A modified axisymmetric forward spiral extrusion (AFSE) has been proposed recently to enhance the strain accumulation during the process. The new technique is called variable lead axisymmetric forward spiral extrusion (VLAFSE) that features a variable lead along the extrusion direction. To assess the effect of design modification on plastic deformation, a comprehensive study has been performed here using a 3D transient finite element (FE) model. The FE results established the shear deformation as the dominant mode of deformation which has been confirmed experimentally. The variable lead die extends strain accumulation in the radial and longitudinal directions over the entire grooved section of the die and eliminates the rigid body rotation which occurs in the case of a constant lead die, AFSE. A comparison of forming loads for VLAFSE and AFSE proved the advantages of the former design in the reduction of the forming load which is more pronounced under higher frictional coefficients. This finding proves that the efficiency of VLAFSE is higher than that of AFSE. Besides, the significant amount of accumulated shear strain in VLAFSE along with non-axisymmetric distribution of friction creates a surface feature in the processed sample called zipper effect that has been investigated. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

Magnetic liquid marbles, an encapsulation of liquid droplet with hydrophobic magnetic particles, show remarkable responsiveness to external magnetic force and great potential to be used as a discrete droplet microfluidic system. In this study, we presented the manipulation of a magnetic liquid marble under an external magnetic field and calculated the maximum frictional force, the magnetic force required for actuating the liquid marbles and the effective surface tension of the magnetic liquid marble, as well as the threshold volume for the transition from quasi-spherical to puddle-like shape. By taking advantage of the unique feature of being opened and closed reversibly, we have proven the encapsulated droplets can be detected optically with a reflection-mode probe. Combining the open-close and optical detection also enables to probe chemical reactions taking place within liquid marbles. These remarkable features offer a simple yet powerful alternative to conventional discrete microfluidic systems and may have wide applications in biomedical and drug discovery. © 2012 The Author(s).

In orthopaedic surgery the reattachment of tendon to bone requires suture materials that have stable and durable properties to allow healing at the tendon-bone interface. Failure rates of this type of surgery can be as high as 25%. While the tissue suture interface is a weak link, proportions of these failures are caused by in-vivo abrasion of the suture with bone and suture anchor materials. Abrasion of the suture material results from the movement of the suture through the eyelet by the surgeon during surgery, or with limb movement after surgery as the suture is not rigidly restrained within the eyelet. During movement the suture is subjected to bending and frictional forces that can lead to fatigue induced failure. This paper investigates the mechanism of bending abrasion fatigue induced failure of number two grade braided sheath only and braided sheath/multifilament core sutures. Sutures were oscillated over a stainless steel wire at low frequency under load in a dry state to simulate the bending and frictional forces between suture and eyelet. Failure mechanism was determined by video microscopy of the suture during abrasion combined with optical microscopy analysis of partially and fully abraded sutures. Braided only structures had high friction loading on the small number of fibres at the abrasion interface. This caused rapid single fibre breakages that accumulate to cause suture failure. The addition of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene core fibres to a braided suture distributed the applied load across multiple fibres at the abrasion interface. This improved abrasion resistance by 15-20 times that of braided sheath alone.

Virtual reality systems are becoming a must for product and process design, training practices and ergonomic analysis in many manufacturing industries. The automotive sector is considered to be the leader in applying virtual reality (VR) solutions for real-world, non-trivial, problems. Although, a number of commercial 3D engineering tools for digital mockups exist, most of them lack intuitive direct manipulation of the digital mockups. The majority of these 3D engineering tools are constrained to the interaction mainly with rigid objects which is just half the story. To bridge this gap, we have developed a haptics interface for modelling and simulation of flexible objects. The graphical and haptic user interface developed allows the creation of multiple one dimensional (1D) flexible objects, such as hoses, cables and harnesses. The user is required to provide the mechanical properties of the material such as Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, material density, damping factors, as well as dimensional properties such as length, and inner and outer diameters of the flexible object. Flexilution solver is employed to estimate and simulate the dynamic behaviour of flexible objects in response to external user interaction, whereas Nvidia's generic physics engine is used to simulate the behaviour of rigid objects. A generic communication interface is developed to accommodate a variety of devices without the reconfiguration of the simulation platform.

This paper investigates small-signal stability of a distribution system with distributed generator and induction motor load, as a dynamic element. The analysis is carried out over a distribution test system with different types of induction motor loads. The system is linearised by the perturbation method. Eigenvalues and participation factors are calculated to see the modal interaction of the system. The study indicates that load voltage dynamics significantly influence the damping of a newly identified voltage mode. This mode has frequency of oscillation between the electromechanical and subsynchronous oscillation of power systems. To justify the validity of the modal analysis time domain simulation is also carried out. Finally, significant parameters of the system that affect the damping and frequency of the oscillation are identified.

This paper presents a novel excitation control design to improve the voltage profile of power distribution networks with distributed generation and induction motor loads. The system is linearised by perturbation technique. Controller is designed using the linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) controller synthesis method. The LQG controller is addressed with norm-bounded uncertainty. The approach considered in this paper is to find the smallest upper bound on the H∞ norm of the uncertain system and to design an optimal controller based on this bound. The design method requires the solution of a linear matrix inequality. The performance of the controller is tested on a benchmark power distribution system. Simulation results show that the proposed controller provides impressive oscillation damping compared to the conventional excitation controller.

