Detailed paleomagnetic investigations are reported for 283 specimens, sampled from three closely spaced Ocean Drilling Program Leg 135 cores from the Lau Basin. These specimens cover three rather similar records of the reversed Cobb Mountain short polarity event, having an age of about 1.12 m.y. On the basis of a very detailed subsampling every 0.6 cm, we found that the transition times for the Cobb Mountain geomagnetic polarity event, as seen in the three Lau Basin sediment records, appear to have been as short as 0.6-1.0 k.y., although the duration of the normal-polarity event itself lasted only about 17 ± 4 k.y. The older (R to N) transition as well as the younger (N to R) transition show virtual geomagnetic paths roughly along the Americas, but shifted some 30° ± 10° to the east. These paths conflict with Cobb Mountain transition paths recorded in sediments from the Labrador Sea and the North Atlantic, but they are in fair accordance with sediment records from the Celebes and Sulu seas when corrected for differences in site longitude, suggesting that the transitional fields are dominated by nonaxial, high-order spherical harmonics.

The climate evolution of the South Shetland Islands during the last c. 2000 years is inferred from the multiproxy analyses of a long (928 cm) sediment core retrieved from Maxwell Bay off King George Island. The vertical sediment flux at the core location is controlled by summer melting processes that cause sediment-laden meltwater plumes to form. These leave a characteristic signature in the sediments of NE Maxwell Bay. We use this signature to distinguish summer and winter-dominated periods. During the Medieval Warm Period, sediments are generally finer which indicates summer-type conditions. In contrast, during the Little Ice Age (LIA) sediments are generally coarser and are indicative of winter-dominated conditions. Comparison with Northern and Southern Hemisphere, Antarctic, and global temperature reconstructions reveals that the mean grain-size curve from Maxwell Bay closely resembles the curve of the global temperature reconstruction. We show that the medieval warming occurred earlier in the Southern than in the Northern Hemisphere, which might indicate that the warming was driven by processes occurring in the south. The beginning of the LIA appears to be almost synchronous in both hemispheres. The warming after the LIA closely resembles the Northern Hemisphere record which might indicate this phase of cooling was driven by processes occurring in the north. Although the recent rapid regional warming is clearly visible, the Maxwell Bay record does not show the dominance of summer-type sediments until the 1970s. Continued warming in this area will likely affect the marine ecosystem through meltwater induced turbidity of the surface waters as well as an extension of the vegetation period due to the predicted decrease of sea ice in this area.

Sites 759 through 764 were drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 122 on the Exmouth and Wombat plateaus off northwest Australia, eastern Indian Ocean. Radiolarian recovery was generally poor due to unsuitable lithofacies. A few Quaternary radiolarian faunas were recovered from most of the sites. Rare and poorly preserved Oligocene and Eocene radiolarian faunas were recovered from Holes 760A, 761B, 761C, and 762B. Poorly preserved Cretaceous radiolarians occur in samples from Holes 761B, 762C, 763B, and 763C. Chert intervals from Cores 122-761B-28X, 122-761C-5R, and 122-761C-6R contain moderately well-preserved Cretaceous radiolarian faunas (upper Albian, mid- to upper Cenomanian, and mid-Albian, respectively). Rare fragments of Upper Triassic radiolarians were recovered from sections in Holes 759B, 760B, and 764A. The only well-preserved pre-Quaternary radiolarians are in lower and upper Paleocene faunas (Bekoma campechensis Zone) recovered from Site 761, Sections 122-761B-16X-1 to 122-761C-19X-CC. The composition of these faunas differs somewhat from that of isolated coeval Paleocene faunas from Deep Sea Drilling Project sites in the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, tropical Pacific, eastern Indian Ocean, and near Spain and North Africa, as well as from several on-land sites in North America, Cuba, and the USSR.
