CYP19A1 fine-mapping and Mendelian randomization: Estradiol is causal for endometrial cancer

Candidate gene studies have reported CYP19A1 variants to be associated with endometrial cancer and with estradiol (E2) concentrations. We analyzed 2937 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 6608 endometrial cancer cases and 37 925 controls and report the first genome wide-significant association between endometrial cancer and a CYP19A1 SNP (rs727479 in intron 2, P=4.8x10(-11)). SNP rs727479 was also among those most strongly associated with circulating E2 concentrations in 2767 post-menopausal controls (P=7.4x10(-8)). The observed endometrial cancer odds ratio per rs727479 A-allele (1.15, CI=1.11-1.21) is compatible with that predicted by the observed effect on E2 concentrations (1.09, CI=1.03-1.21), consistent with the hypothesis that endometrial cancer risk is driven by E2. From 28 candidate-causal SNPs, 12 co-located with three putative gene-regulatory elements and their risk alleles associated with higher CYP19A1 expression in bioinformatical analyses. For both phenotypes, the associations with rs727479 were stronger among women with a higher BMI (Pinteraction=0.034 and 0.066 respectively), suggesting a biologically plausible gene-environment interaction.

A novel use of near infrared spectroscopy: ageing deepwater sharks

To age sharks, the growth bands in the shark vertebrae (like the rings in a tree) or on the spines in front of each dorsal fin (which only some sharks have) are manually counted using a microscope. This is time-consuming and is only possible on dead animals. NIR spectroscopy is shown to be able to detect age in dorsal fin spines of sharks and hand-held NIR spectroscopy units could potentially be used for ageing of sharks in the field, at sea, using a hand-held unit to scan the fin spine on a live animal.

Factors associated with self-reported driver sleepiness and incidents in city bus drivers

Driver fatigue has received increased attention during recent years and is now considered to be a major contributor to approximately 15–30% of all crashes. However, little is known about fatigue in city bus drivers. It is hypothesized that city bus drivers suffer from sleepiness, which is due to a combination of working conditions, lack of health and reduced sleep quantity and quality. The overall aim with the current study is to investigate if severe driver sleepiness, as indicated by subjective reports of having to fight sleep while driving, is a problem for city based bus drivers in Sweden and if so, to identify the determinants related to working conditions, health and sleep which contribute towards this. The results indicate that driver sleepiness is a problem for city bus drivers, with 19% having to fight to stay awake while driving the bus 2–3 times each week or more and nearly half experiencing this at least 2–4 times per month. In conclusion, severe sleepiness, as indicated by having to fight sleep during driving, was common among the city bus drivers. Severe sleepiness correlated with fatigue related safety risks, such as near crashes.

Control of Agent Swarms using Generalized Centroidal Cyclic Pursuit Laws

One of the major tasks in swarm intelligence is to design decentralized but homogenoeus strategies to enable controlling the behaviour of swarms of agents. It has been shown in the literature that the point of convergence and motion of a swarm of autonomous mobile agents can be controlled by using cyclic pursuit laws. In cyclic pursuit, there exists a predefined cyclic connection between agents and each agent pursues the next agent in the cycle. In this paper we generalize this idea to a case where an agent pursues a point which is the weighted average of the positions of the remaining agents. This point correspond to a particular pursuit sequence. Using this concept of centroidal cyclic pursuit, the behavior of the agents is analyzed such that, by suitably selecting the agents' gain, the rendezvous point of the agents can be controlled, directed linear motion of the agents can be achieved, and the trajectories of the agents can be changed by switching between the pursuit sequences keeping some of the behaviors of the agents invariant. Simulation experiments are given to support the analytical proofs.

