Binary and ternary blends of nylon-6/low density polyethylene (nylon-6/LDPE) and Nylon-6/LDPE/poly(ethylene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) were prepared by melt mixing. The blends exhibit two phase morphology with LDPE dispersed in the form of spherical domains in the nylon-6 matrix. The mechanical properties of the blends were measured by standard methods. It is shown that the use of the epoxy copolymer as a compatibilizer improves the impact strength of the blend as compared to nylon-6, which is attributed to better stress transfer across the interface due to the compatibilizer. The data for each mechanical property were also fitted into a best fit model equation and the method of steepest ascent was applied to arrive at the optimum composition of the blend for that property.

A transient macroscopic model is developed for studying heat and mass transfer in a single-pass laser surface alloying process, with particular emphasis on non-equilibrium solidification considerations. The solution for species concentration distribution requires suitable treatment of non-equilibrium mass transfer conditions. In this context, microscopic features pertaining to non-equilibrium effects on account of solutal undercooling are incorporated through the formulation of a modified partition-coefficient. The effective partition-coefficient is numerically modeled by Means of a number of macroscopically observable parameters related to the solidifying domain. The numerical model is so developed that the modifications on account of non-equilibrium solidification considerations can be conveniently implemented in existing numerical codes based on equilibrium solidification considerations.

Picosecond time-resolved resonance Raman spectra of the A (intramolecular charge transfer, ICT) state of DMABN, DMABN-d(6) and DMABN-N-15 have been obtained. The isotopic shifts identify the nu (s)(ph-N) mode as a band at 1281 cm(-1). The similar to 96 cm(-1) downshift of this mode from its ground state frequency rules out the electronic coupling PICT model and unequivocally supports the electronic decoupling TICT model. However, our results suggest some pyramidal character of the A state amino conformation.

A systematic approach is developed for scaling analysis of momentum, heat and species conservation equations pertaining to the case of solidification of a binary mixture. The problem formulation and description of boundary conditions are kept fairly general, so that a large class of problems can be addressed. Analysis of the momentum equations coupled with phase change considerations leads to the establishment of an advection velocity scale. Analysis of the energy equation leads to an estimation of the solid layer thickness. Different regimes corresponding to different dominant modes of transport are simultaneously identified. A comparative study involving several cases of possible thermal boundary conditions is also performed. Finally, a scaling analysis of the species conservation equation is carried out, revealing the effect of a non-equilibrium solidification model on solute segregation and species distribution. It is shown that non-equilibrium effects result in an enhanced macrosegregation compared with the case of an equilibrium model. For the sake of assessment of the scaling analysis, the predictions are validated against corresponding computational results.

Organic nanoparticles consisting of single conjugated polymer chains were investigated as a function of degree of conjugation by means of single-molecule spectroscopy. The degree of conjugation was synthetically controlled. For highly conjugated chains, singlet excitons are efficiently funneled over nanometer distances to a small number of sites. In contrast, chains with less conjugation and a high number of saturated bonds do not exhibit energy funneling due to a highly disordered conformation.

A three- dimensional, transient model is developed for studying heat transfer, fluid flow, and mass transfer for the case of a single- pass laser surface alloying process. The coupled momentum, energy, and species conservation equations are solved using a finite volume procedure. Phase change processes are modeled using a fixed-grid enthalpy-porosity technique, which is capable of predicting the continuously evolving solid- liquid interface. The three- dimensional model is able to predict the species concentration distribution inside the molten pool during alloying, as well as in the entire cross section of the solidified alloy. The model is simulated for different values of various significant processing parameters such as laser power, scanning speed, and powder feedrate in order to assess their influences on geometry and dynamics of the pool, cooling rates, as well as species concentration distribution inside the substrate. Effects of incorporating property variations in the numerical model are also discussed.

Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations have been carried out to explore the effects of the orientational motion of the donor-acceptor (D-A) chromophore pair on the Forster energy transfer between the D-A pair embedded in a polymer chain in solution. It is found that the usually employed orientational averaging (that is, replacing the orientational factor, kappa, by kappa (2) = 2/3) may lead to an error in the estimation of the rate of the reaction by about 20%. In the limit of slow orientational relaxation, the preaveraging of the orientational factor leads to an overestimation of the rate, while in the opposite limit of very fast orientational relaxation, the usual scheme underestimates the rate. The latter results from an interesting interplay between reaction and diffusion. On the other hand, when one of the chromophores is fixed, the preaveraged rate is found to be fairly reliable if the rotational relaxation of the chromophore is sufficiently fast. The present study also reveals a power law dependence of the FRET rate on the chain length (rate proportional to N- alpha, with alpha approximate to 2.6).

