The temperature dependence of 1H spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, and that of the second moment, M2, are analysed in the temperature range 390 K to 77 K. A plot of T1 vs inverse temperature shows three phase transitions at 250 K, 167 K and 111 K. At 167 K, T1 displays a large jump while it shows changes in slope at 250 K and 111 K. In the high temperature phase (> 167 K), the correlated motion of CH3 and NH3 groups is found to cause the relaxation while their uncorrelated motion takes over in the low temperature phases (< 167 K). The unusual T1 behaviour in phase II (250 K-167 K) is ascribed to the small angle torsion of the cation. A constant M2 value of ∼ 9.7 G2, throughout the range of temperature studied, indicates the presence of reorientation of CH3 and NH3 groups.

Processing and instability maps using a dynamic materials model have been developed for stainless steel type AISI 316L in the temperature range 600-1250-degrees-C and strain rate range 0.001-100 s-1 with a view to optimising its hot workability. Stainless steel type AISI 316L undergoes dynamic recrystallisation, with a peak efficiency of 35% at 1250-degrees-C and 0.05 s-1, which are the optimum parameters for hot working this material. The material undergoes dynamic recovery at 900-degrees-C and 0.001 s-1. The increase in the dynamic recrystallisation and dynamic recovery temperatures in comparison with stainless steel type AISI 304L is attributed to the presence of a backstress caused by the molybdenum additions. These results are in general agreement with those reported elsewhere on stainless steel type 316 deformed in hot extrusion and hot torsion. At temperatures < 850-degrees-C and strain rates > 10 s-1, the material exhibits flow localisation owing to adiabatic shear band formation, whereas at higher temperatures (> 850-degrees-C) and strain rates (> 10 s-1) mechanical twinning and wavy slip bands are observed. We propose and develop here a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau-like theory of cuprate high-temperature superconductivity. The free energy of a cuprate superconductor is expressed as a functional F of the complex spin-singlet pair amplitude psi(ij) equivalent to psi(m) = Delta(m) exp(i phi(m)), where i and j are nearest-neighbor sites of the square planar Cu lattice in which the superconductivity is believed to primarily reside, and m labels the site located at the center of the bond between i and j. The system is modeled as a weakly coupled stack of such planes. We hypothesize a simple form FDelta, phi] = Sigma(m)A Delta(2)(m) + (B/2)Delta(4)(m)] + C Sigma(< mn >) Delta(m) Delta(n) cos(phi(m) - phi(n)) for the functional, where m and n are nearest-neighbor sites on the bond-center lattice. This form is analogous to the original continuum Ginzburg-Landau free-energy functional; the coefficients A, B, and C are determined from comparison with experiments. A combination of analytic approximations, numerical minimization, and Monte Carlo simulations is used to work out a number of consequences of the proposed functional for specific choices of A, B, and C as functions of hole density x and temperature T. There can be a rapid crossover of from small to large values as A changes sign from positive to negative on lowering T; this crossover temperature T-ms(x) is identified with the observed pseudogap temperature T*(x). The thermodynamic superconducting phase-coherence transition occurs at a lower temperature T-c(x), and describes superconductivity with d-wave symmetry for positive C. The calculated T-c(x) curve has the observed parabolic shape. The results for the superfluid density rho(s)(x, T), the local gap magnitude , the specific heat C-v(x, T) (with and without a magnetic field), as well as vortex properties, all obtained using the proposed functional, are compared successfully with experiments. We also obtain the electron spectral density as influenced by the coupling between the electrons and the correlation function of the pair amplitude calculated from the functional, and compare the results successfully with the electronic spectrum measured through angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). For the specific heat, vortex structure, and electron spectral density, only some of the final results are reported here; the details are presented in subsequent papers.

The collapse of a spherical (cylindrical) cavity in air is studied analytically. The global solution for the entire domain between the sound front, separating the undisturbed and the disturbed gas, and the vacuum front is constructed in the form of infinite series in time with coefficients depending on an ldquoappropriaterdquo similarity variable. At timet=0+, the exact planar solution for a uniformly moving cavity is assumed to hold. The global analytic solution of this initial boundary value problem is found until the collapse time (=(gamma–1)/2) for gamma le 1+(2/(1+v)), wherev=1 for cylindrical geometry, andv=2 for spherical geometry. For higher values of gamma, the solution series diverge at timet — 2(beta–1)/ (v(1+beta)+(1–beta)2) where beta=2/(gamma–1). A close agreement is found in the prediction of qualitative features of analytic solution and numerical results of Thomaset al. [1].

