The thermal stability, crystallization behavior and biodegradability of poly(beta -hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) grafted with maleic anhydride (MA) were studied by DSC,TGA, optical microscopy and WAXD. The results showed that thermal stability of maleated PHB was obviously improved, comparing with that of pure PHB. The temperature of decomposition was enhanced about 20 degreesC After grafting MA, the crystallization behavior of PHB changed evidently. The rate of spherulite growth decreased, the crystallization temperature from the melt state reduced, and the cold crystallization temperature from the glass state increased. With the increase in graft degree, the banding texture of spherulite became more distinct and orderly. Moreover, the introduction of MA groups promoted the biodegradation of PHB.

Two series of thermotropic copolyesters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) were synthesized by direct thermal polycondensation. One comprised aromatic copolyesters from HBA, terephthalic acid, bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) ketone (BHP) and resorcinol. The other comprised semi-aromatic copolyesters from HBA, terephthalic acid, BHP and alpha,-diols with carbon atom number of 4, 6, 8, 10. The properties of the two series were characterized by polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and wide angle X-ray diffraction. Most of the resulting copolyesters could form a nematic phase over a wide temperature range above their melting points. The effects of Variation in composition and monomer structure on the properties of copolyesters were discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Using a graft modification method, a comblike polymer host (CBPE550) was synthesized by reacting monomethyl ether of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEGMA) with ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer (EMAC) and endcapping the residual carboxylic acid with methanol. The product was characterized by IR and elementary analysis. Result showed that the product was amorphous and semi-ester product is accord with reaction equation. There were two peaks in the plot of the ionic conductivity against Li salt concentration. The plot of log a against 1/(T - T-0) shows a dual VTF behavior when using the glass transition temperature of PEO of side chain as T beta. The comblike polymer is a white rubbery solid. It can be well-dissolved in acetone. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two closely series of poly(ester imide)s had been synthesized by solution polycondensation of p-phenylenebis(trimellitate) dianhydride with aliphatic diamines. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) traces of the most poly(ester imide)s exhibited two endotherms representing the solid state to anisotropic phase transition (T-m1) and the anisotropic to isotropic melt transition (T-m2), respectively. Observation under polarizing microscope and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements suggested that the anisotropic phase formed above the melting paints (T-m1) had a smectic character. The thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) revealed that the thermal stabilities of the poly(ester imide)s were up to 350 degrees C. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Blends of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) (EMA) random copolymer were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and excimer fluorescence. In binary blends, crystallization of EMA was studied, and no modification of crystal structure was detected. In excimer fluorescence measurements, emission intensities of blends of EMA and naphthalene-labeled LLDPE were measured. The ratio of the excimer emission intensity (I-D) to the emission intensity of the isolated "monomer" (I-M) decreases upon addition of EMA, indicating that PE segments of EMA interpenetrate into the amorphous phase of LLDPE. Binary blends of polyamide 1010/poly(propylene) and polyamide 1010 (PA1010)/poly(propylene)-graft-(glycidyl methacrylate) (PP-g-GMA) were prepared. The epoxy groups in PP-g-GMA react with the amino end-groups in PA1010, thus a PA1010-graft-PP copolymer is formed and acts as a compatibilizer between PA1010 and PP-g-GMA. The reaction was confirmed by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) and attenuated total reflection (ATR)-FTIR spectroscopic analysis, and also evaluated by the stability of the suspension obtained by dissolving the blends in formic acid and by the morphologies of the blends.

A new monomer, sodium 5,5'-carbonylbis(2-fluorobenzenesulfonate) (1), was synthesized by sulfonation of 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone (2) with fuming sulfuric acid. Poly(ether ether ketone)s containing sodium sulfonate groups were synthesized directly via aromatic nucleophilic substitution from the sodium sulfonate-functionalized monomer 1 and Bisphenol A (3) in the presence of potassium carbonate in dimethyl sulfoxide. The polycondensation proceeds without any side reactions. The differential scanning calorimetry measurement indicated that the polymers are amorphous and the glass transition temperatures increase with the content of sodium sulfonate groups in the polymer chain. The degree of substitution with sodium sulfonate groups has strong influence on their thermal stability and solubility.

