An optimal weighted-average congestion based pricing scheme for enhanced QoS, , LNCS 4882, 2007

Pricing is an effective tool to control congestion and achieve quality of service (QoS) provisioning for multiple differentiated levels of service. In this paper, we consider the problem of pricing for congestion control in the case of a network of nodes under a single service class and multiple queues, and present a multi-layered pricing scheme. We propose an algorithm for finding the optimal state dependent price levels for individual queues, at each node. The pricing policy used depends on a weighted average queue length at each node. This helps in reducing frequent price variations and is in the spirit of the random early detection (RED) mechanism used in TCP/IP networks. We observe in our numerical results a considerable improvement in performance using our scheme over that of a recently proposed related scheme in terms of both throughput and delay performance. In particular, our approach exhibits a throughput improvement in the range of 34 to 69 percent in all cases studied (over all routes) over the above scheme.

Climate change and crop yields in the Indian Cardamom Hills, 1978-2007 CE

In this study we analyzed climate and crop yields data from Indian cardamom hills for the period 1978-2007 to investigate whether there were significant changes in weather elements, and if such changes have had significant impact on the production of spices and plantation crops. Spatial and temporal variations in air temperatures (maximum and minimum), rainfall and relative humidity are evident across stations. The mean air temperature increased significantly during the last 30 years; the greatest increase and the largest significant upward trend was observed in the daily temperature. The highest increase in minimum temperature was registered for June (0.37A degrees C/18 years) at the Myladumpara station. December and January showed greater warming across the stations. Rainfall during the main monsoon months (June-September) showed a downward trend. Relative humidity showed increasing and decreasing trends, respectively, at the cardamom and tea growing tracts. The warming trend coupled with frequent wet and dry spells during the summer is likely to have a favorable effect on insect pests and disease causing organisms thereby pesticide consumption can go up both during excess rainfall and drought years. The incidence of many minor pest insects and disease pathogens has increased in the recent years of our study along with warming. Significant and slight increases in the yield of small cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum M.) and coffee (Coffea arabica), respectively, were noticed in the recent years.; however the improvement of yield in tea (Thea sinensis) and black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) has not been seen in our analysis.

Remote sensing study of snowline altitude at the end of melting season, Chandra-Bhaga basin, Himachal Pradesh, 1980-2007

Glaciers have a direct relation with climate change. The equilibrium line altitude (ELA) is the most useful parameter to study the effect of climate change on glaciers. The ELA is a theoretical snowline at which the glacier mass balance is zero. Snowline altitude (SLA) at the end of melting season is generally regarded as the ELA. Glaciers of Chandra-Bhaga basin in Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh were chosen to study the ELA, using satellite images from 1980 to 2007. A total of 19 glaciers from the Chandra-Bhaga basin were identified and selected to carry out the study of ELA variation over 27 years. This study reveals that the mean SLA of the sub-basin has increased from 5009 +/- 61m to 5401 +/- 21m from 1980 to 2007. The study is in agreement with the reported increase in the temperature and decrease in winter snowfall of North-West Himalaya in the last century.

Surface freshwater storage and variability in the Amazon basin from multi-satellite observations, 1993-2007

The amount of water stored and moving through the surface water bodies of large river basins (river, floodplains, wetlands) plays a major role in the global water and biochemical cycles and is a critical parameter for water resources management. However, the spatiotemporal variations of these freshwater reservoirs are still widely unknown at the global scale. Here, we propose a hypsographic curve approach to estimate surface freshwater storage variations over the Amazon basin combining surface water extent from a multi-satellite-technique with topographic data from the Global Digital Elevation Model (GDEM) from Advance Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER). Monthly surface water storage variations for 1993-2007 are presented, showing a strong seasonal and interannual variability, and are evaluated against in situ river discharge and precipitation. The basin-scale mean annual amplitude of similar to 1200 km(3) is in the range of previous estimates and contributes to about half of the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) total water storage variations. For the first time, we map the surface water volume anomaly during the extreme droughts of 1997 (October-November) and 2005 (September-October) and found that during these dry events the water stored in the river and floodplains of the Amazon basin was, respectively, similar to 230 (similar to 40%) and 210 (similar to 50%) km(3) below the 1993-2007 average. This new 15 year data set of surface water volume represents an unprecedented source of information for future hydrological or climate modeling of the Amazon. It is also a first step toward the development of such database at the global scale.