Temperature dependent magnetic, dielectric and Raman studies of partially disordered La2NiMnO6

We report a detailed magnetic, dielectric and Raman studies on partially disordered and biphasic double perovskite La2NiMnO6. DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements show two magnetic anomalies at T-C1 similar to 270 K and T-C2 similar to 240 K, which may indicate the ferromagnetic ordering of the monoclinic and rhombohedral phases, respectively. A broad peak at a lower temperature (T-sg similar to 70 K) is also observed indicating a spin-glass transition due to partial anti-site disorder of Ni2+ and Mn4+ ions. Unlike the pure monoclinic phase, the biphasic compound exhibits a broad but a clear dielectric anomaly around 270 K which is a signature of magneto-dielectric effect. Temperature-dependent Raman studies between the temperature range 12-300 K in a wide spectral range from 220 cm(-1) to 1530 cm(-1) reveal a strong renormalization of the first as well as second-order Raman modes associated with the (Ni/Mn)O-6 octahedra near T-C1 implying a strong spin-phonon coupling. In addition, an anomaly is seen in the vicinity of spin-glass transition temperature in the temperature dependence of the frequency of the anti-symmetric stretching vibration of the octahedra. 大庆RP-3航空煤油热物性分析

针对广泛应用于超燃冲压发动机的吸热碳氢燃料,简要介绍了用于模拟燃料热物理特性的替代燃料方法和广义对应状态法则.以大庆RP-3航空煤油为例,选择了一个由49%（摩尔比）正十烷,44%1,3,5-三甲基环己烷以及7%正丙基苯组成的替代煤油用来模拟RP-3航空煤油进行热物理特性研究,并采用广义对应状态法则对替代煤油热力学和输运特性进行了数值研究.在此基础上,提出了预测超临界态流体通过音速喷管流量的新方法并得到了实验验证.

Evaluación preliminar de dos variedades de frijol común (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) inoculadas en diferentes etapas fenológicas con el virus del mosaico común del frijol BCMV

Con el objetivo de evaluar la respuesta de dos variedades de frijol Phaseolus vulgaris L. al virus del mosaico común del frijol (BCMV) se llevó acabo este trabajo en dos etapas de investigación; La etapa I se realizó en la Universidad Nacional Agraria, en los meses de julio a septiembre de 1991, y la etapa II en la estación experimental La Compañía, en los meses de octubre a diciembre de 1991. Para la etapa I, se sembraron en 40 maceteras, semillas de frijol de las variedades Criolla A-1936 y Revolución 79. En la etapa II los tratamientos estaban arreglados en un Bloque Completamente al Azar en un arreglo de parcelas divididas con tres repeticiones. En las dos etapas las variedades fueron inoculadas mecánicamente en tres momentos a los 7, 15, y 21 días después de la emergencia (DDE), y un testigo sin inocular en la etapa I. Se describieron los síntomas y se tomaron los datos de rendimiento. En las dos etapas de investigación ambas variedades resultaron susceptibles al virus. Tendiendo a ser más afectada en los rendimientos la variedad Revolución 79 que la Criolla a-1936 en la etapa II. El momento de inoculación en el que las variedades fueron más afectadas fue a los 15 DDE y no a los 7 DDE y de manera más notable en la variedad Criolla A-1936, esta respuesta se atribuye a: la temperatura, la concentración del virus y a la respuesta de hipersensibilidad en el caso particular de la variedad Criolla A-1936.

A resonant micromachined electrostatic charge sensor

A micromachined electrometer, based on the concept of a variable capacitor, has been designed, modeled, fabricated, and tested. The device presented in this paper functions as a modulated variable capacitor, wherein a dc charge to be measured is up-modulated and converted to an ac voltage output, thus improving the signal-to-noise ratio. The device was fabricated in a commercial standard SOI micromachining process without the need for any additional processing steps. The electrometer was tested in both air and vacuum at room temperature. In air, it has a charge-to-voltage conversion gain of 2.06 nV/e, and a measured charge noise floor of 52.4 e/rtHz. To reduce the effects of input leakage current, an electrically isolated capacitor has been introduced between the variable capacitor and input to sensor electronics. Methods to improve the sensitivity and resolution are suggested while the long-term stability of these sensors is modeled and discussed. © 2006 IEEE.

Self-aligned, gated arrays of individual nanotube and nanowire emitters

We demonstrate the production of integrated-gate nanocathodes which have a single carbon nanotube or silicon nanowire/whisker per gate aperture. The fabrication is based on a technologically scalable, self-alignment process in which a single lithographic step is used to define the gate, insulator, and emitter. The nanotube-based gated nanocathode array has a low turn-on voltage of 25 V and a peak current of 5 μA at 46 V, with a gate current of 10 nA (i.e., 99% transparency). These low operating voltage cathodes are potentially useful as electron sources for field emission displays or miniaturizing electron-based instrumentation.
