Direct Observation of strong coupling in a laser-shock compressed plasma

In this Letter we report on a near collective x-ray scattering experiment on shock-compressed targets. A highly coupled Al plasma was generated and probed by spectrally resolving an x-ray source forward scattered by the sample. A significant reduction in the intensity of the elastic scatter was observed, which we attribute to the formation of an incipient long-range order. This speculation is confirmed by x-ray scattering calculations accounting for both electron degeneracy and strong coupling effects. Measurements from rear side visible diagnostics are consistent with the plasma parameters inferred from x-ray scattering data. These results give the experimental evidence of the strongly coupled ionic dynamics in dense plasmas.

Depressed mood and dietary fish intake: Direct relationship or indirect relationship as a result of diet and lifestyle?

Previous studies have suggested an association between depressed mood and the dietary intake of fish. In all cases, however, dietary fish intake has been considered at the exclusion of all other aspects of the diet. This analysis investigates associations between depressed mood and dietary fish intake, while also concurrently investigating intake of a number of other dietary components. The analysis is conducted on data from 10,602 men from Northern Ireland and France screened for inclusion into the PRIME cohort study. Depressed mood was assessed using a self-report questionnaire based on the Welsh Pure Depression sub-scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, diet was assessed using a Food Frequency Questionnaire, and limited demographics were also measured. Using regression, depressed mood is initially inversely associated with dietary fish intake. On inclusion of all other dietary variables, the strength of this relationship reduces but remains, and significant associations with a number of other foods are also found. On additional inclusion of all demographic variables, the strength of the above relationships again reduces, and associations with various measures of socio-economic status and education are also significant. These findings suggest that depressed mood is associated with fish intake both directly, and indirectly as part of a diet that is associated with depression and as part of a lifestyle that is associated with depression. Additional support for these conclusions is also provided in the pattern of associations between depressed mood and diet in the two countries. The relative contributions of fish intake to depressed mood both directly and indirectly are yet to be determined. However, while diet is not measured and until lifestyle can be adequately measured, the potential roles of diet and lifestyle in the association between depressed mood and dietary fish intake should not be ignored.

Direct Sensing in Liquids Using Whispering-Gallery-Mode Droplet Resonators

Liquid droplets suspended by the tip of a thin wire, a glass capillary, or a needle form high-Q optical resonators, thanks to surface tension. Under gravity equilibrium conditions, the maximum drop diameter is approximately 1.5 mm for paraffin oil (volume ∼ 0.5 μL) using, for instance, a silica fiber with 250 μm thickness. Whispering gallery modes are excited by a free-space near-infrared laser that is frequency locked to the cavity resonance. The droplet cavity serves as a miniature laboratory for sensing of chemical species and particles.

Computationally efficient sequential learning algorithms for direct link resource-allocating networks

Computionally efficient sequential learning algorithms are developed for direct-link resource-allocating networks (DRANs). These are achieved by decomposing existing recursive training algorithms on a layer by layer and neuron by neuron basis. This allows network weights to be updated in an efficient parallel manner and facilitates the implementation of minimal update extensions that yield a significant reduction in computation load per iteration compared to existing sequential learning methods employed in resource-allocation network (RAN) and minimal RAN (MRAN) approaches. The new algorithms, which also incorporate a pruning strategy to control network growth, are evaluated on three different system identification benchmark problems and shown to outperform existing methods both in terms of training error convergence and computational efficiency. Direct and indirect effects of obestatin peptides on food intake and the regulation of glucose homeostasis and insulin secretion in mice

Obestatin is a recently discovered peptide hormone that appears to be involved in reducing food intake, gut motility and body weight. Obestatin is a product of the preproghrelin gene and appears to oppose several physiological actions of ghrelin. This study investigated the acute effects of obestatin (1-23) and the truncated form, obestatin (11-23), on feeding activity, glucose homeostasis or insulin secretion. Mice received either intraperitoneal obestatin (1-23) or (11-23) (1 mu mol/kg) 4 h prior to an allowed 15 min period of feeding. Glucose excursions and insulin responses were lowered by 64-77% and 39-41%, respectively, compared with saline controls. However this was accompanied by 43% and 53% reductions in food intake, respectively. The effects of obestatin peptides were examined under either basal or glucose (18 mmol/kg) challenge conditions to establish whether effects were independent of changes in feeding. No alterations in plasma glucose or insulin responses were observed. In addition, obestatin peptides had no effect on insulin sensitivity as revealed by hypoglycaemic response when co-administered with insulin. Our observations support a role for obestatin in regulating metabolism through changes of appetite, but indicate no direct actions on glucose homeostasis or insulin secretion. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. An investigation of alternative catalytic approaches for the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide from hydrogen and oxygen

Catalytic systems for the direct production of hydrogen peroxide from hydrogen and oxygen are investigated, and the factors which make a successful process identified. The use of low metal loadings, an organic co-solvent (such as ethanol) and reduced palladium as the catalytic metal all lead to good activity and selectivity. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
