The corner stone of the interoperability of eLearning systems is the standard definition of learning objects. Nevertheless, for some domains this standard is insufficient to fully describe all the assets, especially when they are used as input for other eLearning services. On the other hand, a standard definition of learning objects in not enough to ensure interoperability among eLearning systems; they must also use a standard API to exchange learning objects. This paper presents the design and implementation of a service oriented repository of learning objects called crimsonHex. This repository is fully compliant with the existing interoperability standards and supports new definitions of learning objects for specialized domains. We illustrate this feature with the definition of programming problems as learning objects and its validation by the repository. This repository is also prepared to store usage data on learning objects to tailor the presentation order and adapt it to learner profiles.

The ultimate goal of this research plan is to improve the learning experience of students through the combination of pedagogical eLearning services. Service oriented architectures are already being used in eLearning but in this work the focus is on services of pedagogical value, rather then on generic services adapted from other business systems. This approach to the architecture of eLearning platforms raises challenges addressed by this work, namely: conceptual modeling of the pedagogical eLearning services domain; interoperability and coordination of pedagogical eLearning service; conversion of existing eLearning systems to pedagogical services; adaptation of eLearning services to individual learners. An improved eLearning platform will incorporate learning tools adequate to the domains it covers and will focus on the individual learner that uses it. With this approach we expect to raise the pedagogical value of eLearning platforms.

Porquê este projeto? Conhecimentos, aptidões, competências; desenvolvimento de competências (instrumentais, interpessoais, sistémicas); contributo para uma concepção de carácter multidimensional do estudante, preparando-o para apreender a importância da investigação, preparando-o para uma profissão de saúde; as novas soluções tecnológicas, a par da inovação e a mudança nos cuidados de saúde e dos processos de trabalho, constituem hoje os desafios do presente e do futuro para os profissionais de saúde [o desenvolvimento da tecnologia e da informática, a educação e a prática baseada na evidência (investigação), as mudanças nos processos de trabalho, o trabalho em equipa, a dimensão internacional]; a investigação e o seu impacto na profissão (desenvolvimento de conhecimentos próprios das profissões, autonomia, impacto positivo nas práticas profissionais, benefício do doente); a investigação auxilia no processo de definição dos parâmetros de uma profissão (nenhuma profissão terá um desenvolvimento sustentado sem o contributo da investigação; é através da investigação que se constitui um domínio de conhecimentos baseados na evidência que permitam as boas práticas); apostar num projeto associado à investigação, com uma base científica que contribua para uma melhor educação e prática profissional visando assegurar a credibilidade da profissão; aprendizagem centrada no estudante; adopção de metodologias de ensino que promovam a autonomia, o raciocínio, a capacidade crítica e a resolução de problemas.

Background - Medical image perception research relies on visual data to study the diagnostic relationship between observers and medical images. A consistent method to assess visual function for participants in medical imaging research has not been developed and represents a significant gap in existing research. Methods - Three visual assessment factors appropriate to observer studies were identified: visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and stereopsis. A test was designed for each, and 30 radiography observers (mean age 31.6 years) participated in each test. Results - Mean binocular visual acuity for distance was 20/14 for all observers. The difference between observers who did and did not use corrective lenses was not statistically significant (P = .12). All subjects had a normal value for near visual acuity and stereoacuity. Contrast sensitivity was better than population norms. Conclusion - All observers had normal visual function and could participate in medical imaging visual analysis studies. Protocols of evaluation and populations norms are provided. Further studies are necessary to understand fully the relationship between visual performance on tests and diagnostic accuracy in practice.

The LMS plays an indisputable role in the majority of the eLearning environments. This eLearning system type is often used for presenting, solving and grading simple exercises. However, exercises from complex domains, such as computer programming, require heterogeneous systems such as evaluation engines, learning objects repositories and exercise resolution environments. The coordination of networks of such disparate systems is rather complex. This work presents a standard approach for the coordination of a network of eLearning systems supporting the resolution of exercises. The proposed approach use a pivot component embedded in the LMS with two roles: provide an exercise resolution environment and coordinate the communication between the LMS and other systems exposing their functions as web services. The integration of the pivot component with the LMS relies on the Learning Tools Interoperability. The validation of this approach is made through the integration of the component with LMSs from two vendors.

