A novel, pyrene-functionalised copolymer has been synthesised in a single step via imidisation of poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene) with 1-pyrenemethylamine, and its potential for the detection of volatile nitro aromatic compounds (NACs) evaluated. The new copolymer forms complexes in solution with NACs such as 2,5-dinitrobenzonitrile, as shown by H-1 NMR, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Moreover, thin films of this copolymer, cast from THF solution, undergo almost instantaneous fluorescence quenching when exposed to the vapour of 2,5-dinitrobenzonitrile (a model for TNT) at ambient temperatures and pressures.

The tetraprotonated form of the dioxatetraazamacrocycle, 6,19-dioxa-3,9,16,22-tetraaza[22.2.2.2(11,14)]-triaconta-1(26),11,13,24, 27,29-hexaene, (H4L1)(4+), was used as the receptor for binding studies with carboxylate anionic substrates of different shapes, sizes, and charges [succinate (suc(2-)), cyclo- hexanetricarboxylate (cta(3-)), phthalate (ph(2-)), isophthalate (iph(2-)), terephthalate (tph(2-)), and benezenetricarboxylate (btc(3-))]. Association constants were determined by potentiometry in aqueous solution at 298.2 K and 0.10 M KCl and by H-1 NMR titration in D2O. The strongest association was found for the btc3- anion at 5-7 pH region. From both techniques it was possible to establish the binding preference trend of the receptor for the different substrates, and the H-1 NMR spectroscopy gave important suggestions about the type of interactions between partners and the location of the substrates in the supramolecular entities formed. The effective binding constants at pH 6 follow the order: btc(3-)>iph(2-)>cta(3-) =ph(2-)>tph(2-)>suc(2-). All the studies suggest that the anionic substrates bind to the receptor via N-H center dot center dot center dot O = C hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions, and the aromatic substrates can also establish pi-pi stacking interactions. The crystal structures of (H4L1)(4+) and its supramolecular assemblies with ph(2-) and tph(2-) were determined by X-ray diffraction. The last two structures showed that the association process in solid state occurs via multiple N-H center dot center dot center dot O = C hydrogen bonds with the anionic substrate located outside the macrocyclic cavity of the receptor. Molecular dynamics simulations carried out for the association of (H4L1)(4+) with tph(2-) and btC(3-) in water solution established at atomic level the existence of all interactions suggested by the experimental studies, which act cooperatively in the binding process. Furthermore, the binding free energies were estimated and the values are in agreement with the experimental ones, indicating that the binding of these two anionic substrates occurs into the receptor cavity. However, the tph(2-) has also propensity to leave the macrocyclic cavity and its molecular recognition can also happen at the top of the receptor. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The dibenzodioxatetraazamacrocycle [26]pbz(2)N(4)O(2) was characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction and the protonation constants of this compound and the stability constants of its copper(II) and lead(II) complexes were determined by potentiometry in water at 298.2 K in 0.10 mol dm(-3) in KNO3. Mono- and dinuclear complexes were found for both metal ions, the dinuclear complexes being the main species in the 5-7.5 pH range for copper(II) and 7.5-8.5 for lead(II). As expected the values of the stability constants for the copper(II) complexes are lower than those for related macrocycles containing only nitrogen atoms. The presence of mono- and dinuclear copper complexes was also confirmed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. These results suggest that the symmetric macrocyclic cavity of [26]pbZ(2)N(4)O(2) has enough space for the coordination of two metal ions. Additionally, NMR spectroscopy showed that the dinuclear complex of lead(II) has high symmetry. The equilibrium constants of the dinuclear copper(II) complexes and dicarboxylate anions (oxalate, malonate and succinate) were also determined in 0.10 mol dm-3 aqueous KNO3 solution. Only species containing one anion, Cu(2)H(h)LA((2+h)), were found, strongly suggesting that the anion bridges the two copper(II) ions. The binding constants of the cascade species formed by [Cu-2[26]pbZ(2)N(4)O(2)(H2O)(4+) with dicarboxylate anions decrease with the increase in length of the alkyl chain of the anion, a fact which was attributed to a higher conformational energy necessary for the rearrangement of the macrocycle to accommodate the larger anions bridging the two copper(II) centres. The variation of the magnetic susceptibility with temperature Of [Cu-2(H-2[26]pbz(2)N(4)O(2))(oxa)(3)]-4H(2)O and [Cu-2([26]pbz(2)N(4)O(2))(suc)Cl-2] were measured and the two complexes showed different behaviour. There has been great interest recently in peptide amphiphiles and block copolymers containing biomimetic peptide sequences due to applications in bionanotechnology. We