We present analytic results to show that the Schwinger-boson hole-fermion mean-field state exhibits non-Fermi liquid behavior due to spin-charge separation. The physical electron Green's function consists of three additive components. (a) A Fermi-liquid component associated with the bose condensate. (b) A non-Fermi liquid component which has a logarithmic peak and a long tail that gives rise to a linear density of states that is symmetric about the Fermi level and a momentum distribution function with a logarithmic discontinuity at the Fermi surface. (c) A second non-Fermi liquid component associated with the thermal bosons which leads to a constant density of states. It is shown that zero-point fluctuations associated with the spin-degrees of freedom are responsible for the logarithmic instabilities and the restoration of particle-hole symmetry close to the Fermi surface.

We have developed an alternate description of dynamics of nucleation in terms of an extended set of order parameters. The order parameters consist of an ordered set of kth largest clusters, ordered such that k = 1 is the largest cluster in the system, k = 2 is the second largest cluster, and so on. We have derived an analytic expression for the free energy for the kth largest cluster, which is in excellent agreement with the simulated results. At large supersaturation, the free energy barrier for the growth of the kth largest cluster disappears and the nucleation becomes barrierless. The major success of this extended theoretical formalism is that it can clearly explain the observed change in mechanism at large metastability P. Bhimalapuram et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 206104 (2007)] and the associated dynamical crossover. The classical nucleation theory cannot explain this crossover. The crossover from activated to barrierless nucleation is found to occur at a supersaturation where multiple clusters cross the critical size. We attribute the crossover as the onset of the kinetic spinodal. We have derived an expression for the rate of nucleation in the barrierless regime by modeling growth as diffusion on the free energy surface of the largest cluster. The model reproduces the slower increase in the rate of growth as a function of supersaturation, as observed in experiments.

We present an analysis, based on the metaplectic group Mp(2), of the recently introduced single-mode inverse creation and annihilation operators and of the associated eigenstates of different two-photon annihilation operators. We motivate and obtain a quantum operator form of the classical Mobius or fractional linear transformation. The subtle relation to the two unitary irreducible representations of Mp(2) is brought out. For problems involving inverse operators the usefulness of the Bargmann analytic function representation of quantum mechanics is demonstrated. Squeezing, bunching, and photon-number distributions of the four families of states that arise in this context are studied both analytically and numerically

The title compound, 9,10-dihydro-8,8-dimethyl-2-oxo-2H,8H-benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b']dipyran-9,10-diyl 2-methyl-2-butenoate, C24H26O7, contains a highly planar coumarin nucleus and a substituted dihydropyran ring (C), which has a distorted half-chair conformation, with an 8 alpha,9 beta orientation. The conformation of ring C is further supported by the two angelyloxy (2-methyl-2-butenoyloxy) substituents at positions C9 and C10, which are cis oriented and thus cannot both occupy equatorial positions with respect to the plane of ring C. The conformations of the two angelyloxy substituents are different, as indicated by their endocyclic torsion angles. The most striking of these angles are O1'-C2'-C4'=C6' and O1'-C2'-C4'-C5' [-137.7 (5) and 43.7 (5)degrees, respectively, in the chain at C10 and 155.8 (5) and -24.7 (9)degrees, respectively in the chain at C9]. These variations are due to two intramolecular hydrogen bonds, namely, C16-H161 ... O1' [C16 ... O1' 3.056 (7) Angstrom] and C7''-H7Y ... O3'' [C7'' ... O3'' 2.955 (12) Angstrom]. The methyl substituents, C15 and C16, at position C8 are alpha and beta oriented, respectively. The crystal structure is stabilized by a weak C4-H41 ... O3' hydrogen bond [C4 ... O3' 3.297 (6) Angstrom] between the screw-related molecules.