In recent years emerged several initiatives promoted by educational organizations to adapt Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) to e-learning. These initiatives commonly named eLearning Frameworks share a common goal: to create flexible learning environments by integrating heterogeneous systems already available in many educational institutions. However, these frameworks were designed for integration of systems participating in business like processes rather than on complex pedagogical processes as those related to automatic evaluation. Consequently, their knowledge bases lack some fundamental components that are needed to model pedagogical processes. The objective of the research described in this paper is to study the applicability of eLearning frameworks for modelling a network of heterogeneous eLearning systems, using the automatic evaluation of programming exercises as a case study. The paper surveys the existing eLearning frameworks to justify the selection of the e-Framework. This framework is described in detail and identified the necessary components missing from its knowledge base, more precisely, a service genre, expression and usage model for an evaluation service. The extensibility of the framework is tested with the definition of this service. A concrete model for evaluation of programming exercises is presented as a validation of the proposed approach.

Objetivos: O objetivo deste estudo é descrever o quadro de inovação no setor da saúde em Portugal, identificar os fatores críticos de sucesso da inovação, investigando os impactos da inovação nas organizações do setor da saúde. Metodologia: Na concretização da presente dissertação, recorremos a uma abordagem quantitativa, combinando a análise documental com a estatística, ao nível da análise do tratamento dos dados recolhidos através do Inquérito Comunitário à Inovação, efetuando assim um estudo de caso exploratório, descritivo e transversal. Principais resultados: As organizações analisadas operam sobretudo em mercados locais e regionais, de onde provém, maioritariamente, o seu volume de negócios, 80% do qual é composto por produtos pré-existentes. A maioria introduziu inovações de produto, processo, organizacionais ou de marketing, revelando potencial inovador. A maioria dos produtos novos ou significativamente melhorados foram desenvolvidos internamente, privilegiando fornecedores, consultores, instituições privadas de I&D e instituições do ensino superior como parceiros de cooperação, localizados sobretudo em Portugal e outros países europeus. As razões que motivam estas organizações a inovar são a melhoria da qualidade dos produtos e da capacidade de resposta a clientes e fornecedores, a diversificação da gama de produtos e o reforço da capacidade de desenvolvimento de novos produtos. Conclusões: O setor revela dinamismo na introdução de produtos novos para o mercado e para a empresa, apostando sobretudo num processo de inovação fechada. A cooperação externa é muito orientada à I&D e há um reduzido envolvimento dos agentes de mercado nas atividades de I&D através de parcerias. Contudo, estes são considerados importantes como fonte de informação e as organizações procuram responder às suas necessidades. Diferentes tipos de organizações adotam diferentes estratégias de inovação, conforme o seu mercado e a sua situação atual, o que traduz a materialização de políticas de inovação contextual, em linha com os desenvolvimentos teóricos da atualidade.

Everyday accounting and management teachers face the challenge of creating learning environments that motivate students. This chapter describes the Business Simulation (BS) experience that has taken place at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, Institute of Accounting and Administration (IPP/ISCAP). The chapter presents students’ perceptions about the course and the teaching/learning approach. The results show that pedagogical methods used (competency-oriented), generic competencies (cooperation and group work), and interpersonal skills (organisational and communication skills) are relevant for future accounting professionals. In addition, positive remarks and possible constraints based on observation, staff meetings, and past research are reported. The chapter concludes with some recommendations from the project implementation.

TiO2 films have been deposited on ITO substrates by dc reactive magnetron sputtering technique. It has been found that the sputtering pressure is a very important parameter for the structure of the deposited TiO2 films. When the pressure is lower than 1 Pa, the deposited has a dense structure and shows a preferred orientation along the [101] direction. However, the nanorod structure has been obtained as the sputtering pressure is higher than 1 Pa. These nanorods structure TiO2 film shows a preferred orientation along the [110] direction. The x-ray diffraction and the Raman scattering measurements show both the dense and the nanostructure TiO2 films have only an anatase phase, no other phase has been obtained. The results of the SEM show that these TiO2 nanorods are perpendicular to the ITO substrate. The TEM measurement shows that the nanorods have a very rough surface. The dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been assembled using these TiO2 nanorod films prepared at different sputtering pressures as photoelectrode. And the effect of the sputtering pressure on the properties of the photoelectric conversion of the DSSCs has been studied.