investigate the self-assembly of the peptide-PEG amphiphile FFFF-PEG5000 containing the hydrophobic sequence of four phenylalanine residues conjugated to PEG of molar mass 5000. This serves as a simple model peptide amphiphile. At very low concentration, association of hydrophobic aromatic phenylalanine residues occurs, as revealed by circular dichroism and UV/vis fluorescence experiments. A critical aggregation concentration associated with the formation of hydrophobic domains is determined through pyrene fluorescence assays. At higher concentration, defined beta-sheets develop as revealed by FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Transmission electron microscopy reveals self-assembled straight fibril structures. These are much shorter than those observed for amyloid peptides, the finite length may be set by the end cap energy due to the hydrophobicity of phenylalanine. The combination of these techniques points to different aggregation processes depending on concentration. Hydrophobic association into irregular aggregates occurs at low concentration, well-developed beta-sheets only developing at higher concentration. Drying of FFFF-PEG5000 solutions leads to crystallization of PEG, as confirmed by polarized optical microscopy (POM), FTIR and X-ray diffraction (XRD). PEG crystallization does not disrupt local beta-sheet structure (as indicated by FTIR and XRD). However on longer lengthscales the beta-sheet fibrillar structure is perturbed because spheruilites from PEG crystallization are observed by POM. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The self-assembly in films dried from aqueous solutions of a modified amyloid beta peptide fragment is studied. We focus on sequence A beta(16-20), KLVFF, extended by two alanines at the N-terminus to give AAKLVFF. Self-assembly into twisted ribbon fibrils is observed, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Dynamic light scattering reveals the semi-flexible nature of the AAKLVFF fibrils, while polarized optical microscopy shows that the peptide fibrils crystallize after an aqueous solution of AAKLVFF is matured over 5 days. The secondary structure of the fibrils is studied by FT-IR, circular dichroism and X-ray diffraction (XRD), which provide evidence for beta-sheet structure in the fibril. From high resolution TEM it is concluded that the average width of an AAKLVFF fibril is (63 +/- 18) nm, indicating that these fibrils comprise beta-sheets with multiple repeats of the unit cell, determined by XRD to have b and c dimensions 1.9 and 4.4 nm with an a axis 0.96 nm, corresponding to twice the peptide backbone spacing in the antiparallel beta-sheet. The self-assembly into wormlike micelles of a poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer Pluronic P84 in aqueous salt solution (2 M NaCl) has been studied by rheology, small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS), and light scattering. Measurements of the flow curves by controlled stress rheometry indicated phase separation under flow. SAXS on solutions subjected to capillary flow showed alignment of micelles at intermediate shear rates, although loss of alignment was observed for high shear rates. For dilute solutions, SAXS and static light scattering data on unaligned samples could be superposed over three decades in scattering vector, providing unique information on the wormlike micelle structure over several length scales. SANS data provided information on even shorter length scales, in particular, concerning "blob" scattering from the micelle corona. The data could be modeled based on a system of semiflexible self-avoiding cylinders with a circular cross-section, as described by the wormlike chain model with excluded volume interactions. The micelle structure was compared at two temperatures close to the cloud point (47 degrees C). The micellar radius was found not to vary with temperature in this region, although the contour length increased with increasing temperature, whereas the Kuhn length decreased. These variations result in an increase of the low-concentration radius of gyration with increasing temperature. This was consistent with dynamic light scattering results, and, applying theoretical results from the literature, this is in agreement with an increase in endcap energy due to changes in hydration of the poly(ethylene oxide) blocks as the temperature is increased.

Cyclocondensations of aromatic diamines with 1,1'-bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium salts afford doubly or quadruply charged, macrocyclic, N,N'-diarylbipyridinium cations. These are tolerant of a wide range of acids, bases, and nucleophiles, although they appear to undergo reversible, one-electron reduction by tertiary amines. Single-crystal X-ray analysis demonstrates the presence of a macrocycle conformation in which the 4,4'-bipyridinium and 4,4'-biphenylenedisulfonyl residues are suitably spaced and aligned for complexation with pi-donor arenes, and NMR studies in solution indeed confirm binding to 1,5-bis[hydroxy(ethoxy)ethoxy]naphthalene.

