The State Long-Term Care Ombudsman program operates as a unit within the Office of Elder Rights at Iowa Department of Elder Affairs. Duties of all long-term care ombudsmen are mandated by the Older Americans Act. This office serves people living in nursing facilities, residential care facilities, elder group homes and assisted living programs. Iowa’s State Long-Term Care Ombudsman’s Office has gone through many changes this past year ranging from staff changes to increase in jurisdiction area. Jeanne Yordi is now the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, joining this promotion, will be three additional Long-Term Care Ombudsmen to the unit. With additional staff this office hopes to create more public awareness; however, cases and complaints are top priority as this office may begin to fulfill the mandates of the Older Americans Act.

With an increasing number of complaints for federal fiscal year 2006 this office continues to struggle with fulfilling all of the mandates of the Older Americans Act. Complaint investigations and working with residents and families remain the priority.

Facility closures take a tremendous amount of time, and with 1 Long-Term Care Ombudsman per 10,500 beds this office struggles to meet all of the mandates of the Older Americans Act.

That individuals contribute in social dilemma interactions even when contributing is costly is a well-established observation in the experimental literature. Since a contributor is always strictly worse off than a non-contributor the question is raised if an intrinsic motivation to contribute can survive in an evolutionary setting. Using recent results on deterministic approximation of stochastic evolutionary dynamics we give conditions for equilibria with a positive number of contributors to be selected in the long run.

O presente trabalho de pesquisa centrado na problemática do património e memória, tem como objectivo inventariar e analisar alguns elementos do património material e imaterial da ilha de Santiago Cabo Verde, procurando contribuir deste modo para um conhecimento mais rigoroso da memória e identidade cabo-verdiana. Para tanto, analisamos documentos da Direcção de Obras Públicas, do final do século XIX referente ao arquipélago de Cabo Verde, no Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino, mais especificamente Cidade da Praia, revistas e publicações do século XX que reportam a situação da Igreja Matriz e do Palácio do Governo, bem como a questão da Cidade Velha e a evolução contextual das vozes a respeito das ruínas do património caboverdiano ao longo da história de forma atemporal. A história do arquipélago é marcada por intensas calamidades naturais e ecológicas que mobilizam constantemente autoridades, deixa a outros planos nomeadamente a valorização e preservação do património construído. Acerca do património imaterial, Batuque e a Tabanca, buscamos documentários a respeito deste elemento cultural que ainda hoje marca estrutura cultural e social da ilha de Santiago. Queremos pois entender e compreender o processo de construção de um património a partir do seu planeamento, sua génese de criação, em um território africano privilegiando o final do século XIX. Como é construído o património e a relação que o caboverdiano tem com a cultura que lhe foi transmitida? Por outras palavras, como se processou a convivência com um património imaterial, tradicional e de origem africana, contrapondo com a cultura do colonizador e fazendo emergir uma cultura mestiça que caracteriza hoje a sociedade caboverdiana que sobrevive além fronteira?

This essay deals with the reasons explaining children s work in 19th century textile factories and their removal during the first part of the 20th century. The inadequacy of the structure of incomes and expenditures of the household and the very low economic incentives to educate children can explain why children were in the factories and not in the school. Moreover, the marginal economic contribution to the economy of the household of a child was the same as that of his mother. This normally implied that women and children were perfect substitutes. When the family had a child at working age this allowed to replace the paid work input of the mother. With the beginnings of the 20th century a set of changes leading to the increase of women s productivity and hourly real wages, switched the situation and involved the new incorporation of women into paid work and the investment in children s human capital.

The Rebuild Iowa Agriculture and Environment Task Force respectfully submits its report to the Rebuild Iowa Advisory Commission (RIAC) for consideration of the impacts of the tornadoes, storms, high winds, and flooding affecting Iowa’s agriculture sector and environment. The Task Force was required to address very complex and multi-faceted issues. Understanding that there were a broad range of immediate concerns, as well as critical issues that need to be addressed in the future, the Task Force structured its work in two sessions. To better address the issues and priorities of the Task Force, this report categorizes the issues as agriculture, conservation, environment, and livestock.

Women play a substantial and crucial role in the Iowa economy. Women make up almost half the labor force, participating in the labor force at one of the highest rates in the nation. At the same time, disparities persist as to women’s prospects for success in that same economy. For instance, although women in Iowa are more likely than men to receive post-secondary education, they are also more likely to be in poverty and to earn a lower wage than male peers. The “gender gap,” the difference between male and female wages, is a much-discussed but often misunderstood tool that helps measure women’s success in the workforce. Women’s median wages are lower than men’s median wages largely because of differences in male and female occupations and work history, although gender discrimination in the workforce also plays a role. This report investigates Iowa’s gender gap in ways that clearly show both its causes and effects and suggests policy responses that could ensure women’s full and equal participation in Iowa’s economic future. Understanding the differences between men’s and women’s experiences in the state economy is important for developing policies that can effectively address barriers to economic success for all Iowans.
