Pervasive use of pointers in large-scale real-world applications continues to make points-to analysis an important optimization-enabler. Rapid growth of software systems demands a scalable pointer analysis algorithm. A typical inclusion-based points-to analysis iteratively evaluates constraints and computes a points-to solution until a fixpoint. In each iteration, (i) points-to information is propagated across directed edges in a constraint graph G and (ii) more edges are added by processing the points-to constraints. We observe that prioritizing the order in which the information is processed within each of the above two steps can lead to efficient execution of the points-to analysis. While earlier work in the literature focuses only on the propagation order, we argue that the other dimension, that is, prioritizing the constraint processing, can lead to even higher improvements on how fast the fixpoint of the points-to algorithm is reached. This becomes especially important as we prove that finding an optimal sequence for processing the points-to constraints is NP-Complete. The prioritization scheme proposed in this paper is general enough to be applied to any of the existing points-to analyses. Using the prioritization framework developed in this paper, we implement prioritized versions of Andersen's analysis, Deep Propagation, Hardekopf and Lin's Lazy Cycle Detection and Bloom Filter based points-to analysis. In each case, we report significant improvements in the analysis times (33%, 47%, 44%, 20% respectively) as well as the memory requirements for a large suite of programs, including SPEC 2000 benchmarks and five large open source programs.

The Radio Interference (RI) from electric power transmission line hardware, if not controlled, poses serious electromagnetic interference to system in the vicinity. The present work mainly concerns with the RI from the insulator string along with the associated line hardware. The laboratory testing for the RI levels are carried out through the measurement of the conducted radio interference levels. However such measurements do not really locate the coronating point, as well as, the mode of corona. At the same time experience shows that it is rather difficult to locate the coronating points by mere inspection. After a thorough look into the intricacies of the problem, it is ascertained that the measurement of associated ground end currents could give a better picture of the prevailing corona modes and their intensities. A study on the same is attempted in the present work. Various intricacies of the problem, features of ground end current pulses and its correlation with RI are dealt with. Owing to the complexity of such experimental investigations, the study made is not fully complete nevertheless it seems to be first of its kind.
A nine-level inverter topology for medium-voltage induction motor drive with open-end stator winding
Resumo:
A new scheme for nine-level voltage space-vector generation for medium-voltage induction motor (IM) drives with open-end stator winding is presented in this paper. The proposed nine-level power converter topology consists of two conventional three-phase two-level voltage source inverters powered by isolated dc sources and six floating-capacitor-connected H-bridges. The H-bridge capacitor voltages are effectively maintained at the required asymmetrical levels by employing a space vector modulation (SVPWM) based control strategy. An interesting feature of this topology is its ability to function in five-or three-level mode, in the entire modulation range, at full-power rating, in the event of any failure in the H-bridges. This feature significantly improves the reliability of the proposed drive system. Each leg of the three-phase two-level inverters used in this topology switches only for a half cycle of the reference voltage waveform. Hence, the effective switching frequency is reduced by half, resulting in switching loss reduction in high-voltage devices. The transient as well as the steady-state performance of the proposed nine-level inverter-fed IM drive system is experimentally verified in the entire modulation range including the overmodulation region.

Glaciers have a direct relation with climate change. The equilibrium line altitude (ELA) is the most useful parameter to study the effect of climate change on glaciers. The ELA is a theoretical snowline at which the glacier mass balance is zero. Snowline altitude (SLA) at the end of melting season is generally regarded as the ELA. Glaciers of Chandra-Bhaga basin in Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh were chosen to study the ELA, using satellite images from 1980 to 2007. A total of 19 glaciers from the Chandra-Bhaga basin were identified and selected to carry out the study of ELA variation over 27 years. This study reveals that the mean SLA of the sub-basin has increased from 5009 +/- 61m to 5401 +/- 21m from 1980 to 2007. The study is in agreement with the reported increase in the temperature and decrease in winter snowfall of North-West Himalaya in the last century.