Highly strained macrocyclic ether-ketones obtained by nickel-catalyzed cyclization of linear precursor oligomers undergo ring-opening polyinerization via ether exchange in the presence of nucleophilic initiators such as fluoride or phenoxide anions. Strain enthapies of these macrocycles, from DSC analyses of their exothermic ring-opening polymerization are in the range 50-90 kJ mol(-1). Melt-phase polymerization generally affords slightly cross-linked materials, but solution-phase polymerization at high macrocycle concentrations gives fully soluble, high molar mass polymers with inherent viscosities of up to 1.78 dL g(-1). Sequence-analysis of the resulting polymers by C-13 NMR shows that alternating or random monomer sequences may be obtained, depending on whether one or both aromatic rings adjacent to the ether linkages are activated toward nucleophilic attack.

The novel dioxatetraaza macrocycle [26]phen(2)N(4)O(2), which incorporates two phenanthroline units, has been synthesized, and its acid-base behavior has been evaluated by potentiometric and H-1 NMR methods. Six protonation constants were determined, and the protonation sequence was established by NMR. The location of the fifth proton on the phen nitrogen was confirmed by X-ray determinations of the crystal structures of the receptor as bromide and chloride salts. The two compounds have the general molecular formula {(H-5[26]phen(2)N(4)O(2))X-n(H2O)(5-n)}X(n-1)(.)mH(2)O, where X = Cl, n = 3, and m = 6 or X = Br, n = 4, and m = 5.5. In the solid state, the (H-5[26]phen(2)N(4)O(2))(5+) cation adopts a "horseshoe" topology with sufficient room to encapsulate three or four halogen anions through the several N-(HX)-X-... hydrogen-bonding interactions. Two supermolecules {(H-5[26]phen(2)N(4)O(2))X-n(H2O)(5-n)}((5-n)+) form an interpenetrating dimeric species, which was also found by ESI mass spectrum. Binding studies of the protonated macrocycle with aliphatic (ox(2-), mal(2-), suc(2-), cit(3-), cta(3-)) and aromatic (bzc(-), naphc(-), anthc(-), pyrc(-), ph(2-), iph(2-), tph(2-), btc(3-)) anions were determined in water by potentiometric methods. These studies were complemented by H-1 NMR titrations in D2O of the receptor with selected anions. The H-i[26]phen(2)N(4)O(2)(i+) receptor can selectively uptake highly charged or extended aromatic carboxylate anions, such as btc(3-) and pyrc(-), in the pH ranges of 4.0-8.5 and < 4.0, respectively, from aqueous solution that contain the remaining anions as pollutants or contaminants. To obtain further insight into these structural and experimental findings, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out in water solution.

A tetraazamacrocycle containing ferrocene moieties has been synthesized and characterized. The tetraprotonated form of this compound was evaluated as a receptor (R) for anion recognition of several substrates (S), Cl-, PF6-, HSO4-, H2PO4- and carboxylates, such as p-nitrobenzoate (p-nbz(-)), phthalate (ph(2-)), isophthalate (iph(2-)) and dipicolinate (dipic(2-)). H-1 NMR titrations in CD3OD indicated that this receptor is not suitable for recognizing HSO4- and H2PO4-, but weakly binds p-nbz(-), and strongly interacts with ph(2-), dipic(2-), and iph(2-) anions forming 1 : 2 assembled species. The largest beta(2) binding constant was determined for ph(2-), followed by dipic(2-) and finally iph(2-). The effect of the anionic substrates on the electron-transfer process of the ferrocene units of R was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) in methanol solution and 0.1 mol dm(-3) (CH3)(4)NCl as the supporting electrolyte. Titrations of the receptor were undertaken by addition of anion solutions in their tetrabutylammonium or tetramethylammonium forms. The protonated ligand exhibits a reversible voltammogram, which shifts cathodically in the presence of the substrates. The data revealed kinetic constraints in the formation of the receptor/substrate entity for dipic(2-), ph(2-) and iph(2-) anions, but not for p-nbz(-). In spite of the slow kinetics of assembled species formation with the ph(2-) substrate, this anion provides the largest redox-response when the supramolecular entity is formed, followed by dipic(2-), iph(2-) and finally p-nbz(-) anions. This trend is in agreement with the H-1 NMR results and the values of the binding constants. Single crystal X-ray structures of the receptor with PF6-, ph(2-), iph(2-) and p-nbz(-) were carried out and showed that supermolecules with a RS2 stoichiometry are formed with the first three anions, but RS4 with p-nbz(-). In all cases the binding occurs outside the macrocyclic cavity via N-H center dot center dot center dot O=C hydrogen bonds for carboxylate anions and N - H center dot center dot center dot F hydrogen bonds for the PF6- anion, which is in agreement with the solution results. The macrocyclic framework adopts different conformations in order to interact with each substrate having Fe center dot center dot center dot Fe intramolecular distances ranging from 10.125(14) to 12.783(15) angstrom.

