Better integration of crop-legume sequencing under limited water

It is proposed that over 4-5 years of study period, multiple collaborative sites will be established with on-farm cooperators to demonstrate better integration of crop-legume sequencing for improved root growth and functioning under limited water, leading to improved productivity and carbon sequestration, and reduced runoff and deep drainage losses.

Innovative management of herbicide resistant weeds - seed banks and soil biology

The project will evaluate seed bank depletion of key northern herbicide resistant weeds under different environments, cropping systems, crop agronomies and non-chemical control tactics. The project will also evaluate soil biology and seed bank relationships to explain differences in seed bank persistence.

Nitrogen requirements of Burdekin soils to inform Reef Policy legislation

Participatory adaptation and mitigation strategies for climate change on mixed farms

The project uses participatory methods to engage primary producers and advisers in central Queensland, southern Queensland, and north east New South Wales on-farm trials and demonstrations to adapt mixed farming systems to changed climate conditions. The focus is adaptation to climate change but will support abatement of greenhouse gas emissions by building soil carbon, better managing soil nitrogen and soil organic carbon. Data will be collected and integrated with data from Round 1 of the Climate Change Research Program to extend industry understanding beyond a general awareness of ‘climate change’. Nitrous oxide and soil carbon data will help farmers/advisers understand the implications of climate change and develop adaptation strategies for a more sustainable, climate sensitive future.

Cropping solutions for the sugarcane farming systems of the Burdekin

The successful inclusion of break crops into the Burdekin sugar farming system will allow growers to diversify and capitalise on alternate crop income sources, particularly during cyclical downturns in sugar price. Secondly if cane productivity is improved through the inclusion of break crops, millers and growers stand to gain additional economic benefit compared to the current sugarcane monoculture.

Descriptions and keys to fungus-feeding Australian species in 5 genera of thrips

Fifty species in five genera of fungus feeding thrips, collected in part by Bush Blitz, are described. Details of 35 new species are combined with species previously named but not recognisable from literature, and illustrated identification keys to all species published. All specimens are data-based. These thrips are important ecologically, being associated with nutrient recycling from dead plants, and as food for various birds, lizards and frogs.

Development of pedigree mapping for wheat

The aim of this project is to build on the work done so far in applying pedigree mapping principals to northern adapted wheat pedigreed to identify robust QTL for quality traits.
