Several widely correlatable intervals of laminated Thalassiothrix diatom mat deposits occur in Neogene sediments recovered from the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. The presence of laminated sediments in extensive areas of the deep open ocean floor raises fundamental questions concerning the cause of preservation of the laminations and the nature of the benthic environment during episodes of mat deposition. Traditional explanations for the preservation of laminations have centered on restriction of dissolved oxygen. Studies of benthic foraminifers through the laminated intervals show no evidence for an increase in absolute or relative abundance of species characteristic of a low oxygen environment, but rather a decrease in relative abundance of infaunal forms attesting to the impenetrability of the diatom meshwork formed by the interlocking Thalassiothrix frustules. These results support evidence from coring of the high tensile strength of the Thalassiothrix laminations suggesting that the diatom meshwork was of sufficient tensile strength and impenetrability to suppress infaunal benthic activity. Comparison of the relative abundances of foraminifers in the enclosing ôbackgroundö sediment of foraminifer nannofossil ooze and the laminated diatom oozes shows that some epifaunal species (e.g., Cibicides spp.) increase in relative abundance within the laminated sediment, whereas others (e.g., Epistominella exigua) show a marked decrease in relative abundance. Other species show more complex changes in abundance related to the occurrence of the laminated sediments, which may indicate a combination of controls that include the physical nature of the substrate and the amount of organic flux.

We report high temporal resolution osmium isotopes records of bulk sediment and sediment leachates from DSDP Site 480 (Gulf of California) over the last 30 ka; from ODP Site 849 (Eastern equatorial Pacific) from the last 200 ka and from ODP Site 1002C (Cariaco Basin) across the 9-17 ka time interval in order to critically evaluate claims of a global 10% shift in the 187Os/188Os of seawater from glacial to interglacial intervals. We use organic-rich continental margin sites and carbonate-rich pelagic sites to isolate the temporal variations of the osmium seawater isotopic composition. Our results reveal that variations in 187Os/188Os fail to correlate with global changes in temperature across glacials/interglacials cycles as previously claimed. Instead, these results indicate differences of a few percent in the measured 187Os/188Os between each oceanic basin. We argue that these differences strongly suggest that seawater is not well homogenized with respect to its Os isotope composition.

Suites of basalts drilled during Legs 127 and 128 can be distinguished by their mineral assemblages and compositions of phenocrysts and groundmass phases. An upper suite of plagioclase phyric basaltic sills with a groundmass composed of plagioclase, augite, and magnetite was recovered from Site 794. The upper, evolved part of this suite is highly plagioclase phyric, including calcic plagioclases (~An90). The most primitive, lower part of this upper suite, in addition, contains olivine, but lacks calcic plagioclase. A lower suite at Site 794 is plagioclase and olivine phyric to aphyric basaltic sills and flows with a groundmass of plagioclase, augite, olivine (~Fo75-83), and magnetite. At Site 795, plagioclase and augite phyric basalts and andesites were recovered. The relatively low Ti and Cr contents of augite of these basalts suggest typical arc tholeiitic parental magmas. Two suites of basalt were recovered from Site 797, an upper suite of plagioclase and olivine phyric to aphyric olivine basalts, and a lower suite of evolved plagioclase phyric basaltic sills. The most evolved sills at both sites lack olivine as phenocryst and groundmass phases, while this phase is present in the relatively primitive sills. The olivine-bearing suites contain plagioclase with relatively low potassium content and augite with relatively high sodium content. An exception is the olivine-bearing sills of the upper suite at Site 794 that contains plagioclase with relatively high potassium content similar to the associated olivine-free sills. The olivine-free suites contain plagioclase with high potassium content and augite with low sodium content and have the most evolved compositions of any of the Japan Sea rocks.