In order to reduce the motion artifacts in DSA, non-rigid image registration is commonly used before subtracting the mask from the contrast image. Since DSA registration requires a set of spatially non-uniform control points, a conventional MRF model is not very efficient. In this paper, we introduce the concept of pivotal and non-pivotal control points to address this, and propose a non-uniform MRF for DSA registration. We use quad-trees in a novel way to generate the non-uniform grid of control points. Our MRF formulation produces a smooth displacement field and therefore results in better artifact reduction than that of registering the control points independently. We achieve improved computational performance using pivotal control points without compromising on the artifact reduction. We have tested our approach using several clinical data sets, and have presented the results of quantitative analysis, clinical assessment and performance improvement on a GPU. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. We show how Majorana end modes can be generated in a one-dimensional system by varying some of the parameters in the Hamiltonian periodically in time. The specific model we consider is a chain containing spinless electrons with a nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude, a p-wave superconducting term, and a chemical potential; this is equivalent to a spin-1/2 chain with anisotropic XY couplings between nearest neighbors and a magnetic field applied in the (z) over cap direction. We show that varying the chemical potential (or magnetic field) periodically in time can produce Majorana modes at the ends of a long chain. We discuss two kinds of periodic driving, periodic delta-function kicks, and a simple harmonic variation with time. We discuss some distinctive features of the end modes such as the inverse participation ratio of their wave functions and their Floquet eigenvalues which are always equal to +/- 1 for time-reversal-symmetric systems. For the case of periodic delta-function kicks, we use the effective Hamiltonian of a system with periodic boundary conditions to define two topological invariants. The first invariant is a well-known winding number, while the second invariant has not appeared in the literature before. The second invariant is more powerful in that it always correctly predicts the numbers of end modes with Floquet eigenvalues equal to + 1 and -1, while the first invariant does not. We find that the number of end modes can become very large as the driving frequency decreases. We show that periodic delta-function kicks in the hopping and superconducting terms can also produce end modes. Finally, we study the effect of electron-phonon interactions (which are relevant at finite temperatures) and a random noise in the chemical potential on the Majorana modes.

Space shift keying (SSK) is a special case of spatial modulation (SM), which is a relatively new modulation technique that is getting recognized to be attractive in multi-antenna communications. Our new contribution in this paper is an analytical derivation of exact closed-form expression for the end-to-end bit error rate (BER) performance of SSK in decode-and-forward (1)1,) cooperative relaying. An incremental relaying (IR) scheme with selection combining (SC) at the destination is considered. In SSK, since the information is carried by the transmit antenna index, traditional selection combining methods based on instantaneous SNRs can not be directly used. To overcome this problem, we propose to do selection between direct and relayed paths based on the Euclidean distance between columns of the channel matrix. With this selection metric, an exact analytical expression for the end-to-end BER is derived in closed-form. Analytical results are shown to match with simulation results.

N-Decanoyl-L-alanine (DA) was mixed with either colorless 4,4-bipyridine (BP) or various derivatives such as chromogenic oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) (OPV) functionalized with isomeric pyridine termini in specific molar ratios. This mixtures form salt-type gels in a water/ethanol (2:1, v/v) mixture. The gelation properties of these two-component mixtures could be modulated by variation of the position of the N atom of the end pyridyl groups in OPVs. The presence of acid-base interactions in the self-assembly of these two-component systems leading to gelation was probed in detail by using stoichiometry-dependent UV/Vis and FTIR spectroscopy. Furthermore, temperature-dependent UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy clearly demonstrated a J-type aggregation mode of these gelator molecules during the sol-to-gel transition process. Morphological features and the arrangement of the molecules in the gels were examined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Calculation of the length of each molecular system by energy minimization in its extended conformation and comparison with the XRD patterns revealed that this class of gelator molecules adopts lamellar organizations. Rheological properties of these two-component systems provided clear evidence that the flow behavior could be modulated by varying the acid/amine ratio. Polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and XRD results revealed that the solid-phase behavior of such two-component mixtures (acid/base=2:1) varied significantly upon changing the proton-acceptor part from BP to OPV. Interestingly, the XRD pattern of these acid/base mixtures after annealing at their associated isotropic temperature was significantly different from that of their xerogels.

Voltage source inverter (VSI) fed six-phase induction motor drives have high 6n +/- 1; n = odd order harmonic currents, due to absence of back emf for these currents. To suppress these harmonic currents, either bulky inductive harmonic filters or complex pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques have to be used. This paper proposes a simple harmonic elimination scheme using capacitor fed inverters, for an asymmetrical six-phase induction motor VSI fed drive. Two three phase inverters fed from a single capacitor is used on the open-end side of the motor, to suppress 6n +/- 1; n = odd order harmonics. A PWM scheme that can suppress the harmonics, as well as balance the capacitor voltage is also proposed. The capacitor fed inverters are switched so that the fundamental voltage is not affected. The proposed scheme is verified using MATLAB Simulink simulation at different speeds. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated by comparing the results with those obtained by disabling the capacitor fed inverters. Experimental results are also provided to validate the functionality of the proposed controller.

Voltage source inverter (VSI)-fed six-phase induction motor (IM) drives have high 6n +/- 1, n = odd-order harmonic currents. This is because these currents, driven by the corresponding harmonic voltages in the inverter output, are limited only by the stator leakage impedance, as these harmonics are absent in the back electromotive force of the motor. To suppress the harmonic currents, either bulky inductive harmonic filters or complex pulsewidth modulation (PWM) techniques have to be used. This paper proposes a harmonic elimination scheme using switched capacitor filters for a VSI-fed split-phase IM drive. Two 3-phase inverters fed from capacitors are used on the open-end side of the motor to suppress 6n +/- 1, n = odd-order harmonics. A PWM scheme that can suppress the harmonics as well as balance the capacitor voltage is also proposed. The capacitor fed inverters are switched so that the fundamental voltage is not affected, and the fundamental power is always drawn from the main inverters. The proposed scheme is verified with a detailed experimental study. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated by comparing the results with those obtained by disabling the capacitor fed inverters.

