A simple model of electron transfer is adapted to explain fluorescence quenching in self-assembled films of poly( p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) alternating with poly(thiophene acetic acid) (PTAA). Quenching is caused by a photo-induced electron transfer between the excited PPV (donor, D) and the PTAA (acceptor, A). The electron-transfer process can be mediated by insertion of electronically inert spacing bilayers between the D and A layers, As the number of bilayers is increased, the fluorescence is gradually recovered which is explained theoretically by assuming that the electron-transfer rate can be described as k = Z exp(- beta r) where r is the distance between D and A. Ferroelectric CaBi4Ti4O15 (CBTi144) thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by the polymeric precursor method. The films present a single phase of layered-structured perovskite with polar axis orientation after annealing at 700 degrees C for 2 h in static air and oxygen atmosphere. The a/b-axis orientation of the ferroelectric film is considered to be associated with the preferred orientation of the Pt bottom electrode. It is noted that the films annealed in static air showed good polarization fatigue characteristics at least up to 10(10) bipolar pulse cycles and excellent retention properties up to 10(4) s. on the other hand, oxygen atmosphere seems to be crucial in the decrease of both, fatigue and retention characteristics of the capacitors. Independently of the applied electric field, the retained switchable polarization approached a nearly steady-state value after a retention time of 10 s. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Langmuir and langmuir-blodgett films of polyfluorenes and their use in polymer light-emitting diodes
Resumo:
The Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film properties of two polyfluorene derivatives, namely poly(2,7-9,9'-dihexylfluorene-dyil) (PDHF) and poly(9,9 dihexylfluorene-dyil-vynilene-alt-1,4-phenylene-vyninele) (PDHF-PV), are reported. Surface pressure (Pi-A) and surface potential (Delta V-A) isotherms indicated that PDHF-PV forms true monolayers at the air/water interface, but PDHF does not. LB films could be transferred onto various types of substrate for both PDHF and PDHF-PV. Only the LB films from PDHF-PV could withstand deposition of a layer of evaporated metal to form a light-emitting diode (PLED), which had typical rectifying characteristics and emitted blue light. It is inferred that the ability of the polymer to form true monomolecular layers at the air/water interface seems to be associated with the viability of the LB films in PLEDs.

Electrically detected magnetic resonance (EDMR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were used to investigate emeraldine base polyaniline films. The magnetic susceptibility presented a Curie (localized spins)-Pauli (delocalized spins) transition at 240 K, when we also observed a transition in the dependence of the g factor with temperature (T). Peak-to-peak linewidth decreases with increasing temperature, reflecting that motional narrowing limits the hyperfine and dipolar broadening in this polymer. EDMR spectra could only be observed above 250 K in accordance to EPR results. Surface and bulk transport could be separated and their analysis reflected the effect of magnetic interaction with oxygen. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

This paper describes the preparation of thin titanium films via sol-gel route and their subsequent chemical modification by anchoring with 2-aminothiazole ligand and Pd(II) ion sorption, aiming to maximize the photocatalytic activity. The material was characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, ultraviolet and visible spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electronic microscopy. The amount of palladium adsorbed on the film's surface, determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, showed a value of 2.69 x 10(16) atoms CM-2. The photocatalytic tests indicated that the functionalization with 2-aminothiazole and the adsorption of palladium (II) were determinants in the semiconductor's enhanced photocatalytic activity. Polyaniline (PAni) thin films were deposited onto BK7 glass substrates using the in situ deposition technique. The control of the time and the aniline concentration in the PAni polymerization reaction on the film deposition allowed us to prepare films with different thickness, down to similar to 25 nm. The film growth process was monitored by measuring the UV-vis spectra and the AFM height profiles of the film surface. The curves of adsorption kinetics were analyzed with the Avrami's model, yielding an exponent it n = 3, thus indicating nucleation of spheroids at the initial stages of polymerization that grow through a diffusion process. AFM images of the surface height profiles corroborate this hypothesis, with spheroids growing with no preferred orientation during the in situ deposition. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Intense photoluminescence in highly disordered strontium titanate amorphous thin films prepared by the polymeric precursor method was observed at room temperature (300 K). The luminescence spectra of SrTiO3 amorphous thin films at room temperature revealed an intense single-emission band in the visible region. X-ray absorption near edge structure was used to probe the local atomic structure of SrTiO3 amorphous and crystalline thin films. Photoluminescence intensity in the 535 nm range was found to be correlated with the presence of non-bridging oxygen defects. A discussion is presented of the nature of this photoluminescence, which may be related to the disordered structure in SrTiO3 amorphous thin films. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Undoped and indium-doped Zinc oxide (ZnO) solid films were deposited by the pyrosol process at 450 degrees C on glass substrates From solutions where In/Zn ratio was 2, 5, and 10 at.%. Electrical measurements performed at room temperature show that the addition of indium changes the resistance of the films. The resistivities of doped films are less than non-doped ZnO films by one to two orders of magnitude depending on the dopant concentration in the solution. Preferential orientation of the films with the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate was detected by X-ray diffraction and polarized extended X-ray absorption fine structures measurements at the Zn K edge. This orientation depends on the indium concentration in the starting solution. The most textured films were obtained for solutions where In/Zn ratio was 2 and 5 at.%. When In/Zn = 10 at.%, the films had a nearly random orientation of crystallites. Evidence of the incorporation of indium in the ZnO lattice was obtained from extended X-ray absorption fine structures at the In and Zn K edges. The structural analysis of the least resistive film (Zn/In = 5 at.%) shows that In substitutes Zn in the wurtzite structure. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The temperature dependence of photoinduced birefringence was investigated for mixed Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from the homopolymer poly[4'-[[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]ethyl-amino]-2-chloro-4-nitroazobenzene] (HPDR13) and cadmium stearate (Cdst) and from the copolymer 4-[N-ethyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)]amino-2'-chloro-4'-nitroazobenzene (MMA-DR13) and CdSt. Birefringence was achieved by impinging a linearly polarized light on the LB films. The maximum birefringence achieved decreased with temperature as thermal relaxation of the chromophores was facilitated. The buildup curves for birefringence were fitted with biexponential functions representing distinctly different mechanisms with time constants. The first, fast process is thermally activated and may be represented by an Arrhenius process. The decay of birefringence after switching off the laser source was described by a Kohlraush-Williams-Watts (KWW) function, consistent with a distribution of relaxation times for the polymer system. Activation energies were obtained from Arrhenius plots of the rate constant of the exponential functions and KWW function, which showed that the buildup of birefringence was very similar for the two polymer systems. The decay, however, was slower for the LB film from MMA-DR13/CdSt. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd.