This paper investigates the oscillatory behavior of power distribution systems in the presence of distributed generation. The analysis is carried out over a distribution test system with two doubly fed induction type wind generators and different types of induction motor loads. The system is linearized by the perturbation method. Eigenvalues are calculated to see the modal interaction within the system. The study indicates that interactions between closely placed converter controllers and induction motor loads significantly influence the damping of the oscillatory modes of the system. The critical modes have a frequency of oscillation between the electromechanical and subsynchronous oscillations of power systems. Time-domain simulations are carried out to verify the validity of the modal analysis and to provide a physical feel for the types of oscillations that occur in distribution systems. Finally, significant parameters of the system that affect the damping and frequency of the oscillation are identified.

This paper investigates the friction and deformation-induced heating that occurs during the stamping of high strength sheet steels, under room temperature conditions. A thermo-mechanical finite element model of a typical plane strain stamping process was developed to understand the temperature conditions experienced within the die and blank material; and this was validated against experimental measurements. A high level of correlation was achieved between the finite element model and experimental data for a range of operating conditions and parameters. The model showed that the heat generated during realistic production conditions can result in high temperatures of up to 108 °C and 181 °C in the blank and die materials, respectively, for what was traditionally expected to be 'cold' forming conditions. It was identified that frictional heating was primarily responsible for the peak temperatures at the die surface, whilst the peak blank temperatures were caused by a combination of frictional and deformation induced heating. The results provide new insights into the local conditions within the blank and die, and are of direct relevance to sheet formability and tool wear performance during industrial stamping processes. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Ionic polymer conductive network composite (IPCNC) actuators are a class of electroactive polymer composites that exhibit some interesting electromechanical characteristics such as low voltage actuation, large displacements, and benefit from low density and elastic modulus. Thus, these emerging materials have potential applications in biomimetic and biomedical devices. Whereas significant efforts have been directed toward the development of IPMC actuators, the establishment of a proper mathematical model that could effectively predict the actuators' dynamic behavior is still a key challenge. This paper presents development of an effective modeling strategy for dynamic analysis of IPCNC actuators undergoing large bending deformations. The proposed model is composed of two parts, namely electrical and mechanical dynamic models. The electrical model describes the actuator as a resistive-capacitive (RC) transmission line, whereas the mechanical model describes the actuator as a system of rigid links connected by spring-damping elements. The proposed modeling approach is validated by experimental data, and the results are discussed. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, surface electromyography (sEMG) from muscles of the lower limb is acquired and processed to estimate the singlejoint voluntary motion intention, based on which, two single-joint active training strategies are proposed with iLeg, a horizontal exoskeleton for lower limb rehabilitation newly developed at our laboratory. In damping active training, the joint angular velocity is proportionally controlled by the voluntary effort derived from sEMG, performing as an ideal damper, while spring active training aims to create a spring-like environment where the joint angular displacement from the constant reference is proportionally controlled by the voluntary effort. Experiments are conducted with iLeg and one healthy male subject to validate the feasibility of the two single-joint active training strategies.

This paper uses the finite element upper and lower bound limit analysis to assess the stability of slopes mostly found in embankment cases where frictional materials are filled on purely cohesive undrained clay. For comparison purposes, the commonly used stability assessment method, limit equilibrium method (LEM) is also employed. The final results for both methods are then presented in the form of comprehensive chart solutions for the convenience of practicing engineers during preliminary slope designs. The failure mechanism will also be discussed in this paper. Ultimately, it should be noted that finite element limit analysis method holds the upper hand as its prior assumptions are not required. Thus, the obtained failure mechanism from the slope stability analysis will be more realistic. Hence, it will provide a better understanding for the slope failure surface. Therefore, engineers should design more carefully when the LEM is applied to the slopes with frictional materials filled on purely cohesive undrained clay. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract We report that a prestressing technique similar to that traditionally used in prestressed concrete can improve the mechanical performance of flax fibre spun yarn reinforced polymer-matrix composites. Prestressing a low twist yarn not only introduces tension to the constituent fibres and compressive stress to the matrix similar as in prestressed concretes, but also causes changes to the yarn structure that lead to the rearrangement of fibres within the yarn. Prestressing increases the fibre packing density in yarn, causes fibre straightening, and reduces fibre obliquity in yarn (improved fibre alignment along yarn axis). Electroactive polymers have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their sensing and actuating properties which make them a material of choice for a wide range of applications including sensors, biomimetic robots, and biomedical micro devices. This paper presents an effective modeling strategy for nonlinear large deformation (small strains and moderate rotations) dynamic analysis of polymer actuators. Considering that the complicated electro-chemo-mechanical dynamics of these actuators is a drawback for their application in functional devices, establishing a mathematical model which can effectively predict the actuator's dynamic behavior can be of paramount importance. To effectively predict the actuator's dynamic behavior, a comprehensive mathematical model is proposed correlating the input voltage and the output bending displacement of polymer actuators. The proposed model, which is based on the rigid finite element (RFE) method, consists of two parts, namely electrical and mechanical models. The former is comprised of a ladder network of discrete resistive-capacitive components similar to the network used to model transmission lines, while the latter describes the actuator as a system of rigid links connected by spring-damping elements (sdes). Both electrical and mechanical components are validated through experimental results.

Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are extensively used to ensure the dynamic stability of power systems through the modulation of excitation signals supplied to synchronous generators. This paper presents a comparative study of two different PSSs: STAB1 and IEEEST. The stabilizers are designed for the linearized model of a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system with different loads. Both time-and frequency-domain simulations are carried out to investigate the performance of these stabilizers. For all PSSs, the time-domain simulations are performed by applying a three-phase short-circuit fault at the terminal of the synchronous generator. These simulation results are compared against the open-loop characteristics of the SMIB system where no PSS is implemented. Simulation results demonstrate that the speed-fed PSS provides more damping as compared to frequency- and power-fed stabilizers.
