The clusters [Fe3(CO)11(RCN)] (1: R = Me, C3H5, C6H5, or C6H4-2-Me) have been prepared at low temperature from [Fe3(CO)12] and RCN in the presence of Me3NO. Compounds 1 react essentially quantitatively with a wide range of two-electron donors, L, (viz.: CO, PPh3, P(OMe)3, PPh2H, PPh2Me, PF3, CyNC (Cy = cyclohexyl), P(OEt)3, SbPh3, PBu3, AsPh3, or SnR2 (R = CH(SiMe3)2)) to give [Fe3(CO)11L] (2). In some cases (2), on treatment with Me3NO and then L′ (L′ = a second two-electron donor) yields [Fe3(CO)10LL′] in high yield. The crystal and molecular structures of 1 (L = NCC6H4Me-2) have been determined by a full single crystal structure analysis, and shown to have an axial nitrile coordinated at the unique iron atom, with two CO groups bridging the other two metal atoms.

The stannylene [SnR2] (R = CH(SiMe3)2) reacts in different ways with the three dodecacarbonyls of the iron triad: [Fe3(CO)12] gives [Fe2(CO)8(μ-SnR2)], [Ru3(CO)12] gives the planar pentametallic cluster [Ru3(CO)10(μ-SnR2)2], for which a full structural analysis is reported, while [Os3(CO)12] fails to react. Different products are also obtained from three nitrile derivatives: [Fe3-(CO)11(MeCN)] gives [Fe2(CO)6(μ-SnR2)2], which has a structure significantly different from that of known Fe2Sn2 clusters, [Ru3(CO)10(MeCN)2] gives the pentametallic cluster described above, while [Os3(CO)10(MeCN)2] gives the isostructural osmium analogue, which shows the unusual feature of a CO group bridging two osmium atoms.

Reaction of five 4R-benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazones (R = OCH3, CH3, H, Cl and NO2) with [ Ru(PPh3)(3)(-CO)(H) Cl] in refluxing methanol in the presence of a base (NEt3) affords complexes of two different types, viz. 1-R and 2-R. In the 1-R complexes the thiosemicarbazone is coordinated to ruthenium as a dianionic tridentate C,N,S-donor via C-H bond activation. Two triphenylphosphines and a carbonyl are also coordinated to ruthenium. The tricoordinated thiosemicarbazone ligand is sharing the same equatorial plane with ruthenium and the carbonyl, and the PPh3 ligands are mutually trans. In the 2-R complexes the thiosemicarbazone ligand is coordinated to ruthenium as a monoanionic bidentate N, S-donor forming a four-membered chelate ring with a bite angle of 63.91(11)degrees. Two triphenylphosphines, a carbonyl and a hydride are also coordinated to ruthenium. The coordinated thiosemicarbazone ligand, carbonyl and hydride constitute one equatorial plane with the metal at the center, where the carbonyl is trans to the coordinated nitrogen of the thiosemicarbazone and the hydride is trans to the sulfur. The two triphenylphosphines are trans. Structures of the 1-CH3 and 2-CH3 complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. All the complexes show intense transitions in the visible region, which are assigned, based on DFT calculations, to transitions within orbitals of the thiosemicarbazone ligand. Cyclic voltammetry on the complexes shows two oxidations of the coordinated thiosemicarbazone on the positive side of SCE and a reduction of the same ligand on the negative side.

Co/Al(2)O(3) Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts promoted with different quantities of Group 11 metals (Cu, Ag, Au) were characterized and tested. The presence of relatively small quantities of such metals enhanced Co reducibility and, in the cases of Ag and Au, improved the surface Co metal active site densities. EXAFS experiments with the most loaded catalyst samples show that only Co-Co and Me-Me (Me = Cu, Ag and Au) coordination could be observed. This suggests that the greater fraction of the metals form different phases. However, the reduction promoting effect of the Group 11 metal is severely hampered once the catalyst receives a mild passivation treatment following primary reduction. An explanation in terms of promoter segregation during primary reduction is proposed. At lower promoter levels (0.83%Ag and 1.51%Au) and higher Ag levels (2.76%), significant gains in Co active site densities were achieved resulting in improved CO conversion levels relative to the unpromoted catalyst. Moreover, slight decreases in light product (e.g., CH(4)) selectivity and slight increases in C(5)+ selectivity were achieved. At high Au loading (5.05%), however, too much Au was loaded which, although significantly increasing the fraction of Co reduced, blocked Co surface sites and resulted in decreased Co conversion rates. While Cu facilitated Co reduction, the increased fraction of reduced Co did not translate to improved active site densities. It appears that a fraction of Cu tended to cover the rim of Co clusters, resulting in decreases in CO conversion rates and detrimental increases in light product selectivity. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Levels of Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu and Mn were determinated by FAAS in the tea and dry matter from senescent leaf from Montrichardia linifera, plant used in folk medicine Amazon. The content of these metals that are transferred of the leaf to the infusions have presented significant reductions, however, the Mn values in the infusion may exceed the tolerable daily intake (11 mg) if consumption of this tea is greater than 1.0 L per day. So the tea of senescent leaves of M. linifera may be considered as a toxic beverage and thus its use is not advised.