Oriented LiNbO3 thin films were prepared using a polymeric precursor solution deposited on (0001) sapphire substrate by spin coating and crystallized in a microwave oven. Crystallization of the films was carried out in a domestic microwave oven. The influence of this type of heat treatment on the film orientation was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and electron channeling patterns, which revealed epitaxial growth of films crystallized at 550 and 650 degreesC for 10 min. A microstructural study indicated that the films treated at temperatures below 600 degreesC were homogeneous and dense, and the optical properties confirmed the good quality of these films. Making heterolayered perovskite materials constitutes an approach for the creation of better dielectric and ferroelectric properties. In the experiment reported here, heterolayered PZT40/PZT60 films were grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (100) by a chemical solution deposition. The dielectric constant of the heterolayered thin film was significantly enhanced compared with that of pure PZT40 and PZT60 thin films. A dielectric constant of 701 at 100 kHz was observed for a stacking periodicity of six layers having a total thickness of 150 nm. The heterolayered film exhibited greater remanent polarization than PZT60 and PZT40 films. The values of remanent polarization were 7.9, 18.5, and 31 muC/cm(2), respectively, for pure PZT60, PZT40, and heterolayered thin films, suggesting that the superior dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the heterolayered thin film resulted from a cooperative interaction between the ferroelectric phases made from alternating tetragonal and rhombohedral phases of PZT, simulating the morphotropic phase boundary of this system. We have carried out dielectric and Raman spectroscopy studies at the 298-623 K temperature range in polycrystalline Pb0.70Sr0.30TiO3 thin films grown by a soft chemical method. The diffuse phase-transition behavior of the thin films was observed by means of the dielectric constant versus temperature curves, which show a broad peak. Such behavior was confirmed later by Raman spectroscopy measurements up to 823 K, indicating that a diffuselike phase transition takes place at around 548-573 K. The damping factor of the E(1TO) soft mode was calculated using the damped simple harmonic oscillator model. on the other hand, Raman modes persist above the tetragonal to cubic phase transition temperature although all optical modes should be Raman inactive. The origin of these modes was interpreted in terms of a breakdown of the microscopic local cubic symmetry by chemical disorder. The lack of a well-defined transition temperature and the presence of broad bands at some temperature interval above the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase-transition temperature suggested a diffuse nature of the phase transition. This result corroborates the dielectric constant versus temperature data, which showed a broad ferroelectric phase transition in this thin film. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

We have performed dielectric and micro-Raman spectroscopy measurements in the 298 - 673 K temperature range in polycrystalline Pb0.50Sr0.50TiO3 thin films prepared by a soft chemical method. The phase transition have been investigated by dielectric measurements at various frequencies during the heating cycle. It was found that the temperature corresponding to the peak value of the dielectric constant is frequency-independent, indicating a non-relaxor ferroelectric behavior. However, the dielectric constant versus temperature curves associated with the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition showed a broad maximum peak at around 433 K. The observed behavior is explained in terms of a diffuse phase transition. The obtained Raman spectra indicate the presence of a local symmetry disorder, due to a higher strontium concentration in the host lattice. The monitoring of some modes, conducted in the Pb0.50Sr0.50TiO3 thin films, showed that the ferroelectric tetragonal phase undergoes a transition to the paraelectric cubic phase at around 423 K. However, the Raman activity did not disappear, as would be expected from a transition to the cubic paraelectric phase. The strong Raman spectrum observed for this cubic phase is indicative that a diffuse-type phase transition is taking place. This behavior is attributed to distortions of the perovskite structure, allowing the persistence of low-symmetry phase features in cubic phase high above the transition temperature. This result is in contrast to the forbidden first-order Raman spectrum, which would be expected from a cubic paraelectric phase, such as the one observed at high temperature in pure PbTiO3 perovskite.

Tin dioxide (SnO2) thin film photoconductivity spectra were measured for a large temperature range using a deuterium source, the intensity of photocurrent spectra in the range 200-400 nm is temperature dependent, and the photocurrent increases in the ultraviolet even for illumination with photon energies much higher than the bandgap transition. This behavior is related to recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs with oxygen adsorbed at grain boundaries, which is consistent with nanoscopic crystallite size of sol-gel deposited films.