The average time tau(r) for one end of a long, self-avoiding polymer to interact for the first time with a flat penetrable surface to which it is attached at the other end is shown here to scale essentially as the square of the chain's contour length N. This result is obtained within the framework of the Wilemski-Fixman approximation to diffusion-limited reactions, in which the reaction time is expressed as a time correlation function of a ``sink'' term. In the present work, this sink-sink correlation function is calculated using perturbation expansions in the excluded volume and the polymer-surface interactions, with renormalization group methods being used to resum the expansion into a power law form. The quadratic dependence of tau(r) on N mirrors the behavior of the average time tau(c) of a free random walk to cyclize, but contrasts with the cyclization time of a free self-avoiding walk (SAW), for which tau(r) similar to N-2.2. A simulation study by Cheng and Makarov J. Phys. Chem. B 114, 3321 (2010)] of the chain-end reaction time of an SAW on a flat impenetrable surface leads to the same N-2.2 behavior, which is surprising given the reduced conformational space a tethered polymer has to explore in order to react. Dialkyl succinates show a pattern of alternating behavior in their melting points, as the number of C atoms in the alkane side chain increases, unlike in the dialkyl oxalates Joseph et al. (2011). Acta Cryst. B67, 525-534]. Dialkyl succinates with odd numbers of C atoms in the alkyl side chain show higher melting points than the immediately adjacent analogues with even numbers. The crystal structures and their molecular packing have been analyzed for a series of dialkyl succinates with 1 - 4 C atoms in the alkyl side chain. The energy difference (Delta E) between the optimized and observed molecular conformations, density, Kitaigorodskii packing index (KPI) and C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions are considered to rationalize this behavior. In contrast to the dialkyl oxalates where a larger number of moderately strong C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions were characteristic of oxalates with elevated melting points, here the molecular packing and the density play a major role in raising the melting point. On moving from oxalate to succinate esters the introduction of the C2 spacer adds two activated H atoms to the asymmetric unit, resulting in the formation of stronger C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds in all succinates. As a result the crystallinity of long-chain alkyl substituted esters improves enormously in the presence of hydrogen bonds from activated donors.

The problem of bipartite ranking, where instances are labeled positive or negative and the goal is to learn a scoring function that minimizes the probability of mis-ranking a pair of positive and negative instances (or equivalently, that maximizes the area under the ROC curve), has been widely studied in recent years. A dominant theoretical and algorithmic framework for the problem has been to reduce bipartite ranking to pairwise classification; in particular, it is well known that the bipartite ranking regret can be formulated as a pairwise classification regret, which in turn can be upper bounded using usual regret bounds for classification problems. Recently, Kotlowski et al. (2011) showed regret bounds for bipartite ranking in terms of the regret associated with balanced versions of the standard (non-pairwise) logistic and exponential losses. In this paper, we show that such (non-pairwise) surrogate regret bounds for bipartite ranking can be obtained in terms of a broad class of proper (composite) losses that we term as strongly proper. Our proof technique is much simpler than that of Kotlowski et al. (2011), and relies on properties of proper (composite) losses as elucidated recently by Reid and Williamson (2010, 2011) and others. Our result yields explicit surrogate bounds (with no hidden balancing terms) in terms of a variety of strongly proper losses, including for example logistic, exponential, squared and squared hinge losses as special cases. An important consequence is that standard algorithms minimizing a (non-pairwise) strongly proper loss, such as logistic regression and boosting algorithms (assuming a universal function class and appropriate regularization), are in fact consistent for bipartite ranking; moreover, our results allow us to quantify the bipartite ranking regret in terms of the corresponding surrogate regret. We also obtain tighter surrogate bounds under certain low-noise conditions via a recent result of Clemencon and Robbiano (2011).

Two novel triads based on a diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) central core and two 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) units attached by thiophene rings have been synthesised having high molar extinction coefficients. These triads were characterised and used as donor materials in small molecule, solution processable organic solar cells. Both triads were blended with PC71BM as an acceptor in different ratios by wt% and their photovoltaic properties were studied. For both the triads a modest photovoltaic performance was observed, having an efficiency of 0.65%. Moreover, in order to understand the ground and excited state properties and vertical absorption profile of DPP and BODIPY units within the triads, theoretical DFT and TDDFT calculations were performed.