The compositions and structures of interpolymer complexes formed by mixing phenoxy resin (PHEB) and poly (4-vinylpyridine) (P4VPy) in chloroform have been studied by means of elemental analysis, DSC, FTIR, UV and XPS, In the meantime, the corresponding blends prepared have been characterized and compared. The results show that compositions of the complexes were identical with the ratio of equimolar interactive units. All blends were miscible and their compositions were related to the feed ratios. Based on the experimental results, process of formation of the complex is depicted.

The poly(monoester (6-[4-(p-nitrophenyl) azo]phenoxy-1-hexyloxy) of maleic anhydride) shows a smectic phase with a focal conic fan texture. With the decrease of the monoestering degree the phase transition temperature decreases and the mesomorphic temperature range becomes narrow. The hydrogen bonding between two carboxylic acid groups was found to play a very important role in forming the smectic phase structure. The smectic bilayer structure has been built through self-assembly via. intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

The multilayer Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of pr,ly 3-(2-(5-chlorobenzotriazole)ethyl) thiophene (PCBET) blended with amphibious arachidic acid (AA) were prepared and characterized. The photoluminescence intensity of the blend film was enhanced as the AA increased by a certain amount. The PCBET excimers were not formed in the blend LB films.

The curing reaction process of epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK) with 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) and hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride (Nadic) as curing agents was investigated using isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (IDSC) and nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DDSC) techniques. It was found that the curing reactions of E-PEK/DDS and E-PEK/Nadic are nth-order reactions but not autoaccelerating. The experimental results revealed that the curing reaction kinetics parameters measured from IDSC and DDSC are not equivalent. This means that, in the curing reaction kinetics model for our E-PEK system, both isothermal and nonisothermal reaction kinetics parameters are needed to describe isothermal and nonisothermal curing processes, The isothermal and nonisothermal curing processes were successfully simulated using this model. A new extrapolation method was suggested. On the basis of this method the maximum extent of the curing reaction (A(ult)) that is able to reach a certain temperature can be predicted. The A(ult) for the E-PEK system estimated by the new method agrees well with the results obtained from another procedure reported in the literature. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Chemorheology and corresponding models for an epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK) and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) system were investigated using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a cone-and-plate rheometer. For this system, the reported four-parameter chemorheological model and modified WLF chemorheological model can only be used in an isothermal or nonisothermal process, respectively. In order to predict the resin viscosity variation during a stepwise temperature cure cycle actually used, a new model based on the combination of the four-parameter model and the modified WLF model was developed. The combined model can predict the resin viscosity variation during a stepwise temperature cure cycle more accurately than the above two models. In order to simplify the establishment of this model, a new five-parameter chemorheological model was then developed. The parameters in this five-parameter model can be determined through very few rheology and DSC experiments. This model is practicable to describe the resin viscosity variation for isothermal, nonisothermal, or stepwise temperature cure cycles accurately. The five-parameter chemorheological model has also successfully been used in the E-PEK systems with two other curing agents, i.e., the diamine curing agent with the addition of a boron trifluride monoethylamine (BF3-MEA) accelerator and an anhydride curing agent (hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride). Two etching techniques are used to reveal the morphology of PC/PBA-cs-PMMA blend. One is based on acetic acid (CH3COOH) solutions, whereas the other uses CCl4/ C2H5OH (3/1 v/v). The latter approach shows to be more appropriate and successful for revealing the morphology of PC/PBA-cs-PMMA blend.

Soluble poly (o-toluidine) (POT), poly(o-anisidine) (PAs) and poly (o-chloroaniline) (PCAn) were doped with camphorsulfonic acid (CSA). The conductivity and UV-Vis spectra of the CSA-doped POT, PAs and PCAn were studied. These properties were found to be dependent on the solvent used. The cast films from m-cresol solution exhibit more effective doping and higher conductivity.