An unsteady flow and heat transfer of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid over a rotating infinite disk in an otherwise ambient fluid are studied. The unsteadiness in the flow field is caused by the angular velocity of the disk which varies with time. The magnetic field is applied normal to the disk surface. The new self-similar solution of the Navier-Stokes and energy equations is obtained numerically. The solution obtained here is not only the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, but also of the boundary layer equations. Also, for a simple scaling factor, it represents the solution of the flow and heat transfer in the forward stagnation-point region of a rotating sphere or over a rotating cone. The asymptotic behaviour of the solution for a large magnetic field or for a large independent variable is also examined. The surface shear stresses in the radial and tangential directions and the surface heat transfer increase as the acceleration parameter increases. Also the surface shear stress in the radial direction and the surface heat transfer decrease with increasing magnetic field, but the surface shear stress in the tangential direction increases. A fundamental task in bioinformatics involves a transfer of knowledge from one protein molecule onto another by way of recognizing similarities. Such similarities are obtained at different levels, that of sequence, whole fold, or important substructures. Comparison of binding sites is important to understand functional similarities among the proteins and also to understand drug cross-reactivities. Current methods in literature have their own merits and demerits, warranting exploration of newer concepts and algorithms, especially for large-scale comparisons and for obtaining accurate residue-wise mappings. Here, we report the development of a new algorithm, PocketAlign, for obtaining structural superpositions of binding sites. The software is available as a web-service at http://proline.physicslisc.emetin/pocketalign/. The algorithm encodes shape descriptors in the form of geometric perspectives, supplemented by chemical group classification. The shape descriptor considers several perspectives with each residue as the focus and captures relative distribution of residues around it in a given site. Residue-wise pairings are computed by comparing the set of perspectives of the first site with that of the second, followed by a greedy approach that incrementally combines residue pairings into a mapping. The mappings in different frames are then evaluated by different metrics encoding the extent of alignment of individual geometric perspectives. Different initial seed alignments are computed, each subsequently extended by detecting consequential atomic alignments in a three-dimensional grid, and the best 500 stored in a database. Alignments are then ranked, and the top scoring alignments reported, which are then streamed into Pymol for visualization and analyses. The method is validated for accuracy and sensitivity and benchmarked against existing methods. An advantage of PocketAlign, as compared to some of the existing tools available for binding site comparison in literature, is that it explores different schemes for identifying an alignment thus has a better potential to capture similarities in ligand recognition abilities. PocketAlign, by finding a detailed alignment of a pair of sites, provides insights as to why two sites are similar and which set of residues and atoms contribute to the similarity.

Two backward-facing models with step heights of 2 and 3 mm are used to measure the convective surface heat transfer rates by using platinum thin-film gauges, deposited on Macor inserts. Heat transfer rates have been theoretically calculated along the flat plate portion of a model using the Eckert reference temperature method. The experimentally determined surface heat transfer rate distributions are compared with theoretical and numerical estimations. Experimental heat flux distribution over a flat plate model showed good agreement with the reference temperature method at stagnation enthalpy range of 0.8-2 MJ/kg. Theoretical analysis has been used for downstream of a backward-facing step using Gai's nondimensional analysis. It has been found from the present study that approximately 10 and 8 step heights are required for the flow to reattach for 2 and 3 mm step height backward-facing step models, respectively, at a nominal Mach number of 7.6.

We report on the synthesis of CdSe magic-sized clusters (MSCs) and their evolution into 1D rod and wires retaining the diameter of the order of MSCs. At the beginning of the reaction, different classes of stable MSCs with band gaps of 3.02 eV and 2.57 eV are formed, which exhibit sharp band edge photoluminescence features with FWHM in the order of similar to 13 nm. Reaction annealing time was carried out in order to monitor the shape evolution of the MSCs. We find that magic sized CdSe evolve into 1D rod and wires retaining the same diameter upon increasing annealing time. We observed the gradual emergence of new red shifted emission peaks during this shape evolution process, which emerge as a result of one dimensional energy transfer within the magic sized clusters during their subsequent transformation into rods and wires. The smallest, the second smallest sized MSC and the wires sequentially act as donors and acceptors during the size evolution from small MSCs to larger ones, and then eventually to wires. Steady-state and time-resolved luminescent spectroscopy revealed Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the MSCs to the rods and wires.
