg and 0.490 (0.056-0.925) mmHg in Geneva, and 0.183 (0.017-0.348) mmHg and 0.036 (0.042-0.561) mmHg in Lausanne, respectively. Stronger associations of pulse pressure and SBP with PM10 were observed when outdoor temperature was above 5°C. CONCLUSION: Positive associations of pulse pressure and SBP with short-term exposure to PM10 were found and replicated in the Swiss adult population. Our results suggest that even low levels of air pollution may substantially impact cardiovascular risk in the general population.

Divergent evolution and purifying selection of the flaA gene sequences in Aeromonas

BACKGROUND: The bacterial flagellum is the most important organelle of motility in bacteria and plays a key role in many bacterial lifestyles, including virulence. The flagellum also provides a paradigm of how hierarchical gene regulation, intricate protein-protein interactions and controlled protein secretion can result in the assembly of a complex multi-protein structure tightly orchestrated in time and space. As if to stress its importance, plants and animals produce receptors specifically dedicated to the recognition of flagella. Aside from motility, the flagellum also moonlights as an adhesion and has been adapted by humans as a tool for peptide display. Flagellar sequence variation constitutes a marker with widespread potential uses for studies of population genetics and phylogeny of bacterial species. RESULTS: We sequenced the complete flagellin gene (flaA) in 18 different species and subspecies of Aeromonas. Sequences ranged in size from 870 (A. allosaccharophila) to 921 nucleotides (A. popoffii). The multiple alignment displayed 924 sites, 66 of which presented alignment gaps. The phylogenetic tree revealed the existence of two groups of species exhibiting different FlaA flagellins (FlaA1 and FlaA2). Maximum likelihood models of codon substitution were used to analyze flaA sequences. Likelihood ratio tests suggested a low variation in selective pressure among lineages, with an omega ratio of less than 1 indicating the presence of purifying selection in almost all cases. Only one site under potential diversifying selection was identified (isoleucine in position 179). However, 17 amino acid positions were inferred as sites that are likely to be under positive selection using the branch-site model. Ancestral reconstruction revealed that these 17 amino acids were among the amino acid changes detected in the ancestral sequence. CONCLUSION: The models applied to our set of sequences allowed us to determine the possible evolutionary pathway followed by the flaA gene in Aeromonas, suggesting that this gene have probably been evolving independently in the two groups of Aeromonas species since the divergence of a distant common ancestor after one or several episodes of positive selection. Early relationship between very preterm infant and mother: The role of infant, maternal and dyadic factors

Pienipainoisen keskosen ja äidin varhainen suhde: Lapsen, äidin ja dyadisten muuttujien vaikutus Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia keskosvauvan ja äidin varhaista suhdetta. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin myös vauvan itkukäyttäytymisen, vauvan sylissä olon ja äidin masentuneisuuden yhteyttä äidin ja keskosvauvan varhaiseen suhteeseen. Tutkimusryhmät koostuivat 32:sta (tutkimus I-II) ja 38:sta (tutkimus III-IV) keskosena syntyneestä vauvasta (syntymäpaino < 1501 g tai GI < 32 viikkoa) sekä 46:sta täysiaikaisena syntyneestä terveestä verrokkivauvasta. Lapsen ja äidin vuorovaikutusta arvioitiin 6 ja 12 kuukauden iässä (korjattu ikä) PCERAmenetelmällä. Äidin mielikuvia lapsestaan tutkittiin WMCI-haastattelulla, kun lapsi oli 12 kuukautta. Baby Day Diary -menetelmää käytettiin vauvan itkukäyttäytymisen ja sylissä olon keston mittaamisessa vauvan ollessa 5 kuukautta. Äidin masentuneisuutta arvioitiin EDPS-lomakkeella, kun lapsi oli 6 kuukautta. Tulokset osoittivat, että turvallisten kiintymyssuhdemielikuvien määrä tai vuorovaikutuksen laatu eivät keskosvauvan äideillä eronneet täysiaikaisina syntyneiden vauvojen äitien vastaavista. Ryhmien välillä ei löytynyt eroja myöskään dyadisen vuorovaikutuksen laadussa. Keskosena syntyneet lapset olivat kuitenkin vetäytyvämpiä ja heillä oli laadullisesti heikommat keskittymisen ja leikin taidot vuorovaikutustilanteessa 12 kuukauden iässä täysiaikaisina syntyneisiin lapsiin nähden. Lisäksi äidin masentuneisuus ja lapsen pitkittynyt itkuisuus olivat negatiivisessa yhteydessä vuorovaikutuksen laatuun keskosvauvojen ryhmässä. Vauvan itkukertojen määrän, sylissä olon keston sekä äidin ja vauvan vuorovaikutuksen laadun välillä löytyi positiivinen yhteys ainoastaan keskosena syntyneiden lasten ryhmässä. Tulostemme perusteelle toteamme, että lapsen ennenaikainen syntymä itsessään ei näytä muodostavan riskiä äidin vuorovaikutuksen laadulle tai turvalliselle kiintymyssuhteelle. Yhdessä muiden riskitekijöiden kanssa keskosuus kuitenkin altistaa vauvat ja heidän äitinsä varhaisen vuorovaikutuksen ongelmille. Lisäksi tuloksemme viittaavat siihen, että vauvan itku ja siitä seuraava sylissä olo toimivat suojaavana mekanismina pienipainoisen keskosen ja äidin varhaisessa suhteessa.

The effects of social networks on work-team effectiveness

This is a study of team social networks, their antecedents and outcomes. In focusing attention on the structural configuration of the team this research contributes to a new wave of thinking concerning group social capital. The research site was a random sample of Finnish work organisations. The data consisted of 499 employees in 76 teams representing 48 different organisations. A systematic literature review and quantitative methods were used in conducting the research: the former primarily to establish the current theoretical position on the relationships among the variables and the latter to test these relationships. Social network analysis was the primary method used in identifying the social-network relations among the work-team members. The first and key contribution of this study is that it relates the structuralnetwork properties of work teams to behavioural outcomes, attitudinal outcomes and, ultimately, team performance. Moreover, it shows that addressing attitudinal outcomes is also important in terms of team performance; attitudinal outcomes (team identity) mediated the relationship between the team’s performance and its social network. The second contribution is that it examines the possible antecedents of the social structure. It is thus one response to Salancik’s (1995) call for a network theory in that it explains why certain network characteristics exist. Itdemonstrates that irrespective of whether or not a team is heterogeneous in terms of age or gender, educational diversity may protect it from centralisation. However, heterogeneity in terms of gender turned out to have a negative impact on density. Thirdly, given the observation that the benefits of (team) networks are typically theorised and modelled without reference to the nature of the relationships comprising the structure, the study directly tested whether team knowledge mediated the effects of instrumental and expressive network relationships on team performance. Furthermore, with its focus on expressive networks that link the workplace to a more informal world, which have been rather neglected in previous research, it enhances knowledge of teams andnetworks. The results indicate that knowledge sharing fully mediates the influence of complementarities between dense and fragmented instrumental network relationships, thus providing empirical validation of the implicit understanding that networks transfer knowledge. Fourthly, the study findings suggest that an optimal configuration of the work-team social-network structure combines both bridging and bonding social relationships.