Determinacion de brucelosis en la poblacion canina en ocho barrios del distrito dos de Managua utilizando el metodo de Rosa de Bengala y Rivanol en Septiembre - Diciembre 2007

En Nicaragua se desconoce la situación actual nacional de Brucelosis en la población canina, debido a que solo se ha realizado un estudio en la zona urbana y suburbana de la ciudad de León acerca de esta enfermedad en esta especie. La importancia del estudio consiste en beneficiar a propietarios y criadores de razas caninas, a los profesionales de la medicina veterinaria que se dedican a las especies menores y técnicos de laboratorios, brindándoles información acerca de la situación de esta enfermedad para ser tomada en cuenta en su labor diaria. Con el objetivo de determinar la prevalencia de brucelosis en caninos con la colaboración del ministerio de salud (MINSA) durante la jornada de vacunación antirrábica se realizó un muestreo serológico en canes en los barrios Bo Monseñor Lezcano, Las Palmas, Santa Ana Norte, San Sebastián, Bóer, San José, Acahualinca y Batahola Norte del Distrito II de Managua en los meses de Septiembre a Diciembre del año 2007. Se recolectó un total de 100 sueros de canes de ambos sexos, sin categorizarlos por su raza y edad en el momento de la toma de las muestras, las cuales se analizaron por el método Rosa de Bengala (antígeno Brucella abortus cepa 1119-3)en el Centro Veterinario de Diagnóstico de investigación, Unidad de Microbiología UNAN -León y como prueba confirmatoria se utilizó Rivanol 1% en el laboratorio del MAGFOR Unidad de Sanidad Animal León. Los resultados obtenidos para el primer método fue de un reactor correspondiente una hembra de 2 meses de edad de raza no definida del barrio Las Palmas que posteriormente resultó negativa a la prueba de Rivanol. La prevalencia encontrada es del 0%.

Diagnostico de prevalencia a leptospirosis canina con respecto a las variables edad, sexo y raza, en ocho barrios del distrito 2 de la ciudad de Managua Septiembre 2007 - Enero 2008

La leptospirosis es considerada una de las zoonosis más difundidas en el mundo entero. El perro actúa como un potencial diseminador de esta enfermedad ya que mantiene una estrecha relación con el hombre, y al mismo tiempo con otros animales tanto domésticos como salvajes. Con el objetivo de conocer la presencia de leptospirosis canina, se realizó estudio en ocho barrios del distrito dos de la cuidad de Managua entre 8 de septiembre al 9 de diciembre 2007. Se realizó un muestreo de 76 canes, correspondiente al 5% del total de canes en los ocho barrios. Se extrajo 3ml de sangre de la vena safena externa, luego de procesarlas para separar el suero sanguíneo del plasma mediante centrifugación, fueron trasladadas al laboratorio del Centro Veterinario de Diagnóstico e Investigación CEVEDI, UNAN-León, para su análisis mediante los métodos ELISA y MAT. De acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos mediante la prueba ELISA un 93.4%, 71 canes, son negativos y un 6.6%, o bien 5 especímenes, son seropositivos a Leptospira spp. Según los resultados de la prueba de micro aglutinación MAT, el 96.1% de la población muestreada es negativa y el 3.9% es positiva a leptospirosis encontrándose los siguientes serovares canico/a, icterohemorragiae, pyrogenes.

Visualization Summit 2007: Ten research goals for 2010

At the first international Visualization Summit, more than 100 international researchers and practitioners defined and assessed nine original and important research goals in the context of Visualization Science, and proposed methods for achieving these goals by 2010. The synthesis of the whole event is presented in the 10th research goal. This article contributes a building block for systemizing visualization research by proposing mutually elaborated research goals with defined milestones. Such a consensus on where to go together is only one step toward establishing visualization science in the long-term perspective as a discipline with comparable relevance to chemistry, mathematics, language, or history. First, this article introduces the conference setting. Second, it describes the research goals and findings from the nine workshops. Third, a survey among 62 participants about the originality and importance of each research goal is presented and discussed. Finally, the article presents a synthesis of the nine research goals in the form of a 10th research goal, namely Visualizing Future Cities. The article is relevant for visualization researchers, trend scouts, research programme directors who define the topics that get funds. © 2007 Palgr aveMacmillan Ltd. All rights reserved.