A family of oxorhenium (V) complexes of newly designed pyridylthioazophenolate ligands has been synthesized and isolated in pure form. The solid state structure of an organic compound (HL1) has been established by X-ray crystallography. The molecular structure observed in the solid state is that the two molecules of the ligand (HL1) in the asymmetric unit have similar geometries, except for the orientation of the pyridine ring. This series of organic moieties acts as tetradentate monobasic NSNO donor chelators in oxorhenium(V) complexes which has been characterized by elemental analyses, IR, H-1-NMR, UV-Vis. The complexes are 1: 1 electrolytes in nature in MeOH solution, the counter anion being ClO4). The electrochemical studies of the [(ReO)-O-V(L)Cl]ClO4 complexes in MeCN using TBAP as supporting electrolyte exhibit quasi-reversible voltammogram showing one-electron couple for [(ReO)-O-VI(L)Cl](2+)-[(ReO)-O-V(L)Cl](+) in the 1.11-1.29 V vs SCE range.

Reactions of the 1: 2 condensate (L) of benzil dihydrazone and 2-acetylpyridine with Hg(ClO4)(2) center dot xH(2)O and HgI2 yield yellow [HgL2](ClO4)(2) (1) and HgLI2 (2), respectively. Homoleptic 1 is a 8-coordinate double helical complex with a Hg(II)N-8 core crystallising in the space group Pbca with cell dimensions: a = 16.2250(3), b = 20.9563(7), c = 31.9886(11) angstrom. Complex 2 is a 4-coordinate single helical complex having a Hg(II)N2I2 core crystallising in the space group P2(1)/n with cell dimensions a = 9.8011(3), b = 17.6736(6), c = 16.7123(6) angstrom and b = 95.760(3). In complex 1, the N-donor ligand L uses all of its binding sites to act as tetradentate. On the other hand, it acts as a bidentate N-donor ligand in 2 giving rise to a dangling part. From variable temperature H-1 NMR studies both the complexes are found to be stereochemically non-rigid in solution. [Cu(2-acetylpyridine)(2)]ClO4 (1), characterised here, has a novel Cu'N202 core in the solid state. Variable-temperature H-1 NMR studies show that the two chelate rings open up in solution at room temperature and the keto oxygen atoms dangle freely. As the temperature is lowered, the 0 atoms tend to bind to the metal atom. The corresponding silver(I) complex, [Ag(2-acetylpyridine)2]ClO4 (4), characterised by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, has an (AgN2)-N-I core in the solid state as well as in solution. Thus, while 1 is fluxional, 4 is not. In cyclic voltammetry, complex 1 displays a quasireversible Cu-II/I couple with a half-wave potential of 0.40 V vs. SCE. Complex I is easily oxidised by air and H2O2 in methanol to give rise to a dinuclear copper(II) complex where the ligand framework is not simple acetylpyridine. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and solvent dependent NMR titration reveal that the designed pepticles I and 11, Boc-Xx(1)-Aib(2)-Yy(3)-NH(CH2)(2)NH-Yy(3)-Aib(2)-Xx(1)-Boc, where Xx and Yy are lie and Leu in peptide I and Leu and Val in peptide 11, respectively, fold into a turn-linker-turn (T-L-T) conformation both in the solid state and in solution. In the crystalline state the T-L-T foldamers; of peptide I and II self-assemble to form a three-dimensional framework of channels. The insides of the channels are hydrophilic and found to contain solvent CHCl3 hydrogen bonded to exposed C=O of Aib located at the turn regions. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
